ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: GOING BEYOND, Part 4<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/p>\n

Dealing with the formulaic approach to water baptism has been\nthe bane of the church world. It has caused sincere, committed believers in\nChrist to lose sight of how critical this foundation is to their being able to\n"go on beyond" into the realms that await. The formulaic approach has\nblocked many believers from going on into the dimensions of the Spirit that\nJesus Christ has simply because they never availed themselves of the law of\nliberty that comes with water baptism.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let's\npick up where we left off last week (and I'm running a bit long again today in\norder to finish this picture of water baptism):<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In\nwriting to the Romans, Paul says, <\/span>\u201cDon\u2019t you realize that\nthose of us who have been baptized \u2014 immersed \u2014 into the Anointed One and His\nAnointing have been baptized into His death?\u201d <\/span>(Romans 6:3, RAC\nTranslation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let\nme pick up again with the amplified translation from Romans 6 that we used in\nour last time of sharing on Baptism.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And\nPaul continues: <\/span>\u201cTherefore, and as a consequence thereof, we are buried and put\ninto the grave through baptism so that our old man sees death. It follows,\ntherefore, that in the same way Christ was raised up from the dead by the\nvisible Glory of the Father, we also should walk and live renewed and refreshed\n(with His breath) of life.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>(Romans 6:4 RAC\nTranslation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s\nwhere Paul spells things out in specific detail.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cFor if we have been planted together, germinating as seeds in\nthe likeness and for<\/span>m of His death, we shall also spring forth in (and with\n His) resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man and corrupted DNA is\n crucified with him, that the body (of law) of sin might be annulled and\n destroyed in order to free us from having to serve and be under the Law of Sin\n and Death.<\/span>\n <\/o:p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor he who has died is freed from sin (and the laws which\n determine that which is sin). Now if we are truly dead with Christ, we\n believe and know that we shall also live with Him:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/sup>Knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die\nagain; death has no more authority, dominion, control or power over\nHim. For when He died, He died killing off sin and death once and for all:\nand by virtue of the fact that He lives, He lives in and for the destiny and\npurposes of God.\u201d <\/span>(Romans\n6:5-10, RAC Translation and Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nhave a question for you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WHAT\nin any of these statements Paul makes gives folks the idea that they need to go\nback and continually repent for events that were not actually a part of their\nlives? Let\u2019s take something we\u2019ve come to refer to as \u201cgenerational\nrepentance.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This\nteaching and practice stems from a principle established under the Law of Moses\nin which God made it clear that the sins of the father were passed on to the\nchildren of the fourth generation \u2014 and in the case of children born outside of\nwedlock, to the tenth generation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First,\nlet\u2019s take a look at the Law of Moses, and what God originally said concerning\nthe sins (or iniquities) of the fathers:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Exodus\n20:5-6<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cThou shalt<\/span> not bow down thyself to\nthem, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the\niniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation\nof them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love\nme, and keep my commandments.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Numbers\n14:18<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cThe Lord is longsuffering and of great mercy, forgiving\niniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the\niniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth\ngeneration.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Deuteronomy\n23:2-3<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cA bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; <\/i><\/b>even\nto his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord.\nAn Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even\nto their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the\nLord.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now,\nhere\u2019s the other side of this picture:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Deuteronomy\n7:9<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cKnow therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful\nGod, which keepeth<\/span> covenant and mercy with them that\nlove him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nChronicles 16:15-17<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cBe ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he\ncommanded to a thousand generations; Even of the covenant which he made with\nAbraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a\nlaw, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nphrase which occurs in Exodus 20:6:(<\/span>showing mercy unto\nthousands of them that love me<\/span>) really misses it in our English translations. Even under\nthe Law of Moses, the generation of \u201cthem that love me\u201d was free from the\ngenerational curse of the sins of their fathers. We can better translate this\nphrase out of Hebrew like this: <\/span>\u201cshowing mercy unto\nthousands of generations of them that love me.