ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: A REVELATION OF GOD'S GLORY, Part 7<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Last week we talked about the ten virgins in Matthew 25. \nWe dealt mostly with the five wise, their passion for the Bridegroom, and the\noil of anointing that fed the flame of their love.  There's more, and\nwe'll come back to the five wise in a bit, but let's talk about the five\nfoolish and why they were rejected when they came back after trying to\n"buy" more oil for their lamps.  Here again is the parable as\nJesus shared it.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 25:1-12<\/span><\/u><\/b>:  <\/span>Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which\ntook their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.  And five of them\nwere wise, and five were<\/i> foolish.  They that were<\/i> foolish\ntook their lamps, and took no oil with them:  But the wise took oil in\ntheir vessels with their lamps.  While the bridegroom tarried, they all\nslumbered and slept.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom\ncometh; go ye out to meet him.  Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed\ntheir lamps.  And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for\nour lamps are gone out.  But the wise answered, saying, Not so<\/i>;\nlest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell,\nand buy for yourselves.  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came;\nand they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was\nshut. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open\nto us.  But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you\nnot.   Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour\nwherein the Son of man cometh.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once\nagain, here is how the word in the Greek text defines the foolish virgins:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreek word, <\/span>moros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, <\/span><\/i><\/b>brings to\nmind the English term, "moron," (and that IS where our English word\ncomes from) which if frequently used colloquially to refer to someone who lacks\nintelligence, (e.g., an idiot) or someone who offends our sensibilities with\ntotally illogical behavior<\/span>.  In fact the true definition of <\/span>moros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> is:thoughtless<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/span><\/span>,\nimprudent, without forethought or wisdom; empty, useless<\/span><\/u><\/b>.  J. H. Thayer\ncaptures the real essence of how this word occurs in the Word like this: <\/span>one who\nthinks he can operate outside of God's wisdom; one who neglects and\/or despises\nthe<\/span><\/i> <\/span>sozo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>offered<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nis important to recognize that the foolish virgins were among those chosen for\nconsideration among the Bride.  There was real potential in them. \nThey were beautiful to look upon.  They showed passion.  Their\nappearance was chaste and their behavior to this point had been discreet and\nprudent.  So what happened?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(1)<\/span><\/b> \nLike so many believers today, they became entangled with the affairs of this\nlife.  The Bridegroom delayed His coming.  They got their focus on\ntheir own care, their livelihood and the ongoing events of each day.  I\nbelieve that (and this is strictly an opinion) the Fear of Death overtook\nthem.  Why do I say that?  The oil necessary to keep their lamps lit,\ntheir passion alive and burning, comes with a huge cost.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(2)<\/span><\/b> \nThat cost comes in the form of what we know as crushing.  The picture of\nthe oil in the Word -- both Old Testament and New Testament -- is an oil\nderived by a crushing process.  Great pressure is applied.  The Greek\nword for pressure is <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  This is a\nword which Paul uses often in his letters.  In his letter to the\nColossians, Paul rejoices in the sufferings he is enduring, stating that there\nwas a necessity for him (and us, by analogy) to gain the anointing of the Lord\nJesus Christ by "<\/span>filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions<\/span>." \n(Colossians 1:24)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nword, "afflictions," in the Greek text is, <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  This is the\nsame word that Jesus used when He said, "<\/span>These\nthings have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.  In the\nworld ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer: I have overcome the\nworld.<\/span>" \n(John 16:33)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nActs 14:21-22, we are told: <\/span>And when they had\npreached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra<\/span>, and to<\/i> Iconium<\/span>,\nand Antioch,  Confirming the souls of the disciples, and<\/i> exhorting\nthem to continue in the faith, and that we must through much\ntribulation enter into the kingdom of God<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\nagain is the same picture.  Get it?  We MUST through much <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> enter into the\nKingdom of God!  The ten virgins absolutely HAD TO keep their lamps lit\nwith that oil of anointing that comes through <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nkind of pressure costs!  The five wise virgins paid dearly for the oil\nthat kept their lamps burning.  