Once\nagain I'm out of sync with my normal publishing schedule for these Coffee Breaks.Della's<\/span> mother, Opal Hendershot<\/span>,\nwent home to be with the Lord just over a month ago.At<\/span>\n83 years of age she's had a rich and full life, the overwhelming majority of\nwhich was spent walking with the Lord.Ever<\/span> since\nDella's step-dad went home in 2001, we've mostly cared for her mom.She<\/span> outlived both her first husband (Della's natural\nfather) and her second husband.The<\/span> last few years\nhave seen declining health with congestive heart disease and she has repeatedly\nsaid -- and especially during the past few months -- that she wanted to go\nhome.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Even\nthough we've prepared for this day and thought we were quite ready for Mom's homegoing<\/span>, it still caught Della off-guard and turned out\nto be quite a struggle for her emotionally.The<\/span> homegoing<\/span> service Friday, May 11th was nothing short of\nspectacular, being filled with praise, worship and testimonies of lives changed\nor influenced for the sake of the Kingdom of God.Much<\/span>\nof the family was able to gather together for the event with Della's brothers\nand her sister traveling, along with our daughter, Danielle, and her husband,\nAnthony, and our youngest son, Joshua, and his wife, Michelle, all of them from\nAlaska to be here.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Bob\nWidmann<\/span>, who pastors Cornerstone Assembly, did a\nspectacular job of ministering at the funeral, and five people responded to the\nmessage of salvation at the conclusion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nloss of Della's mother meant that we've had estate matters to take care of, and\nthose things have kept us incredibly busy and pushed to long hours with family\nmembers helping to dispose of legal matters and distribution of possessions\nthroughout. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Hopefully,\nthe long-overdue release of this Coffee Break will get things back on track.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nreally could continue our discussion on the Call of the Bridegroom, and perhaps\nthis Coffee Break will serve as an addendum to that study.One<\/span>\nof the things that seems abundantly clear is that there has been an excessive\nfocus within the structured church world on getting people born again and\nmissing entirely the disciplined walk with the Lord Jesus Christ that must\ncommence immediately upon making the initial commitment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreat Commission (as we are so inclined to call it) is not a commission from\nthe Lord to get people "saved."Contrary to some of the popular\ntranslations, Jesus did not simply say, "Go ye therefore and teach all\nnations....."His command was that we go forth and "disciple" all\nnations."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nNASB translates the Greek text accurately, putting it like this:<\/span> <\/span>"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.Go<\/u><\/span> therefore and make disciples of all the\nnations<\/u>, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy\nSpirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with\nyou always, even to the end of the age."<\/span><\/span>(Matthew 28:18-20)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There's\na huge difference between simply preaching and teaching, and "discipling<\/span>." The truth of this understanding really\nbegan to spread throughout the body of Christ during the Charismatic Renewal\nduring the early 1970's.I remember when -- at a World Map Conference -- Bob\nMumford was the scheduled speaker and he stepped aside for Juan Carlos Ortiz to\nshare the remarkable successes of the "discipleship" ministry Juan\nCarlos was seeing in Argentina.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\nhas been and continues to be true, whenever real truth begins to be propagated\nwithin the body of Christ and Christians begin to grow and mature and become a\ngenuine threat to Satan's lies and deception, he seeks to contaminate the\nmessage with extremes and thereby render the truth either unpalatable to most\nChristians or laced with so much error that it becomes totally rejected.I<\/span> watched this take place following Juan Carlos'\nsharing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nworked spectacularly for the Argentinean Revival (as it has been sometimes\nreferred) with the teaching and practical applications of the disciplined walk\nin Christ Jesus mostly failed in North America.It<\/span>\nwasn't that what Juan Carlos Ortiz shared was wrong, or that his methods and\napplications were wrong.The<\/span> problem was that the\nmessage and applications of discipleship as integrated into\nArgentinean culture and life<\/u><\/i><\/b> simply did not translate well into\nAmerican (or more accurately, "westernized") lifestyles and culture.