 <\/p>\n

Today's Coffee Break is a departure from our new series on\nDealing with Fear. Because we celebrate Independence Day as a nation, I just\nfelt to make some comments and observations and requests to all of you on this\n4th of July. We will return to our series on fear next week.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today's photo is a bit unusual, I know. Most folks have normal\ngrandchildren -- don't they? Some folks, like the Capeners<\/span>,\nhave kids, grandkids, and even great-grandkids who just like to break the mold!\n(Something tells me that we did too!) Today's picture was on the front page of\nthe Anchorage Daily News. This is our grandson, Joseph Picasso, who was yelling\n"USA" chants at the USA-Belgium World Cup soccer match.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Joseph, and his brother, Anthony, are both nationally-recognized\nsoccer players, and they are sports fans of every stripe (pun intended)!\nBecause many of the attendees at the soccer match had painted their faces with\nUSA flag colors, Joseph did one better and painted the upper half of his body\nand then draped the flag, Superman style. Some young folks are trailblazers and\nstand out from the crowd. (grin) Joseph is highly patriotic and wanted everyone\nto know he was supporting America's team. We are rightfully proud of our\ngrandson(s). Too bad we didn't get to participate in or attend Joseph and\nAnthony's soccer matches. We were thousands of miles apart during these matches\nand during this time of their lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

During\nthe past few days I've been remembering some of Benjamin Franklin's writings,\nhis speeches, and the importance he placed on our nation's foundations as being\nrooted in our relationship with God. Perhaps his most famous oration occurred\nwhen he was addressing the Federal Convention in 1787 as the delegates were\nstruggling to come up with a Constitution for the new nation:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"Mr. President:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The small progress we\nhave made after 4 or five weeks close attendance & continual reasonings<\/span> with each other\u2014our different sentiments on\nalmost every question, several of the last producing as many noes<\/span> and ays<\/span>, is methinks a\nmelancholy proof of the imperfection of the Human Understanding. We indeed seem\nto feel our own want of political wisdom, some we have been running about in\nsearch of it. We have gone back to ancient history for models of Government,\nand examined the different forms of those Republics which having been formed\nwith the seeds of their own dissolution now no longer exist. And we have viewed\nModern States all round Europe, but find none of their Constitutions suitable\nto our circumstances.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In this situation of\nthis Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and\nscarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir,\nthat we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of\nlights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with\nGreat Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room\nfor the divine protection.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Our prayers, Sir, were\nheard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the\nstruggle must have observed frequent instances of a Superintending providence\nin our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of\nconsulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity.\nAnd have we now forgotten that powerful friend?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I have lived, Sir, a\nlong time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this\ntruth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to\nthe ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without\nhis aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that<\/span> <\/span>"except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that\nbuild it."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I firmly believe this;\nand I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this\npolitical building no better, than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided\nby our partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we\nourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is\nworse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of\nestablishing governments by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war and\nconquest.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I therefore beg leave\nto move that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its\nblessings on our deliberations be held in this Assembly every morning before we\nproceed to business, and that one or more of the clergy of this city be\nrequested to officiate in that service."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Franklin,\nas well as all of the Framers of the Constitution, realized the value of\nreligion in society. And they realized the value of prayer in the weightier\nmatters of politics. As it turns out, Dr. Franklin was not senile at all as\nsome have suggested in more modern times; he was simply asking for divine\nassistance in what proved to be the formation of our American system. Perhaps\nthere were no "official" prayers during the Convention, but denying\nthat the delegates wanted God's blessing and direction\u2014now that would be\nsenility.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Was\nthat simply a political expression, or an attempt to curry favor with his\noutspoken Christian compatriots? Was it a "deistic" expression? I\nhardly think so. You hear the ring of conviction in Benjamin Franklin's plea;\nand it is a notable shift from those things we read from Franklin's writings in\nhis earlier years. My personal sense is that as he sat there in that Federal\nConvention, the words he had heard the fiery Evangelist, George Whitefield,\npreach years before rang in his ears. There was indeed a realization on his\npart that except the Lord order the establishment of America as a nation, this\ncountry would soon fold under the weight of the anarchy of Godlessness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It\nwas on November 4, 1800, that Charles Carroll of Carrollton -- the one Roman\nCatholic who signed our Declaration of Independence -- wrote to another of the\nfounding fathers, James McHenry, and said in part,<\/span> <\/span>"Without morals a\nrepublic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the\nChristian religion, whose morality is so sublime & pure, [and] which\ndenounces against the wicked eternal misery, and [which] insured to the good\neternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best\nsecurity for the duration of free governments."<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

He\nmight just as well have been writing to today's ACLU -- an organization which\nhas gone out of its way to "decry the Christian religion" and\n"undermine the solid foundations of morals, the best security for the\nduration of free governments" under the premise that government has no\nright to enact morals and Biblical standards for behavior.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

There's\na quote I find eminently appropriate for our 4th of July celebrations. It comes\nfrom<\/span> Leviticus 25:10, and appears as a\nquotation on the nation's Liberty Bell: "Proclaim\nLiberty throughout all the land to the inhabitants thereof."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nlooking for the name of the individual(s) who commissioned the making of this\nbell, I was trying to find out who called for the inscribing of the Scripture\nverse. It appears that our history has omitted the name of the person who\nactually proposed this, but the order for the casting of the original bell with\nscripture verse intact came from an order of the Assembly of the Province of\nPennsylvania for the State House in Philadelphia (also known as Independence\nHall) in 1751. Although we have no concrete evidence to back it up, it would\nappear that the commissioning of the bell was to commemorate William Penn's\nCharter of Privileges written 50 years before.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