They paid with false accusations against\nthem.  They paid with their reputations being sullied by "the accuser\nof the brethren."  They paid with their lives being put in danger\nfrom time to time.  They paid with the betrayal of friends and would-be\nbelievers who turned their back on them as being fanatics.  Their devotion\nto their betrothed Bridegroom was treated as "over the edge."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis one other thing that comes with paying the kind of price necessary for that\nanointing oil: revelation!  John opens up the book of Revelation by\ndeclaring that it was "<\/span>the Revelation of Jesus\nChrist<\/span>." \nWe'll talk more about this momentarily, but with the price that the five wise\nvirgins paid, there came an ongoing and continuing revelation of their coming\nBridegroom.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(3)<\/span><\/b> \nThe five foolish virgins simply could not endure that kind of <\/span>thlipsis<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  They\nsuccumbed to the Fear of Death and to the Fear of Man.  When faced with\nthat kind of cost, when faced with the loss of friends and reputation, when\nfaced with their lives being endangered and being put under attack, the\ncrushing ceased.  They stopped producing the oil necessary to keep the\nflame of their passion alive.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nagain the definition of <\/span>moros<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>: <\/span>thoughtless,\nimprudent, without forethought or wisdom; empty, useless<\/span><\/u><\/b>.  The five\nfoolish virgins did not consider the costs, and did not weigh the benefits of\npaying the cost.  They were imprudent.  They were without forethought\nor wisdom.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(4)  <\/span><\/b>We looked at this last week, and here\nit is again.  When the cry sounded, "<\/span>Behold\nthe Bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet Him<\/span>," the Greek text uses the\nterm, <\/span>kosmeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, to describe the virgins\n"trimming" their lamps.  In fact, this term, <\/span>kosmeo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, literally\nmeans: <\/span>to put in proper order, to decorate (both literally and\nfiguratively), to garnish, to adorn<\/span><\/u><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfive foolish virgins were in disarray and sudden panic.  No oil.  No\nflame burning.  They were in relative spiritual darkness.  They had\nno revelation of the coming Bridegroom.  The only thing they were aware of\nwas that He was going to come.  What He was coming for in a prepared\nBride-to-be was lost in their consciousness.  They were literally without\nthe means to put themselves in proper order or to adorn themselves as a ready\nBride.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

(5)  <\/span><\/b>Here's the tragedy of this\npicture.  By having NOT paid the cost to have the oil that would keep\ntheir flame alive, their actions demonstrated that they were empty and\nuseless.  It defies any kind of reason or rational thinking that they\nwould have gone to the five wise virgins and said, "<\/span>Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out<\/span>."  Duhhh<\/span> .....  Riiiggghhhttt<\/span>!! \n"Let us piggy-back on your anointing.  Allow us to skate by without\nhaving paid the price."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nanswer of the five wise was careful and judicious: <\/span>Not so<\/span><\/i>; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to\nthem that sell, and buy for yourselves.<\/span> <\/span>Why of course! \nThe irony in this statement is inescapable!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nwhat it cost them to have their oil.  That oil was not available in the\nmarketplace!  It wasn't something one could go and spend money for and get\nacross the counter.  It was tantamount to Simon the Sorcerer's request to\nPeter.  Remember?  Acts 8 gives us the following picture.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Acts 8:5-24<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span>  Then Philip went\ndown to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.  And the\npeople with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake<\/span>, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. \nFor unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were\npossessed with them<\/i>: and many taken with palsies, and that were\nlame, were healed.  And there was great joy in that city.  But there\nwas a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used\nsorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some\ngreat one:  To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest,\nsaying, This man is the great power of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had\nbewitched them with sorceries.  But when they believed Philip preaching the\nthings concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were\nbaptized, both men and women.  Then Simon himself believed also: and when\nhe was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles\nand signs which were done.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria\nhad received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:  Who,\nwhen they were come down,  prayed for them, that they might receive the\nHoly Ghost:  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were\nbaptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  <\/sup>Then laid\nthey their<\/i> hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles\u2019 hands\nthe Holy Ghost was  given, he offered them money,  Saying, Give me\nalso this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy\nGhost.  <\/sup>But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with\nthee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with\nmoney.  Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is\nnot right in the sight of God.  Repent therefore of this thy wickedness,\nand pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine<\/span> heart\nmay be forgiven thee.  For I perceive that thou art in the gall of\nbitterness, and in<\/i> the bond of iniquity.  Then answered\nSimon, and said, Pray ye to the  Lord for me, that none of these things\nwhich ye have spoken come upon me.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee the picture, don't you?  Simon, whose first stage is that of one who\nis by nature, and by occupation a deceiver and manipulator, is faced for the\nfirst time in his life with the real.  We are told that he "believes\nand is baptized."  There's just one problem.  Simon may have\naccepted Jesus Christ as the long-awaited Messiah, and goes through water\nbaptism, but the transformation of his character has not yet been changed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Simon\nsees what happens to people when they are baptized in the Holy Spirit.  He\nsees that an instant transformation occurs when Peter lays hands on\npeople.  What Simon fails to understand because he is so caught up in the\npast ways of his sorcery is that the gift of the Holy Spirit comes by yielding\nto Holy Spirit.   The gift of Holy Spirit is NOT a commodity one can\nbuy or sell.  You CAN buy it, but NOT with money.  You buy it with\nyour surrender to Holy Spirit -- no matter the cost.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nSimon pulls a "foolish virgin" stunt and thinks he can buy the Holy\nSpirit.  Riiiggghhhttt<\/span>!!  What Simon failed\nto realize is that the presence of God in Peter's life had cost him\neverything!  There was no amount of money that could take the place of\nwhat Peter had paid in terms of his reputation, his persecution, having his\nlife under continual threat, having been jailed for being a representative of\nthe Lord Jesus Christ, having lost friends, his occupation, etc., etc., etc.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nis it with some folks that they think God is for sale to the highest\nbidder?  How do people come to the conclusion that the "gifts"\nof Holy Spirit are for sale?  The gift comes at the discretion of the\ngiver -- NOT the receiver!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthis instance -- and we return to the picture of the five foolish virgins --\nthe response of the five wise virgins to <\/span>"go\nye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves,"<\/span> has multiple\nfacets.  One might say that their response was a bit tongue-in-cheek since\nthere was no way that oil was going to be purchased in the marketplace. \nOn the other hand, it also signified that a place was still available to them\nin the Kingdom.  The Bridegroom's response to them was this, <\/span>"I know you not."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nare two words in the Greek text that clearly delineate what the Lord was\nsaying.  The first -- and this is the word Jesus used -- is the\nword, <\/span>eido<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  The second word is, <\/span>optanomai<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.  The\nword, <\/span>eido<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, indicates that He didn't have\nintimate knowledge of them -- that there was no ongoing personal relationship\nbetween the five foolish and Himself.  The second word -- and this is NOT\nthe word that Jesus uses -- is the word, <\/span>optanomai<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, and it denotes the\nability to see visibly, to see with one's eyes, to perceive by the seeing with\nthe eye.  You get the difference, I'm sure.  There's a huge\ndifference between simply seeing someone, and recognizing someone you see\nbecause you know them personally and have a real relationship together.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nmay have taken this discussion down a bit of a rabbit trail, but my objective\nhas been to make clear that a person can "get saved."  They can\nbe baptized in water.  They can have their "fire insurance"\ntaken care of, but that in no way denotes having a real, personal relationship\n-- an intimate, love relationship -- with the Lord Jesus Christ.  In the\nnatural realm, relationships are tested.  Folks stick with each other\nthrough the good and the bad.  They become inseparably linked together.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nJesus was making clear through the telling of this parable was that He has a\npeople who are inseparably linked to Him in a love relationship.  They are\nfolks who have paid the price of relationship.  Their walk with God has\nbeen tested.  They have responded -- not reacted -- to every test and\ntrial positively.  Their love for the Lord has only grown throughout the\nyears.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis a people -- a bridal company -- who are continually being filled with Holy\nSpirit because they continually give out that which is given.  Their flame\nof passion burns brightly.  No one who sees or knows them has any doubt\nwhere they stand.  These are a people ready for the Glory of the Lord to\nbe revealed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And\nthere's more next week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
