ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 2<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We began this series last week by noting that this is nothing\nless than a prophecy \u2013 a decree over our lives.  It begins with a\ncreative declaration which comes from our mouths.  You\u2019ll recall that\nwe were created in the image and likeness of the Lord in the very\nbeginning.   With that creation came the inborn ability to\ndeclare and decree the events of our lives.  You will hear me say\nthis again and again throughout this series: each of the 15 separate statements\nin the 23rd<\/sup> Psalm are systematic decrees in and over our lives\nthat move us along in God\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nLaw -- again -- is (1) <\/span><\/b>that we\nconfess with our mouths<\/u> (that is, we actually verbalize and speak\nforth, declaring) that Jesus Christ is (our) Lord, and (2) <\/span><\/b>that we believe in the very\ncore of our beings<\/u> that God has raised Him from the dead (thus\nenacting the covenant of life on our behalf), then<\/b> we receive\nsalvation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nwhat is it that we are "saved from?"  Let\u2019s see what we can do\nwith the definition of "saved."  This word expands well\nbeyond its modern usage today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nhave three words in the Greek text of the New Testament translated "save,\nsavior, and salvation."  Those words are: <\/span>soter<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, soteria<\/i><\/span>,<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>and<\/span> soterion<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/b>  <\/span><\/b>All of them derive\nfrom the root word, <\/span>sozo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

J.\nH. Thayer, in his Greek-English Lexicon defines (in a somewhat lengthy\ndiscussion) the word, <\/span>sozo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span><\/i><\/b> like this (and\nI will enumerate):<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b> to\nsave;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to keep safe and sound;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to preserve from injury and peril;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(4)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to make well;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(5)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to heal;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(6)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to restore to health;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(7)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to deliver (from the penalties of\njudgment);<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(8)<\/span><\/b> to deliver from evil;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(9)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to make one a partaker of blessing\n(thus delivering from a curse);<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(10)<\/span><\/b> <\/span>to make to prosper in every way (thus\ncanceling poverty).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthat's just a small picture of that word, <\/span>sozo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>in the Greek. The\nword, <\/span>soter<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>is the word we use\nfor Savior.  <\/i><\/b><\/span>Soterion<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, <\/span><\/i><\/b>means<\/span><\/b>., <\/span>\u201cto save, to deliver,\nto make whole.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nyou understand what Jesus came to do, and what He accomplished on the\nCross!  The problem with many modern-day Christians is that\n"salvation" and "Savior" are pretty much limited to\n"saved" from going to Hell, and maybe "delivered from\nevil."  I want to expand on this concept of making Jesus Christ\n"Lord" and "Shepherd."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nbegan by saying that the 23rd Psalm is a declaration.  These are words\nthat actually came from David's mouth.  He was stating emphatically that\nthe Lord WAS his Shepherd -- not only the One who was in command of His life\nand breath, but the One who led and guided his every step, his decisions, his\nchoices.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We'll\ncome to the second of these 15 steps, "I shall not want," shortly but\nlet's first finish the foundation.  The Lordship of Jesus Christ IS the\nfoundation.  His leadership and guidance in our lives IS the foundation!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis unfortunate that religions have been made out of Christianity.  It was\nnever intended to be a religion, and true Christianity is about as far from\nreligion as you can get.  What lowers Christianity to a religion is the\nremoval of relationship with Jesus Christ as the determining factor in our\ndaily lives, His specific leadership and guidance by and through the Holy\nSpirit, and our answerability to the Covenant established through Jesus Christ\nby the Father.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis a Covenant-relationship.  The world today knows little of the concept\nof Covenant as it was known in David's day.  David was a recipient of the Abrahamic<\/span> Covenant.  That was not a covenant made by\nman, but by the Lord God.  It was a covenant which guaranteed God's\nperformance on Abraham's behalf; and that covenant contained promises that\nDavid took hold of.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Every\ncovenant has a foundation in and with the words that come out of our\nmouth.  Every covenant begins with a declaration.  Every\ncovenant begins with a place of agreement.  We enact the Covenant of\nLordship in our lives by agreeing with the fact that Jesus Christ IS not just\nour Shepherd; He is our governor, He is our protector, and He is our total\nsource of provision.  But He is more!  He is our friend,\nour companion, and He IS OUR LORD!!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Everything \u2014 and I do mean EVERYTHING \u2014 about the transition\nfrom despair to victory, and the King of Glory being revealed is a declaration\n\u2014 a confession from our mouths that agrees (the Greek word is <\/span>homologeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>: to\nsay the same thing as) with what the Word Himself has said, and IS saying NOW!!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The second of these 15 steps is no less a declaration and an\nagreement with what the Lord Jesus Christ has said, and IS saying to us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before we get too far into this, consider what Paul wrote in his\nletter to the Philippians:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless, MY GOD AND FATHER shall and will \u2014 without fail \u2014\ncram to the maximum as He furnishes you, satisfies you, fulfills to completion,\nbrings every situation to its successful conclusion, meeting every conceivable\nneed, requirement, occasion or demand, down from, out of, and in direct\nproportion to His fullness, His wealth, His abundance, His ability and His\nrichness in a display of His Glory by and through the anointing of the Anointed\nOne, Christ Jesus!<\/span>  <\/span>(Philippians 4:19,\nRAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

