 <\/p>\n\n

Well, have you gotten past the hustle and bustle (and\ncommercialization) of the Christmas season and New Years? Whewww<\/span>!!!\nGet's really tiring, doesn't it? Unless a person is really focused on what's\ntaking place spiritually, and the new dimensions of the Spirit that God is\ntaking us into, this holiday season can really become stressful and distracting\nwith all of the sales pitches, and all of the Regressives<\/span>'\n(I refuse to call them Progressives, and they are NOT liberals -- they are\nanything but!) efforts to get rid of the name of Jesus, taking every spiritual\nsignificance away from the celebratory activities of the season.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Anyway,\nlet's get on with our discussions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Hebrews\n6:1-3, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\n<\/span>\u201cTherefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let\nus go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from\ndead works, and of faith toward God,<\/span>\n<\/span>Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of\nresurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.<\/span> <\/span>And this will we do, if God permit.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

So\nfar we have talked about the foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith\ntoward God, and we spent weeks dealing with the doctrine of baptisms. This week\n(and next) we need to talk about the impartation that comes from the laying on\nof hands. Let\u2019s take time today to lay some foundations in our understanding as\nto both the historical and post-Pentecost implications associated with this.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\norder to properly deal with this subject, we need to get back to the root of\nHebrew thought so as to understand where this practice comes from, and the\nspiritual significance of having hands laid upon someone.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Out\nof several hundred references throughout Scripture, the very first time we see\nsomeone laying hands upon another occurs when Jacob lays his right hand on\nEphraim, and his left hand on Manasseh \u2014 the two sons of Joseph.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Genesis 48:13-20, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward\nIsrael\u2019s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel\u2019s right hand,\nand brought them near unto him.<\/span> <\/span>And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon\nEphraim\u2019s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh\u2019s head,\nguiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers<\/span><\/span> <\/span>Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life\nlong unto this day, The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads;\nand let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers<\/span>\nAbraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the\nearth. And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of\nEphraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father\u2019s hand, to remove it from\nEphraim\u2019s head unto Manasseh\u2019s head.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is\nthe firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. And his father refused, and\nsaid, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also\nshall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his\nseed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying,\nIn thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh:\nand he set Ephraim before Manasseh.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

We\ncan infer in each of the previous instances where we see the Blessing conveyed\nthat hands were laid upon the one being blessed, but this is the first time we\nactually see it happening. What makes this event so important in our\nunderstanding is that we see the laying on of both the right hand \u2014 to Ephraim,\nwho was the younger son of Joseph \u2014 and the left hand \u2014 to Manasseh, who was\nthe firstborn son of Joseph, and normally the one to whom the primary blessing\nwould be conveyed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

