\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/b>Back when I was the Associate Pastor at\nFull Gospel Assembly in Salt Lake City, the Senior Pastor was a big Greek\nfellow by the name of Bill Christopulos<\/span>.  More\nthan any other person in my life, he got me interested in the historical\nsignificance of words -- the etymology, if you will.  Webster's Dictionary\ndefines etymology like this: "The origin and historical development\nof a linguistic form as shown by determining its basic elements, earliest known\nuse, and changes in form and meaning, tracing its transmission from one\nlanguage to another, identifying its cognates in other languages, and\nreconstructing its ancestral form where possible."\n<\/o:p>\n<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bill, being a Greek, and very fluent in the\n usage of the language, started me on a trek that has lasted throughout my\n life.  I have come to really enjoy the process of studying the history and\n usage of the Greek language, as well as English, and -- of course -- Hebrew. \n It didn't hurt that I had been required to study Latin while attending Burnhamthorpe<\/span> Collegiate Institute in Toronto some ten\n years earlier, and my limited knowledge of Latin served as a great foundation\n for my language studies.  It was Bill, incidentally, that gave me my very\n first Greek text of the New Testament, a study reference book that I still use\n today some 40 years later.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I've said all that to say this: While\n reading from Matthew's account of Jesus' birth, I was curious about the\n phraseology he uses as he relates the account of the "wise men" who\n came to see Jesus when He was perhaps 18 months-to-two years old.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The KJV<\/st1:translation_smarttag>\nreads (see Chapter 2:9-11) like this: <\/span>"When they had heard the king, they departed;\nand lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came\nand stood over where the young child was.  When they saw the star, they\nrejoiced with exceeding great joy.  And when they were come into the\nhouse, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped\nHim: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts;\ngold, frankincense, and myrrh."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Now, I've included a couple extra verses\n (9-10) for historical purpose.  My father spent perhaps 20 years\n researching the Star that foretold the coming of Jesus, and I have most of his\n notes compiling that research.  I was fascinated the other day to see a\n program on television where an attorney followed pretty much the same trek that\n Dad followed, and he arrived at the same conclusions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The Star of Bethlehem is no myth, and --\n contrary to the conclusions of some ignorant unbelievers -- neither are the\n wise men.  Dad came to the conclusion that most people who had researched\n this event were looking at the wrong years, and he was able to prove conclusively\n that Jesus was born in either 2 or 3 BC (depending on your interpretation of\n the Gregorian calendar).  But that's another topic.  Perhaps I'll\n take time to do a Coffee Break one of these days on the scientific and\n historical proofs of Jesus' birth, and the stupendous evidence that the wise\n men had at their disposal that triggered their search for Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Let me lay<\/span> a\n little foundation for what I want to share with you for today's discussion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There is a fair amount of historical and\n archaeological evidence to show that Daniel established a "school of\n prophets" when he became the Prime Minister during the reign of\n Darius.  Because of Daniel's great wisdom and knowledge of the Word of\n God, of course, he was elevated to the office of Prime Minister following the\n lion's den event.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

All the sorcerers and magicians who had\n been the king's advisors were thrown into the lion's den and killed by the\n lions.  The "prophets" who grew up under Daniel's tutelage were\n referred to as "magi.": -- men of wisdom.  The term was later\n applied to all the advisors who served later kings, despite the fact that many\n of them returned to their traditions in sorcery, witchcraft and astrology.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The term, "magi", however was\n principally used to define the wise men who came out of Daniel's "school\n of prophets" and these "magi" became the counselors, advisors,\n and ministers of varying degree.  Daniel, in his teaching and training of\n these wise men, acquainted them thoroughly with the Scriptures, and particularly\n the prophecies of the expected coming Messiah.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Every one of them knew the Scriptures\n intimately and knew the significance of the coming Messiah's birth, and His\n rank as "King of Kings."  Thus, despite the fact that more than\n four centuries had elapsed since Daniel's death, the magi continued to follow\n the prophecies and await the promised "signs in the heavens."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

