It has always been a marvel to me how Holy Spirit downloads\nfresh and unfolding revelation from the Word.  I'm celebrating 70\nyears of experiences with the Lord as of this year, and I never cease to be\namazed at how much I've come to learn and how little I really\nknow.  You've probably heard this clich\u00e9 before, but the more I learn\nfrom Holy Spirit, the more I realize how little I really know of the vast\nrevelation that yet awaits.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Della and I were at a conference a few years ago -- the\nSouthwest Believers' Convention with Kenneth Copeland.  Kenneth made\na remarkable statement that I've not forgotten.  He commented on the\nfact that our society has come to make 70 years the expected lifespan when in\nfact God promised 120 years. <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Genesis 6:3 reads: <\/span><\/b>And the LORD said, My\nspirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is<\/i> flesh:\nyet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

We tend to marvel at those rarities we see with folks who are\n103 or even 110 and comment on how amazing it is that they have lived so\nlong.  Kenneth went on to say that one of the problems with our society\ntoday is that because of the expected life span of 70 years and the fact that\nfolks look toward retirement at 65 or 70, (and sometimes a whole lot earlier)\nthe younger generations are robbed of the wisdom that comes with increasing\nage.  The body of Christ is no different!  I've learned\nmore from the Lord in the past four years than I have in the previous\n70.  Layer after layer after layer of the Word is being peeled away\nas I'm seeing more and more of what the Lord has for His people.  Just\nthink of what the Lord will reveal over the next 50 years!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Not\nsure how I got started there, but let's get back to our adventures and those\nmarvelous things that God did with my folks, Alvin and Lorraine\nCapener.  I'll get back to the fox trapping experiences and the\ndevelopment of the Christian Broadcasting Network in Alaska a bit later, but\nlet me move along for today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I've\ngot a couple more photos to share, and these bear directly on the events I'd\nlike to cover today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I'm\n sure I've already mentioned it, but because of the rather unusual -- and at\n times spectacular -- nature of the accomplishments people saw Dad and Mom\n perform as a direct result of their ministry, the news media often covered\n them.  (You'll remember the A.P. coverage of Dad's astounding fishing\n season.)  Dad's Ham radio work and efforts to provide communications\n for the Saint Paul Island residents during the period prior to any kind of telephone\n service with the outside world got him written up in Ham radio and\n communications magazines on at least two or more occasions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Dad's\nrather innovative method of building a wall within a wall to prevent frost\ntransfer in extreme cold became the subject of builders and contractors all\nover the country.  Mom's efforts to bring non-native plant life to Saint\nPaul Island, and her successes in creating a gorgeous flower garden around the\nchurch gained attention literally around the world among gardening experts and\nflorists.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Newspaper\narticles and magazine stories had been (and were continuing to be) written\nabout Alvin and Lorraine Capener, and both Anchorage newspapers (the Times and\nthe Daily News) had done pieces on their ministry throughout the years. \nIn the years to come (that's for another Coffee Break) the Daily News would\npick up a story on Mom, the outcome of which would or could impact thousands of\nAlaskans and have legal ramifications for Alaska's future.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I've\nalready noted that Saint Paul Island was home to more than 200 species of\nbirds.  The island was a kind of heaven for birdwatchers, ornithologists\nand wild life photographers who didn't mind paying the round-trip airfare from\nAnchorage of around $1100.  (At the time, we could fly round trip from\nAnchorage to London for less than half that amount.)  That meant that a\npretty large percentage of the tourist traffic on the island was a fairly\nwell-heeled bunch financially.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Although\nthe home Dad had built certainly couldn't be called "luxurious," it\nwas far and away the nicest home on the island -- and easily the most\ncomfortable.  On one of our trips to the island, Della and I had helped\nDad and Mom remodel the interior (the exterior was nothing to write home\nabout), and replace some of the older furnishings with some pretty nice stuff.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Mom\nhad gone to great lengths to decorate various rooms, and each room had its own\ntheme.  Dad had become an extremely skilled cabinetmaker throughout the\nyears of building churches, and his handiwork was on display in virtually every\nroom.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

He\nhad taken a couple of Philippine mahogany doors, separated them with sections\nof bamboo that had drifted up on the beaches and created a rather large and\nbook-accommodating coffee table.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