As\nJacob begins the blessing, however, he speaks the same words over both Ephraim\nand Manasseh (<\/span>see verse 16<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and\nlet my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers' Abraham and Isaac;\nand let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.) <\/span>He thus communicates\nthe same blessing with both right and left hand, conveying the <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/i>of Abraham, Isaac and\nJacob.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nwatch what happens next. Joseph knows from family history and from the general\npractice of the time that the one receiving the greater blessing must have the\nlaying on of the right hand. Jacob, however, has a direct word from the Spirit\nof the Lord and acts accordingly. Where we read that Jacob guided his hand\n\u201cwittingly,\u201d we see the Hebrew word,<\/span>\n<\/span>sakal<\/span><\/i><\/span>,<\/span>\n<\/span>which\nmeans: <\/span>to act circumspectly,\nto act with wise insight and foreknowledge<\/span>.\n<\/span>Interestingly,\nit also contains the meaning:<\/span> <\/span>to cause to prosper<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Notice\nhow Jacob differentiates now between the blessing of the right hand, and the\nblessing of the left hand (see verse 19):<\/span>\n<\/span>And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it:\nhe also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his\nyounger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude\nof nations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It\nbecomes clear, therefore, from this example, that the right hand conveys power,\nauthority, multiplication of the specifically imparted in a manner which is\neasily seen and demonstrated in the years to come. It\u2019s not that the blessing\nconveyed with the left hand is anything to sneeze at (and we will talk more\nabout this later): it\u2019s just that there is a totally different character to the\nblessing of the left hand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It\nshould also be clear from Jacob\u2019s words that he was describing a blessing that\nwould manifest itself in not just years, but generations to come. One does not\nbecome <\/span>a multitude of nations<\/span>\n<\/span>in\na generation, or two generations, or even three generations! The Hebrew word\ntranslated \u201cmultitude\u201d is the word,<\/span>\n<\/span>rob<\/span><\/i>,\nwhich literally means:<\/span> <\/span>huge, multiplied in number, an innumerable abundance<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nblessing and impartation that comes by the laying on of the left hand,\ntherefore, is of great consequence, and not to be diminished or degraded.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There\nis an aspect of the laying on of hands that needs to be considered \u2014 and this\nis one that is generally missed because it is not so obvious or plainly written\nin Scripture \u2014 and that is the impartation of the anointing of Holy Spirit.\nConsider Samuel and David:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I Samuel 16:12-13, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of\na beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise,\nanoint him: for this is he.<\/span> <\/span>Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst\nof his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day\nforward.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

One\nof the aspects of the commissioning that happens when folks are anointed is\nthat it comes with the right hand. Though not specifically stated in this\ninstance, Samuel would have used his right hand to pour the oil upon David.\nOnce the oil was poured on him Samuel followed the priestly tradition of using\nhis right hand to rub the oil upon David\u2019s head and smear it liberally into his\nhair and skin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Every\ntime we see the anointing of a king or a priest anywhere in the Old Testament,\nthe oil was first poured upon the individual, and it was then rubbed into their\nhead, signifying a saturation that was to spread throughout their entire being.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nanointing was a commissioning which set a person apart for the purpose to which\nGod had called and designed that individual to fulfill.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Laying\non of hands is not, and was not, strictly a New Testament \u2014 post-Pentecost \u2014\nrealm of ministry. One only has to look at how David and\/or Solomon describes\nthe hand of God \u2014 or more accurately, the hands of God, and what each hand\nsignifies. Take a look at a few examples from the Psalms and Proverbs:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 16:11 KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness<\/span> of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for\nevermore.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 20:5, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Now know I that the LORD saveth<\/span> his\nanointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his\nright hand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 21:8, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Thine<\/span><\/span> hand shall find out all thine<\/span> enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that\nhate thee.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 48:10, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of\nthe earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 77:10, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years\nof the right hand of the most High.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 89:13, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy\nright hand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 91:7, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>A thousand shall fall at\nthy [<\/span>tsad<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i> <\/span>left<\/span>] side, and ten thousand\nat thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Proverbs 3:16, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches\nand honour<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Ecclesiastes 10:2, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>A wise man\u2019s heart is at his right hand; but a fool\u2019s heart at\nhis left.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

