ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 6<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When David wrote and sang what we know as Psalm 119, the green\npastures had become a reality to him in a way that we all need.  Consider\nthe following from the second song (Beth) in this Psalm:<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 119:9-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking\nheed thereto<\/i> according to thy word<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not\nwander from thy commandments<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against\nthee<\/span><\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Blessed art<\/i> thou, O LORD: teach me thy\nstatutes<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies<\/span><\/u>, as much as<\/i> in all riches.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I will meditate in thy precepts<\/span><\/u>, and have respect unto thy ways.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy\nword<\/span><\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis just one tiny fraction of the number of times David focuses on the Word,\nloving the Word, meditating on the Word, declaring the Word, thinking the Word\n-- you get the idea!  Notice also that David makes the Word his\ndeclarations as well.  He speaks the Word in agreement with what the Lord\nis saying, and the change comes into his life by that creative\nconfession.  We'll come back to the 119th Psalm a bit later.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nunderstood the essential nature of being compelled -- by virtue of time and\ncircumstances, and the things he learned in God -- to feed on God's Word. \nThat, my friends, is exactly what it means to<\/span> <\/span>"lie down in green pastures."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Those\npastures aren't green just because it is a nice color and easy on the\neyes.  The pastures of God's Word are filled with the spiritual health and\nnutrition we need to live and operate, overcome and become victorious in this\nworld.  The Hebrew word translated "green" is the word,<\/span> <\/span>deshe'<\/span><\/i><\/b>.  This is a\nword that literally means "fresh sprout."  Get it?  The\n"green pastures" are a fresh Word from the Lord.  The Word is\nnew, it is fresh every time you read it and every time you hear it.  The\ncatch is that we have to feed on it.  We don't just pass over it and\/or\nread it routinely.  We allow it to become living, current, fresh, alive in\nour beings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nare a couple of words that David uses that are essential to our understanding\nof what is taking place in this phase of the Psalm 23 adventure.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Go\nback to Psalm 1:2: <\/span> <\/span>\u201dBut\nhis delight is in the Law<\/u> of the Lord, and in His Law<\/u> doth\nhe meditate day and night."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nthere\u2019s this word: <\/span> <\/span>"He maketh<\/u> me\nto lie down in green pastures."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee those two words, don\u2019t you?  \u201cLaw\u201d and \u201cmaketh.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Neither\nof those words are exciting in today\u2019s culture \u2014 and they weren\u2019t particularly\nloved in David\u2019s day and age.  Both words imply \u201cforce.\u201d  Human\nnature just hates and rebels against being forced to do anything.  But this\nis an essential step in our transformation from eating of The Tree of the\nKnowledge of Good and Evil to living entirely from The Tree of Life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nthe apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, he expressed it like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II\nTimothy 2:4-5: <\/span> <\/span>No man\nthat warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this<\/i> life;\nthat he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.<\/span>  <\/sup><\/span>And if a man also strive\nfor masteries, yet<\/i> is he not crowned, except he strive\nlawfully.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nhave the Law given to us for the purpose of setting guidelines for our daily\nliving and interaction in society. The Law is not a set of suggestions. \nIt is a set of requirements, and those requirements \u2014 when met \u2014 allow us to\nfunction peaceably in society.  More than that, those guidelines are the\noutlines for transformation!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

God\nis also NOT giving us a set of suggestions!  If we are to be transformed\nback into the image God first created us in and for, there are mandatory\nchanges and a discipline that MUST take place in the way we live, the way we\nrelate to the Lord, and the way we relate to one another.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nPaul wrote that second letter to Timothy, he was warring in his spirit against\nthe culture and societies of the day.  But Paul also said this to him:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Timothy 3:15-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span> <\/span>And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which\nare able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ\nJesus. All scripture is<\/i> given by inspiration of God, and is<\/i> profitable\nfor doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:\nThat the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou seeing the picture?  Paul is writing to a young man who, like David,\nhad immersed himself in the Word from the time he was a child.  Timothy\nhad become wise in the ways of God and wise in the Word even before he\ntransitioned from<\/span> <\/span>paideon<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>teknon<\/span><\/i><\/b>.  He had yet to\nbecome recognized by society as <\/span>huios<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\nand yet the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord was so established in him that he\nhad been appointed as an overseer of the Ekklesia in Ephesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hence,\nPaul instructed him to,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cLet no\nman despise thy youth.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>(See I Timothy 4:12)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme digress momentarily to say that this was my upbringing as well.  You\u2019ve\nall heard me share my experiences with angels beginning at age four, and the\nfact that my mother taught me to read at that age by reading the Bible.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nthe age of nine, when I first went to Heaven, the Word was ingrained in\nme.  I had developed a thirst for it that wouldn\u2019t quit!  When I\nawoke in the morning, my first act was to grab my Bible and read.  When I\nwent to bed at night, the Bible was laid on my pillow in front of me and I propped\nup on my elbows to read until I got sleepy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nWord became my constant companion.  To add to its emphasis, my mother\nbegan to drill me in memorizing locations in the Word.  At age six, my\nfather began the process of teaching scripture memorization, and my mother would\nadd to it each day by pulling scripture verses out of the air and asking me\nwhere they were located \u2014 and sometimes what the Lord was saying through those\nverses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nbrings me to something I need to address.  