ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: EXERCISING SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

August 22, 2014<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I'd really intended to get back to our series on Dealing With\nFear today, but just felt to continue the break a bit longer. During the past\nthree weeks we've talked about the Eskdale<\/span> Miracle.\nConsider today's sharing somewhat of an extension.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What I\u2019m about to share with you has been shared before in bits\nand pieces in previous Coffee Breaks, and if you've seen or heard this before,\npardon me for the repetition.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During\nmy years at Long Beach Christian Center with Dwain McKenzie, I found a house\nfor the family on Harding Street in North Long Beach, perhaps a mile and a half\nor two miles from the church. It was in this house that the Lord stirred me to\nbegin fasting at least once each year for forty days.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Following\none of those early fasts, I just felt in my spirit to begin walking the\nneighborhood each morning. In Deuteronomy 11:24, we read of Moses\u2019 prophesying\nin part to Israel prior to their entrance into the Land of Promise, <\/span>\u201cEvery place whereon<\/span> the soles of your\nfeet shall tread shall be yours.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\nscripture went through me like a shot! The emphasis of the Holy Spirit was that\nI should \u201cpossess\u201d the territory where I lived \u2013 not by buying up all of the\nhouses and property, but by exercising the authority of the Lord in a tangible\nway.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As\nmy walks began, I started one block at a time. Each morning, I would walk the\ncomplete circumference of the block, praying over each home on that block,\noccasionally stretching out my hand toward a home as I was directed by the Lord\nand speaking something like this, \u201cFather, in the name of Jesus Christ, I\nestablish your Kingdom authority in this home. Raise up righteousness here.\nBring salvation, healing and deliverance. I claim this home and this family for\nthe Kingdom of God.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Over\na period of weeks and many months, the practice continued. I began to enlarge\nthe territory. For awhile it was simply one block. Then it was two. Then it\nincreased to three, then four, then five, then six, and so forth, until I was\ncovering a pretty large territory.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\npractice was always the same. As I walked, I would pray in tongues. Sometimes I\nwould pray with my understanding, saying, \u201cFather, I agree with your Word, and\nI take this territory for your Kingdom. Everywhere the soles of my feet tread,\nI take this territory and possess it for your Kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nfrequently extended my hand towards homes, towards the public schools, toward\nbusinesses, praying over the occupants, the school children, the school\nadministration, the businesses and their owners. There wasn\u2019t any visible\neffect from my prayers for perhaps as much as two years. One by one, I began to\nhear of or meet families in the homes I was praying over. Very few of them\nactually came to our church, but I began to find that many of these families\nwere coming to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Frequently,\nas I met the families, they would tell me where they had begun to attend a\nchurch or become involved in some fellowship. In some cases, I actually met\ntheir pastors. People began to be saved, healed of various diseases and\nafflictions, and set free from evil spirits \u2013 all as a direct result of simply\nconsistently walking the territory, praying over them and extending the\nauthority of the Lord Jesus Christ as I walked and prayed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One\nday, about a block south of our home, I happened to see the Long Beach police\nconduct a raid on one of the houses I had prayed over. It was a house I had\nreally felt strange about, but was new enough to this kind of prayer and\nintercession not to recognize what I was sensing. It was a house I consistently\nproclaimed the authority of the Kingdom of God over.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turns\nout the house was being used for the manufacture and distribution of drugs \u2013\nheroin and cocaine. The police shut it down and put the drug dealers out of\nbusiness \u2013 at least in my neighborhood. I knew it was a direct result of the\nprayers and the consistent walking of the area.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A\nfew months later, a house on the opposite side of the street and down a half\nblock from our home was raided by the police and shut down. Because of the red\nlight above the front door that used to come on every evening, I suspected that\nit was a whore house. It was. Again, Holy Spirit made clear to me the fact that\nit was because of the exercise of spiritual authority taking place.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nbecame emboldened. I called up Dick Parrish, who also served on the pastoral\nstaff of Long Beach Christian Center, and asked him to join me in some of these\nwalks. Then Dwain McKenzie (who had been my lifetime friend, brother in the\nLord, and was the senior pastor at LBCC) began to join in the walks. We began\nto walk the territory near the church.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

