Thinking about centuries of tradition within the church world,\nyou understand that the terms, \u201capostle\u201d or \u201cprophet,\u201d were neglected and even\nfrowned upon when referring to certain leaders who were particularly anointed\nby the Lord to accomplish things and lay foundations in areas where there were\nnone.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Growing up with parents whose lives manifested everything the\nWord describes as \u201capostolic,\u201d the cessationist<\/span>\ndoctrines that have permeated the body of Christ since the fourth century were\nbaffling to me.  Dad would have cringed if someone had referred to him as\nan apostle (the term, \u201cmissionary\u201d was the only thing he could refer to or\nrelate to as his calling) and yet he was the epitome of an apostle.  He\nlaid foundations where no one else had gone.  Though things have changed\nin the years since, the denomination Dad was with could not comprehend the\nrealm of the apostolic, and twice thought they could enforce mandates on him\nthat would have violated everything God was instructing him to do.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

His travels and ministry throughout the arctic, laying\nfoundations in the lives of a people who knew little of the Lord Jesus Christ\n(other than religious tradition which blinded them to the truth) and even less\nof Holy Spirit became a pattern for the generations of ministers who have\nfollowed.  Many would-be \u201cmissionaries\u201d or pastors who thought they could\nstep into the ministries he established soon discovered otherwise, and a few\neven abandoned the communities where the denomination had sent them. \nTheir Bible College training did little to prepare them for the reality of\nbuilding on the foundations that Dad had laid, along with some of the others\nwho followed in his foundational footsteps, like Arvin Glandon<\/span>,\nPaul Bills, or Dwain McKenzie \u2013 just to name a few.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Having\nan evangelist like Howard Anderson traveling the coastline with Dad in this\njourney increased the effectiveness of the ministry as they traversed the\narctic coastline.  Jesus never sent any of His disciples out by\nthemselves.  They traveled two-by-two.  It increased the\nmanifestation of Holy Spirit\u2019s working in their midst, and the two of them\nreinforced one another. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

By\nthe time they reached Barter Island, the villagers in Kaktovik<\/span>\nwere expecting them.  Incidentally, word spreads very quickly in the\narctic whether you have telephone or radio or nothing.  We used to refer\nto it as "Mukluk Telegraph."  You never know how word manages to\ntravel so quickly, but it does!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

By\nthe time Dad and Howard had wrapped up their ministry at Barter Island and\nprepared to head back, there was a fairly decent contingent of folks there who\nwanted their own church, so preparations were made to build a church in Kaktovik<\/span>.  Although I didn't participate in the\nbuilding of that church, my brother did.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nthe next few years to come, churches similar to the ones we built at Wainwright\nand Point Hope would be erected at Nuiqsut<\/span> and Atqasuk<\/span>.  Out of that one missionary journey from\nKotzebue to Barter Island came the core of the people who were the foundation\nof five churches: (from east to west) the church at Barter Island (Kaktovik<\/span>), Nuiqsut<\/span>, Wainwright, Atqasuk<\/span> and Point Hope.  Nuiqsut<\/span>\nand Atqasuk<\/span> did not have their churches until the\nlate 1960's or early 1970's (sorry, but I've forgotten those dates) when those\ncommunities became official towns in Alaska.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

By\nthat time, I was pastoring<\/span> in Salt Lake City, and\nthen in Long Beach, California with Dwain McKenzie, so I was not part of\nbuilding them.  Nevertheless, when the time came, Dad was supervising all\nof the churches in the arctic, and when requests came for new churches to be\nadded in those communities, he had already been through this exercise many times. \nHe provided the people in those villages with the building plans and the bill\nof materials, along with making the contacts for them to purchase all of their\nnecessary supplies and get them shipped.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

David\nFrankson<\/span> was the postmaster at Point Hope.  I'm\nnot sure how long he had filled that position, but I suspect he was likely only\nthe third or fourth postmaster in the village's whole history.  A wizened\nsort of a guy, he was the perfect caricature of a hunter and trapper -- and he\ncertainly did his fair share of both in order to keep meat on the table for his\nrather large family.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

