Well, you know how it is!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When Thanksgiving comes, everyone's scurrying around, getting\ntheir turkey, the dressing fixin's<\/span>, cranberries,\nsweet potatoes, and all that other stuff that goes with a Thanksgiving\ndinner.  If you're like a lot of folks, you wait until the last moment, hoping\nfor sales, looking for turkeys at 39 cents a pound (is there such a thing as\nturkeys at 39 cents a pound anymore?), and everything becomes a mad rush.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway, Good Mornin<\/span>' to ya<\/span>!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hope\nyou're not in that group of last-minuters<\/span>.  Hmmmmm<\/span>.......is there such a word as "minuters<\/span>"?  If not, guess I just invented it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nmade the statement once upon a time that tradition holds that the first\nThanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 between the Wampanoag Indians and the\nPilgrims.  My friend, Jim -- being a good Virginian and all -- was quick\nto correct me, and sent me the following bit of history.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\n Gave Thanks for their Safe Arrival in the New World

\n The first Thanksgiving occurred when Captain John Woodlief<\/span>\n led the newly arrived English colonists to a grassy slope along the James River\n and instructed them to drop to their knees and pray in thanks for a safe\n arrival to the New World.
\n
\n On this day, Dec. 4, 1619, these 38 men from Berkeley Parish in England were\n given the instructions:
\n
\n "Wee ordaine<\/span> that the day of our ships arrivall<\/span> at the place assigned for plantacion<\/span>\n in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually keept<\/span>\n holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God."<\/i>

\n This saying is now carved on a brick gazebo, where it is believed that Woodlief<\/span> knelt down beside the<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nlet\u2019s get to the meat of this Coffee Break.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ephesians\n5:18<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ\nJesus concerning you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ever\nwonder why?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let's\ntake a quick look at a couple other verses of Scripture.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nPsalm 116:16-19, David writes,<\/span> <\/span>O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of\nthine<\/span> handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.  I\nwill offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.  I will pay my\nvows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the\nLORD\u2019S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.<\/span>\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nlet's reverse course for a minute and draw a picture of the unthankful.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paul,\nin writing to Timothy, says (see II Timothy 3:2-7),<\/span> <\/span>For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters,\nproud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful<\/u>, unholy,\nWithout natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce,\ndespisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded<\/span>,\nlovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but\ndenying the power thereof: from such turn away.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme pause for a second to point out that one of the attributes of this\n"last days" people is unthankfulness<\/b><\/span>. \nNotice what the unthankful possess otherwise as attributes: they are\nboastful,         proud, disobedient to parents,\nunholy, lacking natural affection (this also applies to homosexual\nrelationships), truce or agreement-breakers, false accusers, all over the place\non just about anything you can think of, (including being double-minded and\nlacking in self-control), savage in their attacks on others, despising and\nrejecting things that are virtuous or have any virtue, traitorous, arrogant,\npreferring the satiating of their flesh to obeying the Word and Will of God,\nand -- most importantly -- being religious: that is, having the pretense of a\nrelationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, but denying AND LACKING the power and\nthe authority that goes with a true relationship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whewww<\/span><\/span>!!!  How's that\nfor a description of the unthankful?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nthere's more.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead\ncaptive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever\nlearning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nyou go!  Apart from the fact that the unthankful are burdened with sexual\npromiscuity, these are the folks that are always seeking after more and more\neducation, more and more learning, and NEVER have the ability to come to any\nknowledge of the Truth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Know\nwhat that is?  Yup.  That's a curse!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nunthankful continually eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,\nlearning more and more and more....and staying just as ignorant of the Truth as\nthey were before they began their quest for knowledge.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So,\nif that's the curse of unthankfulness<\/span>, what's the\nblessing?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Glad\nyou asked.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nDeuteronomy 28, God is speaking to Moses and telling him of all the blessings\nthat will come upon Israel, and specifically those people that keep His\ncommandments, and He says -- in part:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt<\/span>\nhearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all\nhis commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set\nthee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come\non thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt<\/span> hearken\nunto the voice of the LORD thy God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Blessed shalt<\/span> thou be in the city, and\nblessed shalt<\/span> thou be in the field.  Blessed\nshall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of\nthy cattle, the increase of thy kine<\/span>, and the flocks\nof thy sheep.  Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.  Blessed shalt<\/span> thou be when thou comest<\/span>\nin, and blessed shalt<\/span> thou be when thou goest<\/span> out....<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthere's more -- a whole LOT MORE!!!<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nhow do we connect this to thanksgiving.  Watch.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

