'Mornin<\/span>' Folks! Had a good week so\nfar? Great! I'm continuing on reprising a few stories that go back ten years or\nmore when I first began publishing these Coffee Break. I'm going to return to a\nrather casual, kinda<\/span>-round-the-table, relaxed way of\nwriting (conversational style, OK?) for this -- and next week's -- Coffee\nBreak. This week's Coffee Break deals with a few hair raising adventures.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You all know what a point of no return is, don\u2019t you? Where you\u2019ve\ncommitted yourself to some course of action or direction, and suddenly\nsomething happens \u2013 maybe some event that means life or death \u2013 and you have no\nchoice but to proceed forward on your committed course?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Boy, do I have some stories and some crazy experiences on that\nsubject! Let\u2019s see where this discussion takes us today. Got your coffee\npoured, yet? Hurry up!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Traveling to Kotzebue, Alaska one day from Fairbanks (this was a\nbunch of years ago) in one of those Fairchild F-27\u2019s \u2013 you \u201cold folks\u201d remember\nthem, the upper-wing planes with a pair of turboprop engines \u2013 we lost an\nengine. In case you don\u2019t know the geography, Kotzebue is roughly 450 miles\nwest-northwest of Fairbanks out on one of the western tips of Alaska in the\nBering Sea. Funny thing, though. We were 235 \u2013 240 miles into our flight.\nThat\u2019s just over halfway.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at a map, will you. Except for some native\ncommunities, fishing villages and the like, there\u2019s a whole lot of nothing in\nthat stretch! Nothing, meaning no landing strips or airports big enough to\naccommodate an F-27 \u2013 especially one flown by Wien Alaska Airlines. You had to\nhave lived there and flown Wien to appreciate that comment. When Noel Wien\nstarted his airline back at the end of the biplane era, he flew freight and\nused whatever space he had left for passengers.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Things never changed for as many years as that airline existed in\nAlaska. Even when the first 737\u2019s came out, Wien would put a cargo buffer about\nmidway through the aircraft. It was movable, and \u2013 depending on the amount of\ncargo or freight being carried \u2013 the plane would carry anywhere from 20 \u2013 60\npassengers. The freight often matched the entire load capacity, and passengers\nmade our weight exceed the aircraft\u2019s rating. I think the only plane in Wien\u2019s\nhistory that never had a problem with the freight \u2013 passenger thing was the\nDC-3 \u2013 the WWII Gooney Bird. That plane just never seemed to have a weight\nproblem. \u2018Course it flew like a Mack Truck, too! Took forever to get it moving,\nbut once it was, look out!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I digress. We\u2019d just passed the flight\u2019s point of no\nreturn on the way to Kotzebue when we lost an engine. This F-27 flight wasn\u2019t\nany different from any other Wien flight: it was way overloaded.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So what do you think happens when you are flying an overloaded\nplane and you lose one of your two engines? Hmmmm<\/span>\u2026\u2026.\nAnybody? Yup. You got it! The plane starts to come down. You lose altitude.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And we started dropping. Normally configured, the F-27 probably\nheld 45 \u2013 50 passengers. With the freight and cargo taking up most of the\ncabin, we had perhaps a dozen folks on that flight.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I looked out the window and saw the engine sputtering, blowing\nsmoke and all that, and finally the prop stopped. The pilot came over the\nintercom to advise us that we had lost an engine (Duhhhh<\/span>.\nI wonder if anybody noticed!) and that there were no other airports in range.\nWe were committed to Kotzebue.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This was one of those times when you\u2019d better be prayed up! The\npilot was fighting to keep the plane aloft long enough for us to reach\nKotzebue, knowing that it was really going to be close. I saw some folks that\nday who probably hadn\u2019t talked to the Lord in years \u2013 if ever! They were going\nthrough their gyrations and gymnastics, making the sign of the cross, lips\nmoving, faces etched with the fear of death \u2013 you know the program!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I sat back in my seat not meaning to laugh or chuckle at what I\nwas seeing, but having perfect peace in my whole being. \u201cLord, from what you\u2019ve\ntold me throughout the years, I know my time hasn\u2019t come, so if you have to\nsend a couple of angels to hold up the wings and keep us aloft until we reach\nKotzebue, then do it \u2013 in Jesus\u2019 name.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It was almost eerie. But it was a peaceful experience knowing that\nmy life \u2013 our lives \u2013 were totally in the Lord\u2019s care, and that there wasn\u2019t\none blessed thing anyone of us could do about the situation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You see, I had passed the point of no return many years before.