We\nhave only looked at a tiny fraction of the verses that consider the right hand\nand the left, but in these few we see the following:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nright hand is the hand of strength, power, authority, salvation, health,\nprovision, as well as being the bearer of long-life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Conversely,\nthe left hand is the hand of mercy, of tenderness, discernment, steady support\nand assistance, protection and safety, wealth and prosperity and honor (respect\nfrom society) \u2014 and for those not in tune with the Lord, frowardness<\/span>\n(foolish and non-thought-out direction resulting in chaos or destruction.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Now,\nconsider the application of both hands at the same time in the Word. Take a\nlook at the following picture:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Exodus 17:8-13, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Then came Amalek<\/span>, and fought with\nIsrael in Rephidim<\/span>.<\/span>\n<\/span>And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight\nwith Amalek<\/span>: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the\nhill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him,\nand fought with Amalek<\/span>: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur<\/span> went up to the top of the hill.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel\nprevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek<\/span>\nprevailed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But Moses\u2019 hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it\nunder him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur<\/span>\nstayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side;\nand his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.<\/span> <\/span>And Joshua discomfited Amalek<\/span> and his\npeople with the edge of the sword.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There\nare two individual pictures seen in this event: the first being that of Moses\nholding the Rod of Authority in his right hand, the second of the necessity of\nhaving his left hand outstretched toward the ongoing battle between Joshua\n(with his soldiers) and the Amalekites<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It\nwas much more than simply having his right hand outstretched with the Rod of\nAuthority. That Rod of Authority, of course, represented the hand of God\nagainst the enemy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nleft hand needed to also be outstretched in order for Joshua to experience\ncomplete safety and protection from the enemy he was pitted against. When both\nhands were extended, Joshua was able to fight effectively and completely subdue\nhis foe.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nsee one of the first examples in Deuteronomy 7 of what takes place when both\nhands are laid upon an individual as a sign of separation, or being set apart\nfrom the corporate body \u2014 and in this case, the act of separation is the\nexecution of the judgment of the Law of Moses. In this instance, Moses is\ntalking about someone who has been witnessed bowing down to, or serving some\nfalse god, and the contamination that would bring into the camp of Israel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Deuteronomy 17: 5-7, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>Then shalt<\/span> thou bring forth that man\nor that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even\nthat man or that woman, and shalt<\/span> stone them with\nstones, till they die. At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall\nhe that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he\nshall not be put to death.<\/span> <\/span>The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to\ndeath, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt<\/span>\nput the evil away from among you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Here\nwe see that those who serve as witnesses (in this instance, against someone who\nhas committed evil) must lay both hands upon the individual who has\ntransgressed as a sign of separation, and as an authoritative and legal act.\nTheir act of laying hands upon the offender becomes the first witness against\nhim or her, but it is still necessary for the camp of Israel to agree and for\nthem to stretch forth their hands and lay them upon the individual as the final\nwitness of separation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In\nthe case of a person committing an act against God within the camp of Israel,\nthe significance of the separation from Israel meant death to the offender. For\nthose laying their hands on the offender, they were swearing their lives to the\ntruth before God, and they were acting as His proxy in enacting and executing\nHis judgment.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This\nbrings us to the critical aspect of knowing whereof we testify or bringing\nwitness, either for or against, as proxy for the Lord. David puts it like this\nin Psalm 24:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Who is it that will be elevated to a high place and promoted by\nGod? Or, who shall live and continue to be ordained to live and stand as having\nbeen set apart to the holy places and things of God?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

He whose hands are clean, innocent and blameless, whose heart is\nclear and does not condemn him, whose soul and mind have not been self-elevated\nto idolatry and the worship of reason [which is useless and deceptive], nor has\nhe sworn [by sevens] and testified falsely and fraudulently [in order to\nexecute judgment against another].<\/span>\n<\/span>(Psalm\n24:2-3, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

To\nadd to what David has already written, he makes the following prophecy in Psalm\n28:4-5: <\/span>Give them according to their deeds, and according to the\nwickedness of their endeavours<\/span>: give them after the\nwork of their hands; render to them their desert.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation\nof his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nwrap up this basis for understanding the laying on of hands by looking at one\nother use of the hands as David sings it:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 63:3-4, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>\n<\/span>Because thy lovingkindness<\/span> is better\nthan life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I\nwill lift up my hands in thy name.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthis instance (and many other similar Psalms), David expresses the extending\nforth of his hands as the means to bless the Lord, to magnify the Lord, to\npraise His Name. When he says, \u201cI will lift up my hands IN thy name,\u201d he is\ngiving his hands to the Lord, placing them IN and INTO His very character,\nmakeup and essence \u2014 making his hands available to the Lord for His plans,\npurposes and destiny.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n
