ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: UNDERSTANDING PROPHECY<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Howdy, Howdy!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Temperature sure is different in these parts.  I thought I\nwas still pretty much an Alaskan, but after this past year in central Texas,\nsomething sure has changed.  Got up yesterday morning, and it was 30\ndegrees here in Selah, Washington.  (We are visiting and staying with very\nclose friends.)  Didn\u2019t feel much like it used to when I was a kid running\naround Barrow, Alaska.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I remember those long days\u2026.uhhh<\/span>,\nnights (you know, the continual days of perpetual darkness \u2013 66 of them in\nBarrow)\u2026..during the winter when the temperature would hover around the minus\n45 mark for weeks on end.  Suddenly, we\u2019d have a heat wave.  The\ntemperature would shoot up to zero.  Can\u2019t tell you how many times I ran\noutside in my tee-shirt at zero exclaiming about how warm it was.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Yup, times have changed.  Or maybe I have.  You think?<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And what\u2019s all this baloney I hear about global warming? \nOne of these days, you ought to go on the Internet and check out Joe Bastardi\u2019s<\/span> commentary on global warming.   I\u2019m no\nmeteorologist, but Joe sure is.  He\u2019s tracked the weather patterns around\nthe globe going back for centuries, and says that \u201cglobal warming\u201d is just so\nmuch political hype on the part of extremists who are pushing a socialist\nagenda.  Joe says that the planet goes through natural cyclical warming\nand cooling every 500 years.  The Weather Channel folks apparently agree\nwith him on that, too.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK. \nEnough prattle.  My coffee\u2019s poured, and I\u2019m ready for my go-juice \u2026 as\nsoon as it cools down enough so I can drink it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Periodically,\nduring the past 11 years of publishing these Coffee Breaks, I done articles on\nprophecy and prophets. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Have\nyou ever looked at the lives of those Old Testament prophets, or considered the\nthings they went through in order to convey the Word of the Lord? \nProphets of the modern era \u2013 those that are real, that is \u2013 pretty much\nparallel those from the days of Samuel, David, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Ezekiel,\nJeremiah, Hosea, and all.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No,\nthey don\u2019t run out into the desert and eat locusts and wild honey, like John\nthe Baptist did, and I don\u2019t think they lay on their side for a year like\nEzekiel was instructed to do; but the Lord pretty much deals with prophets\ntoday like He did back then.  They become the Word that they are instructed\nto deliver.  Their lives often parallel the message they are sent to\ndeliver.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\ngot a lot of folks today that dote on End Times, the Great Tribulation, the\nRapture, and all of that; and they get a pretty big following in churches with\nall their \u201cprophecies\u201d and predictions.  Some people even like to call\nthem prophets.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nawwww<\/span><\/span>.  Huh Uhh<\/span>!  Nope!  They\u2019re not prophets.  They\ndon\u2019t live the word they preach, and most of them have never heard the Lord\nspeak to them in person.  They\u2019ve just done some figuring of their own,\nstuck a bunch of scriptures together to make it fit theirparticular<\/span>\nmindset or religious agenda, and called it the Word of the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\ndoesn\u2019t work like that.  That doesn\u2019t mean that everything they\u2019ve studied\nor figured out is all wrong.  A lot of it is, but that\u2019s beside the\npoint.  That just isn\u2019t how the Lord works.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Prophecy,\nyou see, is a living Word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord.  It\nusually gets spoken through His chosen representatives rather than His uttering\nthunderous words like He did from the top of Mount Sinai in Moses\u2019 time, but it\nis still a current, living, breathing Word that imposes change in the lives of\nthose to whom it is sent.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nchange isn\u2019t fear, either!  It doesn\u2019t drive folks to panic, and it isn\u2019t\nspoken in vague, mystical terms that cause people to scratch their heads and\ntry to figure out what\u2019s been said.  Prophecy \u2013 real prophecy \u2013 comes\nthrough the Spirit of Prophecy; and that\u2019s one of the five principal attributes\nor character facets of the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntalk about that for a second.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwas an Apostle \u2013 meaning He was sent by the Father.  He was a Prophet \u2013\nmeaning that He knew the full picture of the past, present and future; and He\nshared His plans and purposes for His people.  He was an Evangelist \u2013\nmeaning He came \u201cto seek and to save that which was lost.\u201d <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwas a Pastor.  Actually, a pastor \u2013 again, a real one \u2013 is someone who\nshepherds people, watches over them, makes sure they get fed and cared\nfor.   Peter refers to Jesus in his epistles (see I Peter 5:4) as the\nChief Shepherd.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally,\nJesus was a Teacher.  He patiently explained the principles of His Kingdom\nto all who would listen.  He taught the multitudes.  He taught His\ndisciples.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

