ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: UNDERSTANDING PROPHECY II<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Mornin<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u2019, Everyone!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Continuing from last week\u2019s sharing, I\u2019d like to share with you\na perspective of prophecy that comes from a lifetime of walking with the\nLord.  I\u2019d like to share with you many of the different facets of prophecy\nand the differences between giving prophetic utterances and being a\nprophet.  What I share may sound really different for some of you \u2013\nperhaps even \u201coff the wall\u201d to others \u2013 but for those who\u2019ve experienced the\nflow of the Holy Spirit in this realm, something that will refresh your\nspirits.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For those of you who\u2019ve known me over the years, some of what I\nshare will be familiar, and I\u2019ve shared bits and pieces of this in different\narticles and teaching sessions, but my hope is to put things together in a\ncomprehensive and cohesive picture that will help everyone understand the\nnature, the character, the purpose, and the end of prophecy.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s just today\u2019s preface.  I\u2019m liable to be a bit windy\nwith this topic.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When I was Chief Engineer at KTLM-TV and we would have our\ndepartmental managers\u2019 meetings, sometimes Bill Jorn<\/span>\nor Sam Vale would ask me for an explanation of something that was happening\nwith our transmitter.  I would launch into what I thought was a good,\nlogical explanation of a series of technical problems or their\nresolution.  Sometimes Bill or Sam would wave<\/span>\ntheir hands and say, \u201cStop.  The short version, please.  Can you fix\nit?\u201d  Or perhaps, \u201cIs it fixed?\u201d  Sometimes, Bill would say, \u201cNow,\nfor the benefit of all of us, would you explain that in English, please? \nThe abridged version?\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My wordiness over the years has been both a blessing and an\nirritation.  I guess when you work in a technical realm, and do the normal\nengineering routine, you keep notes, you analyze, you test and retest, you\nanalyze some more, you make more notes to yourself, and you continue this\nprocess until you\u2019re satisfied you\u2019ve resolved a problem or series of\nproblems. <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Engineers are like that.  They love to explore every facet\nof an issue so they clearly understand the processes involved.  It makes\nfuture problem solving and future upgrades a whole lot easier.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When you\u2019re a preacher AND an engineer, you get a double whammy\nof this proclivity.  That\u2019s pretty self-evident.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For about ten years or so, I\npublished some lengthy articles \u2013 often prophetic articles \u2013 that I distributed\nand called<\/span> <\/span>AN OPEN LETTER TO THE EKKLESIA<\/span><\/i>.  Each\nof the articles dealt with issues that the Holy Spirit was addressing in the\npeople of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One of the articles was sub-titled,\nThe Midnight Hour.  In this letter, I shared how much of an \u201cexpert\u201d I\nused to be in \u201cEnd Time\u201d prophecy.  While ministering at Full Gospel\nAssembly in Salt Lake City back in the late 1960\u2019s, I was teaching on the \u201cend\ntimes\u201d on Wednesday nights.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Waxing eloquent on the topic, I had\nmy charts together, my timelines and my wonderful explanations of \u201cthe Mark of\nthe Beast\u201d, the \u201cAntichrist,\u201d and \u201cthe Great Tribulation.\u201d  I really had\nit all figured out!  It was fun to teach, and our Wednesday night\ngatherings were almost better-attended than our Sunday services.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One Wednesday night after a\nwonderful time of \u201cteaching,\u201d I got home and Holy Spirit really pulled the plug\non me.  He said,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cAre you teaching these things because you learned them from me, or because\nyou either read them in books or heard someone else teach them based on their\ninterpretation?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The question stunned me!  When\nI sat down to analyze it, I realized that NONE of what I was teaching had been\nrevealed by Holy Spirit: that every last shred of it was based on what I had\nread in books or heard from someone else.  That was tough to\nswallow!   I could hear Holy Spirit saying,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cI thought we had an agreement that you would ONLY share what I give you\nand reveal to you!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I realized that I had grown up\nlistening to Holy Spirit, listening to His voice and being obedient to it \u2013\nexcept when it came to prophecy.  I thereupon took every book in my\nlibrary on prophecy, and in particular, \u201cend times,\u201d my charts and timelines \u2013\neverything \u2013 and threw them into the trash bin.  The following Wednesday\nnight, I changed the topic of teaching entirely.  I was too chicken to\ntell people at the time what had happened, and weakly explained that I needed\nto do some more research.