 <\/p>\n

Over the years, there have been a number of articles online and\n in the print media otherwise concerning the historical proofs of Jesus\n Christ.  Although not an intentional object of personal research on my\n part, in the course of pursuing other historical research, I have stumbled on\n numerous evidences that have existed and are available for anyone interested in\n the truth.<\/span><\/b>\n <\/o:p>\n<\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK. \nThat\u2019s by way of introduction for this morning\u2019s coffee break.  Good\nMorning, Everyone!  Blessings on you and your day ahead!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Today\u2019s\ndiscussion is going to depart somewhat from my previous writing style and\nperhaps be a little more to the point \u2013 clinical, some might say \u2013 but this is\na topic that all of us can take advantage of for the sake of those doubters and\nskeptics who question the authenticity or historicity of Jesus Christ.Pour<\/span> your cup of coffee, and let\u2019s get started.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nnumber of years ago, I stumbled onto a would-be historian and wannabe scholar\nby the name of Hugh Schonfield<\/span> who did a book titled\nsomething like, \u201cIn Search of Historic Jesus.\u201d  It didn\u2019t take long to\nrealize that this man was out to prove that the divine Jesus, the Son of God, didn\u2019t<\/i><\/b>\nexist, and that he \u2013 Schonfield<\/span> \u2013 had an anti-God,\nanti-Faith agenda behind his writings.  He made the outrageous supposition\nthat \u201cthe early Church fathers may have rewritten some of the New Testament\nbooks and influenced others to rewrite the story of Jesus\u201d despite a total\nabsence of any historical or documentary proof to support such a thesis.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Another\nwannabe historian, Gary R. Habermas<\/span>, took it even a\nstep farther with his claim that \u201cthe Gospels represent\nthe teachings of the early church and not those of Jesus himself.\u201d  These\nkinds of spurious claims are johnny<\/span>-come-lately\nefforts of liberals and leftists who neither know, nor have a relationship with\nJesus Christ, nor have they ever even made an effort to personally put Jesus\u2019\nclaims to the test.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, let\u2019s examine some of the historical evidence that does exist. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Many\nyears ago, my father made reference to a volume of historical documents he had\nlooked at when he was studying in Bible College.  He later obtained a copy\nand sent it to me.  The book was titled, The Archko<\/span>\nVolume, and represented the culmination of many years of effort of two eminent\nscholars, Drs. McIntosh and Twyman<\/span> of the Antiquarian\nLodge in Genoa, Italy.  Published in 1887, the work provided copies of\nwritings and works taken from the Talmud and the Sanhedrin contemporary to the\ntime of Christ, along with a copy of \u201cActa<\/span> Pilati<\/span>,\u201d which was a report sent by Pontius Pilate \u2013 the\nRoman procurator or governor of Judaea \u2013 to Caesar detailing the arrest, trial\nand crucifixion of Jesus.  Some of the other documents included Gamaliel\u2019s<\/span> interview with Joseph and Mary concerning\nJesus.  Gamaliel<\/span>, you may remember, was the\nPharisee at whose feet Paul the apostle sat while he was yet a Pharisee, being\ninstructed in the ways of the sect.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nArchko<\/span> Volume also includes some documented reports\nof Caiaphas, the High Priest who presided over the Jewish trial and judgment of\nJesus prior to His being brought before Pilate, as well as his report to the\nSanhedrin concerning the resurrection of Jesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

