This week\n(and next) we need to talk about the impartation that comes from the laying on\nof hands. Let\u2019s take time today to lay some foundations in our understanding as\nto both the historical and post-Pentecost implications associated with this.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>In\norder to properly deal with this subject, we need to get back to the root of\nHebrew thought so as to understand where this practice comes from, and the\nspiritual significance of having hands laid upon someone.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Out\nof several hundred references throughout Scripture, the very first time we see\nsomeone laying hands upon another occurs when Jacob lays his right hand on\nEphraim, and his left hand on Manasseh \u2014 the two sons of Joseph.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'>Genesis 48:13-20, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\nmso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>:<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>\n<\/span><span style='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward\nIsrael\u2019s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel\u2019s right hand,\nand brought them near unto him.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon\nEphraim\u2019s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh\u2019s head,\nguiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my <span\nclass=SpellE>fathers<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life\nlong unto this day, The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads;\nand let my name be named on them, and the name of my <span class=SpellE>fathers<\/span>\nAbraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the\nearth. And his father refused, and\nsaid, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also\nshall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his\nseed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying,\nIn thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh:\nand he set Ephraim before Manasseh.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>We\ncan infer in each of the previous instances where we see the Blessing conveyed\nthat hands were laid upon the one being blessed, but this is the first time we\nactually see it happening. What makes this event so important in our\nunderstanding is that we see the laying on of both the right hand \u2014 to Ephraim,\nwho was the younger son of Joseph \u2014 and the left hand \u2014 to Manasseh, who was\nthe firstborn son of Joseph, and normally the one to whom the primary blessing\nwould be conveyed.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>As\nJacob begins the blessing, however, he speaks the same words over both Ephraim\nand Manasseh (<\/span><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>see verse 16<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'>: <\/span><span style='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and\nlet my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers' Abraham and Isaac;\nand let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.) <\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>He thus communicates\nthe same blessing with both right and left hand, conveying the <\/span><span\nclass=SpellE><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Georgia\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#002060'>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span><i><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Georgia\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\nmso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";color:#002060'> <\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>of Abraham, Isaac and\nJacob.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>But\nwatch what happens next. Joseph knows from family history and from the general\npractice of the time that the one receiving the greater blessing must have the\nlaying on of the right hand. Jacob, however, has a direct word from the Spirit\nof the Lord and acts accordingly. Though not specifically stated in this\ninstance, Samuel would have used his right hand to pour the oil upon David.\nOnce the oil was poured on him Samuel followed the priestly tradition of using\nhis right hand to rub the oil upon David\u2019s head and smear it liberally into his\nhair and skin.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Every\ntime we see the anointing of a king or a priest anywhere in the Old Testament,\nthe oil was first poured upon the individual, and it was then rubbed into their\nhead, signifying a saturation that was to spread throughout their entire being.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The\nanointing was a commissioning which set a person apart for the purpose to which\nGod had called and designed that individual to fulfill.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>Laying\non of hands is not, and was not, strictly a New Testament \u2014 post-Pentecost \u2014\nrealm of ministry. One only has to look at how David and\/or Solomon describes\nthe hand of God \u2014 or more accurately, the hands of God, and what each hand\nsignifies. That Rod of Authority, of course, represented the hand of God\nagainst the enemy.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>The\nleft hand needed to also be outstretched in order for Joshua to experience\ncomplete safety and protection from the enemy he was pitted against. When both\nhands were extended, Joshua was able to fight effectively and completely subdue\nhis foe.<\/span><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>We\nsee one of the first examples in Deuteronomy 7 of what takes place when both\nhands are laid upon an individual as a sign of separation, or being set apart\nfrom the corporate body \u2014 and in this case, the act of separation is the\nexecution of the judgment of the Law of Moses. In this instance, Moses is\ntalking about someone who has been witnessed bowing down to, or serving some\nfalse god, and the contamination that would bring into the camp of Israel.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:\n.0001pt;line-height:normal'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\n\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'>Deuteronomy 17: 5-7, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\"'>:<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:\"Times New Roman\",\"serif\";mso-fareast-font-family:\n\"Times New Roman\"'> <\/span><span style='font-size:12.5pt;font-family:\"NewsweekGrotesqueEight\",\"serif\";\nmso-fareast-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";mso-bidi-font-family:\"Times New Roman\";\ncolor:#C00000'>Then <span class=SpellE>shalt<\/span> thou bring forth that man\nor that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even\nthat man or that woman, and <span class=SpellE>shalt<\/span> stone them with\nstones, till they die.
