 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Once again, Good Morning! <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Greetings and Salutations!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Have to tell you another \u201cgranddaughter story,\u201d before we resume\nwith our discussion on the Valley of the Shadow of Death.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Trinity just turned the ripe old age of 5 this past week. In\nyears gone by, we\u2019ve talked about the precociousness of Jessica when she was\nthis age (now a teenager). <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Trinity has some of\nthose same traits. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>She is our\nsinger. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>She just loves to\nsing. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>She\u2019s heard Della\n(Grandma) and me sing every so often in the Spirit and has asked what language\nwe are singing in. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>We\u2019ve explained to\nher that we simply allow Holy Spirit to take control of our tongues and pray or\nsing in whatever language He picks, and that we do not understand that\nlanguage.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve explained to Trinity that she can do the same thing. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>All she needs to do is to release her tongue to whatever\nHoly Spirit wants to say or sing, and she will begin to sing just like we\ndo. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>More than any other\nsong, she sings (almost daily) the Scripture song that Rich Warren (part of our\nworship team and bassist) did this past year, Arise, Shine, For Your Light Has\nCome.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This morning, she began singing one of the songs she likes to\nsing and suddenly began singing in another language. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>I think it must have caught her by surprise because she\nstopped after a few phrases and said to me, \u201cGrandpa, is that Spanish?\u201d <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>I laughed and said, \u201cNo, Sweetheart. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>I don\u2019t know what language that is.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

She was a bit puzzled but decided it was OK and tried singing\nsome more. <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Look out\nworld! <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Here comes a\ntongues-singing Trinity!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The events that transpire in our lives in this place are the\nproof text of what has been established in the first five foundational phases\nof our developing relationship with Jesus Christ.  Although I don't intend\nto get into these with any specificity today, it is important to understand\nthat what happens in the valley of the shadow of death is that we discover that\nwe need<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>"fear no evil."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The reason?<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>"For Thou art\nwith me."<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>But there's more.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

"Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The objective of the valley, therefore, is to demonstrate to us\nthat we have no reason to fear -- AT ALL!  The place of the valley,\nhowever, is also the place of learning the value of the rod of discipline and\nauthority, and the staff of guidance by the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As I said, we won't get into the "fear no evil" aspect\nof the valley today, nor the significance of the rod and staff.  Let's\njust talk about the valley.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You'll notice that David refers to this as the valley of the\nSHADOW of death.  The word occurring in the Hebrew text of this verse for\nshadow is<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>\u00fa\u00e5\u2020\u00ee\u00c8\u00ec\u00c0\u00f6\u00c7<\/span><\/span> <\/span>-<\/span> <\/span>tsalmaveth<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> (tsal-maw'-veth<\/span>)<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span>This word comes from two roots in\nHebrew:<\/span> <\/span>\u00ec\u00f6\u00c5<\/span><\/span> <\/span>--<\/span> <\/span>tsel<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>(<\/span><\/b>meaning: to be\novershadowed, to be dark and opa<\/span><\/i><\/b>que),<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>and<\/span> <\/span>\u00fa\u00e5\u2020\u00ee\u00c8<\/span><\/span> <\/span>-- maveth<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>(meaning: death --\nboth natural and violent.<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span> <\/span>Maveth<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>however, is used frequently throughout the O.T. to denote<\/span> <\/span>pestilence and ruin<\/span><\/i><\/b>.)<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus the shadow isn't death, but rather the threat of it. \nIt isn't necessarily the threat of being killed (in a physical sense) as much\nas it is in being stricken with some deadly disease, or brought to financial\nand economic ruin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember what we quoted a couple weeks ago where Jesus talked\nabout this very thing? <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 6:31-34<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span> <\/span>Therefore take no\nthought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal\nshall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles [nations\nof this world] seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth<\/span>\nthat ye have need of all these things. <\/span> <\/span>But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and\nall these things shall be added unto you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall\ntake thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do you see it?  The threat of insufficiency, the threat of\nnot having enough, the threat of being stricken in some way or another -- and\neven the threat of being killed -- are all balderdash to the believing\nChristian.  The key word, of course, is "believing."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The paths of righteousness are going to take us into the valley\nof the shadow of death deliberately.  God doesn't take us there to\nkill us off, nor does He take us into the valley to see what we are made\nof.  His objective is to do us good.  The valley experience allows us\nto see what He has accomplished in our lives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The valley of the shadow of death is a place of threats. \nIt is a place of intimidation.  It is a period of time (make that periods\nof time) in which all that the Lord has established during our commitment to\nHim is put to the test: our declarations and confessions of faith, our eating\nof the Word, and our drinking of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There isn't a believer alive who doesn't face valley and shadow\nexperiences from time to time.  There isn't a believer alive who doesn't\nface the threat of death in some way or another -- whether that threat is\nphysical or emotional or spiritual, or even financial.  Do we get scared\nat times?  I'd be lying if I said otherwise.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The issue isn't whether we get hit with momentary fear,\ntrepidation, uncertainty or whatever.  The question is how we\nrespond.  Are we going to be reactionaries and hit the panic button, or\nare we going to simply respond with the Word of God?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The death-dealing, death-threatening issues that we face at\ndifferent times are real enough.  They are "factual"\ncircumstances.  What I have hammered home throughout the past 35 years or\nso as the Lord has continued to open my own eyes is that "facts" and\n"truth" are two different things.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The fact may be that you are facing a doctor's report that you\nhave cancer.  How are you going to respond to the doctor's report? \nAre you going to panic and begin weeping because fear overtakes you?  Are\nyou going to react with "Woe is me.  My father died of cancer, my\ngrandfather died of cancer, and my great-grandfather died of cancer. \nGuess I'm doomed with the same curse"?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Or, are you going to respond with the Word of God?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 103:3-4:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>Who healeth<\/span> ALL thy diseases, Who redeemeth<\/span> thy life from destruction, Who crowneth<\/span> thee with lovingkindness<\/span>\nand tender mercies.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are you going<\/span> toi<\/span> <\/span>declare that Word\nas truth --<\/span> <\/span>THE<\/span><\/b> <\/span>TRUTH<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>-- which supersedes\nall facts?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember!  (And I keep saying this again and again and\nagain.) <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 15:11<\/span><\/u><\/b>; <\/span> <\/span>Not that which<\/span> goeth<\/span> <\/span>into the mouth defileth<\/span> a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth,\nthis defileth<\/span> the man.<\/span> <\/span>(see also Matthew\n15:20, Mark 7:20, and James 3:6)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus also put it like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 12:34-37<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span> For out of\nthe abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh<\/span>. \nA good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth<\/span>\nforth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth<\/span>\nforth evil things.  But I say unto you, That every idle word that men\nshall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.  For\nby thy words thou shalt<\/span> be justified, and by thy\nwords thou shalt<\/span> be condemned." <\/span> <\/span>(see also Luke 6:45)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If you speak health to yourself, then<\/span> <\/span>"by thy words thou shalt<\/span> be\njustified."<\/span> <\/span> <\/span>If you speak, "woe is me, guess\nI've had it," then<\/span> <\/span>"by thy words thou shalt<\/span> be condemned."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Understand?  I'm not trying to whip a dead horse here by\ncontinuing to talk about the words that come out of our mouths; the objective\nis to drill you -- to drill me for that matter -- with the critical importance\nof the words that come out of our mouths.  This is especially true in\ncrisis situations and in moments of stress.  The valley of the shadow of\ndeath is just that: the shadow of death -- not death itself.  It is the\nthreats and intimidation of the Enemy to see if you will give him rulership<\/span> in some area of your life by the words that come\nout of your mouth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Everything -- and I mean, EVERYTHING -- in your life will be\ntested in the valley; not all at once, of course: you'd buckle under the\npressure.  The Word of God absolutely promises that<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I Corinthians 10:9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>There hath no\ntemptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who\nwill not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the\ntemptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That word, "temptation" (or "tempted") in\nthe original Greek text is the word,<\/span> <\/span>\u00f0\u00e5\u00e9\u00f1\u00e1\u00f3\u00ec\u00fc\u00f2<\/span><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/b>-<\/span><\/b> <\/span>peirasmos<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b>:<\/span><\/i><\/b>meaning<\/span><\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>putting to proof, to test objectively (for failure), to\nscrutinize or examine<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/i> <\/span>But here is the definition of<\/span> <\/span>peirasmos<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span>that really hits home:<\/span> <\/span>to entice<\/span><\/u><\/i><\/b> <\/span><\/i><\/b>[to lure away from that which you\nknow to be right<\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b>]<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There is a phony-baloney doctrine running around parts of the\nbody of Christ.  That doctrine says that God occasionally tempts or tests\nus to see what we are made of.  WRONG!!!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