According\nto the testimony of the two researchers and archeologists who came up with the\ndocuments, the sources of these documents were ancient libraries in\nConstantinople and the Senatorial Docket in Rome.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nyou read these documents, it provides an interesting perspective and an\notherwise not-considered view of others who either participated in or observed\nevents and people who were involved in some way with Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof the things often overlooked by those who seek to authenticate the historical\nJesus is the fact that what we now refer to as the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke\nand John) were written as personal testimonies of men who walked and talked\nwith Jesus.  These were eyewitness accounts.  What makes them all the\nmore intriguing is the fact that they were written at different times, in\ndifferent places, and in three different languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic),\nand yet they agree with each other.  Each of the writers has a distinct\npersonality and a perspective that differs from the others; and that\npersonality comes through in the writing style.  Nevertheless, there is\nsynoptic agreement between Matthew, Mark and Luke. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John\nwrites from a totally different perspective as Jesus\u2019 best friend, and the\nmajority of what he writes details the final week of Jesus\u2019 life and what He\ntaught before He was crucified.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But,\nlet\u2019s step away from the accepted canon for a moment and look at the works of\nhistorians who were contemporary to the time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Philo\nJudaeus<\/span> of Alexandria, Egypt was a contemporary of\nboth Jesus and the apostle Paul.  While he does not mention Jesus by name\nspecifically in his works, he does outline some of the events and individuals \u2013\nsuch as Pilate and Herod \u2013 who took part in the trial, judgment, and\ncrucifixion of Jesus, and details certain events that could only have taken\nplace with Jesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Flavius\nJosephus was a Jewish historian who doted on the history of his people. \nBorn during the reign of Caligula in or about 37 AD, he provides convincing\nevidence of Jesus Christ.  All the more interesting is the fact that at\nage 19, he joined the Pharisees, and apparently remained one for his entire\nlife.  He also became a Roman citizen, and was commissioned by Flavian<\/span> to write a history of the Jews in 67 or 68\nAD. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

His\nthird published work, The Antiquities of the Jews, which was issued in 93 or 94\nAD was primarily an apology or defense of Judaism.  What makes it of such\ninterest to us is the fact that in the course of issuing this work, he gives\ncredence to Jesus Christ, (see Antiquities XVIII, 3) reporting events that\ncorroborate Scripture.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

While\nsome modern historians have suggested that Josephus\u2019 works were tampered with\nby the early church fathers and altered in such a way as to give favorable\ntreatment to Jesus Christ, there is no evidence to support that thesis. \nWhat is clear is that Josephus fell from favor with his erstwhile sect of the\nPharisees because of his reports on Jesus Christ, and that Judaism today still\nessentially rejects his works as authentic as a result.  Josephus himself\nnotes toward the end of his writings that he was not held in favor among the\nJews in the way he was 20 or 30 years prior.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntake our historical review the next step.  Near the end of the first\ncentury, and throughout the second and third centuries, we find the works of\nClement of Alexandria, Ignatius, and Polycarp (who was a disciple of\nJohn).  Each of them share their individual testimonies and\nexperiences.  Not intending to be historians, but teachers and apologists\nfor Jesus Christ, they nevertheless give us an insight into the developments of\nChristianity and how it impacted the world of their day.  Though none of\nthem were personal witnesses to the life of Christ, they were the product of\nthose who had walked and talked with Jesus Christ.  Each of them died\nbecause of their witness and testimony.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nis another historical evidence of Jesus Christ that most intending historians\nseem to miss completely: the evidence contained in what Jesus is reported to\nhave said.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nset aside for a moment the fact that what is reported in the four Gospels is\nincorporated into the New Testament, and consider the statements on their own merit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nindeed Jesus was a historical individual, and the statements attributed to Him\nare true and factual, they can be put to the test.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nmade some statements and some phenomenal promises that no one else in history\nhas ever made.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI\nAM the Way, the Truth and the Life.  No man cometh to the Father, but by\nme.\u201d  Is that actually true?  How about this one? \u201cI am the\nDoor.  By me if any man enter in he shall be saved.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whoaa<\/span><\/span>!  Buddha never\nsaid anything like that.  Mohammed never said anything like that. \nConfucius never made any such claim.  So, if Jesus was the only one to\nmake such claims, then everything else He said stands or falls on those\nstatements.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

