ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: DEALING WITH FEAR, Part 7<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

October 3, 2014<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When we began this series, we opened up with the initiating\nplace for the families of fear at the time of the temptation of Eve and Adam's\nsubsequent partaking of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and\nEvil, and the consequences that followed. In #5, we talked about David's song\nin Psalm 34, and his statement, <\/span><\/b>"and He delivered me from all my fears." <\/span><\/b>Let's\nconsider a few more of David's songs.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the most significant Psalms all of us are familiar with is\nthe 23rd<\/sup> Psalm. I\u2019ve often been a critic of preachers who use\nthis Psalm at funerals because it is not a Psalm for dying; it is a Psalm for\nliving. Fifteen separate statements occur in this Psalm. Each of the fifteen\nrepresent steps that describe the process through which the Lord takes His\npeople \u2013 those that continue to respond \u2013 from the initial point of their\nrelationship with Him <\/span>(The\nLord is my Shepherd)<\/span><\/b> to maturity <\/span>(and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever<\/b>).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the most important steps in our overcoming and growth\nprocess is being delivered from the Fear of Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

David makes the statement,<\/span> \u201cYea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of\nDeath, I will fear<\/span> no Evil\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No one was more qualified than David to speak from experience with\nsuch a statement of faith. Today\u2019s coffee break is not about the 23rd<\/sup> Psalm\n(maybe we will get a chance to talk more about that in later coffee breaks) but\nabout what David learned about the nature of the Fear of Evil.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve already discussed in a couple previous coffee breaks the\nfact that the Fear of Evil is rooted in eating from the Tree of the Knowledge\nof Good and Evil. We\u2019ve already mentioned that religion is one of the primary\nsymptoms of this fear. There are a whole lot more symptoms, and David gives us\nsome real insight.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Take a look at the 49th<\/sup> Psalm. In verse 5, the KJV\ntranslators erred in translating the Hebrew <\/span>aw.kabe<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/b>as \u201cheel.\u201d It actually properly translates as \u201ca\nlier<\/span> in wait.\u201d Let me therefore retranslate the verse\nfor you like this: <\/span>\u201cWhy should I fear\nevil in the midst of days when I am surrounded by those who lie in wait for\nme.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It suddenly becomes clear that one of the usual symptoms of the\nFear of Evil is focusing on whether one is surrounded by those who seek their\nlife. I\u2019ve got a description for this, and maybe you see it as well.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Conspiracy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Conspiracy theories. How about the \u201cblack helicopter crowd?\u201d\nHow about Y2K? We can really take this to extremes, but you get the picture.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without breaking down every single verse of the 49th<\/sup> Psalm,\nit quickly becomes clear that some of the symptoms of the Fear of Evil are:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Trusting in wealth or riches. From this we can extrapolate<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Worrying about not having enough.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Boasting of one\u2019s abundance.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Prolonging one\u2019s lifespan by whatever means and avoiding death.\n(Hence, the Fear of Death.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Making sure that their names are put on monuments, buildings,\nplaques, carvings, statues and the like so that posterity remembers their\nnames.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Leaving their wealth to foolish causes.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Attempting to ensure that their heirs remember the things\nthey\u2019ve said, no matter how foolish those sayings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Skip back to the 41st<\/sup> Psalm, and you get some more\nof what David saw.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Beginning in verse 5 (Amplified Bible), <\/span>\u201cMy enemies speak evil of me saying, \u2018When\nwill he die and his name perish?\u2019 And if one comes to see me, he speaks\nfalsehood and empty words, while his heart gathers mischievous gossip [against\nme]; when he goes away, he tells it abroad. All who hate me whisper together\nabout me; against me do they devise my hurt \u2013 imagining the worst for me. An\nevil disease, say they, is poured out upon him and cleaves fast to him; and now\nthat he is bedfast, he will not rise again. Even my own familiar friend in whom\nI trusted [relied on and was confident in], who ate of my bread, has lifted up\nhis heel against me.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Once again, we see the fear of conspiracy against the one who\nfears evil. The list of symptoms of the Fear of Evil continues in this short\npassage:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Excessive focus on the activities of one\u2019s enemies.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Worry about Gossip and whispering behind one\u2019s back.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Fearing false accusations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Being afraid of being cursed \u2013 particularly with diseases.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- Fear of Betrayal.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the 56th<\/sup> Psalm, David rather humorously, but in\na strong declaration of faith in God, arrests his own fear of evil like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBy the help of God I\nwill praise His Word; on God I lean, rely, and confidently put my trust; I will\nnot fear; what can man who is flesh do to me? All day long they twist my words<\/span> (the Fear of Man) <\/span>and trouble my affairs; all their thoughts are\nagainst me for evil and my hurt. They gather themselves together, they hide\nthemselves, they watch my steps, even as they have (expectantly) waited for my\nlife<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>(Fear of Death)<\/span> <\/span>They think to escape with iniquity, and shall\nthey?\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thus we see that these fears come directly from the Fear of Evil:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- The Fear of Conspiracy.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- The Fear of Man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

