Before we get started with today\u2019s\ndiscussion, let me finish our last discussion with a few comments. And, by the\nway, thanks to Rich and DeAngela<\/span> Warren, we have a\nreally nice new French Press. It makes roughly 38 ounces of the best coffee\nyou\u2019ve ever had, and I\u2019ve got a mix of Double-Roasted French and some\nmedium-roasted Swedish coffee (again thanks to Rich and DeAngela<\/span>)\nsteeping in it as we speak.If<\/span> you\u2019re in the\nneighborhood, stop by and join me in a cup.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As Elliott Green notes in his legal\nargument (see<\/span> <\/span>http:\/\/www.think-israel.org\/green.sanremo.html<\/span><\/a>),<\/span> <\/span>The San Remo decision for the Jewish\nNational Home was ratified by the League of Nations in 1922 and endorsed by a\njoint resolution of the United States Congress that same year, with a more\nofficial US endorsement coming in the Anglo-American Convention on Palestine\n(proclaimed 1925).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When the UN was founded in 1945, it\nreaffirmed through its Charter the existing territorial rights of peoples as\nthey had been before the war (Article 80). This applied of course to the Jewish\nNational Home. However, many or most people today are either not aware that the\nwhole country constituted the Jewish National Home, or believe that the UN had\nsomehow eliminated this status and, in any case, had fixed legal boundaries for\nIsrael through the 1947 Partition Resolution. Yet the 1947 resolution was\npassed by the General Assembly. And all General Assembly resolutions on\npolitical issues are merely recommendations. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n


\n<\/span>The UN Charter states, defining the\npowers of the various UN bodies: "The General Assembly may discuss any\nquestions relating to the maintenance of international peace and security...\nand... may make recommendations with regard to any such question" (Article\n11; also see Arts. 10, 12, 13, 14). Only the Security Council can make binding\nresolutions, according to the Charter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n


\n<\/span>Now the Partition Plan, in a not\nuncommon display of political irrealism<\/span>, recommended\ntwo states in the former mandatory Palestine west of the Jordan, one Jewish and\none Arab, plus a special status for Jerusalem (The British had separated\nTransjordan unilaterally from the Jewish National Home in 1922, although not de\njure). The Holy City was to be an internationally governed corpus separatum<\/span>. While the Jewish leadership accepted the Plan,\nthe Arab governments and local Arab leadership universally rejected it. After\nthe war had begun the UN made no effort to prevent the invasion of the country\nby Arab states, to prevent Arab attacks on Jews within the country or to\neliminate the Arab siege of the Jews in Jerusalem, a city where Jews had been\nthe majority at least since 1870. Thus Israel did not feel bound by the\nPartition recommendation. Professor Eugene Rostow<\/span>, an\nauthority on international law, has pointed out that the Arab war on Israel of\n1947-49, "made the Partition Plan irrelevant."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The demand, therefore, by the current\nadministration in the White House (operating in agreement with the demands of\nthe Arab League) that Israel return to the lines originally outlined by the\npartition of 1947-1949 ignores completely the fact that lands being illegally occupied\nby the Palestinians were legitimately restored to Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.For<\/span> anyone \u2013 our nation\u2019s leaders especially \u2013 to\ndemand that Israel give those lands back in exchange for peace is illogical and\nhypocritical. Once you start down that road, one could logically argue that the\nUnited States should give back Texas and California to Mexico (and there are a\ngroup of radicals \u2013 La Raza<\/span>, for example \u2013 who are\npushing for just that!)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It simply flies in the face of reason!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s never<\/b> going to happen,\nand any effort at a government level to begin negotiating such an action would\nbe regarded as treason. By the same token, for the U.S. \u2013 or any other national\nentity \u2013 to presuppose that Israel should surrender territory won by the blood\nof its soldiers and its citizens, and (more than that) territory given to\nAbraham, Isaac and Jacob by God as an everlasting<\/u> inheritance (the\nHebrew text renders the word \u201c<\/span>o\u2019lam<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u201d eternity, or: eternity of eternities,\nperpetual, to a point in time beyond the vanishing point [Gesenius<\/span>]\n\u2013 see Genesis 17:8,19 \u2013 is arrogant beyond words!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Getting back to the San Remo Accord, it\nis important to understand that nothing has changed since that charter was\ngiven for the reestablishment of the Jewish homeland. No legally binding action\nof any kind has taken place which abrogated that charter. The fact that the\nArab nations refused to agree to a two-state solution recommended by the United\nNations negated the whole idea of a separate \u201cPalestine.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There has never been a nation or state\nrecognized internationally as Palestine \u2013 just a designated region of the\nMiddle East. Politically speaking, Israel has agreed conceptually to a\nPalestinian state, but that agreement has always been founded upon the basic\ntenet that the Arab peoples who call themselves \u201cPalestinians\u201d must agree to\nrecognize Israel as a Jewish state.The<\/span> \u201cPalestinians\u201d\nhave never<\/b> agreed to recognize Israel as a Jewish state \u2013 ever!<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although Israel was already legally\nentitled to what was being referred to as \u201cthe West Bank,\u201d \u201cGaza,\u201d the Sinai\nand \u201cthe Golan\u201d under the San Remo Accord, when Egypt, Jordan and Syria\nattacked Israel in 1967, Israel won those territories by right of conquest; and\nthey both legally and by right of war have the absolute claim to those lands. Any\nsuggestion to the contrary is based in utter ignorance of the laws, charters\nand internationally recognized claims of war.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We could take this argument farther,\nbut that pretty much covers it. Let\u2019s talk now about Israel\u2019s destiny.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Scripture actually speaks of four Israels<\/span>. If that sounds really strange, let me explain.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

