ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 12<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

People have asked me over the years how I can share like this on\nthese families of fear and deliverance from fear.  The answer is quite\nsimple.  Growing up and seeing the Enemy do his best to take your life on\nsome 30 different occasions, going all the way back to when I was two years of\nage, tends to have an impact on you!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 Experiencing the deliverance of the Lord in the midst of\nit time after time after time \u2013 and even hearing the angel of the Lord speak\naudibly to you saying, \u201cNothing is going to happen to you\u201d \u2013 really brings a\nrevelation based in the Word and lived out in a practical dimension.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I honestly cannot think back to a time where I was afflicted\nwith the Fear of Evil, and that I credit to the fact of growing up with angels,\nhaving the Lord appear visibly to me at age seven, and then at age nine, and\nrepeating at age ten, experiencing my first two visits to Heaven.  There\nwas a love for the Lord instilled in the core of my being at an early age \u2013 a\nlove that banished all fear of Him and\/or any thought that I needed to behave\nin some way or engage in ritualistic traditions to please Him.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s a funny thing, though.  You\u2019d think that with all of\nthat in my background, there wouldn\u2019t be any room for the Fear of Man. \nNONE of these fears can enter into your life and cause you to compromise the\nWord unless you open the door to them.  That is exactly what happened to\nme with the enormous success of my businesses in the little and very remote<\/a> town of Barrow, Alaska.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let me continue where I left off last week.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Man always generates the need to please others.  The fear part of\nit is strictly subconscious but it still manipulates you to do whatever it\ntakes \u2014 even going to extravagant lengths \u2014 to please others and to be seen in\na good light by them.  It frequently results in something we all know as\n\u201cpassing the buck\u201d when something happens to put us in a bad light with our\npeers or those in charge to whom we answer.  We see this in operation in\nthe Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were caught in their fear.  Watch\nthis scene unfold in Genesis 3: 11-13.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd he said, Who told thee that thou wast<\/i><\/span> naked?\nHast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest<\/span> not eat?<\/span>   <\/sup><\/span>And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest<\/span> to\nbe<\/i> with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.<\/span>   <\/sup><\/span>And the\nLORD God said unto the woman, What is<\/i> this that<\/i> thou\nhast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First,\nwe see Adam pass the buck.  He can\u2019t take responsibility for his own\ndisobedience so he blames Eve.  More than that, he tries to put off some\nof the blame on God Himself!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see it? <\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The woman whom thou gavest<\/span> to\nbe<\/i> with me<\/span>.\u201d <\/span> <\/span>Riiiiiiigghhhhttt<\/span><\/span>!!!  If God\nhadn\u2019t given Adam Eve in the first place, none of this would have\nhappened!  Never mind the fact that Adam and Eve have functioned together\nin ruling over the earth for something on the order of a couple of thousand\nyears by this time.  And now Adam blames God while blaming Eve? \nTHAT, my friends, is the Fear of Man in full view!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nit doesn\u2019t stop.  Eve does exactly the same thing.  She can\u2019t blame\nAdam or pass the buck to him, but she can blame the serpent.  <\/span>\u201dAnd the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nwe see the Fear of Man doing here is to cause both Adam and Eve to avoid their\nown responsibility.  Think what would have happened if Adam had accepted\nresponsibility in the first place and said to the Lord, \u201cThis was my fault and\nmy disobedience.  Had I paid attention to what was happening and taken the\nauthority to cancel what Eve had done as her husband, we wouldn\u2019t be here\ntoday.\u201d  In fact, he had acted redemptively<\/span>, but\nhis decision was made in human reasoning \u2014 NOT according to the Word of the\nLord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee, don\u2019t you, what happens when we eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good\nand Evil?  We make decisions based on whether we see things in a \u201cgood\u201d\nlight or an \u201cevil\u201d perspective.  They are \u201csoul\u201d decisions made from a\ncontaminated soul, a soul contaminated with either the Fear of Death, the Fear\nof Man or the Fear of Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nfully understood the contamination of the soul.  He understood what an\nun-restored soul was capable of.  David realized that without the\nrestoration of our soul \u2014 the return of our soul to that where we were first\ncreated \u2014 we would be unable to walk with the Lord in the Paths of\nRighteousness and mature in our relationship with Him so that His Glory would\nbe seen in us.  He understood that the objective of our restoration would\nultimately bring us to the place where we could \u2014 and would \u2014 dwell in the\nHouse of the Lord forever!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas in the fall of 1982 that I was invited to speak at a Full Gospel\nBusinessmen\u2019s conference in Fairbanks. The Lord had been revealing to me the\nnature of the families of fear, and He had just shown me pictures of how the\nFear of Man operates.  I saw my own failure and the collapse of Arctic\nSlope Audio (as well as that of North Slope Communications \u2014 and that\u2019s another\nstory) as a product of submitting to and opening the door in my life to the\nFear of Man.  That experience had seared me internally.  It was a\nfresh, burning revelation I knew the body of Christ needed.  I shared my\nexperiences at this conference and in so doing, repented openly for my\ndisobedience to the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nwere pastors and business leaders present at that conference who immediately\nstood to their feet, repented publicly for their own yielding to the Fear of\nMan, and then gathered around me to minister deliverance from that fear.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\ndo you see the surgery that had to be performed in order to be set free and\nrestored?  The very fact that Jesus experienced these things Himself\nequipped Him to minister to us and to restore us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nhow Paul describes Jesus as he writes his letter to the Hebrews.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hebrews 2:10<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span> <\/span>For it became him, for whom are<\/i> all things, and\nby whom are<\/i> all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to\nmake the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nthere\u2019s this one:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hebrews 5:8-9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things\nwhich he suffered;<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal\nsalvation unto all them that obey him;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreek word used in both of these verses for \u201csuffering\u201d is the same:<\/span> <\/span>pathema<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  J. H. Thayer\nrenders it like this:<\/span> <\/span>that\nwhich one has suffered or is suffering as a result of misfortune, calamity or\nevil.