ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: A REVELATION OF GOD'S GLORY, Part 6<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

September 18, 2015<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So far in the past week, we've laid the foundation for\nunderstanding a fundamental principle of our relationship with the Lord in the\npicture of being literally created for him.  Just as Eve was taken out of\nAdam's side -- and Jesus is referred to as "the Last Adam" -- we also\nhave been literally taken out of Jesus' side.  We will get into this\npicture more, possibly today, and maybe not until next week, but let's return\nto the prophetic cry of the Lord as it was given by Jeremiah.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nwrapped up last week by saying that when Jeremiah delivered his prophetic Word\nto Israel, the Lord was literally crying out because of the search that was\ngoing on for His people, desiring to be joined once again to that special\npeople He had chosen for Himself.  They were the reciprocal of the Lord in\nthe earth -- and they had gone astray, seeking after other gods.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider,\nthen, the prophetic parable that Jesus shares in the 25th Chapter of Matthew as\nhe talks about the ten virgins.  In this parable, the ten virgins are\nsupposed to be a picture of a people prepared as a bride-to-be and betrothed to\nthe Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 25:1-12<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins,\nwhich took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.  And five\nof them were wise, and five were<\/i> foolish.  They\nthat were<\/i> foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with\nthem:  But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. \nWhile the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom\ncometh; go ye out to meet him.  Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed\ntheir lamps.  And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for\nour lamps are gone out.  But the wise answered, saying, Not so<\/i>;\nlest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell,\nand buy for yourselves.  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came;\nand they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was\nshut. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open\nto us.  But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you\nnot.   Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour\nwherein the Son of man cometh.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before\nwe get too far into this parable, let's define some terms used here in the KJV\nas "wise" and "foolish" from the Greek words used in the\noriginal text.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nword used to describe the "wise" virgins is the Greek, <\/span>phronimos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, and it comes from a\nroot word, <\/span>phren<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, which means: <\/span>to rein\nin, to curb, to discipline one's minds and feelings<\/span><\/u><\/b>.  The\nword, <\/span>phronimos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, by extension, means: <\/span>to be\nthoughtful, discreet, cautious and practical<\/span><\/u><\/b>.  There's a\nwhole lot here in this description of the "wise" virgins, and we'll\nbreak this out momentarily.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\ncontrast to "wise," the Greek uses the term, <\/span>moros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  We get our\nEnglish word, "moron," from this term, but its true definition\nis: <\/span>thoughtless, imprudent, without forethought or wisdom; empty,\nuseless<\/span><\/u><\/b>. \nJ. H. Thayer adds to this definition, <\/span>one who thinks he can\noperate outside of God's wisdom; one who neglects and\/or despises the<\/span><\/i> <\/span>sozo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>offered<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK,\nso far?  Good!  Then, let's put these terms in the context of Jesus'\nparable.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nwas it that defined the "wise virgins?"  Let's see if we can\nenumerate what the Bridegroom was looking for in His betrothed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b> \nThey had their lamps lit, and an ample supply of oil.  Throughout the\nWord, the lamps have been a picture of passion and pursuit of\nrelationship.  In Psalm 119:105, David makes the statement, "<\/span>Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.<\/span>"  That\npassion with God tells you where you are with Him, and it lets you know (by\nrevelation) where you are going with Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\noil is a picture of the anointing that comes by and through Holy Spirit. \nOne does not come by that anointing carelessly and heedlessly.  It comes\nby being in His presence -- NOT occasionally, NOT when one just feels like it,\nNOT because you want something from Him -- because you love Him.  You WANT\nto be with Him.  You desire to KNOW Him.  You crave what He\nwants.  Your purpose is to know His very heartbeat, to feel what He\nfeels.  