ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: 40 YEARS BELOW ZERO, Part 2<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Since\n Dad was with the Assemblies of God by this time (he had graduated from an A\/G\n Bible college, after all!) and an accepted member of the Northwest District, he\n decided to present his need and vision to his district brethren.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nit was when Alvin Capener<\/span> went in to meet with his\ndenominational leadership.  "Brother Capener<\/span>,\nwe appreciate that you have a call into missionary work, but Alaska is out of\nthe question!  We just can't send you to a place where everything is so\nexpensive.  Now, we have doors of opportunity for you in Africa and in\nChina.  We'd be glad to send you either place, and money will be available\nfor that purpose."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nwas not a little astonished at their response.  "Brethren, God didn't\ncall me to Africa or China.  He called me to Alaska, and that's where I\nhave to go."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nquick answer was, "We will not send you to Alaska.  You will not go\nthere -- not with our blessing or approval."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dad\ngot up from his seat and said, "Brethren, you didn't call me: God\ndid!  And I'm going to Alaska, with or without you!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Then\nyou're going without us.  We forbid it."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He\nshook his head in frustration and disgust and headed out the door, all the more\ndetermined to head north -- never mind the fact that he didn't have a clue as\nto how God would make that kind of provision.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nyou have a call the likes of which Dad had received, had it confirmed with a\nburning bush (cornstalk) experience, and watched the Lord prepare the way in\nfront of you the way he had seen it, and people who are supposed to be\nspiritual leaders decide you should do something other than what God has given\nyou to do, it stirs no small reaction in your spirit.  I've had the same\nthing happen to me on several occasions during the nearly 60 years that have\nelapsed since I first began preaching the Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dad\nheaded out of that office not quite sure what avenue of provision God would\nmake, but he figured that since he was in a community where commercial fishing\nwas the primary occupation, he should try his hand at it.  It mattered not\nthat he was not a commercial fisherman, nor that he had been raised a long way\nfrom the sea and fishing in general.  If God had given him the ability to\ndo so many other things, there was no reason why he couldn't go fishing. \nIn the back of his mind, he figured that with the blessing of the Lord, he\nmight actually generate enough money to pay off the church debt.  Where\nthe other $5,000 would come from was not something he had an answer for at the\nmoment.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Not\nfar from Ilwaco<\/span> was the community of Raymond,\nWashington, where there was a fish cannery.  The owner of the cannery was\nsomeone Alvin Capener<\/span> had befriended.  (I've\nlost track of this man's name, so for the sake of our discussion, we'll refer\nto him as "Jim.")  The cannery owner had a few boats of varying\nsize around or near the cannery, so he became the natural individual for Alvin\nto share his desires.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Jim,\nyou know that I've shared with you our call to Alaska.  We've got a debt\nto pay off on our church building, and I've decided to take advantage of the\nfact that this is a commercial fishing area.  Do you have a boat I could\nrent from you for the fishing season?  I'm going to try my hand at this in\nthe expectation that God will help me."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ncannery owner couldn't help but laugh.  One doesn't become a commercial\nfisherman just because they decide to.  Deep sea fishing has its own\nhazards anyway, but fishing off the mouth of the Columbia River is more than a\nlittle treacherous -- particularly for those who don't know the kinds of\ncurrents and turbulence created by the Columbia's dumping into the\nPacific.  Virtually all of the commercial fishermen in the region had\ngrown up as second, third and fourth generation sea salts, raised on the water\nwith all the instincts of the sea finely honed in them -- instincts developed over\na lifetime.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Alvin\nCapener's<\/span> decision to do commercial fishing was\ntantamount to an individual today deciding they're going to be computer\nrepairmen or software engineers and diving into the business without any\nconcept of what makes a computer operate, the math that drives computing as a\nwhole, and the principles behind the development of software and operating\nsystems.  Yup.  That's a pretty good analogy.  Anyone who tries\nit gets "lost at sea" in a hurry -- uhhh<\/span>,\npun intended!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nAlvin Capener<\/span> was no ordinary soul.  In the few\nshort years Jim had come to know him, he'd seen this\nfarmer-carpenter-builder-preacher accomplish some pretty extraordinary things.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"OK,\nCapener<\/span>.  Not sure you know what you're getting\nyourself into, but I'll play along.  I've got a thirty-foot boat alongside\nthe cannery.  Needs some work, but if you want to fix it up, you're\nwelcome to use it.  I'll buy all the fish you catch, too."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nthings began.  Dad's knowledge of carpentry and a keen eye for woodworking\nmade the repair job on this old boat pretty easy.  Fishing season was upon\nthe area, and it was slated for a seven-week period.