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Many\nof my pastor friends attempted to apply Juan Carlos' methodologies within their\nAmerican churches with explosive and disastrous results.It<\/span>\nbecame known within this country as "the Discipleship Controversy,"\nand because of the failures and damaged lives that resulted from the\nmisapplication of the truth, large segments of the body of Christ rejected the\nwhole idea of being discipled<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Just\nbecause South American methodologies mostly failed in North America doesn't\nmean that the message of discipleship and discipling<\/span>\nwas or is wrong!Far<\/span> from it!Each<\/span>\npart of the world -- OK, let's make it more personal -- each and every segment\nof society has a uniqueness to it that requires a practical understanding and\napplication which makes it work.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let's\ntalk for a minute about some of the practical aspects and principles of true\ndiscipleship.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nwhole idea of a "disciple" is found in the core word: discipline.A<\/span> disciple is one who lives his or her life in a\ndisciplined manner obeying the tenets and principles set forth by the mentor or\nthe teacher or leader under whom they've submitted.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Living\na disciplined life is a whole lot more than simply refraining from certain\nactivities you might otherwise enjoy, or engaging in a certain careful and\ncontrolled lifestyle.The<\/span> "disciple" learns\nto adopt the mindset, the thought processes, the character and the nature of\nhis\/her mentor or instructor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nwas it that happened to Peter when he stood outside warming himself by the fire\nwhile Jesus was being interrogated by those who shortly thereafter crucified\nHim?(See Matthew 26:69-73)First a young girl says to Peter, "You were with\nJesus of Galilee."Shortly thereafter another young woman says to those\nstanding by, "This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A\nshort period of time ensues during which conversation takes place between all\nthose gathered together -- conversation which includes Peter.Pretty<\/span>\nsoon some of those participating in the conversation stop and say to him,\n"You certainly are one of them.Your<\/span> manner of\nspeaking clearly identifies you.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nget the idea, I'm sure.Years<\/span> ago when I was\nministering with Dwain McKenzie at Long Beach Christian Center, Dwain and I\nperiodically participated in conferences at Church on the Way in Van Nuys, California.Anyone<\/span> who's been around Jack Hayford<\/span> for any length of time knows that he has a very\ndistinctive speaking style and expressions you can identify anywhere.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\noften chuckled when we heard some of the elders or young men he was mentoring\nin ministry.If<\/span> you didn't see them and simply heard\nthem speak, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were listening to Jack.They<\/span> had his speaking style down to a "T"\nalong with many of his phrases or expressions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That's\nhow it was with Peter.He'd<\/span> been discipled<\/span>\nby the Lord Jesus Christ.His<\/span> mannerisms were affected.He<\/span> carried on a conversation like Jesus did.He<\/span> spoke like Jesus.He<\/span> had\nyet to be filled with Holy Spirit, however, and as a consequence lacked the\nboldness that comes with that infilling.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because\nJesus was being accused before Caiaphas of blasphemy, Peter's fears kicked in\nand he was afraid of being known in this court setting as an associate or\nfriend of Jesus, or being one of His disciples.In<\/span>\norder, therefore, to convince the bystanders with whom he'd been carrying on a\nconversation that he was not part of Jesus' disciples, he did something that\nwas so uncharacteristic of Jesus as to express himself first with an oath,\nswearing [on his mother's grave?] that he didn't even know Jesus.Then<\/span>\nafter being identified for the third time as one who was normally seen with\nJesus, he tried to convince his accusers with the use of cursing and vulgar\nlanguage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nJesus' mannerisms, His speech and His countenance were known for peace, for\nauthority and (mostly) for exceptional gentleness.Peter<\/span>\nmay have temporarily put off those who questioned his association, but Jesus'\nmentoring, His teaching, His instruction and His discipling<\/span>\nof Peter had made real change.When<\/span> Peter heard the\ncock crow, it shook him to the core of his being.He<\/span>\nrealized that he had done just what Jesus had said he would do: he denied Jesus\nthree times.And<\/span> Peter couldn't stick around.He<\/span> went out and wept bitter, remorseful tears over\nhis betrayal of Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee, Jesus had become Peter's best friend.Yes<\/span>, Jesus\nwas Peter's Lord and Savior.Yes<\/span>, Jesus was the One\nwho had sent him out to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast\nout demons, and preach the Gospel of the Kingdom.And<\/span>\nPeter had seen direct, measurable, tangible results and consequences of\nfunctioning in the very onoma<\/span>, the character and\nnature of the Lord Jesus Christ.That<\/span> ministry had\naffected his household.His<\/span> wife's mother had been\nraised from her sick bed, made completely whole.