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Put\nin the same context as the first part of what God was saying to Israel,<\/span><\/o:p>\n<\/span>\u201cI the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of\nthe fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that\nhate me; <\/sup>And showing mercy unto thousands of generations of\nthem that love me, and keep my commandments.\u201d<\/span>\n<\/o:p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\n may not be immediately clear at first glance, but what God was saying to Israel\n was this: <\/span>\u201cEven though your father, and your father\u2019s father may have\n lived under the generational curse of your ancestor before them, because they\n did not turn to me and continued in the ways of their fathers, you are free\n from that curse and the iniquities which had been visited upon your fathers\n because you love me and keep my commandments.\u201d <\/span>(RAC Translation\n & Amplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If\nthat was true under the Law of Moses, how is it that we still find it necessary\ntoday to drag up the sins of our fathers when we have a Covenant in Christ\nJesus which has freed us from the Law of Sin and Death?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s\nput this another way.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For\nall those who are in Christ Jesus, we were with Him when He was hanging on the\nCross! All of our sins, along with the sins of our fathers, our grandfathers,\nour great-grandfathers, and every generation before them came upon Jesus as He\nhung there. When He died, He took those sins with Him to the grave.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During\nthe three days his body lay in the grave, He took our sins, our iniquities, our\nsicknesses, our infirmities, our diseases and the curse of death that hung over\nthe human race and laid them all at Satan\u2019s feet!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THAT,\nfolks, is exactly what happens with us in water baptism when we are buried with\nHim! We are with Him. We are IN Him! EVERYTHING of our past \u2014 including the\nsins of our fathers, and the iniquities visited upon us as a result \u2014 gets laid\nat Satan\u2019s feet. He gets back what He so treacherously dumped on us!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now\ncomes the Resurrection! Listen to how the apostle Paul puts it as he writes to\nthe Philippians.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Philippians\n3:8d-11<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cThat I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own\nrighteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of\nChrist, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and\nthe power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made\nconformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the\nresurrection of the dead.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Do\nyou see it? In water baptism we are in Him \u2014 NOT in our own (self)\nrighteousness which gets measured by the Law with its penalties and curse.\nRather, we are in Him by, through and because of His faith; and that faith\ncomes from Father God by means of the anointing that is in Jesus.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\nobjective here is that \u2014 as Paul puts it \u2014 we have know and have the revelation\nof Him, His onoma<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nHis character and makeup. But there\u2019s much, much more! It isn\u2019t simply that we\nhave a revelation of Jesus in water baptism: we also receive a revelation of\nthe miraculous power and might released in His resurrection.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And\nstill there is more!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\nget to be a partaker of the sufferings He endured \u2014 the beatings, the stripes, the\ndisfigurement that occurred when His beard was ripped out of his face, the\nunutterable pain that occurred when the crown of thorns was shoved into His\nskull.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How\nare we a partaker of those sufferings, you ask? By receiving what He paid for\non our behalf when all that took place. Every single stripe of the cat-o-nine\ntails that ripped the flesh on His body represents a disease or an infirmity\nthat He took for us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\ndisfigurement that took place when His beard was ripped out, leaving loose\nflesh hanging from His face, His chin and His neck paid for the disfiguring\ninjuries that men and women suffer in today\u2019s so-called \u201cadvanced\u201d society as a\nresult of diseases or accidents of one kind or another.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\npain and suffering that occurred with the planting of the crown of thorns into\nHis skull paid for all of the mental anguish, the torment of our minds, the\nagonies we suffer with the thoughts of the past, the concerns of the present\nand the future.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Are\nyou now beginning to grasp the significance of getting to <\/span>\u201cknow the fellowship<\/span> <\/span>(Greek: koinonia<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>: <\/span>partnership and participation with<\/span><\/u>) <\/span>of His sufferings?\u201d<\/span> <\/span>We partner with Him;\nwe partake of those sufferings by being IN Him when we are immersed in the\nwaters of baptism.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let\nme pause here for a minute to take you to Isaiah\u2019s prophecy concerning Jesus:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Isaiah\n53:3-5<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cHe is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and\nacquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was\ndespised, and we esteemed him not.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Surely he hath borne our griefs<\/span>, and\ncarried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and\nafflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for\nour iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his\nstripes we are healed.