<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nPaul says that Jesus learned obedience by the things that he went through, we\nsee the word,<\/span> <\/span>hupakoe<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, for\nobedience.  That word means:<\/span> <\/span>to\nlisten attentively, to submit and comply [with the instruction or command\ngiven.]<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/u><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Most\nChristians do not consider for a moment the idea that Jesus learned obedience\nto the Word or instruction of Father through His own mistakes or\nmissteps.  What they fail to realize is that Jesus was still a<\/span> <\/span>teknon<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>\u2014\none under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the Father (see\nGalatians 4:2) \u2014 until He was baptized in the Jordan River.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s\na hard concept for some folks to swallow, but between the age of 12 (when He\nconfounded the priests in the temple with His knowledge of the Word) and 30\nwhen He was baptized, Jesus was learning Father\u2019s ways of conducting business\nin a practical sense, and probably making a few missteps along the way. \nFather\u2019s Word was becoming Jesus\u2019 flesh.  In a very real way, He was\nlearning how to walk out that same Word he had confounded the priests, the\nscribes and Pharisees with at age 12.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\ndid not become<\/span> <\/span>huios<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>(one\nreleased with Father\u2019s full approval to conduct business in Father\u2019s name and\nauthority) until Father spoke from Heaven when Jesus came up out of the River\nJordan and said,<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>This is my Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus\nJohn could write (see John 1:14),<\/span> <\/span>\u201cAnd the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld\nhis glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and\ntruth.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

With\nFather\u2019s announcement, and the expression of Divine anointing that came upon\nHim in the form of the dove settling on his shoulder, Jesus<\/span> <\/span>now being made perfect (<\/span>teleios<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>\u2014 complete), he became the author of eternal salvation unto all\nthem that obey him. <\/span> <\/span>Jesus was now ready to author and\ncomplete our restoration through the things He was about to go through.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nJesus had learned as a<\/span> <\/span>teknon<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>prepared\nHim for that which was to come, once He became a<\/span> <\/span>huios<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  Without that\nperiod of preparation in His life, He would not have been prepared to\nexperience the unbelievable stripes which ripped His flesh apart and the\nsuffering of the Cross on our behalf.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nfew years ago, I shared the parallels between the seven nations that occupied\nCanaan and the seven letters that open up the book of Revelation.  Each of\nthe seven nations had driving master spirits that represented their character\nand nature.  What Israel was commanded to overcome and obliterate in\ndestroying these nations, they failed because of compromise.  They acted\nafter the flesh and did not succeed in their quest, ultimately resulting in the\nnation being carried away into captivity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis not my purpose or objective today to try and cover that ground again, but I\nwould like you to see a revelation in the third of the seven letters.  My\nobjective is to show you an area of restoration that we cannot escape from if\nwe are to become representatives of the Glory of the Lord, and \u2014 as David put\nit \u2014<\/span> <\/span>\u201cdwell\nin the House of the Lord forever.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nletter is written to the Ekklesia<\/span> in Pergamos<\/span>, and the central theme of God's dealings with them\nwas "The Fear of Man."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"\u2026. Thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam\n...... and ...... also, them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes<\/span>,\nwhich thing I hate."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Man?  O.K.  For starters, let's just take a look at Balaam.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Balak<\/span><\/span>, the king of Moab,\nsends his counselors and advisors to Balaam, asking Balaam to pronounce a curse\nupon Israel (see Numbers 22, 23, 24).  Of course, Balak<\/span>\nsends along "the rewards of divination" -- a nice metaphor for a heap\nof money, and other goodies -- as an enticement.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why? \nWhy would money be an enticement to anyone to pronounce a curse -- especially\nwhen the one being enticed is reasonably well off, and has at least two\nservants?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First,\nthe motivation behind the enticement:<\/span> <\/span>"Moab was sore afraid of the people...."<\/span>  Get it? \nIt's called "The Fear of Man."  Those who suffer from the Fear\nof Man seek to impress man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Secondly,\nthose who fear man believe that money brings status: hence, respect, power, and\neven fear, from other men.  Those who suffer from the Fear of Man also\nbelieve that all other men suffer from the Fear of Man. It is a subconscious,\ndriving force in their lives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Did\nBalaam suffer from the Fear of Man\u201d Look at his actions!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Twice,\nthe "honorable men" from Moab came to entice him.  The Lord has\nalready said, "No!<\/b>"  So they come the second time with an\noffer Balaam can't resist, "I will promote thee to very great\nhonor."  Not enough?  O.K.  How about this? <\/span> <\/span>"And I will do whatsoever thou sayest<\/span>\nunto me."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wow! \nHow's that for power and authority!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Did\nBalaam suffer from the Fear of Man?  Look at what he did.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First,\nhe says all the right words,<\/span> <\/span>"If Balak<\/span> would give me his house\nfull of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do\nless, or more."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Riiiight<\/span><\/b><\/span>!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Oh,\nwe must impress them with our righteousness, mustn't we?  We really have\nto let them know that this is "my God," and not "their\nGod."  We are very elite, and exclusive, aren't we?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sorry\nto leave you hanging in the middle of this but the picture of Balaam, as well\nas that of the Nicolaitanes<\/span>, is a revelation of just\nhow far the obstinacy of the Fear of Man will take people.  See you next\nweek.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
