ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 14<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

September\n 16, 2016<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because of where we need to go today with this discussion, let\nme lay<\/span> some foundations.  It may well seem like\nwe\u2019ve strayed from the 23rd<\/sup> Psalm and David\u2019s prophecy,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>He restoreth<\/span> my soul<\/span>, but\nbear with me.  Everything we are discussing right now is absolutely\nrelevant to restoration and the need for restoration.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Hebrew word used in Psalm 23 for \u201crestoreth<\/span>\u201d\nis the word:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>\u00e1eL<\/span><\/span>,<\/span> <\/span><\/b>shub<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>(pronounced\nshoob<\/span>).  Its most literal meaning is \u201cto turn\nback,\u201d and its usage in this instance means, \u201cto return to the starting point.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The \u201cstarting point\u201d in God\u2019s economy is seen in<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Genesis 1:26a:<\/span><\/span><\/b> <\/span>And God (<\/span>the word in the Hebrew text is \u201cElohim<\/span>\u201d\n\u2013 plural for Father, Son & Holy Spirit<\/span><\/i>)\nsaid, Let us make man in our image<\/u>, after our likeness: and let\nthem have dominion\u2026...<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Verse 27 confirms that He did exactly that.  Millennia had\npassed since Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil.  The human race had fallen far from the image and likeness of\nGod.  David understood that and knew by the Spirit that \u201crestoration\u201d\nmeant a return to that same \u201cstarting point.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Without getting back into the picture of the seven nations and\nthe overcoming that Israel failed to accomplish by the flesh, we come to the\nseven letters and the overcoming which MUST take place in and by the\nSpirit.  The letter to Pergamos<\/span> in Revelation 2\nwas a graphic picture of the necessity of overcoming the Fear of Man \u2013 and\nthat\u2019s where we will continue today.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nalready discussed the picture of Balaam and the consequences of his bowing to\nthe Fear of Man.  The doctrine (or teaching) of Balaam was to worship\nidols, to eat things offered to idols and to commit fornication.  The Fear\nof Man was prevalent in every single action and teaching of Balaam.  But Pergamos<\/span>\u2019 failures didn\u2019t stop with the \u201cdoctrine of\nBalaam.\u201d  Pergamos<\/span> had in its midst those who\nheld the \u201cdoctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span>,\u201d and that\u2019s\nwhere we need to go today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nas Cain believed the lies of the Spirit of Rejection and the Fear of Man, so\nalso did Pergamos<\/span>.  Not only was "Satan's\nseat" in their midst, they allowed him to dwell in their midst. \nThat's a nice, poetic way of saying that they permitted him to speak in their\nmidst -- and they listened to what he had to say.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nletter to Pergamos<\/span> begins with,<\/span> <\/span>"These things saith<\/span> He which hath\nthe sharp sword with two edges...."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nwhere was this sword?  In the mouth of the Lord.  (See Revelation\n1:16)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nLord, therefore, was addressing with His mouth -- with the sharp sword which\ncame forth from His mouth -- the lies being perpetrated in their midst by the\nmouth of Satan who was dwelling in their midst.  His sword was the sword\nof truth, as opposed to the mouth of lies, and that sword was going to cut to\nthe truth in their situation!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsword cut to the truth that they were listening to, and being manipulated by,\nThe Fear of Man -- and the sons of The Fear of Man: The Spirit of Rejection,\nand The Fear of Rejection, as they were perpetrated in the doctrine of Balaam.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pergamos<\/span><\/span> not only had those\nwho promoted the doctrine of Balaam, but also those who promoted the doctrine\nof the Nicolaitanes<\/span>.  We have already discussed\nthis at some length in previous Coffee Breaks, and I have referred to the\n"doctrines" (plural) of the Nicolaitanes<\/span>. \nWhen you boil it all down, however, the doctrine (singular) of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> was one: Power to Man. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas manifested two variants which we have discussed: namely, "Power Over\nthe People," and "Power to the People."  Whichever variant\nyou choose, it still had only one root: The Fear of Man.  Let\u2019s take a\nquick look at the significance of these two uses of the contraction of<\/span> <\/span>\u201cnicos<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>(power) and<\/span> <\/span>\u201claos<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>(the common people).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(Note:\nSome Greek dictionaries or lexicons mistakenly translate \u201cNicolaitan<\/span>\u201d\nas \u201ca follower of Nicolaus<\/span> \u2013 a heretic who led many\nbelievers astray.\u201d  The problem is that Nicolaus<\/span>\nwasn\u2019t even born when John wrote the Revelation.  