-- The Fear of Death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let me break away from the Psalms, now, and take a different\napproach.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a Coffee Break series published some eight years ago, I noted\nthat in the midst of some studies on the makeup, nature and character of the\nseven condemned nations that occupied ancient Canaan, I discovered a direct\nparallel between each of the characteristics of these nations, God\u2019s command to\nIsrael to wipe them out, and John\u2019s seven letters to the seven Ekklesias<\/span> in Revelation 2 & 3. I won't revisit that\ndiscussion today other than very briefly in the following observations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The seven nations that once occupied Canaan were: the Hittites,\nthe Hivites<\/span>, the Amorites, the Jebusites<\/span>,\nthe Perizzites<\/span>, the Girgashites<\/span>\nand the Canaanites. Each of them had certain national characteristics,\nmethodologies, military tactics and lifestyles that differed from one another.\nThough they shared a pretty common heathen worship of the same gods, each of\nthese nations had distinctive characteristics that differentiated themselves\nfrom each other.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Hittites were a fierce, militaristic, barbaric people who\ndoted on using the Fear of Death over their people and over the enemies they\nsubdued. The Amorites feared evil of every kind. They preferred the mountains\nand hills where their elevated dwelling allowed them to see any encroachment or\napproaching enemy. They used the Fear of Evil as a weapon against their\nenemies, and were a proud, arrogant, extremely religious people. The Perizzites<\/span>, on the other hand, were a controlling people\nwho parlayed a form of \u201cdemocracy\u201d as a means of ruling their populace. The\nFear of Man was their hallmark. Each of the seven nations suffered from the\nthree families of fear, but the three just named had these fears as their\ncentral identifying characteristic.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve said all that to say this.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Amorites expanded their worship of Baal, Ashteroth<\/span>\nand a pantheon of minor false deities into an art. They played it to the hilt.\nMany of their kings were also high priests of Baal. One such Amorite king was Ethbaal<\/span>, whose name literally meant, \u201cliving with and under\nthe favor of Baal.\u201d Ethbaal<\/span> had a daughter whom he\ngave in marriage to the king of Israel in order to secure a covenant of peace\nbetween their two nations. The daughter\u2019s name was Jezebel, and she was given\nto Ahab, the king of Israel. (We discussed the Spirit of Jezebel in an in-depth\nseries about a year ago.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jezebel \u2013 like all of the Amorites \u2013 not only suffered from the\nFear of Evil, she used it like a weapon against her husband, and against all\nwho rose up against her. She was a usurper of authority \u2013 and particularly, the\nauthority of God. Jezebel, more than any other person in Scripture, epitomizes\nthe extremes to which the Fear of Evil takes people. She parlayed the Fear of\nEvil into deception as an art.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the first events we see her making use of that fear is with\nNaboth<\/span>, the Jezreelite<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The story goes like this (see 1 Kings 21): Ahab, the king of\nIsrael and Jezebel\u2019s husband, sees a very fruitful vineyard that catches his\neye and decides he wants to buy it for himself. He approaches Naboth<\/span> to sell it, and Naboth<\/span>\ndeclines to sell because it was passed on to him as an inheritance from his\nfather. Ahab starts pouting over Naboth\u2019s<\/span> refusal to\nhim. I mean, after all, Ahab was the KING! No one should refuse his request!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jezebel sees her husband's pout, asks him what the problem is, and\nonce she finds out the situation says to Ahab, \u201cNo problem, Hon! I\u2019ve got this\none taken care of. Stand by. I\u2019ll give you this vineyard as my gift to you.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Whereupon Jezebel sets about to conspire against Naboth<\/span>. Remember what we talked about earlier \u2013 where\nconspiracy is a hallmark of the Fear of Evil? Anyhow, Jezebel finds a couple of\ncitizens of good standing in the community, leaders with reputations to uphold,\nand persuades them to make accusation against Naboth<\/span>.\nMeanwhile, she proclaims a fast in the city where Naboth<\/span>\nlives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then she calls for a great public gathering where the city is\ngoing to honor Naboth<\/span> as \u201cMan of the Year,\u201d or some\nsuch tommyrot. Naboth<\/span>, of course, gets suckered into\nattending this public gathering. After all, he is going to be honored before\nhis peers! Right?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nope. The two men of standing in the community, who themselves had\nbeen deceived by the letters they had received from Jezebel, rose up at this\npublic celebration and accused Naboth<\/span> of treason.\nWell! Suddenly the Man of the Year ceremony turns into a stoning by the\ngathered crowd, and just like that, Naboth<\/span> is dead!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