Your aim is to be everything that fulfills Him, everything that\ncompletes Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b> \nThe ample supply of oil -- the extra beyond what was needed for the moment --\nindicates that the "wise virgins" were prepared for the possibility\nthat the Bridegroom might not come when they expected Him, and that they could\nnot allow their passion and pursuit of His presence to wane during any\npotential delay.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>There is an\nextraordinary aspect of this extra oil that often gets missed in the \nreading of Jesus' parable.  That oil cost them dearly!  It cost them\n-- in many instances -- their reputation, their occupations, their friends,\ntheir resources ..... all that might have been dear to them in the\nnatural!  One thing they absolutely had been required to set aside was\ntheir plans, their reasoning, their thoughts, their doctrines and ideas. \nThey had come to the place where it just didn't matter what it cost them;\nhaving the Bridegroom's heart, having His best wasn't just important: it\nsurpassed every other consideration! <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(4)  <\/span><\/b>When the announcing cry sounded, "<\/span>Behold the Bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet Him<\/span>," the Greek\ntext uses the term, <\/span>kosmeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, to describe the\nvirgins "trimming" their lamps.  In fact, this term, <\/span>kosmeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, literally\nmeans: <\/span>to put in proper order, to decorate (both literally and\nfiguratively), to garnish, to adorn<\/span><\/u><\/b>.  [We get our modern English\nword, cosmetics, from this Greek word.]<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again\nwe get a picture of the "wise virgins" who put their lamps and the\nburning flame "in proper order," who "adorned and\ngarnished" themselves with their passion for the Bridegroom.  You\nsee, they were ready for Him!  They may have nodded off in the delay\nincurred before His coming but they knew He was glorious; every fiber and cell\nof their existence and preparation for Him was that they would be an adornment\nfor that Glory.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I've\nprobably just scratched the surface of this so far, but let's consider the\n"foolish virgins."  Remember the Greek term that describes\nthem?  <\/span>Moros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  Thoughtless, imprudent, without\nforethought or wisdom.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b> \nThe sad commentary on these virgins is that they were virgins.  They\nstarted off right!  They had been seen by the Bridegroom as someone\ndesirable, someone with potential, someone with a destiny who could be a part\nof His destiny, someone in whom there was passion and desire.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nproblem was not in how they started, but the fact that they were so sidetracked\nby their preconceived notions of when and how He would return for them that\nthey failed to spend the requisite time in His presence to really get to KNOW\nHim, His heart, His desires, His plans, His purposes.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b> \nThese five "foolish virgins" actually started off with oil. \nTheir lamps were lit.  They displayed a passionate love for the\nBridegroom.  [Let me draw an analogy here that some folks may take issue\nwith.]  As we have noted, the oil is a picture of the anointing that comes\nthrough and by Holy Spirit.  It comes by being in His  presence.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfive "foolish virgins" yielded themselves to what we have come to\nknow as "the baptism of the Holy Spirit."  They experienced the\ninitial flow as Holy Spirit took their yielded tongues and began to speak\nthrough them with the tongues and languages of men and of angels.  The\nproblem was that they stopped there.  They treated the experience as a\ngoal or an objective to be reached in their preparatory walk with the Lord\ninstead of a gateway to intimacy.  They received enough oil in their lamps\nto have a flame burning with passionate love.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b>  Ephesians\n5:17-20<\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>Wherefore be ye not\nunwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is<\/i>.  \nAnd be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the\nSpirit;  Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,\nsinging and making melody in your heart to the Lord;  Giving thanks always\nfor all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Reading\nthe above passage in Greek can be a hilarious experience, but let me focus on\nthe express verbiage in the second half of verse 18, <\/span>but be filled with the Spirit<\/span>!  The Greek text looks like\nthis: <\/span>Plerousqe<\/span><\/span> en Pneumati<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>  Literally\ntranslated, it becomes, <\/span>Be being (continually)\nfilled and furnished in and by (Holy) Spirit<\/span>.  I'll continue with this\ntranslation and amplification momentarily, but there's no such thing as a\none-time experience of being filled with Holy Spirit.  This is a\ncontinuing daily, moment-by-moment, hour-by-hour experience.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Baptism\nin the Holy Spirit is an initial immersion which takes place when we yield our\ntongues over to His control.  