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Research?  Hahh<\/span>! \nNot hardly!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let me pause momentarily to say\nthat I\u2019m not attacking those writers who\u2019ve done all their books on End Times,\nthe Antichrist, the Great Tribulation, the Rapture, and all of that. \nThey\u2019ve been caught up (pun intended) just like I was in the excitement and the\nfun of trying to figure things out rationally, logically, Scripturally. \nThe problem is, there is no Spirit of Prophecy present to provide confirming\ntestimony in your spirit to all of this logic.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The fact was that when it came to\nexplaining ANYTHING concerning the book of Daniel or any of the prophetic\nbooks, or the prophecies in Revelation, I was about as ignorant as an old\nshoe.  I made a promise to myself and to the Lord that from that day\nforward, I would never teach or share anything that He did not reveal to me\npersonally, and\/or plant a \u201crhema<\/i><\/span>\u201d in my\nspirit.  (The word,<\/span> <\/span>rhema<\/span><\/i><\/span>, is the Greek word used in the New Testament to denote a word which is\nactually spoken aloud.)  For more than 25 years, I refused to even engage\nin discussions on end time events.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Beginning in late 1990, and\nstretching over a period of nearly seven years, Della and I began to\nparticipate in some of the most incredible worship experiences.  They\nexceeded the wildest fancies of anyone we had ever known, and certainly had\nnever heard of anyone having these experiences before.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For those of you familiar with\nspeaking in tongues, you will be able to grasp the phenomenon.  You know\nthat when you speak in tongues, it doesn\u2019t come out of any place of learning or\neducation in your past.  There are no mental gymnastics you can contrive\nto figure out how to speak the words that come out of your mouth.  You\nKNOW that the Holy Spirit is simply using your vocal cords to utter the most\nmarvelous praise and adoration of the Lord Jesus Christ, or that He is praying\nthrough you with intercession that exceeds natural comprehension.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As a musician with well over 55\nyears of playing numerous musical instruments, I know that skill comes with an\nenormous amount of practice.  You don\u2019t normally just sit down and begin\nto play music \u2013 especially with other like-trained and practiced musicians \u2013\nyou\u2019ve never heard or practiced, or even have sheet music for.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless, as we gathered\ntogether with other musicians and singers for worship, the Holy Spirit began to\ngive us music \u2013 the same thing to all of us at the same time!  It is akin\nto having a dozen or more people speaking in tongues together \u2013 all speaking\nexactly the same words at the same time.  In the natural, this is\nimpossible!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For nearly seven years, in worship\ngatherings from Anchorage to Detroit, from Seattle to Edmonton, we experienced\nthis every time we got together.  The Holy Spirit would begin to flow\nthrough us with the most incredible worship, and we all played the same thing\nat the same time as though we had practiced it for many hours.  One can\nsort of explain\u2026.well, a part of it, maybe\u2026.if all of the musicians were\nlike-trained, and from similar music backgrounds.  We weren\u2019t!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Earle Treend<\/span>,\nthe trombonist, came from a Big Band and jazz musical background.  His\nwife, Marcia, was principal cellist with the Detroit and Spokane Symphony\norchestras. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bob Bartow was a\nclassically-trained organist.  Although I had eight years of piano\ntraining and could read music to play the trombone, there was no formal\ntraining for the classical guitar (which I mostly play). <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Della, my wife, had five years of\npiano and keyboard training, but had not played keyboards since she was a\nteenager.  Charlotte Bartow, Bob\u2019s wife, literally became a harpist in the\nmidst of our worship.  She had never played harp before in her life. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Her sister-in-law, Sandy Storer<\/span>, who played the old English recorder, also began\nplaying it for the first time in her life in the midst of this spontaneous\nworship.  The list goes on and on, numbering from a dozen to as many as\nforty different musicians and singers gathered together at any given time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Practice and training had nothing\nto do with it.  When the Holy Spirit began to flow through us, the worship\nmusic that emerged spanned the gamut of musical expression, sounding as though\nit were carefully orchestrated and directed.  Well, it was.  We just\ndidn\u2019t have a human director in front of us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So, what\u2019s the point?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As this\nworship began to flow, revelation likewise began to flow.  