understand that the terms, \u201capostle\u201d or \u201cprophet,\u201d were neglected and even\nfrowned upon when referring to certain leaders who were particularly anointed\nby the Lord to accomplish things and lay foundations in areas where there were\nnone.<\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#385623'>Growing up with parents whose lives manifested everything the\nWord describes as \u201capostolic,\u201d the <span class=SpellE>cessationist<\/span>\ndoctrines that have permeated the body of Christ since the fourth century were\nbaffling to me.&nbsp; Dad would have cringed if someone had referred to him as\nan apostle (the term, \u201cmissionary\u201d was the only thing he could refer to or\nrelate to as his calling) and yet he was the epitome of an apostle.&nbsp; He\nlaid foundations where no one else had gone.&nbsp; Though things have changed\nin the years since, the denomination Dad was with could not comprehend the\nrealm of the apostolic, and twice thought they could enforce mandates on him\nthat would have violated everything God was instructing him to do.<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#385623'>His travels and ministry throughout the arctic, laying\nfoundations in the lives of a people who knew little of the Lord Jesus Christ\n(other than religious tradition which blinded them to the truth) and even less\nof Holy Spirit became a pattern for the generations of ministers who have\nfollowed.&nbsp; Many would-be \u201cmissionaries\u201d or pastors who thought they could\nstep into the ministries he established soon discovered otherwise, and a few\neven abandoned the communities where the denomination had sent them.&nbsp;\nTheir Bible College training did little to prepare them for the reality of\nbuilding on the foundations that Dad had laid, along with some of the others\nwho followed in his foundational footsteps, like Arvin <span class=SpellE>Glandon<\/span>,\nPaul Bills, or Dwain McKenzie \u2013 just to name a few.<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Having\nan evangelist like Howard Anderson traveling the coastline with Dad in this\njourney increased the effectiveness of the ministry as they traversed the\narctic coastline.&nbsp; Jesus never sent any of His disciples out by\nthemselves.&nbsp; They traveled two-by-two.&nbsp; It increased the\nmanifestation of Holy Spirit\u2019s working in their midst, and the two of them\nreinforced one another.&nbsp;<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>By\nthe time they reached Barter Island, the villagers in <span class=SpellE>Kaktovik<\/span>\nwere expecting them.&nbsp; Incidentally, word spreads very quickly in the\narctic whether you have telephone or radio or nothing.&nbsp; We used to refer\nto it as &quot;Mukluk Telegraph.&quot;&nbsp; You never know how word manages to\ntravel so quickly, but it does!<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>By\nthe time Dad and Howard had wrapped up their ministry at Barter Island and\nprepared to head back, there was a fairly decent contingent of folks there who\nwanted their own church, so preparations were made to build a church in <span\nclass=SpellE>Kaktovik<\/span>.&nbsp; Although I didn't participate in the\nbuilding of that church, my brother did.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In\nthe next few years to come, churches similar to the ones we built at Wainwright\nand Point Hope would be erected at <span class=SpellE>Nuiqsut<\/span> and <span\nclass=SpellE>Atqasuk<\/span>.&nbsp; Out of that one missionary journey from\nKotzebue to Barter Island came the core of the people who were the foundation\nof five churches: (from east to west) the church at Barter Island (<span\nclass=SpellE>Kaktovik<\/span>), <span class=SpellE>Nuiqsut<\/span>, Wainwright, <span\nclass=SpellE>Atqasuk<\/span> and Point Hope.&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Nuiqsut<\/span>\nand <span class=SpellE>Atqasuk<\/span> did not have their churches until the\nlate 1960's or early 1970's (sorry, but I've forgotten those dates) when those\ncommunities became official towns in Alaska.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>By\nthat time, I was <span class=SpellE>pastoring<\/span> in Salt Lake City, and\nthen in Long Beach, California with Dwain McKenzie, so I was not part of\nbuilding them.&nbsp; Nevertheless, when the time came, Dad was supervising all\nof the churches in the arctic, and when requests came for new churches to be\nadded in those communities, he had already been through this exercise many times.&nbsp;\nHe provided the people in those villages with the building plans and the bill\nof materials, along with making the contacts for them to purchase all of their\nnecessary supplies and get them shipped.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>David\n<span class=SpellE>Frankson<\/span> was the postmaster at Point Hope.&nbsp; I'm\nnot sure how long he had filled that position, but I suspect he was likely only\nthe third or fourth postmaster in the village's whole history.&nbsp; A wizened\nsort of a guy, he was the perfect caricature of a hunter and trapper -- and he\ncertainly did his fair share of both in order to keep meat on the table for his\nrather large family.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>David\nwas also a longtime Episcopalian and a solid member of the Episcopal church at\nPoint Hope.&nbsp; Those early Episcopal missionaries had the spiritual goods\nwhen they established that church many decades earlier, and the next two or\nthree generations of ministers who followed them did their best to lay some\ndecent foundations in the people of the village.&nbsp; What they and the more\nrecent generations did not have was an understanding of spiritual warfare, nor\nany concept of how evil spirits capitalize on ancient traditions to hold people\nin captivity.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Tradition\nis one of the greatest snares to spiritual advancement and growth in one's walk\nwith Jesus Christ.&nbsp; If that tradition happens to be founded in what folks\nso glibly refer to as &quot;mother nature,&quot; animism (the belief that\ncertain animals embody spiritual power and authority, and are due reverence and\nworship), and shamanism.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>So\nthat you better understand shamanism, let me cite a paragraph or two from the\nEncarta Encyclopedia's definition:&nbsp;<i><span style='color:#002060'>[A\nShaman is a] religious specialist, originally found in hunting-gathering\ncultures, which are loosely structured, technologically simple, and\nhomogeneous. The word shaman is derived from a word in the <span class=SpellE>Tungusic<\/span>\nlanguage of Siberia, one of the areas in which the classical form of shamanism\nis found.<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#002060'>&nbsp;Although a shaman can achieve religious status by\nheredity, personal quest, or vocation, the recognition and call of the\nindividual is always an essential part of that individual's elevation to the\nnew status. The shaman, usually a man, is essentially a medium, a mouthpiece of\nthe spirits who became his familiars at his initiation, during which he\nfrequently undergoes prolonged fasts, seclusion, and other ordeals leading to\ndreams and visions. Training by experienced shamans follows.<\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;\nline-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#002060'>The main religious tasks of a shaman are healing and divination.\nBoth are achieved either by spirit possession or by the departure of the\nshaman's soul to heaven or to the underworld. Shamans also divine the\nwhereabouts of game, the position of the enemy, and the best way of\nsafeguarding and increasing the food supply.
