ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: GOING BEYOND, Part 5<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/p>\n

Perhaps one of the most controversial and misunderstood and\nabused teachings in the body of Christ has been that on the Baptism of the Holy\nSpirit. Although there have been individuals who have experienced this throughout\nthe generations of time since the first century believers experienced it on the\nDay of Pentecost, no practice and no experience has been treated as cavalierly\nas has the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Azusa Street Revival which took off in the first decade of\nthe 20th Century and became a lightning rod in the body of Christ in 1906\nushered in a time of restoration of this baptism into believers at large.\nDespite the strong emphasis throughout the New Testament on speaking in tongues\nand the teachings in the letters of Paul, many words have been taken out of\ncontext to justify the doctrines which eliminate the necessity of this baptism\nand the accompanying of speaking in tongues.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hopefully, the next few Coffee Breaks will address this\ncontroversy and lay to rest some of the misinformation and misunderstanding\nthat had plagued so many believers.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An\noft-quoted and mis<\/span>-applied verse from Paul\u2019s\ndiscourse to the Ekklesia<\/span> in Corinth appears in I\nCorinthians 14:5.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nKJV reads like this: <\/span>\u201cI would that ye all spake<\/span> with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for\ngreater is he that prophesieth<\/span> than he that speaketh<\/span> with tongues, except he interpret, that the church\nmay receive edifying.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nproblem with this translation is that it turns what Paul is saying into a wish\nthat everyone would speak with tongues, and that speaking in tongues as a sign\nof Holy Spirit Baptism is somehow optional. Let me re-translate from the Greek\ntext and then show you why the standard translations really miss the context of\nwhat Paul is saying.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI have determined that it is imperative that you all speak with\ntongues; but even more so is it needful that you prophesy: for of greater\nimportance [to the Body] is prophesying than speaking in tongues unless your\ntongues are accompanied with an interpretation so that the Body is confirmed\nand built up [in their faith.]\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>(I Corinthians 14:5,\nRAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019m\nsure you see what Paul is getting at! In no way does he minimize the importance\nor need to speak in tongues. What he is addressing in this instance is the\nimportance of utilizing that same flow of the Spirit that comes with speaking\nin tongues to prophesy so that the gathered body can receive a direct Word that\nbuilds and edifies and imparts more of the nature and character of the Lord\ninto their beings.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\nimportant to see why we translate Paul\u2019s statements this way, so let me take\nyou to some critical Greek words he uses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Where\nthe KJV translates the first part of the verse, \u201cI would that,\u201d the Greek\nword, thelo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> (or theleo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>)\nappears. Had Paul used the word, boulomai<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>, instead, one could get away\nwith the use of the word, \u201cwould\u201d as the KJV uses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However,\nthe word, thelo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nmeans: <\/span>to determine (in the\nactive sense), to require (as an imperative)<\/span><\/u><\/b>. <\/span>On the other hand the word, boulomai<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nmeans: <\/span>to wish for, to\nacquiesce, to prefer, to be inclined towards.<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paul\nis not saying that he wished<\/b> that all folks would speak in\ntongues; he is not making this a preferred option. What he is addressing in\nthis narrative is his requirement for folks to move on beyond just the use of\ntongues into the prophetic utterances that will benefit the body.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This\nis where there is great misunderstanding concerning the use of tongues. Lots of\nfolks think that tongues is mainly an initial manifestation that occurs when\none gets baptized in Holy Spirit. It is a manifestation, but there\u2019s a whole lot\nmore than that to speaking in tongues. As we have already noted, we are talking\nabout baptism \u2014 and that denotes an immersion which results in a complete\nchange from the past.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve\nsort of gotten the cart before the horse with my sharing today, so let\u2019s get to\nthe crux of why Holy Spirit baptism \u2014 and the manifestation of that baptism\nthat comes with speaking in other languages \u2014 is so critical to believers AND\nto the spiritual health and growth of the Body of Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In\norder to get to the revelation of baptism in Holy Spirit, we need to first take\na look at something that James wrote in his epistle.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cEven so, the tongue is a diminutive part of the body and yet\nhas the ability to be grandiloquent or \u201ctalk big.\u201d Are you seeing how much fuel\nit can throw on a small fire?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe tongue is like a lightning strike with the capacity to\ncreate a world of injustice and unrighteousness; so is the tongue among the\nfunctions and abilities of the various parts of our body, that it dirties and\nsoils our whole being, igniting the passions of [human] nature, creating a\nhell-inspired and driven blaze [with eternal consequences].\u201d<\/span> (James 3:5-6,\nRAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\nunderstand, don\u2019t you? Natural human nature \u2014 natural, that is, in the sense\nthat it is not under Holy Spirit\u2019s control \u2014 lacks the ability to control or\ntame the tongue.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jesus\nset the stage with His teaching to prepare His disciples \u2014 AND US \u2014 on why immersion\nin and into Holy Spirit is so critical to those who will take on the\ncitizenship, the personality and the characteristics of the Kingdom of God. We\nare to be representatives \u2014 ambassadors, if you will \u2014 of a Kingdom that is\nforeign to this world, its societies and its cultures.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our\ncitizenship in the Kingdom brings with it a complete change of language. In the\nsame way that we become citizens of a Kingdom that contains the tongues and\nlanguages of men and of angels, our language must reflect that change of\ncitizenship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\neasy illustration of this change can be demonstrated in my maternal\ngrandparents who came from Finland. The language of their former homeland was\nincompatible with the language of America. While my grandparents may have\ncontinued to communicate with each other and with family members in the\nlanguage that was \u201cnative\u201d to them, in order for them to become American\ncitizens, they had to learn to speak the English language.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