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Isaiah\nwas able to see some 700 years or so into the future, and what he sees is\nexactly what took place with Jesus\u2019 suffering, the betrayal, all that He took\nupon Himself, and  all that He accomplished on our behalf.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But\nIsaiah also saw far into the future to our present day. Here\u2019s how the Hebrew\ntext describes the picture:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He is disdained and scorned, and considered as having ceased to\nexist by men: a man of anguish and pain, and has known grief by seeing and\nexperiencing it; and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was disdained and\nscorned, and we maliciously fabricated, invented and treated His suffering and\ndeath as void.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Surely He has suffered and accepted as His own our maladies, our\nanxieties, our calamities, our disease and sicknesses, and carried our anguish,\npain and grief: yet we fabricated and maliciously invented His being stricken\nviolently, beaten, punished, wounded and slaughtered as if by God -- choosing\nto believe that God browbeat, demeaned and looked down upon Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But He was broken and profaned for our rebellion, our revolt, our\napostasy and our [religious] quarrel against God; He was crushed, oppressed and\nsmitten, and (emotionally) broken into pieces for our perversity, our evil, our\nmischief, sins and faults; the breaking and ridiculing of our peace, our\nwelfare, our prosperity, our health and our safety was upon Him; and with His\nbloodied and blue wounds we are cured, mended, repaired and made thoroughly\nwhole.<\/span> <\/span>(Isaiah 53:3-5, RAC Translation &\nAmplification)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\nsee the difference in the picture, don\u2019t you? Isaiah is actually seeing how the\nworld today treats Jesus, despite all that He did on our behalf! The world \u2014\nand a whole fistful of folks who call themselves Christians \u2014 still consider\nthat God demeaned and looked down on Him. So many folks today treat His death\nas null and void when and where it applies to every aspect of their lives.\nJesus left NOTHING undone!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Listen\nto how Paul finishes with his explanation of what takes place. He wraps all of\nthis up with this phrase: <\/span>\u201cbeing made conformable\nto His death.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There\u2019s\na 64-dollar word for you! C<\/span>onformable. It comes from the Greek word: summorphos<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>.<\/span> It translates literally to: <\/span>being jointly formed; fashioned with and like<\/span><\/u>.<\/span>\n<\/o:p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Understand?\n We are jointly formed with Jesus Christ INTO His death. He dies. We die with\n Him. The old us is dead. What used to exist of us is now nothing more than a\n corpse. Jesus has died and is buried in a tomb. We have been formed INTO Him so\n that as He died, so did we.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In\nthe same way that Jesus\u2019 death finished the past, the sin, the sufferings, the\ndiseases and everything that went with the curse that came upon the human race,\nour having been jointly formed and fashioned like Him, means that our past \u2014\nand all the consequences of the sins, the iniquities of our fathers, the\ndiseases that have plagued us, the infirmities of our flesh, the poverty that\ncame with the curse \u2014 and death itself! \u2014 has been finished IN US!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But\nthat\u2019s only the first part of baptism. That\u2019s the dying and burial part. But we\ndon\u2019t remain in the grave! The power of the Resurrection has been made\navailable to us. Here\u2019s what Jesus said about it when He was talking to Martha:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

John\n11:25-26<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cI am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me,\nthough he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth<\/span>\nand believeth in me shall never die. Believest<\/span> thou\nthis?\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paul\ndeals with this when he writes his letter to the Ekklesia<\/span>\nin Ephesus:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ephesians\n2:4-7<\/span><\/u>: <\/span>\u201cBut God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he\nloved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with\nChrist, (by grace ye are saved;)And hath raised us up together, and made us sit\ntogether in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he\nmight show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through\nChrist Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\ncouldn\u2019t be any clearer! We were dead with our lives measured by the Law of Sin\nand Death. But Jesus incorporated us with Him when He died. We were woven into\nHis being so that when He died, carrying our sins, we died at the same time.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\ndidn\u2019t exit Him, and He didn\u2019t eject us when He was raised from the dead. Paul\nuses an interesting word in the Greek text when he says that God <\/span>\u201chath quickened us together with Christ.\u201d<\/span> The Greek word\nin this instance is: suzoopoieo<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span>,\nand it means: <\/span>to reanimate, or to\nmake one alive together (at the same time)<\/span><\/u>. But our resurrection doesn\u2019t stop\nwith our being raised from the dead (what which occurs when we are raised out\nof the water). Father God continued the \u201craising up\u201d together IN Christ, and\nhas made us to sit together \u2014 WITH Him, and IN Him \u2014 in Heavenly places, in the\nanointing of the Anointed One, the Lord Jesus Christ!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THAT, my\nfriends is what takes place when we are baptized in water!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
