ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 9<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

August\n 12, 2016<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Good Morning once again!  We\u2019ve spent a fair amount of time\ntalking about the purpose of the \u201cstill waters,\u201d the objective of Holy Spirit\nin pouring Himself into us, the release of our spirit and intellect so that we\nallow Him to flow through us \u2013 and especially our tongue!  I will keep\nsaying this over and over and over again throughout this series (and I\u2019ve said\nit before): we were created \u201c<\/span><\/b>in the image and likeness<\/span>\u201d of\nGod.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

With that creation comes the power of creative speech.  Our\ntongues have the ability to speak and declare life, health, wholeness and\nprosperity.  They also have the ability to speak and declare death,\nsickness, sorrow, disease and lack in our lives.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The unredeemed tongue can \u2013 and does -- speak doubt, fear and\nunbelief.  Without restoration and deliverance from the spirits of doubt,\nfear and unbelief, we wind up speaking the very things that stop us in our\nspiritual growth and the development of our walk in intimacy with the Lord\nJesus Christ.  Everything we learned as we ate and feasted in the green\npastures of the Word is going to be put to the test.  Without some\nspiritual surgery we will fail the tests again and again and again.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Our failures as we are tested will bring frustration and\ndespair, and many will stop totally in their growth in God.  Thus, we come\nto the timing in God\u2019s economy, following the work of Holy Spirit in and\nthrough us, where we are ready for some surgery.  You may laugh at my\nillustration but I believe that what we know as \u201cthe Baptism in the Holy\nSpirit\u201d anesthetizes for the surgery that must take place.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bear with me for a bit as I lay some foundations in explaining\nthis.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis going to seem like a bit of a departure from sharing from the 23rd Psalm, so\nbear with me.  We are dealing with David\u2019s prophecy,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cHe restoreth<\/span> my soul,\u201d<\/span> <\/span>but\nI want to take you back to the beginning so we can understand what David is\ndriving at here in this prophetic picture \u2014 and adventure \u2014 that takes us from\nbeing totally focused on ourselves, our needs, our disappointments, our despair\nand feeling like we\u2019ve been deserted by God to the place where He is revealing\nHis Glory in and through us.  The restoration that David is describing\nextends into every area of life \u2014 and most importantly, our thinking.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 2:15-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of\nEden to dress it and to keep it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the\ngarden thou mayest<\/span> freely eat:<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>But of the tree of the\nknowledge of good and evil, thou shalt<\/span> not eat of it:\nfor in the day that thou eatest<\/span> thereof thou shalt<\/span> surely die.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ve\nundoubtedly heard me share this before but consider Adam & Eve\u2019s first\nreactions when they ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 3:7-10<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew\nthat they were<\/i> naked<\/u>; and they sewed fig leaves\ntogether<\/u>, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD\nGod walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife\nhid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the\ngarden<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him,\nWhere art<\/i> thou?<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was\nafraid, because I was<\/i> naked; and I hid myself<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee the first reactions:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span> <\/span>The\nGlory of the Lord vanished from their physical beings and they suddenly saw\nthemselves as carnal human beings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span> <\/span>They\nfelt the need to cover themselves and made clothing to cover their private\nparts.  (This was the beginning of the Fear of Man.  They needed to\nmake sure that they appeared acceptable to one another.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span> <\/span>When\nthey heard the voice of God, the sudden realization of their disobedience to\nthe Lord caused fear to erupt in their beings.  (This was the beginning of\nthe Fear of Evil.  Partaking of a tree forbidden by God, and doing it at\nSatan\u2019s suggestion and enticement put them in his camp; and that resulted in a\nSatanically-induced terror of God, devoid of God\u2019s love.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nsee what happens next!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 3:11-13<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>And he said, Who told thee that thou wast<\/i><\/span> naked?\nHast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest<\/span> not eat?   