ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 11<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We have a lot of ground to cover today, and I need to share with\nyou my own personal deliverance from one of these spirits of fear, so let\u2019s get\nright to it.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nleft off in our previous discussion on <\/span>\u201cHe restoreth<\/span>\nmy soul\u201d <\/span>talking\nabout deliverance from the Fear of Death \u2014 a spirit of fear that invaded the\nhuman frame with Adam\u2019s disobedience to the Lord in eating of the Tree of the\nKnowledge of Good and Evil.  As we have already noted, we were never\ndesigned to die when God first created us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nsee the evidence of this in the extremely long lives that men and women lived\nprior to the Flood \u2014 and even for a time thereafter.  The very fact\nthat death now existed opened the door for the Fear of Death to rule in the\nlives of men and women prior to Jesus taking the Curse upon Himself on the\nCross and canceling the death sentence for all who believed on Him and entered\ninto a love relationship with and in Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Death was not the only invader to contaminate and take up residence in\nmen and women, however.  There was another family of fear \u2014 and I\nrelate these spirits of fear to families because of all the other spirits that\ncohabitate with the master spirit of fear, be that the Fear of Death, the Fear\nof Man and\/or the Fear of Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, let me take you on a personal journey.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\n1978, living in Barrow, Alaska, I was able to strike an arrangement with the\nArctic Slope Regional Corporation to purchase a communications company from\nthem, then known as ASA Communications.  The regional corporation had\nalready hired me a year earlier to develop a consumer-based entertainment\nretail business as an adjunct to ASA Communications.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

After\na year of developing the business, the regional corporation underwent a change\nof management.  The new management decided that retail operations\nwere too far removed from their primary thrust and began to talk about\ndivesting itself, hence my offer to purchase the communications company as a\ncomplete business.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My\nfirst order of business was to create two separate business\nentities.  Retaining the \u201cASA\u201d moniker, Arctic Slope Audio became the\nretail entity and North Slope Communications became the communications business\ndealing with the need for two-way radio communications between the far-flung\ncommunities in a borough nearly the size of the state of California.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1979\nand 1980 were banner years for Arctic Slope Audio, bringing more than\n$2,000,000 in the sales of Sony Audio Lab products and television\nsets.  Sony Audio Lab was a division of Sony that specialized in very\nhigh-end consumer audio products.  You can understand what I mean\nwhen I say that we sold custom sound systems costing up to $60,000-plus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Arctic\nSlope Audio became a name in Alaska, with a customer base that reached into\nAlaska\u2019s major cities such as Anchorage and Fairbanks.  Our primary\ncustomers, however, were the men and women who were building and maintaining\nthe Alaska Oil Pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s\na lot of preface to where I\u2019m headed with this story.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nJanuary of 1980, I went to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Chicago where\nI was met by the president of Sony Corporation.  He wined and dined\nme and honored Arctic Slope Audio as being the largest Sony Audio Lab dealer in\nthe world.  With that honor came interviews with trade magazines and\n\u2014 most notably \u2014 Time Magazine.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou beginning to see where this is going?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nknow what?  I loved the honors.  I loved the praise of\nmen.  The personal and national \u2014 no, make that global \u2014 recognition\nwent to my head.  I was reveling in the fact that my name was being\nbandied about in consumer electronics circles as someone deserving of high\npraise and esteem for my accomplishments.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

THAT\u2019s\nwhere things went wrong!  You see, the enormous success of the\nbusiness was NOT so that I could get rich or have a lot of\nmoney.  What was getting lost in the translation was that God was\ndoing this!  My initial purpose in acquiring ASA Communications was\nso that we would have the necessary financial ability to expand the ministry of\nCBN and the 700 Club throughout the state \u2014 and especially the bush\ncommunities.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsuccess wasn\u2019t so much that I was selling a fistful of electronic equipment and\ngadgets; it was that a whole lot of funds were available to purchase the\nnecessary equipment to build tiny little TV stations in the villages so that\nthey would have access to Christian television.  And we were doing\njust that.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