God is not out to lure us away from truth.  Neither does He\ntempt or test us.  Neither does He permit (or more accurately, actively\nallow) situations in our lives which put us to the test.  You have to\nremember that we are created in the image and likeness of God.  We have a\nwill of our own which we exercise at all times.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I want to talk more about this, but let me first quote for you\nfrom James\u2019 letter to the body of Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

James 1:13-18:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>"Let no man\nsay when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with\nevil, neither tempteth<\/span> he any man:  But every\nman is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.  Then\nwhen lust hath conceived, it bringeth<\/span> forth sin: and\nsin, when it is finished, bringeth<\/span> forth death."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But James doesn't leave it there.  He explains why\ntemptation and testing simply cannot come from the Lord:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do not err, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every\nperfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with\nwhom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.  Of his own will begat\nhe us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits<\/span>\nof his creatures.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I can't tell you how many times I've heard folks say, "I\njust can't understand why the Lord didn't intervene in that situation. \nWhy does God allow evil in the earth?"<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

My friends, this is a lying contrivance of Satan.  God DOES\nNOT allow evil in the earth: WE DO!  Let me explain.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Many of you are familiar with the Scripture,<\/span> <\/span>The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof<\/span> <\/span>(Psalm 24:11)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But how many of you know the corollary Scripture:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 115:16<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>"The heaven,\neven the heavens, are the LORD\u2019S: but the earth hath he given to the children\nof men."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Contrary to popular opinion, this is not a contradiction. \nLet's look at these verses in proper context.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Lord begins first by creating the earth and the heavens.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Genesis 1:1:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span> In the\nbeginning God created the heavens and the earth.<\/span> <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John 1:3<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>tells us,<\/span> <\/span>All things were made by him; and without him was not<\/span> any thing<\/span> <\/span>made that was made.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then in Hebrews 1:2, Paul writes of Jesus,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of\nhis person, and<\/span> <\/span>upholding all\nthings by the word of his power<\/span><\/u>...<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So we've established that all of creation was made by the Lord;\nand further that He upholds (or holds together) all of creation by the Word of\nHis power.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK, so far?  Any question?  I know you are probably\nwondering what in the world all of this has to do with,<\/span> <\/span>Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,<\/span> <\/span>or the 23rd Psalm, but bear with me.  I'm laying<\/span> some foundations for your understanding.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let me leave you in suspense today.  This is where we will\npick it up next week, and I'll explain why we are responsible -- from a\nScriptural standpoint -- for literally everything that takes place on this\nearth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
