ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: GOING BEYOND, Part 6<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

December 19, 2014<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Most of the church world treats this as the Christmas season,\nbut this is not the season when Jesus Christ was born. As it turns out, from a\nhistorical and astronomical perspective, December 25th was the day on the\nJulian Calendar when the magi came bearing their gifts to the King of Kings --\na then-toddler of some two years of age. Next week we'll take a short break\nfrom this series to talk about that.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let's get on today with our foundation series -- and today we\nwill deal with the third kind of baptism -- the Baptism of Fire.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When\nJohn the Baptist began prophesying of Jesus, he made a statement that was\ninclusive of all three baptisms:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew\n3:11-12, KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that\ncometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he\nshall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with<\/i> fire: Whose fan is<\/i>\nin his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into\nthe garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My\ngrandmother related what happened to her and my grandfather, along with a group\nof folks from the Methodist church that Grandpa was pastoring<\/span>\nat the time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She\nsaid that they were unaware of Pentecost per se, or speaking in tongues, or\neven the term, \u201cbaptism in the Spirit.\u201d The secret was that they were hungry\nspiritually and in pursuit of ALL that God had for them. They had no\npreconceived notions or doctrines one way or another. They were just determined\nto have all that God had for them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

They\ngathered in their farmhouse (my grandparents were farmers) in Erie, North\nDakota one midweek evening with a few other families from their church. The\nyear was 1921. My grandmother related how as they were praying, she heard what\nsounded like an approaching tornado. The sound filled the room and the house\nwas vibrating with the sound of this \u201ctornado.\u201d Living on the Dakota plains,\nthe family was well aware of the storms that bring tornadoes, and the\ndevastation that often follows. She jumped to her feet from the chair where she\nhad been kneeling and went to look out the window.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nothing!\nThere was no sign of any wind or things blowing so she opened the door and\nlooked outside. It was as quiet as could be. The sound was entirely in the\nroom. She headed back to her chair, and as she did so, a tiny cloud of fire\nappeared in the middle of the room. It began to break apart into tiny little\npieces (or tongues) of fire which set down on the heads of each of the gathered\nworshipers in the room.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My\ngrandmother related to me how that as a tongue of fire or flame would touch the\nhead of someone, they would immediately burst out speaking in an unknown\ntongue. It followed in quick succession until everyone \u2014 including her \u2014 was\nspeaking in tongues. It continued nonstop throughout the evening and into the\nearly morning hours.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

No\none left the house without their lives having been radically transformed in\nevery way from that moment forth. Some of those who were there that night left\ntheir farming, disposed of their farms and in the months and years that\nfollowed became \u201cmissionaries\u201d \u2014 apostles \u2014 who went forth abroad ministering\nin African countries, South America and other places as well.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My\ngrandfather up to this time had been noted for being fairly quiet and a\nretiring sort of guy. His preaching and teaching had been \u201cnominal.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Never\nagain!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\ntransformation that took place in my grandparents caused Grandpa to become a\nkind of firebrand \u2014 certainly by the standards of the Methodist church at the\ntime! They kicked him out of the pulpit and stripped him of his ministerial\nstatus as a \u201cheretic.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He\ndecided that the structured church just didn\u2019t fit with what God was doing and\nsaying. His ministry continued, but in his home instead. For much of the next\nfifty years of his life, he ministered out of his home, both there in Erie, ND,\nthen in Detroit Lakes, MN, and finally in Madison, WI until the health of my\ngrandmother began to fail.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