The 4th<\/sup> century\nhistorian, Eusebius, refers to Nicolaus<\/span> as an early 3rd<\/sup> century\nheretic.  He certainly came by his name correctly.  Nicolaus<\/span> DID believe and teach the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span>, but that doctrine was well-established by Nicolaus<\/span>\u2019 day.)<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s\nhow the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> works.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nyou want authority vested in a few, you fear the multitudes.  Hence, you\nfear man.  This doctrine was perpetrated in the early Ekklesias<\/span>\nby \u201cconverted\u201d Sadducees who were proponents of the idea that the multitudes\nwere unable to properly make decisions, and that power needed to be vested in\nan elite, tiered structure.  We refer to this system as\n\u201chierarchical.\u201d  What it amounted to was taking the authority of the Lord\nJesus Christ away from Him and vesting it a few who were supposed to \u201cspeak for\nand on behalf of the Lord.\u201d  The teaching completely ignored the\nleadership and teaching of Holy Spirit within the life of the believer.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nyou want authority vested in a system when everyone has a \u201cvote," you fear\ncentral authority in a man, or a group of men.  It substitutes theocracy\nfor democracy.  This aspect was promoted by \u201cconverted\u201d Pharisees within\nthe Ekklesias<\/span>.  Hence, you still fear man. \n(Much of the modern evangelical church structure is predicated on democratic structure. \nThe so-called \u201cCharismatic Renewal\u201d of the 60\u2019s, 70\u2019s and early 80\u2019s did much\nto eliminate the structures, whether they were hierarchical or democratic, but\nthe doctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> still exists today\nwithin the body of Christ.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[It\u2019s\nworth noting that America was NOT founded as a democracy!  This nation was\nfounded as a \u201cRepublic\u201d by our founding fathers, following the pattern that God\ngave to Moses for the governance of Israel.  The fact that we fell as a\nnation into democracy was a perversion that has rapidly been becoming\nanarchy.] <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again,\nthe doctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> was to take the\nauthority away from the Lord, and therefore, to vest that authority in a man,\nor a few men, or a lot of men -- but still, man!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Got\nthe picture?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis still precisely the same thing which happened in the Garden when Satan\ndeceived Adam and Eve into eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil.  They took the decision-making authority away from the Lord in their\nlives, and vested it in their "knowledge of good and evil."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ndoctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> was to take the\nauthority away from the Lord in the governing of the Ekklesias<\/span>,\nand vest it (by a vote) in those who take the titles of apostles, prophets,\nevangelists, pastors, and teachers -- at first.  All under the guise of\nthe governance of the Lord, you understand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Please\ndon\u2019t misunderstand what I\u2019m saying here.  God clearly ordained (and\nstill ordains!<\/b>) apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors (or shepherds) and\nteachers.  The difference is that HE does the calling, and HE does the\nordaining \u2013 NOT by a vote of the people or their leaders.  There is a\nspecific and visible anointing of Holy Spirit in and upon those who genuinely\nare called and appointed by God, and that anointing clearly defines and\nseparates those who are anointed, and those who are not.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ndoctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span> quickly devolved into<\/span> <\/span>episkopos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, presbuteros<\/i><\/span>,<\/span><\/b> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>diakonos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And then in bishops -- and what have you -- with so many\ntiers of beaurocracy<\/span> it just became ludicrous. \nAny semblance of personal intimacy with the Lord was gone completely.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For\nthe sake of definition of the Greek terms, the word,<\/span> <\/span>episkopos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, describes someone\nwith prophetic oversight \u2013 who can see ahead into the plan and purpose of God\nand provide that oversight to the Ekklesias<\/span>. \nThis word has been translated in many NT translations as \u201cBishop\u201d and \u2013\ndepending on your church upbringing \u2013 represents someone who has been titled as\nsuch by a decision of those \u201cabove\u201d him in an ecclesiastical hierarchy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreek word,<\/span> <\/span>presbuteros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, comes from its\nroot,<\/span> <\/span>presbus<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, for \u201colder,\u201d or \u201ca\nsenior\u201d \u2013 one who is experienced and well-seasoned by years.  It is the\nword translated as \u201celder\u201d in the NT.  It was not a title.  It simply\nrepresented those who were well-seasoned in the Lord, in the Word, and in the\nways of the Lord.  (The modern usage of this word is, Presbyter.)  No\none voted or decided that certain individuals were \u201celders.\u201d  They were\nelders by reason of their years, their experience and seasoning in God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Lastly,\nwe have the word,<\/span> <\/span>diakonos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/b>  Used today as\na title for someone who is \u201ca deacon,\u201d the word literally means \u201cservant,\nwaiter \u2013 one who carries out and executes the commands of another.\u201d  To\nput this word in its proper context, you understand that Jesus referred to\nHimself as<\/span> <\/span>diakonos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, and encouraged His\ndisciples to place themselves as those who both executed the commands of Father\nGod, and served the Ekklesias<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My\napologies for taking time for these descriptions, but what I\u2019m getting at is\nthe fact that the Fear of Man has turned these descriptive words into titles\nand positions from which power and authority can be used over the so-called\n\u201ccommon people\u201d in such a way as to elevate the \u201ctitled ones\u201d above everyone\nelse.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Above\nand beyond this, it robbed those who were serving in the ministries of\napostles, prophets, pastors, etc., of the intimacy in their relationship with\nthe Lord by creating a false responsibility for a false government with a beaurocracy<\/span> within the Body of Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Is\nit any wonder, therefore, that the Lord repeatedly said,<\/span> <\/span>"which thing I hate!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

See\nwhat the Fear of Man does to a person?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nare some other graphic pictures in the Word where we see this spirit at work,\nbut let\u2019s leave it here and move on in our discussion to dealing with the Fear\nof Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

NOW\nyou can see why the restoration of our soul is so critical!  Without being\nrid of these wicked and compromising spirits in our lives, true restoration is\nimpossible.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nkind of taken these in reverse order but the Fear of Evil is the granddaddy of\nall fears \u2014 regardless of what they are called or how they are named.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nDavid wrote,<\/span> <\/span>He restoreth<\/span> my soul<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>he\nwas describing from a prophetic perspective an adventure in God that sets the\nstage for going forward in everything that God is out to accomplish.\n Without this restoration \u2014 and specifically, restoration from the spirits\nof fear \u2014 we will literally freeze up in our future growth as Holy Spirit seeks\nto take us in the paths of righteousness.  Because of where the Lord is\ntaking us and how He is (and will) leading us, we cannot draw\nback<\/span>, even the slightest, from His commands or the prompts of Holy\nSpirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, let\u2019s take a second (or third?) look at the events that unfold in the\nthird chapter of Genesis.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 2:9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that\nis pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst\nof the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 2:16-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the\ngarden thou mayest<\/span> freely eat:<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>But of the tree of the\nknowledge of good and evil, thou shalt<\/span> not eat of it:\nfor in the day that thou eatest<\/span> thereof thou shalt<\/span> surely die.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis the standard that God sets!  First of all, He creates trees which\nproduce fabulous looking fruit \u2014 fruit which is really<\/i><\/b> good\nto eat.  He doesn\u2019t give Adam and Eve a fistful of laws and\ncommandments.  He simply reserves one of the ten genus of trees to Himself\nand says, \u201cDon\u2019t touch!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nfollows that one simple command with a warning, and in that warning comes\nembodied the principles of<\/span> <\/span>agape<\/span><\/i><\/b>.  We can paraphrase it like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve created you to live and fellowship with me forever! \nI will impart to you every piece of knowledge and wisdom you will ever need,\nbut if you eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, all of that will\nbe stripped away from you and you will die!  Don\u2019t eat of that tree\nbecause there is death in it!  Your flesh was never designed to gain\nknowledge without revelation.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Does\nthat make it clear to you?  Good!  Now you can see the significance\nof David\u2019s use of the word,<\/span> <\/span>shub<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, to describe the need for our \u201creturn\nto the beginning.\u201d  Put another way<\/a> we can\nphrase this, \u201ca return to the time before Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the\nKnowledge of Good and Evil.\u201d  In other words, it spelled out a return to\nall that Adam and Eve were in Eden, and all that we were created to be<\/span> <\/span>In the Beginning<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nstop here and follow this in more detail next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