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nwhen Jesus sent the 70 out, two by two, and told them to<\/span> <\/span>"heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast\nout demons"<\/span>?Then\nJesus said to them,<\/span> <\/span>"freely ye have\nreceived, freely give."<\/span>(Matthew 10:8)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nGreek text uses a fascinating word which our KJV translators rendered as\n"received."The Greek<\/span> <\/span>lambano<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>is\none of those picture words which conveys a whole lot more than our simplified\n"received."This word communicates the transfer or impartation of some\nidea, some truth, some concept by the one (in this case, Jesus) discipling.That<\/span> transfer or impartation is then seized\nupon, laid claim to and possessed by the one receiving the impartation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Does\nthat make it clearer for you?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nlet's take this the next step.One<\/span> cannot disciple or\nbring under certain discipline if one is not himself under discipline.Consider<\/span>\nthe centurion who came to Jesus in desperation on behalf of his servant.Pay<\/span> attention to the very particular wording in\nthis example in the Word.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Luke 7:2-10:<\/span> <\/span>"<\/span>And a certain centurion\u2019s servant, who was dear unto him, was\nsick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders\nof the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when\nthey came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for\nwhom he should do this: For he loveth<\/span> our nation, and\nhe hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now\nnot far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him,\nLord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest<\/span>\nenter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto\nthee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man\nset under authority<\/u>, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and\nhe goeth<\/span>; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to\nmy servant, Do this, and he doeth it<\/i>. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled<\/span> at him, and turned him about, and said unto the\npeople that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no,\nnot in Israel. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the\nservant whole that had been sick."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

First\nof all, the centurion comes to Jesus recognizing that He (Jesus) is under\nFather's authority.He<\/span> understands what being\n"under authority" actually means, namely, that he willingly has\nsubjected himself to the authority of his superiors.He<\/span>\nlives a life of absolute discipline.As<\/span> a result, he\nhimself has been commissioned and placed in authority over 100 soldiers who are\n"under authority" to him as their superior.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\ncenturion recognizes that Jesus operates under the authority of Father with\nFather's commissioning, and that with that place of submission comes the full\nbacking and commitment of Heaven to support whatever command He gives.He<\/span> has both seen and heard of the miracles that Jesus\ndoes and knows that He could never do those things without first having been\ncommissioned and authorized by direct command.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nis perhaps the most basic and fundamental aspect of "discipling<\/span>."The\none who disciples others must first be under the authority of Father, Son and\nHoly Spirit.The<\/span> discipler<\/span>\nmust have personally seen, heard and -- through personal experience -- lived\nand walked the discipline of Father through Jesus Christ, operating through the\npower and enabling of Holy Spirit.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe past 65+ years of walking with the Lord, it has been my pleasure to lead\nmany to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.I've<\/span>\nlost track of the number of people laid hands on to receive the baptism of the\nHoly Spirit with the attendant signs, and couldn't begin to tell you how many\npeople I've baptized in water.That's<\/span> all well and\ngood, but the command of Jesus is a whole lot more than that.The<\/span>\nissue isn't how many folks I've led to the New Birth: the issue is how many\nI've successfully discipled<\/span> in such a way that they\nduplicate the same presence, authority and power of Holy Spirit manifested in\nand through me.That<\/span> number, I'm sorry to say, is a\nwhole lot smaller than the number of those with whom I've prayed for salvation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Evangelism\nis a whole lot more than preaching and leading souls to the Lord.Evangelism<\/span>\n-- at least Jesus' definition of evangelism -- incorporates living a\ndisciplined life under the command of Holy Spirit.True<\/span>\nevangelism involves becoming involved with those whom you lead to Jesus and discipling<\/span> them so that the same Word of Life, the same\nWord of Faith, the same Word of Love exhibited in your life is duplicated and\nmanifested in them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Make\nsense?Good!Let<\/span> me share a personal experience -- one\nfrom 65 years ago for the sake of illustration.