My\ngrandparents not only experienced the \u201cBaptism of Fire\u201d in a visible sense on\nthe night that they were baptized in the Holy Spirit, they shortly thereafter\nbegan to experience the fire touching the family. Months after their initial\nexperience with Holy Spirit, their then-six-year-old son, Alvin, came down with\ndouble pneumonia and died.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Grandma\nfelt that she needed something more. The thrill, the passion, the fire that had\naccompanied them the night they were baptized seemed to be lacking so, after\ntaking six-year-old Alvin\u2019s body out to the barn, she went into her bedroom,\nclosed the door, pulled the shades and got on her knees. As she waited on the\nLord, she made a promise to Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cLord,\nif you\u2019ll raise my son back to life, I\u2019ll give him to you for the ministry.\u201d It\nwas a kind of \u201cHannah\u201d dedication \u2014 the same kind that Hannah did with Samuel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Grandma\nstayed on her knees praying until she was assured in her spirit that God had\nheard and answered. She got to her knees, raised the shades, opened the door\nand went out to the barn just as the nurse was arriving by horse and buggy from\nFargo to certify Alvin\u2019s death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Together\nthey went to the barn, arriving in time to see the color flooding back into his\nface and him beginning to breathe normally.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nnext day, young Alvin was back playing like any normal six-year-old. Though he\nhad been dead for the better part of a day, the Lord had raised him back to\nlife, instilling in him at the same time an apostolic destiny that would begin\nto play out in the years to come as he took our family to the far north to\nbring the message of the Kingdom \u2014 against all odds \u2014 to native communities.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nevent that began to play out that night in 1921 in Erie, ND with the Baptism of\nFire would repeat itself in the late 1950\u2019s and early 1960\u2019s in Barrow, Alaska\nwith a fire that would reach from the eastern coasts of Siberia to Greenland as\nEskimos from virtually every native tribe in the arctic received Jesus Christ\nas their Lord and Savior and were baptized in the Holy Spirit with signs\nfollowing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve\nalready talked about the purging that takes place with the fire. Consider the\nevent that took place with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nking, Nebuchadnezzar, had ordered that everyone bow down to his image.\nShadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to anyone, any image or any god\nbesides the Lord God. The king, in his anger at their refusal, ordered that the\nfurnace he had prepared be heated to seven times its normal heat. He then\nordered that the three Hebrew companions be bound and cast into the furnace.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A\nrather unique and very prophetic picture unfolded. The three companions were\nthrown into the fire. Their bonds were consumed in an instant but they were\ncompletely unhurt to the point that there wasn\u2019t even the smell of smoke on\nthem. Those who bound them and threw them into the fire died themselves by\nvirtue of their having to get so close to the fire in order to obey their\norders.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s\nthe best part! Nebuchadnezzar was astonished because, not only didn\u2019t Shadrach,\nMeshach and Abednego die, they were walking about in the fire with the Lord and\nenjoying the fellowship with Him. It is precisely the picture we have with the\nday of Pentecost and the baptism of fire.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nbaptism of fire isn\u2019t for our hurt or our destruction: it is for our fellowship\nwith the Lord. The fire only burns away the things that keep us in bondage.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Remember\nwhat put Adam and Eve in bondage to the Serpent and brought them under the\ncurse? Yup. You got it! The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Not only\ndid Adam and Eve suffer the bondage of the Serpent and become subject to death,\nthey lost their ready access to fellowship with the Lord. The only way back to\nthat place of fellowship, and access to the Tree of Life, was going to be\nthrough the sword \u2014 the Word of God \u2014 AND the fire!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Shadrach,\nMeshach and Abednego refused to allow the intimidation of death, or the fear of\nthe king, or the social stigma of not \u201cfollowing the herd\u201d and bowing down to\nthe image along with the rest of the people, to alter their fellowship with the\nLord. So confident were they in their relationship with Him that they could\nboldly say to the king,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cO Nebuchadnezzar, we are\nnot careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve\nis able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us\nout of thine<\/span> hand, O king<\/span>.\u201d <\/span>(Daniel\n3:16-17, KJV)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They\nwere not afraid of the \u201cbaptism\u201d of fire \u2014 and \u201cbaptism\u201d is exactly what it\nwas. They were immersed, covered over, \u201cwhelmed\u201d (to use J.H. Thayer\u2019s\ndescription) by the fire.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There\u2019s\nanother prophetic picture with these three \u201cprinces\u201d that we need to pay\nattention to. Shadrach (whose Hebrew name was Hananiah<\/span>),\nMeshach (whose Hebrew name was Mishael<\/span>) and Abednego\n(whose Hebrew name was Azariah<\/span>) were all \u2014 along with\nDaniel, their contemporary \u2014 seed, descendants of the royal household of David.\nThey demonstrated for us just what it means to be of royal seed. Despite their\ncaptivity in the natural sense, they showed a spiritual authority in God that\nwas superior to the earthly authority of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\n"immersion" in the furnace of fire did not destroy them; it only\npurified, it removed the cords and the bonds that had held them captive.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some\nof you have heard me share this before, but take a quick look at something that\nPaul writes to Timothy:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