\nI\u2019d committed myself to obeying and following the Lord Jesus Christ , no matter\nwhat He asked \u2013 regardless of the consequences. There was no turning back. That\u2019s\nthe greatest point of no return any person can pass in their life. Once you\u2019ve\npassed that point, you\u2019re committed. Whatever comes \u2013 whether for life or death\n\u2013 there is no changing things! You can\u2019t alter the circumstances. And it\ndoesn't matter! You simply follow the Lord wherever He leads.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Watching us drop closer and closer to the ground, I knew my\nfellow-passengers were near panic. I just smiled at them and said, \u201cIt\u2019s OK.\nThe Lord has it all under control. We\u2019ll make it to Kotzebue just fine!\u201d I\ndon\u2019t know how much difference those words made to anyone, but they seemed to\ntake some assurance in my confidence.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

50 miles out from Kotzebue, we were less than 500 feet above the\nground. Good thing the terrain was so flat! The pilot radioed ahead, of course,\nand the airport folks had Kotzebue\u2019s one ambulance and one fire truck waiting\nfor our arrival. We lined up for the runway with maybe 250 \u2013 300 feet of\naltitude. The pilot landed the plane smooth as silk on that one engine. No\nbumping. No skidding. No sideways jerking. \u2018Course, there wasn\u2019t a bad pilot in\nthat entire airline. Those Wien Alaska Airline pilots were the best anywhere in\nthe world. We came in as though everything was fine. It was, too. The Lord sent\nHis angels to carry the plane to its destination.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then there was that experience when I was traveling to Jackson\nHole, Wyoming from our office in Salt Lake City. It was the winter of 1969, as\nI recall. I was the President of Intermountain Electronics Corporation. The\ncompany VP, Bill, was riding with me in our GMC van. We\u2018d were headed to\nJackson to sign a contract to maintain some electronic equipment for a school.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In those days, U.S. Highway 89 was no freeway. Still isn\u2019t, for\nthe most part! The road had about six to eight inches of fresh snow, and there\nwas one set of tracks where a number of vehicles had been. It had warmed up\njust enough to form a crust, making it all but impossible to get out of the rut\nin an emergency.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You could see a couple of places where trucks had pulled off to allow\nother vehicles to pass, but they were few and far between. Mostly, it was just\none set of tracks \u2013 ruts \u2013 right down the center of the highway.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We were somewhere halfway between Logan and Garden City, Utah\n(according to my recollection) when we saw a bridge. The bridge was elevated\nover the creek, of course, and the road inclined upward to the bridge. It\nblocked our view so that you couldn\u2019t see anything coming down the road. We\nhadn\u2019t seen any traffic for quite awhile, and consequently were feeling OK\nabout driving 45 \u2013 50 miles per hour, the ruts notwithstanding.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The van was handling just fine \u2013 no rocking from side to side,\nnone of the kinds of problems you would encounter if the ruts were really\nnarrow. There was just one problem. It was starting to warm up, and there was a\nglaze on the pavement. You might call it black ice except for the fact that you\nreally couldn\u2019t see the pavement.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As we start up the rise to the bridge, we can suddenly see another\ncar coming at us, maybe 500 feet away. No problem if you\u2019re not doing 50 and\nnot in ruts. Hitting the brakes and trying to get out of the ruts was a joke!\nWe just kept right on going as though the van was programmed to drive in a\nstraight line.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Know what? We\u2019d passed the point of no return. Our speed, coupled\nwith the ruts and the slight glaze on the roadway meant we were committed to at\nleast a quarter-mile or better in front of us before we could stop.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The guy coming at us was doing exactly what we were doing. He\nhadn\u2019t seen any traffic, probably since he left Garden City, and he was\ncruising along like he had good sense. He was way past his point of no return.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Got the picture? Two vehicles pointed directly at each other, both\ngoing somewhere close to 50 miles per hour, 500 feet or so apart, and the\nstopping zone about 250 feet the other side of the approaching car. Man, have\nyou ever passed the point of no return!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Even with instantaneous reflexes, there\u2019s no time to do anything.\nThe wheel doesn\u2019t respond when you try to get out of the rut. Hitting the\nbrakes is almost like hitting the accelerator.