And the man said, The woman\nwhom thou gavest<\/span> to be<\/i> with me, she\ngave me of the tree, and I did eat.<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is<\/i> this that<\/i> thou\nhast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see the expansion of the Fear of Man?  This is where the \u201cblame game\u201d\nor \u201cpassing the buck\u201d begins.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next,\nwe see the beginning of the Fear of Death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 3:17-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the\nvoice of thy wife (<\/span>instead of My voice<\/span>), and hast eaten of the\ntree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt<\/span>\nnot eat of it: cursed is<\/i> the ground for thy sake;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In sorrow shalt<\/span> thou eat of<\/i> it\nall the days of thy life;<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt<\/span> eat the herb of the field;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/sup><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In the sweat of thy face shalt<\/span> thou\neat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast<\/span>\nthou taken: for dust thou art<\/i>, and unto dust shalt<\/span>\nthou return<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nare so many facets of this that it would fill entire chapters of a book, so\nlet\u2019s see if we can simplify it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1) The ground itself\n(from which Adam was created) is now cursed.  Now Adam will have to work\nthe very ground that (1)<\/span> <\/span>used to produce at his voice. \nThat \u201cwork\u201d will be \u2018<\/span>itstsabon<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, worrisome, vexing, (sometimes causing\nanger) sweat and toil (with the knowledge that if the ground doesn\u2019t produce,\nyou don\u2019t eat, and therefore you die).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span> <\/span>The\nformerly compliant and favorable earth itself will fight against you and bring\nforth thorns, thistles, and everything it can to fight against your\nproductiveness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span> <\/span>You\nwill labor until the day you die (do you see now the promise of death?<\/i>),\nand that same dust you were created from and given life is the dust you will\nreturn to, becoming dust yourself.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus,\nthe Fear of Death brings sweat, toil, and the constant nagging that if you\ndon\u2019t produce, you die.  And here is where every major disease known to\nman is born!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nget back to the whole concept of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil.  This tree comes by its name by virtue of the fact that the\npartaking of it trades the revelation which comes by eating of the Tree of Life\nfor information \u2014 information which allows us to reason out for ourselves what\nis good and what is evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Everything\n\u2014 and I do mean EVERYTHING \u2014 that God has for us is based in revelation. \nIn revelation by the Spirit of God (we will talk about this more momentarily)\ncomes wisdom.  With that wisdom comes every piece of knowledge we have\nneed of, in and for every conceivable situation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou beginning to get a grasp of why David worded this step of adventure like\nthis:<\/span> <\/span>He restoreth<\/span> my soul<\/span>?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthis verse, Holy Spirit uses the word,<\/span> <\/span>nephesh<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>for soul<\/span>.  This word has\na broad spectrum of meanings and applications:<\/span> <\/span>the\nactivity of the mind, the seat of emotions and passions, the inner being of\nman, one\u2019s appetites, one\u2019s lusts, one\u2019s desires, one\u2019s mortality, the\nbreathing substance or being<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 Pretty\nspecific and very explanatory, don\u2019t you think?  When we submit ourselves\nto Holy Spirit to the restoration process, we are going to undergo a radical\nrevision of the way we think, what we desire, our emotions, our appetites, our\nlusts \u2014 and quite specifically, our mortality \u2014 our Fear of Death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nlast one is an issue that will be challenged continually.  There is the\ninnate knowledge in everyone of us that we were never designed for death in the\nfirst place.  Death was a key point in the curse that came with eating of\nthe Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nfact, deliverance from each of the three families of fear is central to our\nrestoration.  Fear \u2014 no matter what family that fear is rooted in \u2014 is\nrooted in the way we think.