Good\nMorning! I need to take a break from the series dealing with tribulation and\nwrath for a couple of weeks to talk about the current state of our nation --\nspiritually, politically and economically -- and talk about the crisis we all\nface. I'll get back to our other series before too long.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nportion of what I'm about to share has been shared before in several different\nCoffee Breaksover<\/span> the past eight years but we all\nneed the reminding and refreshing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nisn\u2019t a one of us that would disagree with the premise that our entire body of\nlaw, and our nation, are built upon the foundation of the Constitution of the<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

United\nStates<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

.\n\u201cWe the people of the United States, in order\nto form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide\nfor the common defence<\/span>, promote the general welfare,\nand secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain\nand establish this Constitution for the United States of America.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nreads the Preamble to the Constitution. From there we launch into the specifics\nof that foundation to the laws our founding fathers saw fit to incorporate as\nthe starting place from which to build a cohesive nation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nI ran for Congress back in 2004, I made certain that folks understood I was\nrunning as a Constitutional conservative. What I meant by that stance was that\nI believe in not just limited government, but small government \u2013 government\nthat does not intrude upon the fundamental rights of its citizens, government\nthat isn\u2019t in the handout business, but provides a hand to help its citizens\nmake a life for themselves and using some initiative to prosper according to\ntheir individual skills and gifts.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although\nI'm still registered as a Republican it seems to me that many of the party\nleaders have abandoned the fundamentals upon which the party was founded,\nbecoming pretty self-serving in the process. I'm not a Libertarian simply\nbecause the Libertarian platform goes too far in ignoring the spiritual\nfoundations of our nation and treats those foundations as an intrusion into our\nConstitutional liberties. I'm not a Democrat because the Democratic party has\nlong since left middle America and become the party of deviants, aberrants<\/span> and promoters of everything abhorrent to me --\nfirst as a Christian, and secondly as one who espouses the core of how this\nnation was founded and established.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\npurpose of my discussion today, however, is not to rehash a political campaign,\nnor is it to get into the basics of the Constitution of the<\/span> <\/span>United\nStates, nor is it to debate our laws. I believe that our Constitution was\nfounded upon a Law that undergirds our entire society, and indeed, separates\nthe<\/span> <\/span>United States<\/span> <\/span>from\nevery other nation in the world.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\nin case you are thinking I\u2019m going to say The Ten Commandments, you\u2019re wrong.\nThe Ten Commandments certainly formed a fundamental core of the way in which\nour laws were written, but what I\u2019m talking about goes way beyond that.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme begin with a portion of the Mayflower Compact \u2013 an agreement entered into by\nthe folks who fled<\/span> <\/span>England<\/span>\n<\/span>in\norder to provide a way of life and a freedom they could not obtain there. (As\nan aside, Della can trace her family\u2019s beginnings in this country to one of\nthose original families aboard the Mayflower.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN<\/span><\/b>. We,\nwhose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord\nKing James<\/i>, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain<\/i>, France<\/i>,\nand Ireland<\/i>, King, Defender of the Faith<\/i>, &c. Having\nundertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith,<\/u>\n(my emphasis) and the Honour<\/span> of our King and Country,\na Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia<\/i>; Do\nby these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one\nanother, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick<\/span>, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and\nFurtherance of the Ends aforesaid\u2026\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