For\nus as citizens of a new Kingdom, here\u2019s how Jesus explains it:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Matthew 12:34-37<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\u201cO\ngeneration of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the\nabundance of the heart the mouth speaketh<\/span>. A good man\nout of the good treasure of the heart bringeth<\/span> forth\ngood things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth<\/span>\nforth evil things.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak,\nthey shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words\nthou shalt<\/span> be justified, and by thy words thou shalt<\/span> be condemned.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nenormous importance of what Jesus is getting at is the fact that a \u201dgood man\u201d \u2014\na redeemed and transformed individual, one whose citizenship is in the Kingdom\n\u2014 will bring forth life out of the beneficial deposits of the Kingdom within\nhimself.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

By\nthe same token, the unredeemed, unregenerate person will use that creative\nmember of his body to bring forth calamity, disease, degeneration and malice\nout of the deposits of wickedness within his being.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This\nbrings us to why Jesus commanded the disciples to \u201ctarry\u201d (the Greek word\nis: kathizo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nmeaning: <\/span>to wait for a\nscheduled appointment<\/span><\/u><\/b>) until they were invested, infused and clothed with Kingdom\npower that would literally transform them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nBody of Christ has largely been ignorant of the significance of \u201cthe appointed time.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nWord is filled with many pictures of appointments. Jesus quoted from Isaiah\u2019s\nprophecy (Isaiah 61:1-4) when He declared that the <\/span>\u201cSpirit of the Lord God is upon me,\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>and then said, <\/span>\u2018to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paul\nfollowed that up when he wrote the Corinthians, saying, <\/span>\u201cbehold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of\nsalvation.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>(II Corinthians 6:2b)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\nmay appear that I\u2019m overly stressing the concept of having a \u201cscheduled\nappointment\u201d but it is important for believers to realize that \u2014 for the\noverwhelming majority \u2014 we have a time of pursuit of that appointment for our\nimmersion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Years\nago when I was traveling with Audrey Mieir<\/span> doing\nconcerts, we had a family who participated in these concerts consisting of two\nsisters and their five daughters who sang together, frequently doing acapella<\/span> music. In the early days of their travel and\nparticipation in these concerts, while they were very good musically and had\nflawless harmony, there simply was no anointing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dory\nand Jenny Pieters<\/span> and their daughters traveled as the\n\u201cSinging Stairsteps<\/span>.\u201d Their church background and\nupbringing was with the United Brethren.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They\nwere quite taken by the difference between those singers and musicians whose\nmusic was anointed, and those who were really good, but NOT anointed. It\nprovided us the opportunity to share with them the need to be baptized in the\nHoly Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not\nlong thereafter, we were scheduled to do a concert in San Diego. They went to\nan Assembly of God pastor and told him \u201cthey wanted an appointment to be\nbaptized in the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This\npastor had obviously not seen the significance of the word \u201ctarry\u201d as Jesus\nused it, and the request took him by surprise. Nevertheless, he set an\nappointed time for them to meet.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dory,\nJenny, and the girls were all in hot pursuit of everything God had for them. If\nit was there, and it meant they could advance beyond their present place of\nrelationship in God, they were going to have it, no matter what!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On\nthe day in question, and at the appointed time, they all met with the pastor,\nwho laid hands on each of them in succession. In succession, each of them\nreceived the baptism of Holy Spirit and began to speak in one language after\nanother.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\nforever altered the character and spirit of the music they sang, and from that\nday forward people began to be saved and baptized in Holy Spirit as they sang\nand shared the changes that had taken place in them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A\ncouple years after leaving Bible College, I moved to southern California and\nwas able to get a home across the street from the Pieters<\/span>.\nIt turned into an opportunity \u2014 compliments of the five daughters \u2014 to minister\nto kids in the neighborhood using the Pieters<\/span>\u2019\ngarage. We saw more than thirty kids from their neighborhood receive salvation,\nand then receive the baptism of Holy Spirit with the manifestation of speaking\nin tongues.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Baptism\nin \u2014 immersion into \u2014 Holy Spirit is so far reaching, it is almost hard to\nquantify it. We\u2019ve talked about Jesus\u2019 statement concerning the things that\ncome out of the abundance of the heart.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve\ntalked about James\u2019 admonitions concerning the ability of the tongue \u2014 for good\nor for evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking\nin tongues is the one clear evidence of a change of citizenship in the Kingdom\nof God. To be very clear, it is not the only evidence \u2014 and we\u2019ll get to those\nevidences as this series continues \u2014 but it is the first and primary evidence\nthat a change of citizenship has taken place. Before Jesus ascended into Heaven\nHe made the following promises.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mark 16:15-18<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>\u201cAnd He\nsaid unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every\ncreature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that\nbelieveth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that\nbelieve; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new\ntongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing,\nit shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall\nrecover.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well,\nI'd planned to do an in-depth breakdown of this passage today, but if I do it\nwill turn this into a super-long Coffee Break. There is a whole lot contained\nin Jesus' statements. That said, we can pick it up at this point next week. See\nyou then!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