See what the Fear of Evil does to a person? They get sucked into\ncommitting murder under the guise of \u201cdoing good.\u201d Well? Wasn\u2019t it a good thing\nto put a traitor to the king to death?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Having been accused and put to death for treason, Naboth\u2019s<\/span> vineyard is now available for legal seizure by the\ngovernment. Jezebel, of course, takes the property and presents it as her gift\nto her husband, Ahab, who instantly becomes her slave for life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

See what the Fear of Evil does to a person? The picture of Jezebel\nas a manifestation of the Fear of Evil takes on many other dimensions, however.\nIn II Kings 9, we have the picture of the king of Judah, Jehu, executing the\njudgment of God upon Jezebel. When the king of Israel, Joram<\/span>,\nwho is one of Ahab and Jezebel\u2019s sons, sees Jehu coming, he says to Jehu, <\/span>\u201cIs it peace, Jehu?\u201d<\/span> <\/span>Jehu answers him directly and says<\/span>, <\/span><\/b>\u201cWhat peace so long as the whoredoms<\/span>\nof thy mother, Jezebel, and her witchcrafts are so many?\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That simple and direct answer of Jehu\u2019s gives us a glimpse of a\nwoman who took sexual perversion to such extremes as can hardly be imagined.\nLinked to her sexual perversion, and the idolatry she led Israel into, was the\npractice of witchcraft, manipulation, the casting of curses, and the putting to\ndeath of many hundreds of the prophets of God who had populated Israel as God\u2019s\nrepresentatives.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today isn\u2019t the time to get into the nature of witchcraft, nor the\nmany forms of it seen in Scripture, but suffice it to say that Jezebel\nintroduced a horrific dimension of this evil as an extension of the Fear of\nEvil into the life and culture of the nation of Israel \u2013 a dimension that\nultimately caused Israel\u2019s disintegration as a nation and its carrying away\ninto captivity. The sexual perversion she brought included homosexual activity,\nlesbian activity, bestiality, sado<\/span>-masochism, and\nvirtually every licentious and lustful sexual act one can imagine as the fruit\nof fear, incorporated into the worship of Baal.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In Revelation 2, we see the Fear of Evil manifested as the spirit\nof Jezebel when John writes to the Ekklesia<\/span> in\nThyatira saying, <\/span>\u201cNotwithstanding, I\nhave a few things against thee because thou sufferest<\/span>\nthat woman Jezebel, which calleth<\/span> herself a\nprophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat\nthings sacrificed unto idols\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is where this spirit affects the body of Christ terribly in\nthis age. The Fear of Evil works hand in hand with and through the spirit of\nJezebel, usurping the Word and the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ in\nchurches and fellowships in the form of preachers and teachers who lead people\nastray with doctrines of demons and teachings that entice them into a\n\u201ccomfortable\u201d Gospel.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This spirit parades in evangelical churches, traditional churches,\nPentecostal churches, home fellowships and informal gatherings \u2013 and let us not\nforget the cult groups and churches with the oddball doctrines \u2013 foisting\nitself as the authority of the Lord, often uttering prophecies that make folks\u2019\nears tingle, and their flesh feel good \u2013 all the while leading them down the\nprimrose path to death and destruction, and cheating them out of a genuine\nlove-relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

John\u2019s prophecy to Thyatira was dead on! He said that Jezebel\nteaches and seduces \u201cmy servants\u201d to commit fornication. While one could easily\nimagine that as preachers going out and having affairs with women other than\ntheir wives, that\u2019s probably the last possible usage of this phrase. John\nwasn\u2019t talking about physical acts; he was talking about spiritual fornication:<\/b> spiritual\nadultery.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Put very simply, spiritual fornication or adultery is the effort\nto force folks to live under legalism, laws and commandments \u2013 in short, the\nLaw \u2013 while preaching Grace, Mercy and Love. One is supposedly \u201cmarried\u201d to the\nLord, but living under legalistic conditions and traditions of man. In truth,\none either lives in a love-relationship with the Lord, or they live under the\nLaw. To try to do both causes one to commit adultery or fornication against the\nLord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the single greatest attribute or symptom of the Fear of\nEvil and it permeates the body of Christ today. No fear is greater than this\none, and no deliverance from any evil spirit is more dramatic in the change it\neffects in the lives of people than to be set free from the Fear of Evil.\nDeliverance from the Fear of Evil is available to every single person, and it\nsimply begins by saying, \u201cFather, in the name of Jesus Christ, I submit myself\nto you totally for your guidance, your direction, and your Truth. Deliver me\nfrom every symptom, and every evil and wicked spirit that comes from this\nfamily of the Fear of Evil.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