While\nthese settlers certainly had a reverence for King James, and<\/span> <\/span>England<\/span> <\/span>as\na whole, they sought something missing in their native land: the freedom to\nworship God, and an opportunity to advance their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ\nwith all of the basic fundamentals that make Christianity what it is. They\nlooked to the establishing of a colony away from the King, away from<\/span> <\/span>England,\nand away from the Church of England with its rigidity in order that there might\nbe freedom to grow spiritually.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Looking\nat each of the individual charters of the thirteen original colonies, it\nbecomes clear that \u2013 without exception \u2013 the freedom to worship God and serve\nthe Lord Jesus Christ was their underlying motivation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nof the arguments that I\u2019ve engaged in with some folks during the past few\nmonths has been over the recurrence of the phrase, \u201cthe Christian religion,\u201d in\nthe body of many of our founding fathers\u2019 documents. The argument raised of\ncourse is predicated on Thomas Jefferson\u2019s statement to a Baptist preacher\nconcerning \u201ca wall of separation between church and state.\u201d What most folks\nmiss<\/b> \u2013 and what most leftists and liberals want to argue over \u2013 is that\nChristianity is not<\/b> a religion. It is not a dogma. It is not some kind\nof body of theological ideas.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Christianity\u2013\ntrue Christianity \u2013 as our founding fathers saw it, was a deep reverence for,\nand worship of, the Lord Jesus Christ. Folks could have differences of\nunderstanding over some things and be a part of different church groups or\norganizations, but the common denominator that bound our founding fathers\ntogether was the worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. They defined the differences\nthat separated them as \u201creligion,\u201d but not the faith.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou understanding what I\u2019m getting at? Some have supposed that there were deep\ndifferences that divided our forefathers, that the division was religious in\nnature, and that the colonies were established in order to ensure that the\nBaptists stayed to themselves, the Quakers stayed to themselves, the Anglicans\nstayed to themselves, etc., etc. Not true!<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nI have often commented to some of my friends \u2013 perhaps rhetorically \u2013 I am a\nvery strong-willed and outspoken person. (Of course, you\u2019d have never guessed, huhh<\/span>?) As a minister of the Gospel, and a preacher, I can be\nverrry<\/i><\/b><\/span> strong in some of the statements\nthat I make. Those remarks are not made in anger, nor am I trying to sell some\nnutty doctrine. I do have strong convictions \u2013 convictions that are often based\nin years of personal experience. That doesn\u2019t mean that I can\u2019t be wrong, or\nthat the Lord doesn\u2019t still have to beat me upside the head with a 2X4 once in\nawhile to get my attention. He does, and I change. (OK. No smart alec<\/span> remarks from the peanut gallery!)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Many\nof those early forefathers were preachers. William Penn, for example, was a\nQuaker. Just three weeks after his arrival (in 1682) in the colony that would\neventually bear his name, he called for an election of representatives to a\nprovincial assembly. Among Penn\u2019s first laws passed by this assembly were\nguarantees protecting the freedom of conscience. These laws permitted\nChristians who were considered heretics in the<\/span>\n<\/span>Old\nWorld<\/span> <\/span>to escape their persecutions for\nworshiping God \u201cdifferently\u201d than some of their brethren.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Roger\nWilliams was from the Antinomians \u2013 a sect that eventually became the first\ngroup of Baptists. A brilliant apologist for the Gospel of Jesus Christ,\nWilliams was influenced by the Reformation and Martin Luther\u2019s theses on faith.\nDetermined to ensure that the colonists had the freedom to worship God, he\nlabored long and hard to obtain a charter for the new colony of<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Rhode\nIsland<\/span> <\/span>and to establish laws and statutes that\nwould provide the colonists the right and freedom to worship the Lord as they\nsaw fit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Massachusetts<\/span> <\/span>(despite\nits present liberalism and the current attacks by some of its judges on the\ninstitution of marriage) had John Winthrop (its first governor) and John Eliot.<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Winthrop<\/span> <\/span>was\nso convinced that God had a sovereign purpose for this new land that while on\nboard the Arabella<\/span>, sailing for<\/span> <\/span>America,\nhe wrote \u201cA Model of Christian Charity,\u201d in which he outlined the purposes of\nGod for<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

