ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: MATHEMATICAL METAPHORS, Part 1<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In our last series, we've talked at length about the New\nJerusalem as a picture of the Bride of Christ.  We\u2019re still talking about\nthe completed Bride of Christ, and doing the prophetic comparison made by John\nas he talked about the New Jerusalem, but for the next couple of weeks, I'd\nlike to take a different tack.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Throughout Scripture, we see numbers repeated again and again\nand again.  What most folks miss is that these numbers are metaphors in\nHebrew with pictures that go well beyond the surface.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nJohn wrote, <\/span>\u201cAnd I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from\nGod out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband,\u201d<\/span> <\/span>the\nangel of the Lord was showing him the same thing that Ezekiel had seen in a\nvision.  It was not a city in the sense of a physical or geographical\nplace; it was the ensample of a principle: a principle which strikes at the\nvery heart of all that the Lord has been doing in our midst.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nmathematical revelations of this city are, individually and collectively,\ninescapable proofs of the calling, the preparation, and the final adornment of\nus as a people for Jesus Christ.  As John was carried about the city in\nthe Spirit, he saw the following:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And [it] had a wall\ngreat and high, and had twelve<\/u> gates,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And at the gates twelve<\/u>\nangels, and the names written thereon,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>Which are the names\nof the twelve<\/u> tribes of the children of Israel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And the wall of the\ncity had twelve<\/u> foundations,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

5)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And in them the names\nof the twelve<\/u> apostles of the Lamb.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

6)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And he measured the\ncity with the reed, twelve thousand<\/u> furlongs.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

7)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>The length and the\nbreadth and the height of it are equal.  (i.e., 12,000<\/u> X 12,000<\/u>\nX 12,000<\/u> furlongs)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