II Timothy 2:15-16 <\/span><\/u><\/b>(RAC Translation & Amplification)<\/span><\/u>:<\/span> <\/span>"<\/span>Be instantly responsive to the Lord, making yourself available\nto Him in the midst of the crucible, a tried and tested laborer who has no fear\nof being examined \u2013 one who, by virtue of God\u2019s testing and the time spent in\nthe crucible with Him, knows the proven Word of Truth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

"Stand aloof from, and avoid the untested, untried \u201cword\u201d\nwhich comes forth from those who would propagate speculation and create their\nown doctrines. These profane speculations and so-called \u201cwords\u201d are empty\nbabblings which will only serve to advance ungodliness;<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"And those who spread these doctrines will only yield a\ngangrene pasture \u2013 a source of poison to those who ingest their \u201cword\u201d\u2026.."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s\ntake a little deeper look at this instruction by Paul.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBe instantly responsive to the Lord.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>That\u2019s\na mandate for all of us ALL the time! But look where the requirement for\nresponsiveness comes: in the crucible<\/b>! This is another picture of being\nin the fire \u2014 and this is very distinctly a part of the baptism of fire. \u201cBe\ninstantly responsive \u2014 making yourself available to Him!\u201d The baptism of fire\nis not just for our purification and\/or for the removal of all of the residue\nor contamination from having eaten of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil, it is that process in us by which we listen ONLY to Holy Spirit\u2019s voice\nand \u201cmake ourselves available to Him\u201d for a multitude of opportunities,\nministry, giving, sharing, etc., ESPECIALLY WHEN WE LEAST FEEL LIKE DOING\nSO, OR WHEN WE LEAST FEEL QUALIFIED!!<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Consider\nsomething that Paul wrote in his second letter to the Corinthian Ekklesia<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

II Corinthians 11:21-31 KJV<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>\u201cI speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.\nHowbeit whereinsoever<\/span> any is bold, (I speak\nfoolishly,) I am bold also. Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so\nam I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (I\nspeak as a fool) I am more; in labours<\/span> more abundant,\nin stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.\nThrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck,\na night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings<\/span>\noften, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own\ncountrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the\nwilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness\nand painfulness, in watchings<\/span> often, in hunger and\nthirst, in fastings<\/span> often, in cold and nakedness.\nBeside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care\nof all the churches.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

"Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I\nburn not?<\/span> <\/span>If I must needs glory, I\nwill glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. The God and Father of\nour Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth<\/span>\nthat I lie not.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And\nwe think we go through stuff? The list of things that Paul experienced is\nenough to last any of us several lifetimes \u2014 and he\u2019s writing about experiences\nthat took place within a 20-year or so time frame. ALL of these events took\nplace because he responded to the Lord, went where Holy Spirit directed, and\npreached the Kingdom, laying foundations where none had been laid.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paul\ndid not allow the sequence of events, the disasters, the perils, the\npersecutions, the weariness of the constant travels, or even the loss of his\nfamily to stop him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Consider\nthis: before he could become a Pharisee, Paul had to be married. It was part of\nthe sign of maturity and responsibility for every Pharisee. Yet we see from his\nwritings that his wife had to have left him, and he says,<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArt thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou\nloosed from a wife? seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not\nsinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall\nhave trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.\u201d<\/span>\n<\/span>(I\nCorinthians 7:21-22, KJV)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Everything\nwe see recorded in these passages from Paul\u2019s letters to the Corinthians came\nin the midst of his total, unreserved, unabashed responsiveness to the\ndirection of Holy Spirit. The fire that bathed Paul allowed him to lay the same\nfoundations and patterns for growth and development in believers that we walk\nin today!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\nhave a little more to share on the baptism of fire, and we will return to these\ndiscussions on foundations the week after Christmas.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
