ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 15<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK. We've spent the last three weeks on what it means to be the\nsalt of the earth. Now it\u2019s time to get on with what it means to be the light\nof the world. Once again, here\u2019s how it reads in the KJV:<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew\n5:13-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span><\/b>Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour<\/span>, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth\ngood for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill\ncannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on\na candlestick; and it giveth<\/span> light unto all that are\nin the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your\ngood works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Since\nwe\u2019ve pretty much covered the first part of this statement, let\u2019s move on to\nthe amplified and re-translated portion of this passage:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[When I said, \u201cLight be,\u201d that was the light that brought this\nworld into being. I AM that light.] (Because you are in me, and I AM in you,\nyou are \u2014 likewise \u2014 the light of this world. That is a light one cannot hide.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

[As representatives of the New Jerusalem] you are like that City\nwhich is elevated on a high hill or mountain and cannot be hidden from view.\n(You have been made and destined to be visible to this world.)<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(Matthew 5:14, RAC\nTranslation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No one lights a candle, and then hides it under some kind of\ncovering or utensil. Rather, they put the candle on some kind of lampstand<\/span> or decorative piece in order to elevate it so as\nto give light to the whole room.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let that light (My light) which is in you, therefore, radiate\nbrilliantly in front of all men and women so that the value of your\nrelationship with and in Me \u2014 manifested in the works, the signs and wonders \u2014\nis demonstrated. That, in turn, will cause Father in Heaven to receive glory\nand honor and praise!<\/span>(Matthew\n5:15-16, RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider,\nnow, how John described Jesus and how His appearance impacted society:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John\n1:5, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And the light shineth<\/span> in darkness; and\nthe darkness comprehended it not.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nlook at how the Greek text really puts it:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the light appeared in the midst of the darkness, exposing\neverything previously obscured to view; and the darkness was incapable of\nseizing, possessing and overwhelming it. (The darkness couldn\u2019t even understand\nthe nature, character or makeup of that light).<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(John 1:5, RAC\nTranslation and Amplification)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nfor a moment, the inability of physical darkness to deal with even the\nslightest amount of light. Step into a closet, close the door, and unless the\ntop, sides and bottom of the door have rubber seals to absolutely block out any\nincoming light, even a slight crack at the bottom or sides will allow you to\nsee even dimly in the closet. In order to illustrate what we are talking about\nwith light and darkness, let me share a story with you. This is a bit long, and\nit gets into a lot of areas, but it highlights precisely where we are going\nwith this discussion on the significance of our being the light of the world,\nand the inability of the natural world to understand and comprehend the\ndimension in which we live.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Let me explain the problem science has with\nreligion." The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and\nthen asks one of his new students to stand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'You're a Christian, aren't you, son?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes sir,' the student says.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'So you believe in God?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Absolutely '<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Is God good?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Sure! God's good.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Are you good or evil?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'The Bible says I'm evil.'<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The professor grins knowingly. 'Aha! The Bible! He considers for\na moment. 'Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and\nyou can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?'<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes sir, I would.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'So you're good...!'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'I wouldn't say that.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if\nyou could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. 'He\ndoesn't, does He? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he\nprayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Can you answer that one?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student remains silent. 'No, you can't, can you?' the\nprofessor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the\nstudent time to relax.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Let's start again, young fella<\/span>. Is\nGod good?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Er<\/span>..yes,' the student says.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Is Satan good?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student doesn't hesitate on this one.. 'No.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Then where does Satan come from?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student falters. 'From God.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there\nevil in this world?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes, sir.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything,\ncorrect?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'So who created evil?' The professor continued, 'If God created\neverything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the\nprinciple that our works define who we are, then God is evil.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again, the student has no answer.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these\nterrible things, do they exist in this world?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student squirms on his feet. 'Yes.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'So who created them ?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his\nquestion. 'Who created them?' There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer\nbreaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Tell me,' he continues onto another student. 'Do you believe in\nJesus Christ, son?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student's voice betrays him and cracks. 'Yes, professor, I\ndo.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The old man stops pacing. 'Science says you have five senses you\nuse to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'No sir. I've never seen Him.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'No, sir, I have not.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your\nJesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for\nthat matter?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yet you still believe in him?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable\nprotocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Nothing,' the student replies. 'I only have my faith.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem\nscience has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a\nquestion of His own. 'Professor, is there such thing as heat? '<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

' Yes.\u2019<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'And is there such a thing as cold?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes, son, there's cold too.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'No sir, there isn't.'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested.\nThe room suddenly becomes very quiet.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The student begins to explain.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat,\nmega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't\nhave anything called 'cold'. We can get down to 458 degrees below zero, which\nis no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as\ncold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Every body<\/span> or object is susceptible to study when it has or\ntransmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit\nenergy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold\nis only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold.\nHeat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the\nopposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom,\nsounding like a hammer.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as\ndarkness?'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation. 'What is night\nif it isn't darkness?'<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the\nabsence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light,\nflashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's\ncalled darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In\nreality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker,\nwouldn't you?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

'<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him.\nThis will be a good semester.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nknow you're looking at me cross-eyed, wondering where this is going, but bear\nwith me. We'll finish the story and wrap this up next week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
