ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: SUPERNATURAL MATURITY, Part 13<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Good Morning! Gotta<\/span> share a recent\nevent that took place as an illustration of our continuing study of what it\nmeans to be "the salt of the earth."<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A couple weeks back, our daughter, Shelley, stopped in to see us\nand brought a friend of hers (whom I will call "Arlene" for the sake\nof this discussion). Arlene had pretty obviously been through the mill and had\nbeen battered emotionally, mentally, spiritually -- and possibly even\nphysically. Drugs and alcohol had played a big role in recent years and the\ndestruction of the Enemy showed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless, at some time in her past she had been exposed to\nthe Gospel and had at least made some kind of mental assent to the claims of\nthe Lord Jesus Christ. When Shelley and Arlene walked in the front door, they\nwere scarcely through the living room and into the dining room when Arlene\nbegan to cry. She said, "The peace in this house is unbelievable! I've\nnever felt anything like this. There are angels in this place."<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Shelley had brought her friend over so she could shower and\nclean up, and Della told her to help herself. After a lengthy period, she\nfinally came out of the shower and sat down on one of the bar stools in our\nkitchen. She continued to struggle with her composure and kept reiterating that\nshe'd never felt anything like what she was feeling.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It gave Della and me a perfect opportunity to share with her,\nand Holy Spirit gave us some direct words of knowledge about her that we were\nable to utilize in ministering to her. The occasion was ready-made by the Lord.\nArlene had never actually accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, but she\nreadily prayed with us and wept buckets as she invited Jesus Christ to take\nover her life. The glow of His presence was all over her as she left with\nShelley later that afternoon.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It was a perfect illustration of what happens when we are in\nChrist, and He is in us. The saltiness of God's presence so affected the\natmosphere that even though this perfect stranger -- Arlene -- had never met us\nand knew nothing about us, other than the fact that we were Shelley's parents,\nit brought change and the savor of the Lord into this young woman.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It's not unlike the story of the FedEx driver I shared with you\nnot that long ago who had this startled look on his face when he visibly saw an\nangel standing behind me when he answered the door. We can't help but chuckle\nover the fact that he still reacts that way when he comes to the door with his\npackages, glancing up over my shoulder to see if the angel is still visible.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

OK,\ntime to get back to our discussion. Here again is the amplification to Matthew\n5:13-16.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"In the same way that salt personifies the need for\nseasoning, restraint and protection from spoilage or rotting, and preparation\nfor soil to produce; in the same way that salt represents wisdom and grace in\none\u2019s speech and behavior, you are that grace and wisdom, that seasoning and\nprotection for the world.  You are that which restrains and holds back the\nexecution of my judgment upon a world corrupted, spoiling and decaying in sin.\nIf you lose the ability to season and influence the world around, you lose your\nusefulness [to the Kingdom] and, like salt that has lost its ability to make\nthings palatable, and winds up being thrown out, you become worthless [to the\nKingdom] and cease to have (spiritual) value, requiring that you be cast\naside."<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(Matthew 5:13, RAC\nTranslation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

"[When I said, \u201cLight be,\u201d that was the light that brought\nthis world into being. I AM that light.] (Because you are in me, and I AM in\nyou, you are \u2014 likewise \u2014 the light of this world. That is a light one cannot\nhide.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"[As representatives of the New Jerusalem] you are like\nthat City which is elevated on a high hill or mountain and cannot be hidden\nfrom view. (You have been made and destined to be visible to this world.)"<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(Matthew 5:14, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

"No one lights a candle, and then hides it under some kind\nof covering or utensil. Rather, they put the candle on some kind of lampstand<\/span> or decorative piece in order to elevate it so as\nto give light to the whole room.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Let that light (My light) which is in you, therefore,\nradiate brilliantly in front of all men and women so that the value of your\nrelationship with and in Me \u2014 manifested in the works, the signs and wonders \u2014\nis demonstrated. That, in turn, will cause Father in Heaven to receive glory\nand honor and praise!"<\/span>(Matthew 5:15-16, RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let's\ntake a different approach to the concept of being the salt of the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In\nGenesis 18 and 19, we have the story of Abraham pleading with the Lord\nconcerning the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. God tells Abraham that His\nintention is to destroy the cities because their sin is \u201cvery grievous.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nHebrew text uses the word, <\/span>kabad<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span><\/b> to describe the\nweight of their sin and its impact on the region.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