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As\na five-year-old, I lived, breathed, walked and talked Jesus.My<\/span>\nfather was my discipler<\/span> at the time, and I wanted in\nthe worst way to duplicate the pattern I saw in him.I<\/span>\npreached, testified, cajoled and did everything I could to persuade my friends\nand playmates that they needed to commit themselves to Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It\nwas the winter of 1947.We lived at the time in Nome, Alaska.It<\/span>\nwas a particularly brutal winter with temperatures at or near 40 below zero for\na period of several weeks.The<\/span> winter had begun with a\nhuge snowfall and subsequent winds had piled the snow in drifts so high you\ncould literally climb up on the roof of our church building.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Of\ncourse the blowing wind, coupled with the cold temperatures, made the snow rock\nhard; and that made it perfect for a bunch of kids who wanted to make snow caves,\nigloos, or whatever.My<\/span> brother and I, however, had a\ndifferent plan.We<\/span> borrowed one of Dad's hand saws and\ncut out a room roughly 8 X 8 X 5 in a huge snow bank that swept over our house\nand church.Naturally<\/span>, we cut out a neat door and window.We<\/span> followed that with cutting blocks of hardened\nsnow which made a perfect bench, an altar, a podium to preach from; and,\npresto! Mom gave us some candles to use for light, and we had ourselves a\nlittle church!Now<\/span>, don't laugh.It<\/span>\nwas serious business to us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfirst order of business was to gather our friends and playmates to "have\nchurch."Howie<\/span> (my brother) led the singing.I<\/span> preached a 15 or 20-minute salvation message and\nhad "an altar call" just like Dad's.It<\/span>\nwasn't a game, and I wasn't pretending.This<\/span> took\nplace during a three-year period between the ages of four and seven when I had\nconstant visitations from angels.Mom<\/span> had taught me to\nread by reading the Bible, and by this time I knew it fairly well -- at least I\nknew the pertinent parts of it as far as salvation and baptism were concerned.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee, I was learning from Dad's example and the pattern he'd set for me.He<\/span> was my discipler.Three<\/span> of\nmy playmates that day responded to the salvation message and knelt at that snow\naltar to receive Jesus Christ.Their<\/span> response was real\nand from that day forward I continued to teach them from the Word.I<\/span> could only teach, of course, those things that were\nreal to me, but my objective was to transmit them into the lives of my three\nfriends.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Well,\nat forty below zero, you don't baptize anyone in water, so you wait until\nspring when water (especially after an abundant winter like that one) abounds.Seems<\/span> like it was in May or early June when the\ntemperatures were between 40 and 50 degrees (above zero, of course) and deep\nmud puddles flourished everywhere.(When Dad built the church in Nome he didn't\ninclude a baptismal tank, so we just did the logical thing.)By now I had passed\nmy sixth birthday.My<\/span> friends were ready to be\nbaptized, and we found a suitable mud puddle where they could be immersed.We<\/span> didn't think about changes of clothes or\nanything like that.I<\/span> walked into the water and, one\nby one, they came in after me to be baptized.I<\/span> never\nknew whether they got in trouble with their folks for coming home soaking wet\nin their clothes, but we all knew that we had taken the proper steps as far as\nthe Lord was concerned!(OK, no fair laughing!Like<\/span> I\nsaid, it was real and we were serious!)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe years that followed, all three of those first converts went on to become\nstrong Christian believers, and one of them went on into pastoral ministry.It<\/span> was my first experience at discipling<\/span>,\nand I followed the pattern that my discipler<\/span>, Dad,\nhad set for me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\nme wrap up this Coffee Break with a simple and practical definition of\ndiscipleship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

To\ndisciple (according to Jesus' command) means to essentially duplicate the Jesus\nin you in someone else.There's<\/span> more to this picture,\nbut I think I'll leave it there for today.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One of the greatest revelations we can\never embrace is that whatever we do in life, <\/span><\/b>is ministry<\/span><\/i><\/b>, because the light of\nGod in us and through us never goes dim. Every job, every assignment, our\nfamily, our leisure and whatever pathway that the Holy Spirit may lead us, <\/span><\/b>is ministry<\/span><\/i><\/b>."<\/span><\/b> <\/span>(Robert Ricciardelli<\/span>)<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
