ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 19<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

October\n 21, 2016<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Last week I had to stop when we started talking about baptism,\nand Jesus\u2019 understanding of this.  Let me do a bit of a refresher for\nyou on the significance of what was about to take place.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus gave us the following command as He prepared to ascend into\nHeaven:<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 28:18-20:<\/span><\/u><\/b>And Jesus came and spake<\/span> unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in\nheaven and in earth.  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,\nbaptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy\nGhost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have\ncommanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway<\/span>, even\nunto the end of the world. Amen.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider, then, the statement that Paul makes in his letter to\nthe Ekklesia<\/span> in Rome:<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Romans 6:3-11 (NASB)<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\u201cDo you not know that all\nof us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His\ndeath?  Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into\ndeath, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the\nFather, so we too might walk in newness of life. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His\ndeath, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing\nthis, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin\nmight be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he\nwho has died is freed from sin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cNow if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also\nlive with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never\nto die again; death no longer is master over Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When Jesus, therefore, made the statement, <\/span><\/b>\u201cAll power<\/span>(the word in the Greek text is <\/span><\/b>exousia<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> \u2013\nauthority) <\/span><\/b>is given unto me in Heaven and in Earth,\u201dHe<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span>\nclearly understood \u2013 and was communicating this to us \u2013 that baptism was a\ncritical part of the necessary ability to transition from the so-called\n\u201cnatural realm\u201d to the \u201csupernatural.\u201d  And that brings us back to\nwhere we left off last week.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwell understood the purposes of baptism.  The \u201cnormal\u201d man, Jesus,\nhad to die and be buried so that the Spirit-led and Spirit-filled Jesus could\nbegin to show the world \u2014 and specifically those who would accept and\nacknowledge Him for Who and What He was and is \u2014 just how it is possible to\nreturn to that place of intimacy with God we were first designed and destined\nfor.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He,\ntherefore, found his \u201cnatural\u201d cousin, John the Baptist.  Matthew\nrecords the following narrative:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 3:13-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be\nbaptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of\nthee, and comest<\/span> thou to me? And Jesus answering said\nunto him, Suffer it to be so<\/i> now: for thus it becometh<\/span> us to fulfil<\/span> all righteo<\/u>usness.\nThen he suffered him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the\nwater: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God\ndescending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven,\nsaying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nalso discussed this in time past, but Jesus had to transition from <\/span>teknon<\/span><\/i><\/b>to<\/span><\/span> <\/span>Huios<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  As\na <\/span>teknon<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, He was \u2014 as Paul describes in\nGalatians 4:2 --<\/span>\u201cbeing under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the\nfather<\/span>\u201d\n\u2014 walking, learning obedience, learning what it meant to hear and respond ONLY\nto what Father said, and watching how Father would conduct Himself in His place\n(in other words, what Father would do.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nappointed day came.  The natural man, Jesus, died and was buried in\nthe waters of baptism.  What came out of the water was a Jesus (still\noperating in human form, yet now having access as a human being to the realm of\nthe Spirit), raised into newness of life and readied by Father to demonstrate\nto the world just what a Holy Spirit-filled and \u2013led individual could\naccomplish when they walked in the Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nsaw the heavens opened.  He heard Father\u2019s voice repeating what every\nJewish boy had heard for centuries when they transitioned in life to a place\nwhere their father would release his authority to them, giving them the signet\nring and seal of his authority to conduct business exactly as he would conduct\nbusiness: <\/span>\u201cThis is My Beloved Son, in Whom I AM well pleased!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwas now a matured (still human) Son of God, empowered with God\u2019s seal of\nauthority in and by the presence and indwelling of Holy Spirit.  He\nwas ready to show us where the Paths of Righteousness would lead.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nvery first thing Jesus had to do was to have that power of the Holy Spirit in\nHim put to the test.  Matthew says He was led of<\/span>\nthe Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  Mark says\nHe was \u201cdriven\u201d by the Spirit into the wilderness.  In any case, the\nbeginning place of this phase of walking in the Paths of Righteousness\nabsolutely HAD to be the overcoming of the same fears that beset the human race\nwith Adam and Eve\u2019s partaking of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nhad to overcome the Fear of Evil, the Fear of Man and the Fear of Death in\norder to accomplish what Father sent Him to do.  And Satan was about\nto make a play that \u2014 if successful \u2014 would render Jesus a slave just like the\nrest of humanity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Satan\nwaits until Jesus is at his weakest \u2014 following 40 days of fasting \u2014 and tempts\nHim to use His newly-returned access to the God-powers He had forsaken to come\nto earth .<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cIF thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made\nbread.