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfirst week of fishing season began, and to the astonishment of everyone, Dad\ntook more fish than any other fisherman in port -- including those with boats\ntwice and three times the size.  The cannery owner was\nastounded!  This isn't luck, this is miraculous!<\/i>  When\nthat load of fish was dumped at the cannery, Jim said to Alvin, "Capener<\/span>, if you're going to fish like this, we've got to get\nyou a bigger boat.  I just happen to have a 50-footer on hand.  Take\nthat instead."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof the factors that differentiated Alvin Capener's<\/span>\nfishing season from the rest of the commercial fishermen was that he only\nfished six days a week, returned from sea on Saturdays so he could be in his\npulpit on Sundays.  Because the season was only seven weeks long, most of\nthe fishermen would literally rotate on a continuous basis.  When their\nboats filled, or they felt they had a sufficient catch, they would return to\nport, dump their catches, and head directly back to sea.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nother thing: you'll see from the newspaper clipping that the fish being caught\nwere tuna -- albacore tuna.  Ilwaco<\/span> had never\nbeen noted as a tuna port.  They caught salmon.  The tail end of this\nnewspaper clipping notes that "The river salmon catches remain small, and\nvery little salmon or silversides are being brought in by the trollers<\/span>."  Toward the end of the previous\nseason, however, fishermen had begun catching tuna instead of salmon for some\ninexplicable reason -- and no one was complaining!  Albacore tuna were\nbringing six times the price of salmon.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nsecond week mirrored the first.  Fishermen began to sit up and take notice\nof this "Landlubber-Preacher-Fisherman" (as he was referred to in a\ncouple of AP articles).  When the third week came and went and Al Capener's<\/span> catch of fish equaled or exceeded that of\nfishermen with 80-foot boats, they decided that "Capener<\/span>\nmust have some carefully guarded secret."     \n    Saturday of that third week, several fishermen came to Dad\nand said, "Capener<\/span>, where are you going? \nWhat are you doing?  What's your secret?"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Those\naren't questions you ask another fisherman.  Each man guards his plans and\nhis knowledge of where the fish are biting like a military top secret so as to\nhave the best possible catch.  Since Alvin Capener<\/span>\nwas a greenhorn -- a "landlubber" without previous deep sea fishing\nexperience -- everyone figured he'd be good for a few tips since he wouldn't\nknow just how treasured such information really is.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

No\nmatter.  "Gentlemen, you know I'm in my pulpit on Sunday.  If\nyou want to wait until Monday morning and follow me out, I don't have any\nsecrets.  You're welcome to see where I go and what I do."  Ho, Yeesss<\/span>!  And wait, they did, until Monday.  As\nthey prepared to head out to sea, all agreed they'd meet back in port on\nSaturday to compare catches.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sure\nenough, Saturday of that fourth week, everyone met back in the Ilwaco<\/span> port.  It had been a great week for\neveryone!  Those who had followed Dad out to sea were beaming. \n"Capener<\/span>, how'd you<\/b> do? \nThis has been our best week so far."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Take\na look," was his laconic answer.  When they saw his catch, their\nfaces fell.  "This is impossible!" said one.  "You've\nstill caught more than I've caught, and my boat is nearly twice the size of\nyours.  I just don't understand it!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas Week Seven of the fishing season, however, that was going to tell the real\ntale.  Everyone was out to sea, and most had headed out a hundred or more\nmiles.  Alvin Capener<\/span> had decided to be\ndifferent that week.  He was beyond 200 miles out.  You'll understand\nthe initial trepidation of Jim at the cannery in Raymond when you realize that\nneither of these boats Dad used had anything other than a nautical\ncompass.  He had no radio and no means of communication.  He was\nsteering his course at sea by dead reckoning.  Maybe we can understand why\nthey call it "dead reckoning."  Hehehehehe<\/span>.............. \nMore than a few sailors have lost their lives that way.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nmade his fishing experiences all the more humorous was that Al Capener<\/span> had no professional fishing gear of any kind. \nBoth boats had been set up for salmon trolling, NOT tuna.  Never one to be\ndeterred by "facts," he just threw lines over the side of the\nboat.  Every single albacore tuna he caught he pulled in by hand -- every\nlast one of them!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

By\nWednesday of Week Seven, the skies were portending stormy conditions -- in\nfact, one very big blow.  All of the professional seamen knew what was\ncoming and began a retreat back into the port of Ilwaco<\/span>. \nAlvin Capener<\/span>, on the other hand, saw the darkening\nskies, calculated it as just another rainstorm -- he'd already been through a\nfew of them during this seven-week period -- and stayed put.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thursday\nmorning came and went and there was no sign of Dad's boat -- anywhere!  No\none could remember having seen his boat as they made their way back to port,\nand folks began to worry.  The expected major storm had hit.  Winds\nwere tropical force, and the seas were running at 50 feet.  By Thursday\nafternoon, a delegation of fishermen made their way to the Capener<\/span>\nparsonage to express their regrets.  "Mrs. Capener<\/span>,\nwe're awfully sorry about the loss of your husband at sea.  If you like,\nwe'll begin making preparations for your husband's funeral on Saturday."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