See\nthe picture?  Jesus was what we sometimes refer as the \u201cFive-fold\u201d\nministry all rolled into one person.  It was who He was and is.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nhad these nice, sanitary, religious terms that have been popular during the\npast centuries so folks can avoid the use of \u201capostle\u201d or \u201cprophet\u201d or even\n\u201cteacher\u201d because Satan has robbed God\u2019s people through the current church\nsystem of understanding who and what Jesus\u2019 ministry is all about.  We\u2019ve\nhad a religious taboo about using the terms \u201capostle\u201d and \u201cprophet\u201d because\n\u201cthose folks back in Jesus\u2019 day were really Holy!  They walked and talked\nwith Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Yes. \nThey did.  But someone please tell me what makes them holier than the\npeople that Jesus walks and talks with today?  I thought that Jesus Christ\nwas the same, yesterday, today, and forever.  At least that\u2019s what Paul\nwrote.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nJesus was Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher all rolled into one\nwhen He walked and talked on the Earth, why is it He is suddenly no longer all\nthose things?  And where did we get this ridiculous religious term,\n\u201cmissionary\u201d?  <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Missionary? \nOK, break that word down.  Mission\u2026.  Let\u2019s see.  The last time\nI checked, a mission was what someone was sent to do. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hmmmmm<\/span><\/span>\u2026.  Sent? \nIsn\u2019t that the definition of what we call \u201capostle\u201d?  In the Greek, the\nword,<\/span> <\/span>apostolos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, simply means: one\nsent forth, one commissioned and sent on a particular mission<\/u>.  So how\ncome we have to get religious about it and call an apostle a\n\u201cmissionary.\u201d  Think maybe it\u2019s because we don\u2019t want to admit that the\nLord still calls and sends people forth today the way He did when He walked and\ntalked on the earth?  \u201cApostle\u201d isn\u2019t a title for some Holy office. \nIt\u2019s a mission.  It\u2019s a calling.  It\u2019s something the Lord sends\npeople forth with: a commission.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsame is true of a prophet. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

See! \nWe really are going to talk about prophets.  I was just laying some\nfoundations in your understanding so you\u2019d get the picture.  The real\npicture \u2013 not a religious one.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\nagain, the Greek word for prophet is<\/span>\n<\/span>prophetes<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/b>  It comes from two root words in\nthe Greek language:<\/span> <\/span>pro<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/b>and<\/span><\/span> <\/span>phemi<\/span><\/i><\/b>.Pro<\/i>,<\/span><\/b>of<\/span><\/span> course, is a common\npreposition simply denoting in front of<\/u>, or before<\/u>. <\/span> <\/span>Phemi<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>\n<\/span>comes\nfrom a pair of other Greek words and simply means: to show, or make known\none\u2019s thoughts; to speak, or to say<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Simple,\nright?  A prophet, therefore, is just like an apostle in the sense that he\nor she is sent on a mission to speak or to convey the thoughts and intentions\nof the Lord Jesus Christ.  It, like that of the apostle, is a calling \u2013\nnot some Holy title or office.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwasn\u2019t into titles and offices.  In fact, He specifically forbade the\ndisciples to engage in the use of titles and offices (see Matthew 23: 8-10)\nlike the Pharisees and Sadducees did.  He forbid the use of pomp and\nceremony, and commanded His disciples to function as servants saying,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cBut he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019m\ngetting a bit off track here, so let me return to the topic of prophets, and\nhow the Lord calls them, or deals with them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\napostle Paul wrote, describing it like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ephesians 2:19-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span><\/b> <\/span>Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but\nfellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built\nupon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being\nthe chief corner stone.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nso saying, Paul describes those called to apostolic and prophetic ministry as\nfoundational.  That\u2019s what I want to deal with.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\norder to lay foundations, a builder has to know exactly where he is\ngoing.  He has to have the plan laid out, drawn out, and detailed before\nhim.  Jesus Christ is both the Master Builder, and the chief corner stone\n\u2013 meaning that He has laid out the plan to establish for Himself a\npeople.  As the chief corner stone, he is the guide marker, the first laid\nstone by which the entire building gets its bearings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\napostles and prophets are the builders \u2013 the construction supervisors, if you\nwill \u2013 who know the plan and deliver the instructions to the workers. \nApostles lay the foundation of the building by virtue of their\ncommission.  They go forth to build, to establish in the lives of people\nwho\u2019ve never had the proper foundations laid the basis for a relationship with\nJesus Christ.   They often work in tandem with prophets who deliver\nthe instructional, directive, and sometimes corrective Word that steers the\ngrowth of folks in their relationship with the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sometimes\nthose called to apostolic ministry are also anointed for prophetic\nministry.  The reverse is also true.  There are those whose primary\ncalling or anointing \u2013 as we sometimes call it \u2013 is prophetic, but they also\nfunction apostolically.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntalk about these two callings for a minute.  The apostle Paul describes\nhimself as one who saw the Lord personally,<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201cas of one born out of due time,\u201d<\/span>\n<\/span>meaning\nthat he was not one of the original twelve, but chosen as part of that first\ntwelve to fulfill the original sending forth.  (See I Corinthians 15:8)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Each\nof the original twelve saw Jesus personally.  They walked and talked with\nHim.  He was their constant companion.  By virtue of their walk and\ntalk with Him in person, He conveyed His intentions and purposes \u2013 the master\nbuilding plan, if you will \u2013 in a way that none of them could possibly mistake.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