How\u2019s\nthat for a graphic picture and demonstration of David\u2019s confession and\ndeclaration, <\/span>I shall not want<\/span>?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nfor a moment the promises the Lord made to Abraham -- promises that God could\nnot<\/b> and would not<\/b> renege on:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 12:2-3<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless\nthee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt<\/span> be a\nblessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth<\/span> thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth\nbe blessed."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 13:14-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated\nfrom him, Lift up now thine<\/span> eyes, and look from the\nplace where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For\nall the land which thou seest<\/span>, to thee will I give\nit, and to thy seed for ever.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201dAnd I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a\nman can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be\nnumbered.  Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the\nbreadth of it; for I will give it unto thee."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 14:19-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most\nhigh God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God,\nwhich hath delivered thine<\/span> enemies into thy\nhand."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 15:1b<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great\nreward."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

5. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 15:5<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward\nheaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto\nhim, So shall thy seed be."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

6. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 15:13-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a\nland that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four\nhundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and\nafterward shall they come out with great substance."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

7. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 17:1-9<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou\nperfect.  And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will\nmultiply thee exceedingly.  And Abram fell on his face: and God talked\nwith him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt<\/span> be a father of many nations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cNeither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name\nshall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.  And I\nwill make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings\nshall come out of thee.  And I will establish my covenant between me and\nthee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant,\nto be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land\nwherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting\npossession; and I will be their God.  And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt<\/span> keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after\nthee in their generations."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

8. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 17:15-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai<\/span>\nthy wife, thou shalt<\/span> not call her name Sarai<\/span>, but Sarah shall her name be.  And I will bless\nher, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a\nmother of nations; kings of people shall be of her."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

9. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 17:21<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"My covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall\nbear unto thee at this set time in the next year."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

10. <\/span><\/b>Genesis 22:16-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>"And said, By myself have I sworn, saith<\/span>\nthe LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son,\nthine<\/span> only son:  That in blessing I will bless\nthee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven,\nand as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the\ngate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be\nblessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You understand, of course, that this was a covenant that the\nLord made with Abraham because he believed God<\/b> and took him at\nHis Word.  Note, also, that this covenant was <\/span>"between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their\ngenerations for an everlasting covenant."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas a covenant made in blood.  This covenant extended, therefore, to David\nsince he was of Abraham's seed.  David believed the promises of God. \nHis belief and trust and faith in God and His Word must necessarily have\npreceded his statement, <\/span>"The Lord is my\nShepherd."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\ndid not matter what God said, David believed it!  Absolutely. \nUnequivocally.  He breathed God's Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Therein\nlies the key to understanding all that becomes available to us when Jesus\nChrist becomes Lord and Shepherd of our lives.  The apostle Paul put it\nlike this,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Corinthians 1:20: <\/span><\/u><\/b>"For all the promises of God in Him (Christ Jesus) are yea,\nand in Him Amen, unto the Glory of God by us."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\norder for Jesus to become Lord and Shepherd of our lives, we must of necessity\nbelieve everything He says to us -- first in His Word, and secondly by His\nSpirit.   Furthermore, everything He says to us in and by His\nSpirit will be confirmed and confirmable by the Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nput it like this in Matthew 18:16, and Paul confirmed it in II Corinthians 13:1,<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"In the mouth of two\nor three witnesses shall every word be established."<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis where the transition between the past and the future, and true spiritual\ngrowth begins:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1) <\/span><\/b>We\nbelieve God absolutely and implicitly;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2) <\/span><\/b>We\ntrust Him and His leadership and guidance in our lives -- no matter how logical\nor illogical it may seem;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3) <\/span><\/b>We\nconfess Him before men, and<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(4) <\/span><\/b>We\nconfess His Word in every situation and every matter that occurs in our\nlife.  And, as you will see, the entire 23rd Psalm is a confession and a\ndeclaration of the provision of God for literally every area of life,\nspiritual, physical, emotional, financial, and in personal relationships.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re\njust scratching the surface so far with this, so let me continue this\ndiscussion next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