To\nput the quote from Leviticus in context, here is the first paragraph of William\nPenn's preamble to that Charter of Privileges:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"BECAUSE no\nPeople can be truly happy, though under the greatest Enjoyment of Civil\nLiberties, if abridged of the Freedom of their Consciences, as to their\nReligious Profession and Worship: And Almighty God being the only Lord of\nConscience, Father of Lights and Spirits; and the Author as well as Object of\nall divine Knowledge, Faith and Worship, who only doth enlighten the Minds, and\npersuade and convince the Understandings of People, I do hereby grant and\ndeclare, That no Person or Persons, inhabiting In this Province or Territories,\nwho shall confess and acknowledge One almighty God, the Creator, Upholder and\nRuler of the World; and professes him or themselves obliged to live quietly\nunder the Civil Government, shall be in any Case molested or prejudiced, in his\nor their Person or Estate, because of his or their conscientious Persuasion or\nPractice, nor be compelled to frequent or maintain any religious Worship, Place\nor Ministry, contrary to his or their Mind, or to do or suffer any other Act or\nThing, contrary to their religious Persuasion."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nWhitechapel<\/span> Bell Foundry in London cast the very\nfirst Liberty Bell, but its metal composition was so brittle that the very\nfirst time the bell struck, it cracked. John Pass and John Stow, who were local\nPhiladelphia founders, offered to melt and recast the bell and strengthen its\ncomposition. The new bell was completed and hung in March, 1753. The first time\nit rang, however, the city fathers didn't like its tone, so Pass and Stow\nrecast it a third time. They completed the work in short order, and in June,\n1753, the bell was re-hung. Although some of the city fathers still didn't like\nthe tone of the new bell, the majority of citizens agreed that it was a good\nsounding bell, and this time the bell stayed.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

That\nbell cracked almost a hundred years later, although the date of its initial\ncrack is in question. That crack, however grew in proportion on February 22,\n1789 in honor of George Washington's Presidency when it tolled for several\nhours. An attempt to repair the crack some 57 years later resulted in only\nextending the flaw, and the bell has not been rung publicly since. The bell was\nrecast and a replacement donated by Henry Seybert<\/span> in\n1876 at the Centennial Anniversary Celebration.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nname, "Liberty Bell," however, was not the name the bell was known by\nuntil 1835. In fact, the bell had no name per se until R. G. Williams published\nVolume 1, No. 2 of The Anti-Slavery Record in February of 1835. His comment is\nworth reprinting here:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

"The Liberty\nBell. Being in Philadelphia a few days since, I was invited after viewing the\nroom in which the Declaration of Independence was signed, to ascend the tower\nof the State House, to take a view of the city. The view was delightful. On our\nascent, we did not fail to examine the celebrated Bell. It weighs 2300 pounds,\nand was cast 23 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. On\nthat occasion it was rung, and has been run every 22d February and 4th of July\nsince. It is remarkable that the following inscription was on the bell when it\nwas cast. It was considered a sort of prophecy: "PROCLAIM LIBERTY\nTHROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND, AND TO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF." May not the\nemancipationists in Philadelphia, hope to live to hear the same bell rung, when\nliberty shall in fact be proclaimed to all the inhabitants of this favored\nland? Hitherto, the bell has not obeyed the inscription; and its peals have\nbeen a mockery, while one sixth of "all inhabitants" are in abject\nslavery."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nfact, Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation almost 29 years later\nfulfilled the prophecy, and the Liberty Bell became a prophetic symbol of the\nfreedoms we enjoy in Christ as Americans. It commemorated to a certain degree\nthe words of those Mayflower settlers whose compact and covenant began, <\/span>"In the name of God\u2026Having undertaken for the glory of\nGod and advancement of the Christian faith\u2026 "announcing the fact that this\nnation's very beginnings were undertaken "for the Glory of God, and\nadvancement of the Christian faith."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nsigns and symbols, the Scripture references that abound in our founding\nfathers' commentaries, and their labors of love and covenant to establish this\ngreat nation make abundantly clear that they purposed to have <\/span>"one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and\njustice for all."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

America\nhas, because of its degeneration and promiscuity, fallen into the hands of the\nlawless who think nothing of ignoring our foundations, the Constitution which\nwas written to provide checks and balances against the tyranny of a few, and\nthe blood of our founding fathers who bled and died in order to see that this\nnation was founded in and with a covenant relationship with God through the\nLord Jesus Christ. Never has there been a greater crisis for this nation's\nexistence in its 238 year history than we face today.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This\nis why I call upon every believer to join in daily prayer and intercession for\nthe removal of the wicked and the raising up of righteousness at every level of\ngovernance and influence across this nation: from the White House (and its\nvarious cabinets) to the Senate, to the House of Representatives, to governors\nand state legislatures, to city and county governments.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

We\nhave been a free and independent nation, but our independence has caused us to\nstray from our dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ for His governance in this\nland. It's time to reverse thing, folks!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