8)<\/span><\/b>  <\/span>And he measured the\nwall thereof, an hundred and forty four<\/u> cubits, according to the measure\nof a man, that is, of the angel.  (i.e., 12 X 12<\/u> cubits)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before\nwe continue, let me take you back to two earlier pictures in Revelation which\nparallel this picture of the city.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nRevelation 7:3 - 4, 14, John describes hearing an angel cry,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cDo not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have\nsealed the bond-servants of our God on their foreheads.\u2019  And I heard the\nnumber of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand sealed\nfrom every tribe of the sons of Israel\u2026\u2026<\/span>\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201c\u2026And he said to me, \u2018These are the ones who have come through\ngreat tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the\nblood of the Lamb.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nJohn describes a second group of 144,000 (see Revelation 14:1). <\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>\u201cAnd I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion,\nand with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His onoma<\/span>, and the onoma<\/span> of His\nFather written on their foreheads.  And I heard a voice from heaven, like\nthe sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice\nwhich I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.  And\nthey sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and\nthe elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four\nthousand who had been purchased from the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Have\nyou ever considered the significance of this number, 144?  It is twelve in\nits completeness: 12 X 12, twelve squared, twelve completed and fulfilled.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nyou will easily remember, we have discussed the number, 12, and its\nsignificance on numerous occasions over the years.  Twelve is the number\nof Ekklesia<\/span>.  It is the number of preparation\nand processing.  It is the number of tribulation and affliction.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Twelve\nin atomic physics, as we have previously noted, is the maximum number of atoms\nwhich can be cohesively related one to another.  It is the number of\nrelationship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nJesus chose His disciples, He chose twelve \u2013 not nine or ten or thirteen or\nfourteen.  Why?  Because it was the maximum number of people with\nwhom He could develop an interpersonal, intimate relationship.  It was the\nmaximum number of people (units, actually; where we define a family as a unit \u2013\nnot just the father or the husband) with whom a relationship of trust, transparency,\nopenness, faith and love could develop without becoming watered down or\ndiminished.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Twelve\nwas the maximum number of individuals who could relate one to another without\nbecoming divided into cliques or private little circles.  It was the\nperfect number of trust and transparency.  Within the framework of twelve,\nrelationships could develop in which barriers of distrust and fear could be\ndissolved.  Processing and change could take place within the individuals\nwithout the fear of betrayal.  (OK, I know the original twelve had a\nJudas, but the Lord permitted that so as to fulfill His plan to have a Bride,\nfree from the bondage of the Serpent.  The apostle Paul recognized that he\nwas one<\/span> <\/span>\u201cchosen out of due\nseason\u201d<\/span> <\/span>to replace Judas as a completing member\nof the original twelve.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\npicture was initiated with Israel\u2019s selection as the first Bride in the\nearth.  Jacob had twelve sons, each of whom represented one\/twelfth of the\nwhole Bride.  Some have erroneously concluded that there were thirteen\ntribes because of the half-tribes of Joseph: Ephraim and Manasseh, but Ephraim\nwas chosen to take the place of Levi, whose inheritance was the Lord \u2013 not land\nand holdings as did each of the other tribes.  Levi was instructed to live\namongst the other tribes, being a separate yet joined people who existed\nentirely as a channel of communication between the Bridegroom and this\ncorporate Bride.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Anyway,\nJohn sees two distinct groups of 144,000.  The first is taken from the\ntwelve tribes of Israel.  The second was \u201cpurchased from among men\u201d (in\nthe larger sense of the earth).  Why two groups instead of one?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nthe first Bride in the earth: the Bride who chose the flesh and the Law instead\nof the intimate relationship being offered by God?  That Bride was Israel. \nHere is an extraordinary picture of the Spirit of Grace and Supplications, of\nwhom Zechariah prophesied.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Though\nIsrael had been divorced by the Lord, though she had been \u201csent away\u201d into\ncaptivity for her adulteries, and even though the Law specifically forbade\nremarriage to one who had been \u201cput away\u201d (see Deuteronomy 24:1-4), the Lord\npromised that He would once again call Israel to Himself, that He would take\nher back, divorce, warts and all!  He even sent Hosea to live the picture\nof that promise prophetically before Israel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hosea\nwas instructed to marry Gomer<\/span>, a woman who had been a\nprostitute, and to have children with her.  True to her past life, Gomer<\/span> ran off from Hosea after several years of marriage,\nand married another man.  Hosea was instructed by the Lord to go and find\nher and bring her back to himself, and in so doing to say to Israel,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cThou shalt<\/span> abide for me many days;\nthou shalt<\/span> not play the harlot, and thou shalt<\/span> not be for another man: so will I also be for\nthee.  For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king,\nand without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and\nwithout an ephod, and without teraphim<\/span>: Afterward\nshall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David\ntheir king; and shall fear the Lord and His goodness in the latter days.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nmade it clear that there would come an end to the days of His Grace to the\nGentiles (all non-Jewish nations), that Jerusalem (which had been under foreign\noccupation and rule since the first days of Israel\u2019s captivity) and Israel\nwould once again return to a place of relationship with Him, becoming a free\npeople.  Luke quotes Jesus as saying,<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201cFor there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon\nthis people.  And they shall fall by the sword, and shall be led away\ncaptive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles,\nuntil the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.\u201d<\/span>\n<\/span>(Luke\n21:23b-24 NASB)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nPaul shares some startling revelation and promises.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cFor I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed as to this\nmystery, lest you become wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening\nhas happened to and in Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;\nknow therefore that Israel will be saved, healed, delivered and made whole,\njust as it has been written, \u2018The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove\nungodliness from Jacob.  And this is My Covenant with them, when I shall\nhave taken away their sins.\u2019<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cFrom the standpoint of the gospel (at this moment in time) they\nare enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God\u2019s choice, they are\nbeloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and calling of God are\nirrevocable.  For just as you were once disobedient to God, but now have\nbeen shown mercy through and because of their disobedience, so these also have\nnow been disobedient, in order that because of the mercy shown to you, they may\nnow likewise be shown mercy.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span>(Romans 11: 25-29,\nRAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nhe is saying is this: the purpose of the Bridegroom from the beginning was to\npermit Israel to fall away so that He could extend His mercy to the nations,\ncalling them to Himself; and that when the day of His mercy and calling to\nthose nations is fulfilled, He will \u2013 because of their past disobedience \u2013 now\nagain show mercy to Israel and call her to Himself as in the days of old. \nThe promise of the Bridegroom to Israel, therefore, is His Covenant.  In\nspite of Israel\u2019s adulteries, and her subsequent divorce from the Lord, the\nBridegroom\u2019s gifts and calling to her are without repentance.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nthis is Truth is evidenced in a stupendous move in today\u2019s Jewish\ncommunity.  When I first began to work on this article, I was told that in\nNew York City alone, more than a thousand Jews per day<\/u><\/i> are coming\nto know Jesus Christ as their Messiah and Bridegroom.  In Israel, in spite\nof the media attention to the uprisings and problems between the Arab and Jew,\nhundreds and even thousands of both Arabs and Jews are turning to Jesus Christ\nwith their whole heart.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jews\nare forsaking their Judaism and legalistic past in staggering numbers. \nEven though the media spotlight is turned on the political conflicts, a\nspiritual peace is in the works which will sweep the nation of Israel and bring\nabout the fulfillment of Jesus\u2019 promise. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nknow this doesn\u2019t seem to fit with many of the contemporary interpretations of\n\u201cend times,\u201d but it is happening nonetheless!  We are about to behold a\nmiracle of the ages as the Lord brings about a peace between brethren: Jews and\nArabs.  (And, NO, I didn\u2019t grab this out of thin air, or make it up as\nsome kind of new doctrine.  Isaiah prophesied it.  Ezekiel prophesied\nit.  Jeremiah prophesied it.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jerusalem\n\u2013 the New Jerusalem \u2013 the Bride of Christ has, as her gates, the fulfilled, the\ncompleted, the made whole Bride drawn from Israel and seen in the\nrepresentation of each of the twelve tribes.  Standing before each of the\ntwelve gates are twelve angels who sound forth the call of the\nBridegroom.  But the New Jerusalem does not only consist of Jews.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nweek, we\u2019ll wrap up this picture of the New Jerusalem.  Maybe these\nanalogies don\u2019t fit with what you\u2019ve heard or been taught but I want to stir\nyour spirit and cause you to rethink things.  Hopefully, this overall\npicture I\u2019ve been drawing for you of the Call to the Bride by the Bridegroom\ngoing forth in the earth today will awaken things in you and cause you to\nrealize that the Lord has a grand and glorious purpose for His people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Things\nare not unfolding in the traditional ways we\u2019ve been taught.  God is\nworking in extraordinary ways with folks who are responding.  This is a\nyear of overflow for those who walk in commitment to the Lord Jesus\nChrist.  It is a year of tremendous change.  It is a year of\nspectacular disasters, and a year of spectacular blessings for those who are\none with the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nyou aren\u2019t experiencing that overflow, perhaps it is time for you to reevaluate\nyour responses to the Lord.  Maybe it is time for you to junk some\ndoctrines that have kept you in bondage, doctrines that have kept you from\nwalking in the fullness of all that Jesus Christ is doing, saying, and\nbreathing into His called-out people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I've\nused this phrase in the past before, and I want to repeat it for this Coffee\nBreak.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"When\nyou want what God wants for the same reason that God wants it, you become\nunlimited and unstoppable!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