About\ntwo blocks from the church was a home where some bikers lived. Every time we\nwalked past the place, I stretched out my hand toward the home and proclaimed\nthe establishment of the Kingdom of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nearly\ntwenty years passed after we had walked that territory when the Lord\norchestrated an opportunity for Della and I to meet the bikers who had occupied\nthat home Dwain, Dick and I had walked past and prayed over. Della and I were\nin Atlin<\/span>, British Columbia sharing and ministering\nwith friends from Anchorage.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\nwere invited to come over for dinner to the home of an artist and sculptor who\nlived in Atlin<\/span> with his wife and teenage daughter.\nSitting around the dinner table that night, we happened to mention Long Beach.\nThe artist perked up his ears, as did his wife.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\nwere in Long Beach, California?\u201d he asked. \u201cWhen was that?\u201d I responded that I\nhad been there for about five years in the early and mid-1970\u2019s.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWow,\nwhat a coincidence,\u201d he exclaimed. \u201cSo did we!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nasked him what part of Long Beach he had lived in, and he described the street\nwhere Dwain, Dick and I had walked. Now it was my turn to be amazed. He and his\nwife went on to tell us that they had been a part of the biker crowd, living a\npretty wild, hippie kind of life.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nstarted to laugh. \u201cWe never met during those days,\u201d I said, \u201cbut you were\nsurely some of the people we prayed for as we walked the neighborhood.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He\nalmost came out of his chair. \u201cYou! You! I used to watch you stop in front of our\nhouse and stretch out your hand toward us. Never could hear what you were\nsaying, but we figured you must have been praying or something like that.\nThat\u2019s when my wife and I experienced the Lord Jesus Christ coming into our\nlives and convicting us. That\u2019s when we came to know the Lord for the first\ntime in our lives!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\ncontinued to walk the neighborhood where I lived, gradually increasing the size\nof the territory where I walked until I was walking portions of Atlantic and\nLong Beach Blvds<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One\nday as I was walking Long Beach Blvd., I was shocked to see an X-rated porn\ntheater that had just opened up. Something rose up inside of me in anger that\nSatan would attempt to so brazenly encroach on territory I had been claiming\nfor the Lord. I walked right up to the front of the theater, put my hands on\nthe building and began to proclaim the establishing of the Kingdom of God in\nthe place.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Despite\nthe fact that folks were standing out front of the place and staring at me like\nI\u2019d lost my marbles or something, I began to speak out loud, \u201cFather, in the\nname of Jesus, I establish your Kingdom authority in this place. I shut this\ntheater down!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\nwas several weeks later that I was driving down Long Beach Blvd. and decided to\ncheck on the porn theater. Not too surprisingly, it was shut down. All of the\nbillboards and placards were gone and the theater marquee was empty. I thought\nto myself, Wow, this is too good to pass up.<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nparked my car and walked over to the front of the building, and again I placed\nmy hand on the outside of the place and began to proclaim the Word of God. I\nsaid, \u201cFather, in the name of Jesus Christ, I again establish your Kingdom in\nthis place, and I raise up righteousness. Let this building become something\nthat will serve your purposes and be to your Glory.\u201d Then I got back in my car\nand drove away.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Again\nit was some weeks that passed before I thought of the theater and decided to go\nand check on it. As I drove towards the building, I saw a man standing on a\nladder putting letters on the theater marquee. I pulled over and parked and\nwatched him spell out the following, one letter at a time: E \u2013 V \u2013 A \u2013 N \u2013 G \u2013\nE \u2013 L T \u2013 E \u2013 M \u2013 P \u2013 L \u2013 E.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Brother,\ndid I ever let out a war whoop! It had worked! What was once an X-rated porn\ntheater was shut down, and a church and worship center opened up in its place.\nI\u2019ve no idea how long that church functioned in that building, but years later\nwhen I came back to Long Beach for a visit, it was still operating.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Naturally,\nI wasted no time in sharing it with the folks at Long Beach Christian Center.\nDave Dobbs, who was also part of our staff, happened to be driving with his\nwife in the San Fernando Valley some months later. They came across a huge\nconstruction site where a large number of construction workers and a lot of\nequipment were busy building some very elegant appearing structure.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dave\ndrove around the place out of curiosity to see what was being built. A large\nsign with an artist\u2019s rendition displayed a future Buddhist temple. Dave\nremembered my experience and sharing about the theater and thought, This\nis a principle we need to apply here.<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He\nand his wife parked their car, got out and walked to the chain link fence that\nsurrounded the property. They stretched their hands towards the partially\nconstructed building and proclaimed, \u201cFather, in Jesus\u2019 name, we establish your\nKingdom over this place, and we shut down this project now!\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\nmust have been two or three months that passed before they happened to be back\nin the Valley and thought about the incident. They drove back to the\nconstruction site of that building, and \u2013 to their astonishment \u2013 saw weeds\ngrown up around the place. Construction had ceased almost from the day they had\nspoken the word of authority.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Seems\nlike it was almost a year later that Dave was back in the Valley and thought\nabout checking on the place one more time. The Buddhist trappings of the place\nwere gone, and it had been redesigned into a nice office building.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