His\npurposes, His calling, His plan \u2013 none of it \u2013 were mysteries to the original\ntwelve.  There was nothing hidden to them \u2013 well, almost nothing! \nThey didn\u2019t know when He was going to come back, but that wasn\u2019t\nimportant.  What was important was that they get on with the task of\nbuilding an Ekklesia<\/span> for Him \u2013 a cohesive people who\nknew Him personally, walked with him in and after the Spirit, and knew His calling\nto them.  Ekklesia<\/span> was the calling together and\npreparation of a people for a day when they would be united as One in the same\nway that a bridegroom and bride are joined.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Among\nthose first twelve were some who were actually referred to as prophets, rather\nthan apostles, even though they were all called to apostolic ministry.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\ndistinguished them apart from the rest of the body of Christ was the fact that\nthey walked and talked with Him in person.  They administered over and\nsupervised the early growth of the Ekklesia<\/span> as a\nwhole, and the individual Ekklesias<\/span> in the towns,\ncities, and communities where they traveled.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nothing\nhas changed in that today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

People\nare still being called to apostolic and prophetic ministries for the very same\nreason.  The religious structure of our churches hates to admit it, and in\nfact, we have many \u2013 if not most \u2013 major denominations denying the existence of\napostolic and prophetic callings today, to their own sorrow and detriment.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\ndistinguishes these people from other callings like those of the pastor, the\nteacher, or the evangelist, is that they \u2013 like the original twelve \u2013 also\nexperience the personal and visible presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in the\ncourse of being called by Him.  With that often comes a period of walking\nand talking with Him in person \u2013 visibly.  For some it comes as it did for\nPaul on the road to Damascus where the Lord appears suddenly and dramatically,\nbringing them to a halt in their normal course of affairs.  For others, it\ncomes as a vision.  For others yet, it comes in the form of dreams and\neven the ongoing audible voice of the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\neach case, there is that distinct and very visible presence of the Lord, and a\nvery direct and audible call from Him to accomplish a specific mission. \nWith that kind of call comes an authority and a purpose that cannot be shaken \u2013\nno matter what happens in their lives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nauthority supersedes the less foundational callings such as that of the\nevangelist or pastor or teacher.  Those who have the less foundational and\nmore nurturing callings, however, clearly recognize and know the authority that\ncomes from those who are foundational.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve\nmet folks who refer to themselves as \u201cevangelists\u201d who, in fact, are anointed\nwith apostolic or prophetic callings.  Because it isn\u2019t popular to refer\nto themselves as apostles or prophets because of the way in which religious\nspirits have demeaned those who are supposedly of lesser importance, some\nso-called \u201cevangelists\u201d are really prophets cloaked in the appearance of\nevangelists.  Same with the so-called \u201cmissionaries.\u201d  Missionaries\nwho are called by the Lord and sent forth to do that kind of foundational work,\nwho also meet the other criteria for having walked personally with the Lord,\nare in fact operating in an apostolic calling.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nthe same token, there are lots of folks running around as would-be prophets or\napostles \u2013 and even referred to as such by some in the body of Christ \u2013 who do\nnot meet the criteria.  They\u2019ve never heard the Lord or seen Him in\nperson.  They\u2019ve never walked with Him or actually received specific\ncalling, purpose and direction from Him.  Some of them are pastors who\naspire to apostolic or prophetic callings, but simply haven\u2019t been anointed or\ncalled by the Lord as such.  Some are evangelists who likewise have\nneither been called or anointed to prophetic or apostolic ministry but have\ntaken the title and position to themselves without authorization from the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nresults in a cheapening of the true authority of the Lord because the word and\nthe results that follow do not measure up.  They speak with a supposed\nauthority, but the Lord doesn\u2019t back it up with accompanying proofs.  They\nproduce a sickly body of people who don\u2019t really know the Lord as He desires\nthem to know Him.  These would-be apostles or prophets produce folks from\ntheir ministries who lack authority and the \u201csigns following\u201d that Jesus\npromised.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why? \nBecause they can\u2019t believe what isn\u2019t given in Truth.  They can\u2019t trust\nwhat doesn\u2019t come from True authority \u2013 the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nLord Jesus Christ NEVER appears to someone in person and calls them to fulfill\na specific apostolic or prophetic mission without giving them the accompanying\nproofs of that calling in the form of signs, wonders, AND a healthy body of\nbelievers whose lives likewise produce those same proofs.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Well,\nit appears that I didn\u2019t get to my goal today of sharing with you the\npreparation process that the Lord takes his apostles and prophets through so\nthey can accomplish what He sends them forth to do.  Guess that\u2019ll wait\nfor next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