I want to take a minute to\nfocus on something that has become a real issue in parts of the body of Christ,\nand that is the disdain for the Old Testament.  There is a doctrine or\nteaching out among the body of Christ that teaches that the Old Testament does\nnot apply to us today. This deception is gathering some momentum and needs to\nbe addressed.  Much, if not most, of this false teaching arose out of\nanother deception, that of the Hyper Grace movement. This teaching is so false\nand destructive that it could easily be classified as heresy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nthe Apostle Paul wrote that<\/span> <\/span>\u201call Scripture<\/u> is given by inspiration of God and is\nprofitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction in righteousness\u201d<\/span> Timothy, at the\ntime, only had the Old Testament to read as the New Testament would not be\nwritten and circulated for around another 50 years.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Paul\nwas saying that all scripture - not just the New Testament - but also the Old\nTestament scripture is profitable to us to us for sound doctrine and\ninstruction in righteousness Paul went on\nto say that the Old Testament is important to us in order for us to be\ncomplete, properly and thoroughly equipped.<\/span>\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis a doctrine or teaching out among the body of Christ that teaches that the\nOld Testament does not apply to us today for the service of the Lord. It is\nimportant to understand when Paul wrote this there was NO New Testament. The\nearly "Church" did not have the New Testament The early\n"Church" was the most powerful example of what true Christianity\nshould look like.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas said that this "church" turned the world upside down.  [My\napologies for putting the word, "church," in quotes, but there is a reason\nfor this.  Everything we know today as "church" is the exact\nopposite of what Jesus taught and ministered.  He wasn't into big\norganizations with folks sitting weekly behind the four walls of a\nbuilding.  The word used in the Greek text of the N.T. is Ekklesia -- and\nthis is the word created as a parallel to the Hebrew  ya'ad<\/span><\/b>, or  mowadah<\/span><\/b>.  The picture in the Hebrew\nliterally represents: "the calling together of the betrothed by the\nBridegroom."  That "calling together" is for the purpose of\nbeing prepared for the Bridegroom (the Lord Jesus Christ) as His counterpart\nand His "other self."  That's a far cry from what we know today\nas "church."  That's a discussion we will save for a later time<\/i>.]<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Acts 17:5-6<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span><\/b>\u201c<\/span><\/b>But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them\ncertain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the\ncity on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them\nout to the people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain\nbrethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world\nupside down are come hither also.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\ndid this without having a New Testament. For one to say that the Old Testament\nhas no relevance to us today is absurd, and this kind of incompetent\nfoolishness could only come from a planned deception of the devil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nlook at the facts.  The Gospel of Matthew has over fifty quotes from the\nOld Testament and was written sometime after 60 AD, give or take a few years.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGospel of Mark was written after 60 AD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGospel of Luke was written around 58 AD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGospel of John was written sometime after 60 AD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nApostle Paul was martyred around 64 AD and his epistles were written around 58\n- 63 AD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nBook of Revelation was written around 96 AD after the fall of Jerusalem. \nPaul's Epistles along with the Gospels were not circulated and generally made\navailable until 90 AD.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nwhole of the cannon of scripture was not brought together and compiled until\n170 AD The first \u201ccanon\u201d was the Moratorium Canon, compiled in A.D. 170, which\nincluded all of the New Testament books except Hebrews, James, and 3 John. The\nCouncil of Laodicea (A.D. 363) concluded that only the Old Testament (along\nwith the Apocrypha) and the 27 books of the New Testament were to be read in\nthe churches.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nCouncils of Hippo (A.D. 393) and Carthage (A.D. 397) reaffirmed the same 27\nbooks as authoritative. The first generation of the early church did not have a\nNew Testament.  This may came as a surprise to some but history validates\nthis.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\na vibrant Christian church they only had access to the Old Testament. They had\nnever heard of or had access to the Book of Revelation. Their understanding of\nthe end times came from the Old Testament.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

To\nsay that the Old Testament has no relevance and instruction for us today would\nbe not only contrary to the scriptures but comes from a plot hatched in hell.\nWe cannot adequately understand the New Testament until we understand the Old\nTestament. The second is built upon the first.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nknow that I\u2019ve kind of stretched this out and taken a bit of a rabbit trail\nhere but there\u2019s a point to all of this.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nwe are to \u201cfeed in the pasture\u201d that our Lord and Shepherd sets before us, we\ndon\u2019t get to decide what we will eat and what we will throw away.  Just\nbecause we think that the Old Testament is not relevant to what Holy Spirit is\ndoing and saying today doesn\u2019t make it so.  We don\u2019t have the right to set\nit aside in favor of the New Testament.  The declaration of Psalm 23:2a\nis,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cHe maketh\nme to lie down<\/u> in green pastures.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s\nNOT a suggestion!  David knew exactly what he was saying.  He had\nbeen immersed in the Torah his whole life.  Those books of the Law were\nthe ONLY books available in his day, and he revered it \u2014 NOT treating it as the\nMosaic Law, but as the Law of God!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou understand where I'm coming from?  I'm not out to disparage those who\nhave a preference for the New Testament.  There are times when Holy Spirit\nwants us to focus on certain things that are recorded in the New\nTestament.  He does this in order to establish certain truths and\nprinciples in us.  What we MUST have, however, is a balance, and that\nbalance comes from reading the WHOLE Word!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nweek we will begin with the 119th Psalm to show you just how much David revered\nthe Law of God, how he reverenced the Word above all things and made it\nintegral to his life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
