ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: DEALING WITH FEAR, Part 6<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/p>\n\n

The Fear of Man is one of the biggest \u201cbiggies\u201d that infect and\naffect human behavior. It\u2019s a topic that I can\u2019t even begin to cover adequately\nin a few coffee break sessions like these, but it deserves more than a simple\nonce-over.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Despite the fact that I had seen the Holy Spirit moving\nmiraculously in my life from childhood, hearing and listening to a lifetime of\ncriticisms and accusations from others about my supposedly being \u201csuper\nspiritual\u201d created within me a need for acceptance.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

So I\u2019m odd. OK? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No argument. It\u2019s taken years for me to accept\n that and be joyful in the fact that the Lord has done things with me, and taken\n me places very few folks ever get to experience. That joy hasn\u2019t always been\n there, however. Being gifted by the Lord can be a real pain if you listen to\n the lies that come out of the Fear of Man. And I have been gifted by the Lord \u2013\n from my youth on.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Being gifted musically has sometimes made me the target of others\nwho are jealous over the fact that I can play dozens of instruments. When I was\nin public school, my teachers decided I was gifted academically. I skipped half\nof third grade and half of fourth grade and did both years in one year. Then my\nseventh-grade teacher decided it was a waste of time for me to be in that class\nand advanced me mid-year into the eighth grade.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

When I was finishing eighth grade (that same school year), my\nteacher decided they needed to use me as part of an experiment the state of\nAlaska was conducting. My folks thought it was a great idea. (The state of\nAlaska has since discontinued this experiment, but it lasted for something like\nsix to ten years.) Instead of going on to high school, they put me directly\ninto college courses with the University of Nebraska. I was getting college\ncredit at the same time I should have been in high school. By the time I was\neighteen years old, I already had four years of college \u2013 three with the\nUniversity of Nebraska, and one with Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachie,\nTexas. The result was that I never got my high school diploma, but I was\naccepted at Bethany Bible College and later at Fuller Theological Seminary\nwithout that diploma.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In the years that followed, whenever I applied for some top-level\njob I knew I could do in my sleep, employers always asked for my college\ndiploma. It was nothing but a miracle of the Lord that put me working for NASA\nwith America\u2019s top scientists and engineers at Lockheed when I didn\u2019t even have\na high school diploma, much less a college degree in engineering.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It was weird. I never had a problem with employment in those early\nyears, but people always asked me for my certificates and diplomas. I really\nbegan to want those things. They became really important to me. The fact that\nthe Lord always opened the doors for me seemed to escape my spiritual\nawareness. Not having the academic recognition and the \u201cpiece of paper\u201d always\nate at me.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The fact was, it was the Fear of Man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In 1971, when I was \u201cordained\u201d at Full Gospel Assembly in Salt\nLake City, I had my first \u201cpiece of paper.\u201d Man! That was gold! Ironically,\nwhen the ordination was taking place, among other things, Bill Christopulos<\/span> \u2013 the big Greek senior pastor \u2013 said, \u201cWe\ncan\u2019t ordain you. The Lord has already done that. All we can do is to say that\nwe recognize His anointing and His ordination.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It took a long time for those words to sink into me. Years, in\nfact! Brother Bill was saying, \u201cThis piece of paper isn\u2019t really worth anything\nas far as the real facts go. This is just our way of saying, \u2018we know what the\nreal facts are.\u2019\u201d I put a great deal of importance on the piece of paper for\nmany years before I realized how shallow it was. Man\u2019s recognition was worth\nsquat! It was God\u2019s recognition that really counted!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, I got cheated out of understanding that recognition\nfor many years by the Fear of Man.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I still have my ordination paper. But it isn\u2019t hanging on the wall\nof my office. It\u2019s in a folder somewhere \u2013 where it deserves to be. My gifts,\nmy callings, my skills and talents all come from the Lord. It is He that opens\nthe doors for me. It is He that creates opportunities. It is He that flows\nthrough me. Anything that gets accomplished accrues to His credit \u2013 not mine.\nIf I get credit for anything out of all of this, it is simply for being obedient\nto His Word and His Will.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If folks get impressed by what they see and hear, fine. But they\nneed to recognize that it is the Lord doing His Will, His Word and His Work\nthrough me. Then they can be impressed by the Lord and give Him the true glory\nand praise for what He has done. <\/span><\/p>\n