How,\nthen, do you put those statements to the test?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Well,\nlet\u2019s begin with promises He made to \u201cthem that believe.\u201d  If those\npromises can be proven to work, we have a basis for believing the rest of what\nHe says.Take<\/span> a look at Mark 16:17, 18,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cAnd these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name\nshall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take\nup serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they\nshall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nthere was His instruction to his Disciples, (Matthew 10:8)<\/span> <\/span>\u201cHeal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out\ndevils: freely ye have received, freely give.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Or,\nhow about,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cVerily, verily, I say\nunto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and\ngreater works<\/i> than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And\nwhatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be\nglorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it<\/i>.\u201d<\/span>(John 14:12-14)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Those\nkinds of promises were made to those who came into fellowship, commitment, and\nunion with Him.  Were they true?  Could they be put to the test?I<\/span> don\u2019t have space to tell you in a journal like this\nof all the hundreds and perhaps thousands of times I have seen every one of\nthese miracles.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Casting\nout demons?  More times than I can possible count, with visible displays\nthat would curl your hair.Speaking<\/span> with new\ntongues?  Let\u2019s don\u2019t go there.  It is impossible to recount the tens\nof thousands of personal experiences and the folks I have seen, known, laid\nhands on, etc., who have received this experience.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take\nup serpents?  Here is one of those Hebrew metaphors couched in the Greek\ntext of the New Testament that some folks have misapplied with some deadly\nresults.  \u201cThey shall take up serpents\u201d is a Hebrew metaphor that is used\non several occasions throughout both Old and New Testaments; and it means \u201cto\ntake on wily, deceitful men who seek to gain the advantage over you in\narguments.\u201d  Once again, it is impossible to recount the number of times I\nhave seen this promise fulfilled.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

How\nabout, \u201cIf they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them..\u201d?  This\nhas both literal and metaphorical applications, and it speaks of the protection\nprovided by the Lord when someone seeks to kill you, or you ingest something\npoisonous without your knowledge.  I can\u2019t tell you how many times I had\nto apply this promise in a very literal sense living in the arctic.  The\nonly water we had was contaminated.  There were viruses visible to the\nnaked eye, and we simply didn\u2019t have the filtration equipment to cleanse the\nwater.  We knew we were there at the instruction of the Lord, and that we\ncould claim that promise.  As far as I know, we never got sick or\ncontracted some disease as a result of drinking otherwise deadly water. \nIt was a daily sign that followed our existence for so long as it was needed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nof course, there is the most common evidence of all: \u201cThey shall lay hands on\nthe sick, and they shall recover.\u201d  Maybe there are diseases that I haven\u2019t\nprayed for at some time in the past that folks have contracted, but I assure\nyou that they are few and far between.  Apart from the fact that I have\npersonally experienced instantaneous healings for my own body, it would be\nimpossible to recount the number of people I have laid hands on or prayed for\nwho have been healed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

These\npromises are to \u201cthem that believe.\u201d  These are not religious\npromises.  These promises are not evidenced in other religions. \nThese are the here and now, everyday proofs available to anyone who accepts\nJesus Christ, believes on Him, repents from their past and walks with Him on a\ndaily basis.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\nprovide the greatest proof of the historical Jesus one can ever consider. \nThey aren\u2019t historical \u2013 at least from the standpoint of something that\nhappened once a couple of thousand years ago.  They are available in the\npast, the present and the future as evidence of a living Jesus Christ who\nindeed rose from the dead as He said He would, and as we have eyewitness\naccounts for.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

They\nare the kinds of evidence that would stand up in any court of law as\nirrefutable proofs that Jesus was a historical person, that He did live and\ndie, and that He rose again as the Son of God, providing us with ongoing proofs\nthat He is<\/i><\/b> alive now and forever!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nyou need personal proof of the historical Jesus, it is available to you in\noverwhelming quantities.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finish\nyour coffee.  Meditate on these things.  When you\u2019re done, don\u2019t just\nthink, \u201cOh, well, that was interesting,\u201d and go on down the road without making\na personal decision concerning Jesus Christ.  Make that decision,\nnow!  And get ready for a lifetime of adventures that will fill more books\nthan you can write.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