By\nnow, you are beginning to understand what I mean when I talk about Spiritual\nAuthority. That is the authority of Holy Spirit working in folks who are\nsubmitted to the Lord and sensitive to His voice and leading. We don't get to\ndo these things just because it seems like a good idea. We do them at the\nprompting of Holy Spirit. He plants a rhema<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span> in our being and a holy\nboldness to go with it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s\nthe kind of authority that brings healing. That\u2019s the kind of authority that\nbrings deliverance to people in captivity to Satan. That\u2019s the kind of\nauthority that tears down the thrones of spiritual rulers \u2013 the apostle Paul\nrefers to them in the Greek text of Ephesians 6 as kosmokrator<\/span>:\nworld rulers of darkness \u2013 demon princes who exercise power and influence to\nexecute wickedness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What\nis so fabulous is that Joe everyday Christian has access to that authority, if\nhe can simply grasp it. Folks get cheated out of living and walking in this\nrealm because of false teaching, because of screwball doctrines, and mostly\nbecause of fear, doubt and unbelief. If Christians would begin to exercise this\nkind of authority right in the neighborhoods where they live, we would have a\nradically different world today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\nshared a fair portion of the above with a group of young folks at a fellowship\nin Barnwell, Alberta when Della and I were there three or four years ago. The\npastor and his wife had a young son, two-year-old Timmy, who had club feet and\nhad never walked. Hearing the story of the healing of the child in Eskdale<\/span> spurred their faith and they asked if we could pray\nfor young Timmy. The Lord had already told Della that He was going to repeat\nthat event that day, so their request was not unexpected.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\nsaw Holy Spirit repeat the miracle as little Timmy walked across the platform\nin front of everyone for the first time in his life. There wasn't a dry eye in\nthe place!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Shortly\nafterward, four young men in the group suddenly got up from their seats and\nrushed out the back door. Remember the Eskdale<\/span>\nexperience I\u2019ve talked about? Barnwell is nearly 100% Mormon, and like Eskdale<\/span> has a population of about 350 people. Right next to\nthe building where this fellowship was meeting was the local Mormon ward.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These\nfour young men went over to the ward hall and stood on the sides of the\nbuilding. They placed their hands on the building and began to pray, \u201cFather,\nin Jesus\u2019 name, establish your Kingdom and raise up righteousness in this\nplace.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No\nsooner had they gotten back to the service that was underway when four young\nwomen decided to follow suit. They were frustrated that the guys hadn\u2019t let\nthem know what they were doing, and they were determined to play their part in\nwhatever the Lord was going to do. Naturally, they headed over to the ward, and\neach one of the four stood at one of the four corners of the building. They\nessentially duplicated what the four young men had prayed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

While\nthey were praying over the place, the Mormon bishop came out and saw them. He\nwalked over and said, \u201cWhat\u2019s happening here? Can I help you?\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\ngirls sheepishly said, \u201cWe\u2019re, uhhh<\/span>\u2026.we\u2019re just\npraising the Lord and declaring His righteousness.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nbishop kind of scratched his head and said, \u201cUhh<\/span>, OK.\nI guess that\u2019s a good thing to do on the Sabbath.\u201d He got in his vehicle and\ndrove around to see the other girls standing at the corners. When they saw him,\nthey beat a hasty path back to the fellowship hall.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\nwas both amusing and an enormous blessing to see young people respond so\ninstantly. What comes from it remains to be seen, but one thing is sure. When\nfolks respond to the quickening of the Lord, seeking to broaden the scope of\nGod\u2019s rulership<\/span> in a practical dimension, He always\ncomes through with signs following.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Keith\nMoore made a statement in one of the Southwest Believer's Conventions we went\nto that I've never forgotten, and it applies to what I've just shared. Eskdale<\/span>, Long Beach, Barnwell\u2026..they\u2019re all examples of\nwhat happens when you apply this principle.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When you want what God wants for the same reason that God\nwants it, you become unlimited and unstoppable!<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And\nthat\u2019s the absolute truth! That\u2019s SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY!<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