\n Sure took me a long time to learn that, though.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Over the years, I\u2019ve had my share of experiences where I realized\nthere were absolute barriers I could not cross \u2013 even though my ego would\ncertainly have benefited had I done so. Go figure. At the same time, there were\ntimes when I was able to recognize the need to refuse The Fear of Man's\ndemands.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In the summer of 1959, returning from Waxahachie, Texas where I\nhad attended Southwestern Bible Institute, I stopped off in Portland where my\nmother was waiting to attend a summer camp meeting in Brooks, Oregon. The\nspeaker for the week was J. Robert Ashcroft, John Ashcroft\u2019s (our former U.S.\nAttorney General) father. As it happened, John Ashcroft \u2013 who was something\nlike 17 years of age at the time \u2013 was at the same camp meeting. He and I\njoined our musical talents together to provide an atmosphere of praise and\nworship music. I played guitar, and John played bass. An Indian fellow from\nAberdeen, Washington joined us with a second guitar, and we had a threesome for\nthe week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Being musicians, our talk occasionally turned to the kinds of\ninstruments we were interested in. On my way back to Alaska from Southwestern,\nof course, I didn\u2019t have my own guitar with me. The guitar I was playing was a Gretsch<\/span> exactly like Chet Atkins often used, and I was\nhaving a blast. The instrument was on loan to me from a young fellow who\nnormally played it for the camp meeting services. His dad worked at the L.D.\nHeater Music Company in Portland and he suggested I should go there after the\ncamp meeting to look at a bunch of new guitars that had just come in.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

You need to understand where I was musically at the time. It was\nin 1948, as I recall, that I heard Chet Atkins play his first appearance on the\nGrand Ole Opry<\/span>. Don\u2019t forget. I was already playing\nthe piano then \u2013 at age six \u2013 because my folks wanted me to be a pianist. Piano\nlessons were not my favorite thing in life at that age. Hearing Chet Atkins do\nthe stuff he was doing on the guitar absolutely sold me. I made up my mind if\nhe could do all that, so could I, and I eventually talked my dad into letting\nme take up the guitar \u2013 so long, of course, as my piano lessons continued.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I had poured myself into learning the guitar. It was hilarious.\nI\u2019d wake up in the morning and go into the church so I wouldn\u2019t wake up the\nfamily and practice until it was time to go to school. Lots of times when I got\nhome at night, my Parki<\/span> never came off before I\ngrabbed the guitar and started practicing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

By 1959, I had become a reasonably credible musician and honed\nthose God-given talents to a fare-thee-well \u2013 never mind the fact that I was\nonly seventeen years of age. Following the Brooks Camp Meeting, I talked my\nmother into taking me to the L.D. Heater Music Company in Portland so I could\n\u201ctry out\u201d some guitars.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

One guitar really grabbed my attention so I picked it up, plugged\nit in, sat down and started playing. Like lots of musicians I know, I closed my\neyes and was gone \u2013 oblivious to my surroundings, just lost in the music. (In\nthose days, I hadn't yet come to recognize that my "getting lost" was\njust part of the spontaneous praise and worship that had become so much a part\nof me.) After some period, I opened my eyes and was surprised to find a\ngentleman standing there. He had been walking down the street, heard me\nplaying, and come into the store to listen.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

He nodded his approval when I caught his eye, and I kept on\nplaying. After some 30 minutes or so \u2013 it was hard to believe he was still\nthere \u2013 he introduced himself. (Sorry, I\u2019ve forgotten his name.) He told me\nthat he owned some clubs in Los Angeles, Los Vegas and Reno. \u201cCome and play for\nme,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll sign you to a contract for as long as you want. We\u2019ll start\nyou at $400 a night.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Nahhh<\/span><\/span>!\nCouldn\u2019t be. It was a joke. 400 bucks a night? At seventeen years of age? I\nshook my head and turned back to the guitar.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This guy was persistent, though. \u201cI\u2019m serious, son! You\u2019re\nunbelievably good on the guitar. You sound just like Chet Atkins. Come and play\nfor me and I\u2019ll hook you up with him. You guys can play together.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Ouch! He sure knew how to hurt a guy! It still wasn\u2019t real to me,\nthough. I felt like this was all some kind of fantasy so I said to him, \u201cNo. I\ncan\u2019t do that. Besides, the only music I play is gospel music. I don\u2019t play any\npopular music.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He wasn\u2019t about to let go. \u201cHey, I don\u2019t care what kind of music\nyou play. Play anything you like. Play your religious music. Just come and play\nfor me.\u201d Now he upped the ante. \u201cTell you what. You sign a contract with me and\nI\u2019ll see that your folks get a new home. We\u2019ll get you any kind of car you want\nto drive. Your family will be taken care of in style.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This guy\u2019s insistence was really beginning to get through to me.\nMaybe he was for real. No matter. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. The gifts and abilities I have\ncome from the Lord. I promised Him a long time ago that I would use them to\nhonor Him.\u201d Now his frustration was beginning to show. Exasperated, he said,\n\u201cLook! You name the ticket. Whatever you want, we\u2019ll get you. Just come and\nsign a contract with me.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

All of a sudden, it was like I was seeing Jesus on top of the\nmountain being offered the kingdoms of this world by the devil. There wasn\u2019t\nany way I could accept the offer. This guy might as well have been the devil\nfor all I knew. He was trying to pull the same thing on me Jesus went through.\nHe was offering power, prestige, material wealth \u2013 everything that folks need\nwhen they have to impress others.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