As counselors and advisors and ministers to\n kings, these magi held great rank and privilege.  When they finally saw\n the first of the signs in the heavens foretelling the coming birth, they would\n have had the support and financing of royal treasuries to pay homage to this\n great king.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span>\n <\/o:p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Herod's fears notwithstanding, it was\n traditional practice in the east for kings to pay their respects one to another\n -- and generally with extravagant gifts and wealth.  These extravagant\n gifts were meant to display a picture of their own wealth and to signify to the\n recipient king their approval of him as one of them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There is a picture worth looking at for a\n minute in order to grasp the significance of this.  If you look at the\n account of the Queen of Sheba's visit to Solomon, you read (in II Chronicles\n 9:9), <\/span>"And\n she gave the king and hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great\n abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the queen\n of Sheba gave king Solomon."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There are a number of other accounts\n throughout the Old Testament of the gifts that kings brought to other kings, or\n sent via their trusted advisors, and there is good reason from Matthew's account\n of the magi to understand that these wise men came bearing similar honors.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\n <\/o:p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider the phraseology in Matthew 2:11<\/st1:bcv_smarttag>: <\/span>"...and when they had opened their treasures,\nthey presented unto Him gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh."<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b> The phrase which\nreads, "opened their treasures" in the Greek text uses a unique word\n-- and one that students of the English language have come to know well: <\/span>"thesauros<\/span>"<\/span><\/i><\/b> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Many folks are familiar with Roget's\nThesaurus, which is a vastly expanded dictionary with meanings and synonyms\nthat better define the words contained.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Greek <\/span>"thesauros<\/span>"<\/span><\/i><\/b> however, has an\ninteresting definition.  It describes "a vast deposit of\nwealth."  It draws, therefore, the picture of a camel train\naccompanying the wise men (it is safe to say that the number of wise men likely\nexceeded the traditional, religious picture of "three.") bearing a\nconsiderable burden of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Matthew's usage of\nthis word in describing what the magi brought to Jesus becomes apparent when we\nsee the picture of the gifts that the queen of Sheba brought to Solomon.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My current volume of Strong's Concordance\ncontains a table of weights, measures and monetary exchange values.  It\nlists the value of a "talent of gold" as being equal to a million\ndollars in today\u2019s American currency.  When you realize that she\nbrought to Solomon a hundred and twenty talents of gold, that amounted to $120\nMillion.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We don't have a record of how many talents\nof gold the magi brought to Jesus, but from Matthew's use of the word <\/span>"thesauros<\/span>",<\/span><\/i><\/b> it takes no great rocket science to\ndetermine that they brought to Jesus the equivalent of millions of\ndollars.  The silly picture foisted off on the body of Christ of a wise\nman carrying this little box containing perhaps a few coins of gold simply\ndoesn't match the Scriptural description.  Jesus began life as a VERY rich\nperson.  He was accorded the wealth and riches associated with a king.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Thus, we have the reference that the\n apostle Paul makes when he writes of Jesus, <\/span>"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus\n Christ, that, though he was rich<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>plousios<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/b>-- wealthy, abounding in goods), <\/i><\/b><\/span>yet for your sakes He\n became <\/span>(or took upon Himself poverty) poor, that ye through His poverty (on the\n Cross) might be rich."<\/span><\/span>  (II Corinthians 8:9, KJV<\/st1:translation_smarttag> with my notations)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus was indeed a very rich man.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We have one more picture from which we can\n draw the picture of Jesus being very well off.  In John 1:35-39<\/st1:bcv_smarttag>, we have the story of the two\ndisciples of John the Baptist who decide to follow Jesus.  When Jesus realizes\nthat they are following Him, he says to them,<\/span> "What are you\nseeking?"  <\/span>Their\nresponse is, <\/span>"Master (or Rabbi), where do you live?"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He answers them, <\/span>"Come\nand see,"<\/span>\nand then proceeds to take them to His home, where they wind up spending the\nremainder of the day and the night.  Jesus wasn't still living with His\nmother, Mary, contrary to another popular misconception.  He had a place\nof His own, and it was suitable for overnighting<\/span>\nguests.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