After\nreciting a whole list of curses that will come upon Israel if they don't keep\nGod's commandments, He says,<\/span> <\/span>Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue\nthee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst<\/span> not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep\nhis commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee: And they shall be\nupon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever.  Because\nthou servedst<\/span> not the LORD thy God with joyfulness,\nand with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whoaa<\/span><\/span>!  See it?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because you didn't serve the Lord with joyfulness and with\ngladness of heart for the abundance of all that the Lord gave you.<\/span> <\/span> In\nshort, because you were unappreciative and unthankful for the blessings of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Put\ntwo and two together, and you have blessings that come upon those who are\nthankful and appreciative -- those who give the Lord the due honor and\nthanksgiving for His being the source of all that they have.  The opposite\ncorollary is that a curse -- make that many curses -- comes upon those who are\nunthankful, unappreciative of that which they have, and neglect to give credit\nand honor to the Lord God as the source of that which they have.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\nnation on the face of the earth has been so blessed as<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

America<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

.  No nation on earth has ever\nprospered the way we have.  And no other nation on earth has the unique\ndistinction of honoring the Lord and giving Him the due credit for the\nblessings this nation has enjoyed for more than two centuries.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nmore thing and I'll quit for today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis an interesting word in the Hebrew that gets translated,\n"thanksgiving."  That word is<\/span> <\/span>todah<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>and it has an interesting\netymology.  Deriving from<\/span> <\/span>yadah<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, which means: to\nstretch forth one's hands (with an accompanying confession), it denotes a place\nof subjection or obeisance to one's benefactor.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Those\nof you familiar with<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Middle East<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

customs know that when a Jew or an\nArab desires to thank someone, they do it with a physical demonstration. \nThere is no specific word for "thank you" in either Hebrew or Arabic,\nbut rather there is the custom of putting one's hands together with palms\nupright and extending them forward, then bowing somewhat toward the individual\nthey wish to acknowledge or honor as the giver of some gift or blessing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nword,<\/span> <\/span>yadah<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, comes from its\nroot,<\/span> <\/span>yad<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>which denotes one's\nhand as a symbol or extension of power and authority.  The extension of\nthe open hands with palms upward of the recipient acknowledges the power,\ntherefore, of the giver to give or bestow a gift or a blessing or a reward upon\none deemed worthy -- hence it was a way to say, "Thank You".<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nDavid refers to "the sacrifice of thanksgiving," he is referring to a\npractice of demonstrating honor and acknowledgement to the Lord as His being\nthe source of everything -- and giving that "sacrifice" in the face\nof one's need.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus,\nputting this in present context, if I have need of something I come before the\nLord and thank Him for that which I need -- even before I have actually\nreceived it.  It is both a sacrifice and an offering of thanks.  It\nis a recognition that my job is not my source of supply, that my friends are\nnot my source of supply, that the bank is not my source, that my talents and\nskills are not my source: God is my entire and total source of supply --\nwhether He chooses to use my skills, my talents, my employment or whatever.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He,\ntherefore, is the recipient of my thanks -- and I am all the more blessed\nbecause of it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, take some time -- lots of time -- over the next few days to consider where\nyou are, what you have, and all that the Lord has built and developed in\nyou.  If you aren't satisfied with what you see, give the Lord thanks\nanyway for everything.  Continue to thank Him and bless Him.  Then\nwatch in the days and weeks and months ahead as things change for the better,\nas your lot improves, as you begin to be even more and more blessed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Don't\n-- whatever you do -- be counted among the unthankful wretches who demand their\n"rights" and never bother to thank and to acknowledge the Lord for\nall they do have.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Enjoy\nthis Thanksgiving season.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