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nProverbs 23:7, we read the following: \u201c<\/span>For as (a man) thinketh<\/span> in his heart, so is he<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nour thoughts are predicated in the way that we\u2019ve been taught and educated (in\nthe world\u2019s way of thinking), everything we do and say will have its basis in\nthe Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hence\nthe need to bring our thoughts, our minds, our emotions, our feelings under the\ndiscipline of the Tree of Life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paul\nput it like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cFor though we live, deport and comport ourselves by that which\nwe see, hear, taste, smell and touch, we do not contend with, war after and\nexecute military strategies [against Satan] by that which we see and hear, know\nintellectually, or have opinions of:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For the weapons and instruments of our war and executed actions\n[against Satan] do not have their origins and [weak, impotent] operation in\nnatural flesh and human abilities, but they are skillful, potent and powerful \u2013\nlike dynamite \u2013 through God to the demolition and extinction of all fortified\nand guarded places of opinions in opposition,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bringing down violently and demolishing (to total extinction)\nall mental reasonings<\/span> and thought processes, and\nevery mental barrier or arrogant and self-elevated attitude that justifies\nitself in opposition to the knowledge of God; bringing into captivity and\nmaking a prisoner every perception of the intellect and every mental purpose or\ndetermination to the compliance and submission of Christ and His anointing [in\nthe same way that He complied with the will and desire of the Father].\u201d<\/span> <\/span>(II\nCorinthians 10:3-5, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nunderstand what Paul is saying, do you not?  The restorative ability we\nhave in walking with the Lord in the Paths of Righteousness allows us \u2014 through\nHoly Spirit \u2014 to demolish the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, its way\nof thinking, its way of operating and the consequences that come in our lives\nas a result.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paul\ngoes on to say in Verse 6:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd holding in readiness and preparedness the [spiritual]\nfitness to vindicate and punish all refusal to hear what the Spirit is saying\nwhen your attentive and obedient submission has been satisfied fully and\nexecuted.\u201d  <\/span> <\/span>(RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

THAT\nis the discipline that comes with the Tree of Life.  When our soul is\nrestored, we have the ability to shut down and exterminate thoughts and reasonings<\/span> within ourselves which oppose and exalt\nthemselves against that which Holy Spirit is saying and instructing.  We\nrecognize that certain thoughts and rationalizing are in opposition to the Word\nof the Lord in our lives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus, <\/span>He restoreth<\/span> my soul<\/span>, becomes a living,\npractical reality for us.  That restoration moves us from the death that\nresults from previously eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,\nto the life \u2014 the spiritual vitality, the breathing in and breathing out \u2014 that\ncomes from eating of the Tree of Life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nreturn to our earlier discussion on the families of fear.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Everything\nthat the natural, nonrestored<\/span> soul reacts to or\nresponds to is predicated in one of the families of fear.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme use a classic example \u2014 and we see this in millions of Christians who still\nhave not grasped the difference between eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of\nGood and Evil in this area \u2014 and reacting accordingly \u2014 and partaking of the\nTree of Life.  You\u2019ll recall that I\u2019ve shared in the past the fact that\nbotanists (and this is recorded in a book published by the Sierra Club) have done\ngenetic studies of the trees and plant life in general \u2014 that they have reduced\nthe 50,000 species of trees in the world to their beginnings in ten fundamental\ngenus of trees.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nmay not mean much unless you realize that there were ten genus of trees in the\nGarden of Eden \u2014 one of which was the Tree of Life, and one of which was the\nTree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  How was it that the Lord referred\nto these trees in the Garden when He spoke to Adam?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 2:16-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the\ngarden thou mayest<\/span> freely eat:<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>But of the tree of the\nknowledge of good and evil, thou shalt<\/span> not eat of it:\nfor in the day that thou eatest<\/span> thereof thou shalt<\/span> surely die.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\ntree \u2014 one of ten genus of trees \u2014 was reserved unto the Lord.  The\nessence of His command to Adam and Eve was, \u201cYou can eat of any of the other\ngenus of trees (including the Tree of Life), but I\u2019ve reserved One unto\nMyself.  You can have nine of the tree species, but the tenth is mine. \nDo NOT eat of that tree!  If you do, it will change your entire being from\nthat which I\u2019ve made you to be, and death will result.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nbarely scratched the surface so far, so let\u2019s stop here and continue next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