These disciples weren't just following\nJesus to find out where He lived, or if He owned a home.  They wanted to\nfind out if this "Lamb of God" was a man of substance.  He was,\nindeed, the polar opposite of His cousin, John the Baptist, who lived a pretty\nwild and "far out" life in the wilderness.  These disciples wanted\nto see if Jesus was someone they would want to follow, and His bringing of them\nto His home obviously resolved their question.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There are many more such pictures in the\nWord, but let's leave it there for now.  The economics of God's Kingdom\ncertainly did not avoid natural wealth and riches despite the claims of\nunbelievers who want to paint Jesus as some poverty-stricken "humble"\nperson.  Remember, Judas was not Jesus' treasurer for nothing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He didn't carry a bag containing a few\ncoins worth just enough in value to get them by.  Jesus had financial\nresources available to Him: the resources of a King.  That wealth enabled\nHim to have the freedom to travel and minister as He saw fit -- AND to take\ncare of the needs of those who <\/span>"forsook all and followed Him."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By putting Jesus first in every aspect of\nour lives, He becomes the focus, the priority, the objective and purpose of our\ndesire.  Our desire becomes His desire.  When that becomes the case,\nour entire daily life becomes a function of laying up treasure in Heaven's\ntreasuries -- and that treasure has an exchange value in earth's currencies far\nbeyond any exchange rate you can imagine.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus lacked for nothing during His life\nand ministry.  Yet He gave it all up and went to the Cross so that the\ncurse that kept the human race in poverty could be extinguished for all those\nwho walk in fellowship with Him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This is where we are about to see the\nfuture unfolding before us.\u00a0 <\/span>We have a\nCovenant promise that applies to those who live in, and according to, that\nCovenant.\u00a0 <\/span>Consider the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 
\n<\/u><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Deuteronomy\n 28:10-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\n <\/span>And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by\n the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee. And the LORD shall make\n thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy\n cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware<\/span> unto thy fathers to give thee. The LORD shall open\n unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his\n season, and to bless all the work of thine<\/span> hand: and\n thou shalt<\/span> lend unto many nations, and thou shalt<\/span> not borrow. And the LORD shall make thee the head,\n and not the tail; and thou shalt<\/span> be above only, and\n thou shalt<\/span> not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto\n the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe\n and to do them<\/i>: And thou shalt<\/span> not go aside\n from any of the words which I command thee this day, to<\/i> the right hand,\n or to<\/i> the left, to go after other gods to serve them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are you seeing it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1.      <\/span><\/span><\/span>All the people of\nthe earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord, and they\nshall be afraid of thee\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2.      <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Lord shall make\nthee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy\ncattle, and in the fruit of thy ground\u2026.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3.      <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Lord shall open\nunto thee His good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his\nseason, and to bless all the work of thine<\/span> hand\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4.      <\/span><\/span><\/span>And thou shalt<\/span> lend unto many nations, and thou shalt<\/span>\nnot borrow\u2026<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once again, I remind you that these\n promises are made to those who live in the Covenant!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Have you ever \u2013 even in your wildest\nimagination \u2013 thought that you could be the lender and NOT the borrower?\u00a0 <\/span>Has it ever dawned in your consciousness that\nyou could be in a position to lend to many nations?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do you understand the significance of being\n\u201cthe head and not the tail?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>No?\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s what I thought.\u00a0 <\/span>Being the \u201chead\u201d means that you are in charge\nof what is taking place governmentally, corporately and socially instead of\nbeing subservient to those in charge.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Well, folks, THAT is exactly what God has\nin store for His people!\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve already\nseen the beginning of this with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency,\nbut, buckle your seatbelts!\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re about\nto see God\u2019s people elevated to positions of authority in many, many, many\nplaces.\u00a0 <\/span>You are about to see a transfer\nof wealth to God\u2019s people on a scale that makes the transfer of wealth from\nEgypt to the children of Israel pale by comparison.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I remind you of the promise that God made\nin Proverbs 13:22:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\ngood man<\/i> leaveth<\/span> an inheritance to his\nchildren\u2019s children: and the wealth of the sinner is<\/i> laid up for the\njust.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again, however, I remind you that these\npromises are not made to Christians in general, but to those who walk in\nCovenant with the Lord and understand the significance of what it means to walk\nin that place of Covenant.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A new future for God\u2019s people is unfolding\nin front of us.\u00a0 <\/span>If you are not walking\nin the Covenant, I\u2019d suggest that you get in that place pronto!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