To\nmatch it, he had taken a wine keg from an old ship which had broken apart on a\nrocky reef at one end of the island, cut it in half and wrapped each half with\nbamboo strips, using the ends of the keg on bamboo standoffs to make two\nmatching end tables.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I've\nsaid all that to say that the house became a draw to tourists all by\nitself.  The Capener home, with a couple of spare bedrooms, was -- more\noften than not -- a bed and breakfast for tourists, some of whom were\ndignitaries from foreign governments, historians, famous authors including the\nlikes of James Michener (he was working on his novel, Alaska, at the time),\nworld-renowned photographers, television media and entertainment moguls,\nscientists, and even folks like explorer and oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. \n(Della and I happened to be at Saint Paul Island when Cousteau sailed his\nfamous ship, Calypso, into Saint Paul's harbor.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Year\nafter year after year after year, the famous and the unknown, the powerful and\nthe "commoner," the great and the not-so-great made their visits and\npilgrimages to Saint Paul Island.  The growing fleet of motorcycles,\nmini-bikes, three- and four-wheelers became THE <\/i>mode of\ntransportation for all these people.  Dad and Mom built a\nhighly-profitable business out of renting these off-road vehicles despite the\nfact that they charged a pittance in rental fees.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I\ntalked to Dad about his rental rates one day, and his answer was, "Son,\nI'm not trying to get rich off these people.  I just want to cover my\ncosts, and use these bikes as a vehicle (pun intended) to share the\nGospel."  And share he did.  It is highly doubtful that Dad or\nMom ever kept any record of the number of visitors to the island who came to\nknow Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nvisitors, the tourists and the dignitaries who visited the island were not\ntheir primary objective, however.  The Holy Spirit had made it clear that\nthe spiritual atmosphere of the island was that of a cesspool, a garbage\ndisposal to be more exact, and that Alvin and Lorraine Capener were there to sow\nthe seeds of change.  The half-dozen young boys on mini-bikes in the photo\nbelow (also taken by Barbara Krizman) were among those who received almost\ndaily ministry.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Mom\nhad developed a practice of sharing Scripture verses.  She had purchased\nseveral "Precious Promise" boxes containing Scripture verses on tiny\nlittle cards.  When someone would come in to rent a bike -- especially if\nit were one of the young people of the island, she would have them take out a\ncard and read the Scripture verse; and then pray very quickly with them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

A\nbond developed between her and many of the young people.  Some of them\ndared to come to church on Sundays, and Mom would teach them using flannel\ngraph stories from the Bible (that was wayyy<\/i><\/b> before the\ncomputer graphics we have today!).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Her\nflair for teaching the Bible using these illustrations was unsurpassed. \nIn the 74-plus years I've been around, I've never met anyone else who could\nteach like she did!  It paid dividends everywhere she and Dad ministered\n-- and the dividends were in the lives of the young people with whom she shared\nthe Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Saint\nPaul Island had its equivalent to Paul Patkotak in the arctic.  I've\nshared with you the story of Paul Patkotak -- the Eskimo from Wainwright,\nAlaska -- who prayed for 40 years for the salvation and deliverance of the\nEskimo people scattered across the arctic.  In that story, I shared how we\nlearned that when Paul began to intercede for his people, and for all those\nfolks he'd attempted to share the Gospel with, it was the exact timing of God's\naudible call to my father in that old Methodist camp meeting when the Lord said\nto him, "I want you to go to Alaska for me."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise\nwhen we came to Barrow, the church was built, and the Holy Spirit began to be\npoured out just as Paul had prayed, he heard what was happening and -- at 65\nyears of age (or thereabouts) -- mushed his dogs the 90 miles from Wainwright\nto Barrow to see for himself what God was doing.  He had literally climbed\nover people and waded through the crowd to the front of the church to throw his\narms around Dad and weep at the visible answer to that which he had interceded\nall those years.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Saint\nPaul Island had its Paul Patkotak, too.  His name was John\nMerculief.  Raised in the Russian Orthodox traditions of the islands, he\nhad left Saint Paul in his twenties and worked several jobs in the\nnorthwest.  While in Seattle, he had walked into a Pentecostal church\nwhere he heard the Gospel preached for the first time in his life.  The\nreality of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ hit home when he bowed his\nknees and invited Jesus Christ to become Lord and Savior of his life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

He\nstayed in the northwest long enough to become well grounded in the Word and to\nexperience the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  However, there was an\nincreasing burning desire within his being to return to the islands and share\nwith his family the truths of the Word he knew they had missed hearing in the\nRussian Orthodox church.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Upon\nhis return to Saint Paul Island, the first person he went to talk to was the\nOrthodox priest.  The priest had no use for John's sharing of the life of\nChrist that was in him, however, and immediately branded him a heretic in the\ncommunity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

John\nwasn't about to be deterred.  He shared with various family members, and\nanyone else in the community that would give him five minutes.  He\ntraveled across the water the 42 miles to Saint George Island where he shared\nwith other relatives and friends.  Some of those family members recognized\nthe truth of what John was sharing and invited Jesus Christ to become their\nLord as well.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Persecution\nand opposition mounted within the communities, however, among people who could\nnot see the difference between "religion" and a personal relationship\nwith Jesus Christ, and considered that John had "departed from the\nfaith."  In fact, John had departed from religion TO faith!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I'd\nlike to finish John's story here, but in interests of keeping today's Coffee\nBreak from becoming an epistle, let' stop here and pick it up again next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