These\ntwo cities resided in the \u201cVale of Siddim<\/span>.\u201d That\ntranslates to \u201cthe Valley of Salt.\u201d These two cities were supposed to be \u201csalt\u201d\nin the region \u2014 an influence for good. Instead, they had become the epitome of\nall that is evil and wicked in the earth. Their \u201csalt\u201d had become perversion of\nevery kind and God would no longer tolerate it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Consider\nAbraham\u2019s plea. In cities numbering an estimated population of more than 50,000\npeople each, Abraham \u2014 understanding the significance of the righteous as salt\nto preserve those cities \u2014 began with 50 righteous in asking God if He would\ndestroy the cities were there 50 righteous. God agreed with Abraham that if 50\nrighteous were to be found between the two cities, it would suffice to keep\nthem from being wiped off the map.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Abraham\ntook it step after step after step until he reduced it to ten righteous \u2014 five\nfor each city, or one righteous person for 10,000 wicked. God promised him that\nif there were even ten righteous found among the two cities, He would preserve them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis\n19:24 makes clear that He did not! We are told that He<\/span> <\/span>\u201coverthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the\ninhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Talk\nabout destruction! The destruction with fire and brimstone so reduced the area\nto ash that absolutely <\/span>nothing<\/span><\/i><\/b> has been able\nto live there ever since. In 1987 and 1988, a friend by the name of Henry\nGruver accompanied the archaeologist, Ron Wyatt, as he surveyed the area and\nfound that the ash remains as a kind of burned salt \u2014 and it is the only place\non the planet where that kind of ash exists! The brimstone produced a valley of\nsalt unlike any anywhere else in the world.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nmakes this so fascinating to me is the fact that this fits exactly what Jesus\nwas saying, <\/span>\u201cif the salt have lost his savour<\/span>,\nwherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be\ncast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\n\u201csalt\u201d of Sodom and Gomorrah had long since ceased to have the savor that God\nwanted for the land. It became \u201cgood for nothing.\u201d In order to demonstrate to\nthe land \u2014 and to the world of that day \u2014 just how critical our role is in\nseasoning and making the area around us palatable to the Lord (and I\u2019ll address\nthis more, momentarily) and how abominable these cities were to the region, God\nsent fire and brimstone to rain down upon those cities of the Valley of Salt\nand render their salt worthless for all time!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Ever\nwonder why God considers it so important for us to be palatable and to make the\nworld around us palatable to Him? One only has to go back to Creation to see\nthat the world and all that God created were nothing but perfect.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Genesis 1:31a<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And God\nsaw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was<\/i> very\ngood.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nHebrew word translated \u201cvery\u201d in this passage is the word, me<\/sup>\u00f2d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis a vehemence in this word, indicating that everything was finished to\nperfection. The world wasn\u2019t simply palatable to God, it met His definition\nof <\/span>\u201cfinished, complete, whole, perfect!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nAdam ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and brought sin into\nCreation, it was no longer palatable to God. The smell and taste of the Earth\nhad become corrupted. It smelled rotten because of Satan\u2019s presence and\ninfluence, and tasted even worse!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In\n1996, when the Lord enabled me to travel backward and forward in time, and I\nwas transported into the Garden of Eden, the beauty was indescribable. It was\nstunning! But there was more.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nwas a fragrance to the Garden that I have only smelled a very few times in my\nlife when that presence of the Lord flooded the atmosphere where I was. There\nwas a peace and a quiet that the world of today does not know. That peace and\nquiet was punctuated by the sounds of birds singing or chirping musically \u2014\nharmonically. Their sounds were not discordant or strident.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Eating\nof the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil changed all that! It seems\nstrange that a single act like that could bring such corruption, but David\nexpresses it quite succinctly in the Psalms when he writes:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Psalm 115:16<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>The\nHeaven, even the heavens, are the Lord\u2019s: but the earth hath He given to the\nchildren of men.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nbrings us back to the origins of that rulership<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Genesis 1:26-28<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And God\nsaid, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have\ndominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the\ncattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth<\/span> upon the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So God created man in his own<\/i> image, in the\nimage of God created he him; male and female created he them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and\nmultiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the\nfish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that\nmoveth<\/span> upon the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