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Every\nquestion Satan throws at Jesus is going to be pretty much the same basic\nquestion thrown at Eve in the Garden.  \u201cYou\u2019re NOT REALLY\ncreated in the image and likeness of God, are you?  Come on\nnow!  If you eat of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good\nand Evil, THEN you will prove that you are as God!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthe first temptation came with eating.  Jesus\u2019 human flesh was at its\nweakest, not having had any food to eat for 40 days.  The first\ntemptation Satan throws at Him is like the first temptation in the\nGarden.  \u201cIF you are really the Son of God, then you can prove\nit by commanding these stones to become bread so you can eat and satiate your\nhunger.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nmay not be immediately obvious,  but when a person passes the 39th\nday of fasting, actual starvation begins and the flesh begins to die a slow\nprocess.  Hence, the temptation to eat at that moment was to\nchallenge the Fear of Death by natural reasoning, and Jesus wasn\u2019t having any\nof it!  Watch how He deals with the natural cravings and demands of\nHis own flesh.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt is written!  Man shall not live by bread alone, but\nby every Word that proceedeth<\/span> out of the mouth of\nGod.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Get\nit?  Father God had not yet released Jesus to eat food!  He\nwas ONLY going to live and operate based on the living <\/span>rhema<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> Word that was\nactually being spoken at THAT moment by God \u2014 never mind what His flesh was\nscreaming.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ahh<\/span><\/span>, but Satan isn\u2019t\neven beginning to be through yet.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nnext thing he does is to transport Jesus into Jerusalem and set Him on the\npinnacle of the temple.  \u201cYou still believe that you are the\nSon of God?  OK.  Prove it!  Throw yourself off\nthe pinnacle!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(And\nnow Satan uses a trick he\u2019s been using for millennia against\npeople.  He quotes the Word of God \u2014 but totally out of\ncontext.  \u201cIt is written, He shall give His angels charge\nconcerning thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest thou dash thy\nfoot against a stone.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see it?  Now Satan is using God\u2019s Word as a\nlever.  He\u2019s challenging the Word of God, and at the same time trying\nto get Jesus to prove that He is not afraid of death and dying.  And\nthe Fear of Death is once again put to the test.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\u2019\nanswers again from the Word, <\/span>\u201cIt is written again: thou\nshalt<\/span> not tempt the Lord Thy God!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nas happened previously, the Fear of Evil is also being put to the\ntest.  Satan\u2019s temptation is for Jesus to be afraid that God won\u2019t\nreally keep His Word to Him.  The temptation is to take things into\nHis own hands and make his own decision as to what He will do.  And\nJesus was overcoming the Fear of Death and the Fear of Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Evil is going to be put to the test one more time, but this time we are\ngoing to see how Jesus responds to the Fear of Man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\ntime Satan transports Jesus into a very high mountain to show Him the kingdoms\nof the world, along with their glory and magnificence (in the way that men and\nwomen respond and react to the seeming power and authority of the governments\nof man.)  As we saw earlier in the example of Balaam\u2019s responses,\npeople are awed; they are impressed at how individuals are elevated to high\npositions with authority and power.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\nfear that kind of power and authority.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAll these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down\nand worship me.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\none more time, Jesus demonstrates just how much boldness and fearlessness He\nhas, having been empowered by the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cGet thee hence, Satan!  For it is written, Thou shalt<\/span> worship the Lord Thy God, and Him only shalt<\/span> thou serve.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Right!  No\nyielding to the Fear of Man, and certainly no yielding to the Fear of\nEvil!  And Satan has no option but to flee from Jesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[Note:\nThe Greek text uses a fascinating word to describe Satan\u2019s departure: <\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  This is\nthe same word used to describe \u201cthe remission of sins.\u201d  It literally\nmeans: <\/span>to eradicate from\nexistence, to send away (as though it was never there)<\/span>.]<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nwe see what Father does for us when we overcome the Enemy: <\/span>\u201cand, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 That\nword, \u201cministered,\u201d in the Greek text is <\/span>diakoneo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>: <\/span>to be a servant, to wait upon, to serve food\nand drink to, to supply food and the necessities of life.  <\/span>This is the Greek\nword that the religious church world mis<\/span><\/a>-translates as a title and a position in the church rather\nthan simply recognizing it as a function: Deacon.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nany case, Father sent angels to wait upon Jesus, to serve Him, to provide Him\nwith food and sustenance \u2014 both natural and supernatural \u2014 in preparation for\nthe journeys yet ahead.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nbegan His walk in this phase of the Paths of Righteousness in precisely the\nsame way that we must: He overcame the Fear of Evil, the Fear of Man and the\nFear of Death.  And the overcoming was made possible because Jesus\nwas filled and empowered by Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again,\nwe see the necessity of responding to the opportunity presented to us when we\nare taken by the still waters of Holy Spirit.  Without that\nempowerment, we simply have nothing to stand on and nothing to sustain us when\nthe Enemy attempts to seduce, to manipulate, to deceive, to steal and\/or to\ndestroy us.  These paths are going to get exciting!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nweek we will pick back up where we left off a couple of weeks back, the\ndiscussion of the many purposes and objectives set before us in the Paths of\nRighteousness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