He begins speaking through us with words and\nlanguages that go far beyond our learning and natural reasoning.  He shuts\ndown our minds so that we are not partaking of the Tree of the Knowledge of\nGood and Evil, and causes us to begin eating of the Tree of Life and drinking\nfrom the River of Life.  Our minds may be going a hundred miles a minute,\nbut what is coming out of our mouths has absolutely nothing whatever to do with\nwhatever is going through our minds.  It becomes a gateway to being\ncontinually filled and experiencing a dimension of intimacy with the Lord that\nis not available any other way.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I've\nsaid all of that to say this: the "foolish virgins" failed to keep\nfilling their vessels with the oil of the Spirit.  They never really got\nto KNOW the Bridegroom.  He was a figurehead in their life, a goal to be\nachieved, a future provider and source of provision, but not someone to know\nand be known by at the level of the  Spirit.  The concept of what it\nwould cost them to be in that place of continually being filled was foreign.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme take just a bit more of Ephesians 5 before we move on.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Where\nour English translations render the word <\/span>lalountes<\/span><\/span> (<\/span>lalountes<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> -- fromlaleo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>) as "speaking," in\nfact the proper word in the Greek to use if we want to render this as "<\/span>articulate,\nreasoned, thought-out speaking<\/span><\/u><\/b>" should have beenlegountes<\/span><\/span><\/span> (<\/span>legountes<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> -- from lego<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>).  The difference here is\nthat the word lego<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> isarticulate<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/span><\/span> speech<\/span><\/u><\/b>, whereas the actual\nword used, laleo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nmeans: <\/span>to utter a sound, to use the tongue or the faculty of speech<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nyou're looking at me cross-eyed, thinking, what difference does this\nmake<\/i>, let's be  clear!  If I articulate words to you, I'm\nspeaking out of forethought.  My words are planned.  I have reasoned\nout what needs to be said.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

On\nthe other hand, if I'm just making sounds, what comes out is what Episcopal\nRector, Dennis Bennett, referred to in his book, <\/span>NINE O'CLOCK IN THE\nMORNING<\/span><\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>as glossolalia<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span> describing his experience of being baptized\nin the Holy Spirit.  They are words, all right, but they are words NOT\nformed from my forethought or reasoning: they are words in languages that I\nknow nothing about.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nPaul is saying, therefore, is this: "speaking (or singing) to yourselves\nin Psalms (the praise or worship or intercession) written (mostly) by David,\n[that which has already been set forth as music with words], hymns (NOT what we\nhave referred to as "hymns" from the hymnal) -- repetitive,\ncelebratory short songs or phrases, and spiritual songs [supernatural,\nspirit-driven, divine utterances], singing and making melody (the Greek term\nis, psallo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nwhich means to pluck or strum on a stringed instrument) in your heart (the\nGreek phraseology here is to agree in your mind with what is coming forth by\nthe Spirit) to the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let's\nsee if we can assemble all of this in a cohesive sentence:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Don't be intoxicated with wine, but intoxicate yourself with the\nSpirit, being continually filled and furnished [saturated and satiated] in and\nwith Holy Spirit, freely allowing your tongue to become His vessel in speaking\nand singing to yourself the Psalms, celebratory, repetitive short songs and\nphrases, and supernaturally given, Spirit-driven, divine utterances, singing\nand playing upon an instrument, agreeing in your mind with what Holy Spirit is\nuttering [beyond your natural abilities or learning].<\/span>  (Ephesians\n5:17-18, RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

THAT,\nfolks, is how the five wise virgins kept their passionate and fiery love alive\nfor the Bridegroom.  THAT is how they had an ample supply of the oil of\nthe Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There's\none other factor that I will touch on briefly, here, but we will dig into it\nmore next week.  The oil that was used in the lamps, as well as the oil in\nthe Golden Candlestick in the Tabernacle of Moses, was an oil which came from a\ncrushing process.  It is a picture of the crushing that takes place in\nthose who have the oil of the Spirit.  That crushing is necessary in us to\nget rid of all of our carnality so that the Glory of the Lord can be revealed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\npicture has a lot to it, and it is germane to the cry of the Lord as revealed\nin Jeremiah's prophecy, so let's stop here and pick it up next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