David\nwas also a longtime Episcopalian and a solid member of the Episcopal church at\nPoint Hope.  Those early Episcopal missionaries had the spiritual goods\nwhen they established that church many decades earlier, and the next two or\nthree generations of ministers who followed them did their best to lay some\ndecent foundations in the people of the village.  What they and the more\nrecent generations did not have was an understanding of spiritual warfare, nor\nany concept of how evil spirits capitalize on ancient traditions to hold people\nin captivity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Tradition\nis one of the greatest snares to spiritual advancement and growth in one's walk\nwith Jesus Christ.  If that tradition happens to be founded in what folks\nso glibly refer to as "mother nature," animism (the belief that\ncertain animals embody spiritual power and authority, and are due reverence and\nworship), and shamanism.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

So\nthat you better understand shamanism, let me cite a paragraph or two from the\nEncarta Encyclopedia's definition: [A\nShaman is a] religious specialist, originally found in hunting-gathering\ncultures, which are loosely structured, technologically simple, and\nhomogeneous. The word shaman is derived from a word in the Tungusic<\/span>\nlanguage of Siberia, one of the areas in which the classical form of shamanism\nis found.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 Although a shaman can achieve religious status by\nheredity, personal quest, or vocation, the recognition and call of the\nindividual is always an essential part of that individual's elevation to the\nnew status. The shaman, usually a man, is essentially a medium, a mouthpiece of\nthe spirits who became his familiars at his initiation, during which he\nfrequently undergoes prolonged fasts, seclusion, and other ordeals leading to\ndreams and visions. Training by experienced shamans follows.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The main religious tasks of a shaman are healing and divination.\nBoth are achieved either by spirit possession or by the departure of the\nshaman's soul to heaven or to the underworld. Shamans also divine the\nwhereabouts of game, the position of the enemy, and the best way of\nsafeguarding and increasing the food supply. Shamans may occupy an elevated\nsocial and economic position, especially if they are successful healers<\/span><\/i>.  \u00a9 1993-2003\nMicrosoft Corporation. All rights reserved.]

\nShamans have been a part of Eskimo and Indian culture for many centuries, and\nshamanistic tradition was certainly ingrained in the Inupiat culture of the\narctic coasts of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.  Encarta's description\nincorporates several words all Christians should find extremely enlightening --\nparticularly in light of God's command to His people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nDeuteronomy 18:10-21, we are told<\/span>, "There shall not\nbe found among you any one that maketh<\/span> his son or his\ndaughter to pass through the fire, or that useth<\/span>\ndivination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer,\nor a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.  For\nall that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these\nabominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"Thou shalt<\/span> be perfect with the\nLORD thy God.  For these nations, which thou shalt<\/span>\npossess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee,\nthe LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.  The LORD thy God will\nraise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto\nme; unto him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst<\/span>\nof the LORD thy God in Horeb<\/span> in the day of the\nassembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither\nlet me see this great fire any more, that I die not.  And the LORD said\nunto me, They have well-spoken that which they have spoken.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren,\nlike unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto\nthem all that I shall command him.  And it shall come to pass, that\nwhosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I\nwill require it of him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my\nname, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name\nof other gods, even that prophet shall die.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"And if thou say in thine<\/span> heart,\nHow shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?  When a prophet\nspeaketh<\/span> in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow\nnot, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but\nthe prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt<\/span>\nnot be afraid of him."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Now,\nI may be a bit long in my quotation from Deuteronomy 18, but I wanted to draw\nthe complete picture for you so you can understand the bondage of people who\nlive under shamans, witches, fortune tellers, astrologers, mediums and the\nlike.  Encarta's description of a shaman includes "divination"\nand "a consulter with familiar spirits." <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

That\ndescription also incorporates the fact that the shaman accomplishes his\npurposes by "spirit possession" -- meaning that the shaman is\npossessed by evil spirits.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nshaman certainly does not accomplish his goals and purposes by and through the\nHoly Spirit, and God's Word makes very clear the fact that He directs His\npeople through a prophet whom He calls, commissions and anoints to speak only\nwhat He says.  The consequence under the Law of Moses for the person who\ndared speak as an oracle or mouthpiece of God words that did not come from Him\nwas death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

You\nsee, God's purpose is to direct His people to health, to strength, to\nprosperity, to abundant living -- all in stark contrast to those who listen to\nthe voices of evil spirits.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