New\nEngland. He had a vision and what he felt was a deep understanding of God\u2019s\npurposes for the new colony.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John\nEliot, an ordained Anglican, but \u201cnonconformist\u201d minister, settled into this\nnewly developing colony to translate the Bible into the Indian tongue of the\nlocal tribes, and evangelized the natives to such a degree that the\nMassachusetts Parliament established, incorporated, and provided the necessary\nfinancing to support \u201cThe Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in<\/span> <\/span>New\nEngland.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then,\nof course, you have the Moravians who settled<\/span>\n<\/span>North\nCarolina, and the Puritans who settled<\/span>\n<\/span>Connecticut.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\ndon\u2019t want this to turn into a history lesson, but it is important to see that\nthese original colonists all shared a common goal, and there was a common\nthread in their objectives: the absolute right to worship the Lord Jesus Christ\nas they saw fit without interference from government. To the contrary, as\ncolonial governments formed and charters were established, the common purpose\nin each charter was to guarantee that \u2013 even if the local governments provided\nthe funding to accomplish it \u2013 the Gospel would be propagated,<\/span> <\/span>America,\nthe \u201c<\/span> <\/span>New<\/span>\n<\/span>Land\u201d\nwould be evangelized, and faith in the Lord God would be spread throughout the\nnew nation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John\nWinthrop even took it farther by stating clearly that this new land was\nestablished as<\/span> <\/span>"a modell<\/span> of Christian charity,"<\/span><\/i> <\/span>to\ncharacterize the colonists' endeavor as part of a special pact with God to\ncreate a holy community. <\/sup>He encouraged the colonists to<\/span> <\/span>"bear one another's burdens"<\/span><\/i>, and to view\nthemselves as a<\/span> <\/span>"Company of Christ,\nbound together by Love." <\/sup><\/span><\/i>He told the colonists to be stricter in\ntheir religious conformance than even the Church of England, and to view as\ntheir objective the establishment of a model state. If they did so, God would<\/span> <\/span>"make us a prayse<\/span> and glory, that\nman shall say of succeeding plantacions<\/span>: the Lord\nmake it like that of New England."<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas this setting under which our Constitutional founders came together to\nestablish a single, unifying document which would combine the intentions of the\nindividual colonial charters and create a single new nation out of those\nthirteen colonies.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although\nmuch has been made of Thomas Jefferson\u2019s letter with the reference to the \u201cwall\nof separation,\u201d few people seem to remember that it was Jefferson who, in 1786,\nused the charter for the Virginia colony to draft a bill establishing\nguarantees for the freedom of worshiping God, and setting the stage for the\nFirst Amendment to the now-developing Constitution of the United States.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Fewer\nstill remember that when Jefferson<\/span>\n<\/span>became\nPresident in 1800, he called for preachers from various churches to hold\nworship services in the House of Representatives on a weekly basis. His\nsuccessors followed suit for many years thereafter.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Somewhere\nin my document archives is a copy of a vision that George Washington had for this\ncountry. The vision might be called by some \u201capocalyptic,\u201d but he had an\nexperience in which the Lord allowed him to see some of the very events that\nhave unfolded in this country during the past few years. He carefully wrote the\ndetails of that vision and expressed both his concern and his prayer that God\nwould spare this nation the horrors he was seeing.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\noverwhelming majority of our founding fathers shared a common goal. James\nMadison, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton wrote and published their discussions\nabroad in what we now have compiled as The Federalist Papers. Though these\ndiscussions take on just about every aspect of constitutional law, the same\ncommon goal underlies those discussions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas Noah Webster, however, who summarized our Constitution and all that went\ninto its writing when, in 1833, he wrote,<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201cThe religion which has introduced civil liberty, is the\nreligion of Christ and his apostles ... This is genuine Christianity, and to\nthis we owe our free constitutions and government<\/u> ... the moral principles\nand precepts contained in the Scripture ought to form the basis of all our\ncivil constitutions and laws."<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span><\/i>(emphasis\nmine)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nwhere does this lead us in this modern age of doubt, skepticism, atheism,\nhumanistic teaching and rampant attempts to rewrite our Constitution and Laws\nso as to eliminate all reference to Jesus Christ, to God Almighty, and\/or the\nprevention of anything that could by the remotest stretch of the imagination be\ntermed \u201cgovernment sponsorship of religion?\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ntruth is that our spiritual underpinnings are the entire reason for our\nexistence as a nation. Were it not for the prayer that bathed our beginnings,\nwere it not for the faith expressed by our founders, were it not for the\nabsolute trust in God and the declared intentions to build a nation in which\nthe Lord Jesus Christ would be honored above all else, it is fair to say that\nwe would not exist today as a people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nPsalmist David wrote,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cBlessed is the nation whose\nGod is the Lord, and the people He hath chosen for an inheritance.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>(Psalm\n33:12)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\nsaid, the<\/span> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