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As we approached each other, I could see the terror in the eyes of\nthe fellow who was driving the oncoming car. It all happened so fast there was\nhardly time to blink. My business partner, Bill, the company VP, was a Mormon\nwho wasn\u2019t used to miracles, and sure wasn\u2019t used to shouting, \u201cJesus!\u201d in an\nemergency. (No offense meant to any of you<\/span> readers\nwho are Mormons. That was just where Bill was.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I did what I\u2019d been trained to do by my mother in an emergency.\nWe\u2019d had plenty of practice living in the arctic, and I\u2019d had plenty of\npractice in traveling with my mother and my brother as we raised money to build\nchurches. We had experienced some very close calls on the highways and even had\nan event in which the front end of the car Mom was driving came apart, and\nresulted in the car flipping over some three times or more.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cJESUS!!\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The word exploded from my lips. It wasn\u2019t a curse word. It was one\nof those split-second prayers when you don\u2019t have time for, \u201cDear Heavenly\nFather, I'm coming to you in my hour of need. I\u2019m in trouble and I need your\nhelp and intervention right now! Get us out of this mess in Jesus\u2019 Name, Amen.\u201d\nBy the time you pray all those words, it\u2019s all over with. You better KNOW the\nLord in those circumstances. Formal prayers don't cut it! Come to think of it,\nformal prayers have no business in the life of believers who have a genuine,\nintimate relationship with Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Like I said, we\u2019d long passed the point of no return. So had I in\nmy relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I was almost standing on the brakes. \u201cJESUS!\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The van came to a stop. So did the approaching car. Except for one\nthing. We were 250 \u2013 300 feet apart \u2013 THE OTHER SIDE OF EACH OTHER!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It happened in an instant. We literally passed through each other\nlike something out of a Sci-Fi movie. This was no science fiction! Just like\nJesus passed through walls and doors by dematerializing and then\nrematerializing, we passed through each other. In actual fact, we had shifted\ndimensions. We had transitioned instantly into a parallel dimension provided by\nHoly Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You see, this sort of thing was very natural for Jesus! He was\nnaturally supernatural. Know what? If we are in Christ, and He is in us, so are\nwe. We should come to expect this kind of thing as natural! Supernaturally\nnatural!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bill looked at me. He was white as a sheet. \u201cWhat just happened?\u201d\nhe asked. I was so stunned myself at what had just transpired that I only had a\none word answer, \u201cJesus.\u201d Guess I shouldn't have been so surprised, but I have\nto admit; it was the first time in my life I'd experienced this kind of thing.\nIt turned out not to be the last time, either! Guess that experience will have\nto wait for another time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We got out of the van and looked back. The driver of the other car\nwas standing outside his car looking at us and scratching his head and wiping\nhis brow. I'll never forget the look of horror on his face as we meshed into\nand through his car. It was one of those split second things you see that\nleaves an indelible impression. Standing outside his car in the snow, he didn\u2019t\nreally know what had just happened, and he was wondering if he was still alive\nor if this was some kind of strange dream.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It wasn\u2019t. It was real. OK -- for Bill and for the other driver,\nit was surreal! (smile) We got back in the van and headed down the road. It\ngave me a fabulous chance to talk to Bill about the Lord Jesus Christ in a way\nhe\u2019d never heard. He was listening, too!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019d passed the point of no return in a life and death situation\nand returned to talk about it. Kinda<\/span> like the Apollo\n13 astronauts. Remember them?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Apollo 13\u2026.well, I don\u2019t have time to go there today, but most of\nyou know that story anyway. The astronauts had a major disaster with their\nspacecraft \u2013 after they were committed to a trip to the moon at several times\nthe velocity of a speeding bullet. The accident happened when they were past\nthe point of no return. And they made it back, miraculously, by the grace of\nGod.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And that\u2019s another story. Maybe we\u2019ll get to talk about that\nanother time. I\u2019ve got some more of those point-of-no-return stories that\nhappened in Utah, but they\u2019ll wait, too.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway, have a spectacular day! Ohh<\/span>\u2026..and\nif you haven\u2019t passed the point of no return with Jesus, better take care of it\n\u2013 NOW!! Don\u2019t let any daisies grow under your feet. It just might be too late!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