God\nhad given man absolute dominion over the earth and everything in it. With\nAdam\u2019s disobedience, there was a consequence. That consequence was death.\nNothing about God\u2019s Creation was ever designed to corrupt and\/or die.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

If\nthe DNA of humans, plants, animals, birds, fish, etc., is corrupted so that it\nnow begins to break down and die, there is a rottenness and a stink that comes\nwith it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Salt\ngreatly slows the breakdown. Salt will, in some cases, eliminate the odor of\nspoilage. Salt changes the flavor and causes things that might otherwise not be\npalatable or edible to be consumed easily and tastily.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

When\nGod covenanted with Israel, therefore, His covenant with them was a Covenant of\nSalt. They were to make the earth tolerable to Him. They were to be the\nseasoning in the earth that provided seasoning to those peoples and nations\nthat didn\u2019t yet know Him. He required the priests and Levites to add salt to\nthe sacrifices as a symbol of the necessity of their restoring what had been\nlost.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

At\nthe same time, He required that the priests offer up incense in order to make\nthe fragrance of the earth around them \u201ca sweet-smelling savor\u201d to Him. Each\nsacrifice and each offering had an enormous spiritual significance which\nrelated back to God\u2019s original Creation, the dominion which had been given to\nman, and the corruption that came into the earth as a result of sin. Each\nsacrifice and each offering was designed as a prophetic symbol of the\nredemptive plan in which each aspect of Creation would be restored. No\noffering, and no sacrifice, was offered without salt. Salt was a symbol of the\ncoming redemption.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Now,\nlet\u2019s return to Jesus\u2019 statement:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In the same way that salt personifies the need for seasoning,\nrestraint and protection from spoilage or rotting, and preparation for soil to\nproduce; in the same way that salt represents wisdom and grace in one\u2019s speech\nand behavior, you are that grace and wisdom, that seasoning and protection for\nthe world.  You are that which restrains and holds back the execution of\nmy judgment upon a world corrupted, spoiling and decaying in sin.<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(Matthew 5:13a RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This\nmay seem like a deviation from our sharing, thus far, (and what I\u2019m about to\nshare may fly in the face of some traditional doctrines) but consider something\nthat Paul wrote to the Ekklesia<\/span> in Thessalonica:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

II Thessalonians 2:3-7<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Let no\nman deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come<\/i>, except\nthere come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of\nperdition; Who opposeth<\/span> and exalteth<\/span>\nhimself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth<\/span> in the temple of God, showing himself that he is\nGod. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these\nthings? And now ye know what withholdeth<\/span> that he\nmight be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already\nwork: only he who now letteth<\/span> will let<\/i>,\nuntil he be taken out of the way.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee that word, \u201cletteth<\/span>\u201d? That\u2019s an archaic English\nword which, in today\u2019s usage, means the exact opposite. The word in the\noriginal Greek text is, katecho<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This\nword means, <\/span>to restrain, to hold back, to hinder, to hold fast<\/span>. Get it? So who is\ndoing the restraining? Who is doing the preserving? Who is hindering the\nfull-blown rottenness and decay in society and in the world? Right! You\u2019ve got\nit! The salt of the earth! The people of God who, as Daniel so appropriately\nputs it:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Daniel 11:32b<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>But the\npeople that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits<\/i>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nmeans that those people will truly season, add savor, and alter the status quo\nin the earth the way they are supposed to. We have been commanded to be the\nsalt of Heaven in the earth. We have been commissioned to be God\u2019s salt to\nrestrain, to hold back, to preserve this earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

We\nhave been commanded and commissioned to season the societies that live therein\nuntil the day our role as salt has completed that purpose. That role can never\nbe minimized or degraded, or else we suffer the consequence of losing our \u201csaltness<\/span>,\u201d and cease to fulfill the destiny He has set\nbefore us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Obviously,\nwe never got to the second part of Jesus\u2019 statement concerning our being the\nlight of the world. That\u2019s where we will pick this up in our next Coffee Break.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