God\nis very glad to allow His people to receive recognition and honors, so long as\nthey remain humble and honor Him as the source of their success.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nwas being faithful to the objective of building these little TV stations and\nusing the funds properly to accomplish that.  What went wrong was\nthat the public acclaim and recognition went to my head.  I\ndiscovered that I loved the praise of men.  I loved the honors and\nthe awards, and I loved it to the point of becoming insensitive to the voice of\nthe Lord when He began to direct me differently.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ndoor to the Fear of Man had been opened in my life, and that spirit had jumped\nin with both feet!  Now I was going out of my way to get the honors\nand the public recognition.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe fall of 1980 (we had already exceeded in sales what we had done in 1979 for\nthe same time period) I began to look forward to a record-setting holiday\nselling season.  I began contacting my vendors to see what new\nproducts were in store for the 1981 year and making decisions on what I would\nbring in for the Christmas season.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Standing\nin the store one day and looking over the product that lined the shelves, the\nLord spoke to me as clearly as He had ever spoken, \u201cClose the doors!\u201d With that\nword came the very clear sense that I was to have a \u201cGoing Out of Business\u201d\nsale and shut the whole thing down.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cNO!\u201d\nI argued.  That can\u2019t be God!  After all, look what we\u2019ve\naccomplished so far!  Look what we have in front of us as far as\ncommunities that still need to hear the Gospel via Christian\ntelevision.  These people need to be built up in their faith!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Man can get really religious!  That fear knows exactly how to\nargue and manipulate you so that you disobey the Word of the\nLord.  It causes you to reason with the same reasoning and logical\narguments that come from eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil.  In this case, this spirit was arguing the \u201cgood\u201d that would\nhappen if I didn\u2019t close the doors.  But it was a lie!  And\nthat was NOT what God was saying!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nas the serpent did with Eve, I was being enticed and tempted with what was\n\u201cgood\u201d and made sense.  In the same way that the serpent blinded Eve\nto the consequences to follow, I was being blinded by the Fear of Man to the\nconsequences that would follow if I listened to that logic.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Yup!  Listen\nto the human logic that follows when you start to rationalize what God is\nsaying to you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nwould close the doors alright \u2014 after the Christmas selling\nperiod.  OK, I reasoned, the Lord has some other provision for the\nvillages.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nproblem with this logic was that it came out from a piece of news that was sent\nto me from the president of Sony Corporation.  Following the CES show\nin January of 1981, Sony was planning to fly me to Japan and honor me\ncorporately as well as providing a fistful of other niceties that would go with\nit.  The Fear of Man had absolutely set the stage!  I\nwanted those honors!  I wanted that recognition!  I wanted\nthe esteem of man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\n\u201clisten\u201d to the Serpent is exactly what I did.  My first decision was\nto fly to Seattle and meet with a Sony distributor to place an order for\nequipment in anticipation of a banner selling holiday season.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nProverbs 16:18, we read the following:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pride goeth<\/span> before destruction, and a\nhaughty spirit before a fall.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nyou need to see this picture within the context of sharing on the Fear of\nMan.  Let me amplify this for you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[The deafness that results from] being lifted up in one\u2019s own\nself-grandeur brings the crashing down of one\u2019s dreams and accompanying vexation,\nand a self-exalting (man-pleasing) spirit precedes calamity and ruin<\/span>.  <\/span>(Proverbs 16:18, RAC\nTranslation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nnew product had scarcely arrived and put on display.  I set it all up\none night in a presentation that would make it desirable to my customers when\nthey entered the store, then locked up and went home.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Arriving\nat the store the next morning, I was stunned when I realized that the store had\nbeen broken into, ransacked, and most of the new equipment gone.  I\ncalled Dave Dobbs at the Department of Public Safety.  Dave was the\ndispatcher for the local police, but he was also my associate pastor at Inupiat\nChristian Center.  Dave sent a couple of officers over to\ninvestigate.  Most of the local police officers had been my customers\nduring the past couple of years and they were quite familiar with the kind of\nthings we were selling.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas only a matter of days before they found the culprit \u2014 and the stolen\nequipment.  All that high-end equipment had been stashed under a\nhouse in the snow.  Though they recovered it, the equipment was\nunsalable.  Video-tape machines and snow are\nincompatible.  So are $4,000 amplifiers and $1,000 cassette decks.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas a huge blow to my plans for a record-setting season, but I still had a fair\namount of product in storage, and I rebuilt my displays.  Not to\nworry!  The Enemy was far from through.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Between\nNovember and January, the store was broken into and robbed no less than six\ntimes.  So much for the expected honors from Sony\nCorporation!  Not only was I unable to attend the CES show, I was\nnearly bankrupt.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nJanuary, I put together what remained of the product for a \u201cGoing Out of\nBusiness\u201d sale in the hopes that I would bring in enough money to pay off the\n$50,000 debt owed to the Sony distributor.  Instead the owner of the\nbuilding I had leased for the retail store decided she needed the building back\nto move her restaurant into and canceled my lease, effective\nimmediately.  Now I had no place to operate from which to sell my\nremaining product.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK,\nI reasoned.  I will box everything up, put it into a cargo container\nand ship it to Fairbanks or Anchorage and sell it outright to another\ndealer.  No sooner had it been prepared for shipment when the\ncontainer and all of the product disappeared, never to be\nretrieved.  Now I WAS bankrupt!  There was no way to pay my\ncreditors and convincing them that I would come up with some other way to pay\noff the debt didn\u2019t even make it to first base.  There was no such\nthing as insurance for anything in the arctic, so the loss was complete.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Had\nI listened to the Word of the Lord when He spoke to me in October and said,\n\u201cClose the doors,\u201d things would have been radically different.  But I\nhad listened to a lying spirit \u2014 a spirit which had enticed me with the desire\nto be honored and recognized: one which was strictly \u201cman-pleasing.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nFear of Man always generates the need to please others.  The fear\npart of it is strictly subconscious but it still manipulates you to do whatever\nit takes \u2014 even going to extravagant lengths \u2014 to please others and to be seen\nin a good light by them.  It frequently results in something we all\nknow as \u201cpassing the buck\u201d when something happens to put us in a bad light with\nour peers or those in charge to whom we answer. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thought\nI could finish my story today, but it will make this Coffee Break too long, so\nlet me finish it for you next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