One\nof Encarta's descriptions of the shaman is that he occupies an elevated social\nand economic position.  You may recall the story I shared with you in the\nseries of Coffee Breaks titled, 15 STEPS, of the young man -- "Johnny"\n-- who had been being prepared and "anointed" to become the next\nshaman in Barrow, and the disastrous outcome of his life when he failed to\nreceive the deliverance he needed from those evil spirits.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nshaman in Point Hope certainly occupied an elevated social position in the\nminds of the villagers, and -- like all shamans -- parlayed his position for\ncontrol over and in the lives of those people who revered the power and\nauthority he was perceived to possess.  To a large extent, the local\nshaman's influence in the community had been largely lost to the message of\nJesus Christ and previous Episcopal priests who genuinely preached the Gospel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When\nwe arrived in Point Hope, however, the community had been through a period of\ndeclining influence of the Gospel due to watered-down preaching from priests\nwho did not know the Lord personally, and simply held their titles and\npositions for political and personal reasons.  Correspondingly, the power\nand influence of the shaman had been increasing, and he had played his position\nand perceived authority for all it was worth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nextent of his "divination" of where the best hunting was for the\nvillagers was more hype than reality, and his use of incantations, spells,\npotions and the like to create an aura of "healing" for sick people\nwas more deception than reality.  The "healed" people often\nbegan to suffer from recurrence of their illnesses, diseases or afflictions,\nand because they had experienced momentary relief during their previous\n"healing" episodes with the shaman, they would return for more of the\nsame.  Through this repetitious cycle of perceived "healing" the\nshaman gained in influence and perceived spiritual power.  What no one\nseemed to see (and in truth their eyes had been blinded by evil spirits) was\nthat no real healing was taking place.  The people were simply being kept\nin bondage to the shaman.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\npriest who was serving the Episcopal church at Point Hope when we arrived found\nhimself in a battle of wills and a continual vying for power and\ninfluence.  Because he lacked any real spiritual authority, those who\ncontinued their attendance in the church did so more out of tradition and habit\nthan out of receiving any real ministry.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\npriest found himself having to play the same manipulative games the shaman\nused, often deploying fear as a tactic, along with threats that if the people\ndid not follow his direction, when they died they would not be buried in the\n"sacred" cemetery with the rest of the Christians.  Sorry for\nthe long preface to today's story, but I wanted you to see the spiritual\ndarkness that prevailed in Point Hope when we arrived.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

David\nFrankson<\/span> was among those villagers who had\nexperienced genuine salvation when Dad and Howard Andersen had pitched their\ntent and held their evangelistic meetings during their coastal journey. \nHis near-lifetime attachment to the Episcopal church, however, kept him\nfaithful in his attendance and that of his family; and when we opened the doors\nof the new church for the first time, the Frankson<\/span>\nfamily was not there.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

There\nwere curiosity-seekers who came to find out what we were doing and saying for\nthe first few weeks, but apart from two or three families who decided to break\nfrom their traditions and become a part of the new church, attendance and\nparticipation was pretty sparse to begin with.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It\nwas a stark contrast to Barrow and Wainwright, and harked back to the early\ndays of Dad's ministry in Nome.  A group of young teenage girls in the\nvillage took to Mom, however, and though they were afraid (because of peer\npressure and family pressure) to come to the regular church services, they\ngladly participated in a club that Mom decided to call "The Esthers<\/span>."  Patterned after Esther in Old\nTestament times, Mom used the opportunity to train these young girls in social\ngraces while at the same time drawing a picture of the call of Jesus Christ as\nKing to his bride-in-preparation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

One\nof the young girls who was drawn to the message of Jesus Christ was David Frankson's<\/span> daughter, Rosa.  One day as Mom was\nsharing, Rosa and a couple of her friends responded to the quickening of the\nHoly Spirit and made Jesus Christ Lord of their lives.  Not long\nthereafter, Rosa was baptized in the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nchange in this 12-year-old girl was nothing short of spectacular.  She\nchanged from being a timid youngster to a bold and outspoken preacher of the\nGospel, testifying to her friends and peers of the grace and love of Jesus\nChrist.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Next\nweek I\u2019ll share with you the story of the first Eskimo martyr \u2013 the 12-year-old\nRosa Frankson<\/span> \u2013 who refused to give up her testimony\nin the face of threats and persecution.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