United\nStates<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

faces\na crisis at the moment \u2013 a crisis of faith, a crisis of trust in the Lord. We\nhave allowed authority to folks who hate God with a purple passion. They have\ntaken advantage of that authority to create laws and statutes that are\nunconstitutional, that rip away at the very fabric of our existence. We have\ntolerated \u2013 in the name of freedom and liberty \u2013 leaders who, with every fiber\nof their existence, hate the spiritual underpinnings that became the foundation\nof our nation. We have permitted organizations to exist -- such as the ACLU --\nand even provided funding for them, that are systematically destroying the liberties\nour forefathers shed their blood to guarantee.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nhave permitted our educators to stand in our nation\u2019s classrooms for decades\nand undermine our spiritual heritage, attempt to rewrite and revise our\nnation\u2019s history, defame and slander many of our founding fathers with false\naccusation and\/or innuendo, and destroy the trust of our youth in the very\nfabric of our constitution. We have allowed liars to stand in public and \u2013 in\nthe name of constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech \u2013 use that freedom\nto attack any elected leaders who express their faith and trust in God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Four\nyears ago we elected a Muslim for our President, a man who has no compunction\nabout lying and pretending to be a Christian, and all the while demonstrating\nthrough his actions, his hatred and disdain of the God we know, love and serve,\nand His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Now we as a nation are paying the price for\nthat insanity. We are swimming in a sea of debt, spending pretend money to\nfinance social programs that are supposed to be the purview of the body of\nChrist -- not government -- and ripping away at the social fabric of our nation\nby encouraging the murder of the unborn and approving deviant alliances between\nsame sex partners while pretending that this is an acceptable "alternative\nlifestyle' to which we can append and ascribe marriage.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There\nare spiritual laws that are higher than that of our Constitution. There are\nlaws which our forefathers obeyed and utilized as they set our foundations in\nplace which, if praying Christians and believers today do not get a hold of,\nwill bring this nation down. We will fail as every other nation in history if\nwe lose sight of those laws.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nthose who have the opportunity do not seize this time to reverse the laws and\ntrends that have ripped away our liberties to speak out publicly in the name of\nthe Lord Jesus Christ and honor God, America is headed for the kind of woes we\nhave seen other nations suffer.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nright to free speech in this nation is not a guarantee of anarchy. Contrary to\nthe opinions of some, free speech is not a right to treasonous proclamations by\nthose in public leadership. The right to worship God, to praise His name and\nhonor him by public leaders is not some constitutionally-prohibited breach of\nan imagined \u201cwall of separation.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nwe continue to tolerate the observance of this mythical wall, we will most\nassuredly \u2013 in less than a decade \u2013 see the end of the American dream our\nfounding fathers sought to build. Come on people! Stand up and be counted! Get\nyour act together. Challenge the God-haters with their agenda. No matter what\nit costs you personally, get involved in the process to reverse the\ndisintegration of our spiritual fabric.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Whewww<\/span><\/span>\u2026\u2026. OK. Got a bit\npreachy, there! Can\u2019t help it, though. Every bone, every cell, every corpuscle\nin my being says, \u201cNO! YOU WILL NOT<\/b>!!\u201d to those who seek to remove our\nliberties.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe coming days or weeks, I hope to be discussing some of the particular ways\nin which we can bring these trends to a halt \u2013 ways that every one of us have\nat our disposal. In the meantime, have a good and thoughtful day. Meditate on\nthese things.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Most\nof all, be blessed today. Be blessed in the city, blessed in the field, blessed\ncoming in and blessed going out.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