More times than\nI can count, we were lifted \u2013 individually and corporately \u2013 into the heavenlies<\/span> and allowed to see angelic hosts going forth to\ndo battle throughout the earth on behalf of God\u2019s people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Correspondingly,\nwe saw the miraculous (I use that word carefully) take place.  People were\nsaved, baptized in the Holy Spirit, delivered from evil spirits, healed, made\nwhole \u2013 you name it \u2013 as we worshipped.   It happened without laying\nhands on anyone.  It happened without being preceded by prayer, or\nteaching, or anything.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So what has\nthis to do with prophecy?  Just this.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The longer we\nspent in the presence of the Lord, the more revelation flowed.  I don\u2019t\nmean revelation in the sense of foretelling.  This was a revelation of the\nperson and nature of Jesus Christ, who He is, what He is, His plan and purpose\nfor His people, etc., etc.  It was, to say the least, revolutionary!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The ongoing\nrevelation made Scripture alive!  It began to leap to life within our\nbeings in a way I really struggle to describe.  John the beloved wrote in\nRevelation 19:19<\/span>\u2026\u201dfor the testimony of Jesus is the spirit\nof prophecy.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>That testimony is the revelation that began to flow in our beings in the\nmidst of the worship \u2013 dwelling in the presence of the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now, let\u2019s get\nto the core of this.  Let me ask you a few questions so we can lay some\ngroundwork.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why did Jesus\ncome in the first place?  If your answer is, \u201cto save us from sin,\u201d then\nyou\u2019ve really missed it.  He had to save us from sin as a tiny, little\npart of the overall package.  Salvation is a piece of the plan, but it is\nhardly the plan.  Let\u2019s go back a little farther in time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why are we\nhere on the earth?  The Apostle Paul wrote (see Ephesians 3:8-9<\/span>),<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201cI \u2026 preach among the Gentiles the\nunsearchable riches of Christ\u2026to make all men see what is the fellowship of the\nmystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who\ncreated all things by Jesus Christ..\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John wrote\n(see Revelation 4:11),<\/span> <\/span>\u201c..for thou hast created all things, and\nfor thy pleasure they are and were created.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s get a\nlittle more specific.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again we read\nfrom the Apostle Paul, (Ephesians 1)<\/span> <\/span>\u201cHaving made known unto us the mystery of\nhis will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:\nThat in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in\none all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth;\neven in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance..\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the other\nside of this picture is (continuing in Ephesians 1),<\/span> <\/span>\u201cWherefore I also\u2026..cease not to give\nthanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord\nJesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and\nrevelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being\nenlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the\nriches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints..\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The picture in\nthese four passages is staggering.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First<\/span><\/u>, Jesus Christ created us. <\/span> <\/span>Secondly<\/span><\/u>, we were created for His pleasure. <\/span> <\/span>Third<\/span><\/u>, we have an inheritance in Him. <\/span> <\/span>Fourth<\/span><\/u>, He has an inheritance in us. <\/span> <\/span>Fifth<\/span><\/u>, Jesus Christ has a calling, and that call\nis us!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are you\nbeginning to see the picture?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus Christ\ncreated us for union with Him!  We were created for fellowship with\nHim.  We were created to become one with Him.  His objective from day\nOne was to have a people with whom He could be complete.  We all know that\nwe are called to Him, and that we have an inheritance in Him, but that is only\nhalf the picture. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

His calling to\nus is in us, and His inheritance is in us.  Without that being achieved,\nCreation becomes an empty exercise.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Without both\nhalves of this picture, any testimony of Jesus Christ is incomplete. \nWithout His purpose integrated into this Plan, any revelation of Jesus is\nincomplete. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If, therefore,\nthe testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of prophecy, then it follows that\nprophecy \u2013 all prophecy \u2013 must lead us to His receiving His inheritance in us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The spirit of\nprophecy, therefore, is the testimony and revelation of who Jesus Christ is,\nwhat He is in us, what He is doing, and where He is taking us as a people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