\u201cSir, I really appreciate your offer. You need to understand that\neverything I have belongs to the Lord. I belong to Him. No matter what kind of\noffer you want to<\/span> present, I just don\u2019t see how my playing in one of your clubs\n so you can sell booze will be glorifying to the Lord.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/o:p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The words just came out. They weren\u2019t planned. He scratched his\n head, muttered something unintelligible, turned and walked out the door,\n shaking his head in unbelief.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It was my first major victory over the Fear of Man. I just didn\u2019t\nrealize it at the time. There were lots of occasions in the years to come when\nthe Enemy would remind me of my decision and point at my less-than-prosperous\ncondition at the time and say, \u201cSee. Look what you missed out on!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Fast forward to 1982. Having moved the CBN ministry to Fairbanks\nfrom Barrow had produced unexpected results. A new fellowship sprang up around\nthe CBN operation. Many of the folks who had become counselors and people who\nresponded to telephone calls from people in need wanted a separate fellowship.\nThe churches they were a part of weren\u2019t meeting their needs and they saw the\npotential for something new.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I wasn\u2019t interested in competing with the local churches, so I set\nour meeting time for Sunday afternoon instead of the morning. I had rented a\nten-bedroom home from another ministry to use as our interim headquarters. It\nhad a pretty decent-sized living room, and folks began to congregate there on\nSunday afternoons. In no time at all \u2013 a few weeks, if that \u2013 we had an average\nof 40 to 70 people gathering on Sunday afternoons.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Without the income from Arctic Slope Audio or North Slope\nCommunications to fund us, I asked CBN in Virginia Beach for funds to help us\nget into a new operating center. It was the first time in nearly six years I\u2019d\never asked them for anything. They responded, and we contracted with a builder\nto remodel a warehouse and turn it into offices and broadcast studios.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Before the place was even finished, we started moving our Sunday\nfellowship meetings into the main studio so we would have enough room for our\ngatherings. The growth of CBN\u2019s operation and the sudden departure of a lot of\nfolks from some of the local churches to participate or become part of our\nlocal House of Praise fellowship became an instant threat to some pastors.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It didn\u2019t take too long for a letter-writing campaign to get under\nway from local church leaders as they launched attacks on me. One of the\naccusations was that our local ministry wasn\u2019t answerable to anyone. It was a\nspurious charge, of course. We were<\/b> answerable to CBN.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

At an Area Directors\u2019 conference in Virginia Beach, I asked some\nof the other directors how they would deal with the commotion. \u201cDo you have a\nboard of directors with your local ministry?\u201d they asked. \u201cAre you showing\nyourself as responsible and cooperative with the local ministerial community?\u201d\nI didn\u2019t want to appear as irresponsible and \u201cout of submission\u201d \u2013 never mind\nthe fact that I had always felt that boards of directors were unscriptural. In\norder to please my detractors, therefore, I picked a group of people to serve\nas CBN-Alaska\u2019s board.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Are you getting the picture? \u201cIn order to please my\ndetractors\u2026\u2026.?\u201d Right!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Sitting in a board meeting one November Friday night with our\nnewly formed board, I suddenly had a chill down my spine and the very real sense\nthat I had just slammed the door on an otherwise-prospering ministry by trying\nto appear like everyone else. Listening to some of the new board members argue\nover their respective titles and positions was both disgusting and\ndisheartening.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Funny part of it was, though, I was in the middle of teaching on\nthe Fear of Man. The following Sunday, in the midst of teaching, I suddenly\nrealized that I had succumbed once again to that spirit of fear in order to\n\u201cplease the people.\u201d My prayer might surely have been different that day, had I\nrealized the consequences of saying to the Lord, \u201ctear it down, Lord! Tear it\ndown! Don\u2019t let this ministry simply become another clone or copy of all the\nother ministries that go through the motions and fail to become your voice and\nauthority in the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Whewww<\/span><\/span>!!!\nBetter know what you\u2019re praying and what\u2019s going to happen when you mean it!\nJust six months later, CBN-Alaska closed its doors. The letter-writing campaign\nagainst us didn\u2019t cease with the changes: they only increased. By March of\n1983, things were unbelievably intense. I flew to Virginia Beach and offered to\nresign in order to defuse the opposition. No deal! They didn\u2019t want my\nresignation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless, a corporate decision was made just weeks later to\ndisband all affiliates around the country such as ours and re-centralize all\nCBN\u2019s operations in Virginia Beach. Did the attacks on CBN-Alaska play a part?\nPerhaps. Other centers were getting some of the same opposition, though.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The decision to shut down came just as we were in the midst of\ndedicating CBN-Alaska\u2019s new headquarters. From a personal standpoint, the\ntiming couldn\u2019t have been worse. From God\u2019s standpoint, however, it was His\nmercy. He had clearly and unequivocally answered my prayer.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I have never established a board of directors for any ministry\nsince, and have encouraged others to follow suit. There\u2019s a big difference\nbetween having an advisory council and having a board of directors who can\nlegislate decisions God has not directed the local shepherd or primary leader\nto follow. Titles are meaningless with God. They don\u2019t impress Him one bit. The\nFear of Man promotes decision-making that simply de-thrones God\u2019s authority. It\npromotes titles, offices and positions that only puff up one\u2019s ego. I\u2019ve never\nregretted my prayer in spite of the consequences that followed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