1.<\/span><\/b>The\nfirst Israel we would describe as \u201cPolitical or Secular Israel.\u201dThis is\nrepresented by the governing leadership \u2013 the political structure that governs\nthe nation\u2019s day-to-day activities.This<\/span> leadership is\n(to quote Carl Gallups<\/span>) \u201cthoroughly secularized and\nGodless.\u201dThis Israel simply reflects the sin nature in the same way that\npolitical or secular leadership of other nations is sinful and Godless.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

2.<\/span><\/b>The\nsecond is \u201cReligious Israel.\u201dThis is that part of the people or nation that\npractices Orthodox Judaism. Jesus often addressed the religious people of that\nera \u2013 the Scribes and Pharisees \u2013 rebuking them for their adherence to\nlegalistic obedience while utterly ignoring the spiritual nature of their whole\nexistence as a people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

3.<\/span><\/b>Third\nis the geographical land that God gave by covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.Prophecies<\/span> abound throughout Scripture \u2013 both Old and\nNew Testaments \u2013 in which geographical Israel plays an important role. Many of\nthe O.T. prophets prophesied the day when Israel \u2013 the people \u2013 would be\nrestored to their land, and their land to them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

4.<\/span><\/b>And\nfourth is what we could call \u201cSpiritual Israel.\u201dPaul goes to great lengths in\nRomans to lay out the picture of the Israel of God\u2019s destiny, describing it as\nthose Jews (or Israelites) who accept Yeshua<\/span> HaMaschiach<\/span> (Jesus (the) Christ), along with the grafted-in\npeoples of all the nations of the world who also turn from their idols to\nworship Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is important to make a distinction\nhere before we continue.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah often prophesied of and to\nJerusalem and in so doing, prophesying to Israel (the nation) as a whole. But\nhe made a clear distinction (just as David did) between Jerusalem (the city)\nand Zion, where his Tabernacle sat (as the place of intimacy, the place of\nGod\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>Parousia<\/span><\/i><\/span>) His immediate presence.Jerusalem<\/span> was the larger picture of God\u2019s people.Zion<\/span> was the picture of a holy, set apart,\nalways-in-tune-with-Him people whom Jesus likened to the five wise virgins.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

While Jerusalem always represented\nGod\u2019s people as a whole, Zion was the place where David established his\nTabernacle. It was the place of continuous praise, worship, prayer and\nintercession, all taking place before the Ark of the Covenant, which represented\nthe marriage between the Lord and His Chosen and Called-Out Bride.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There are numerous references to Zion\nas \u201cthe city of David\u201d \u2013 a phrase which many have taken to apply to Jerusalem\nas a whole. However, what gets missed in the translation from Hebrew is the\nfact that Zion (<\/span>tsiyon<\/span><\/i><\/span>\n<\/span>in Hebrew) actually\nmeans: a conspicuous place, a monument or guiding pillar<\/u>. The term,\nZion, was initially meant to apply to the place of David\u2019s Tabernacle.David\u2019s<\/span>\nTabernacle was set on a high place so that Israel could see it as a visible\nreference \u2013 a mark of God\u2019s presence and covenant in and with the land. David\u2019s\nappointment of the families of Asaph<\/span>, Heman<\/span> and Jeduthun<\/span> became a\nvisual and audible representation of the seven-lamped Golden Candlestick.The<\/span> Golden Candlestick (in Moses\u2019 Tabernacle)\nsignified the worship of a loving Bride with its flames of passion burning day\nand night.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The name, Jerusalem, is a compound name\nwith two root words:<\/span> <\/span>yeru<\/span><\/i><\/span>, [yaru<\/span>] [yarush<\/span>] (Jerus<\/span>)<\/span><\/i>, meaning: foundations<\/u>\n(or: to found or establish<\/u>); and:<\/span>\n<\/span>Salem, shalam<\/span> [shalom]<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> <\/span>meaning:\npeace, safety, to be complete, to be prosperous, to be restored, restitution.We<\/span><\/span><\/u>\nreduce it to: \u201cthe foundations of peace.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You may recall that this city was first\nestablished by Shem, the son of Noah. It began as a citadel in the years after\nthe great flood. Shem built it as a city and a place of safety for his bride,\nand named it Salem. He occupied this citadel and exerted righteous influence\nthroughout the land of Canaan and much of the Middle East for roughly 500\nyears.(It\u2019s not a wonder, therefore, that they referred to him as being without\nfather or mother, without beginning or ending of days! He outlived many\ngenerations.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because of his act of tracking down\nNimrod with a band of twelve men following the scattering of people at Babel,\nkilling Nimrod, cutting his body up into twelve pieces and sending a piece to\neach of the rulers in the region with the message \u201cThus shall it be done to\nthose who rise up against God,\u201d the inhabitants of the land began to refer to\nhim as Malkiy<\/span> \u2013 Tsedeq<\/span> (the\nKing of Right or Righteousness).We have his name Anglicized as \u201cMelchizedek.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Following Shem\u2019s death in the year that\nJoseph was sold into slavery in Egypt, the descendants of Canaan\u2019s son, Jerus<\/span>, (Canaan was the firstborn son of Ham, Shem\u2019s\nbrother) moved into the citadel and began to occupy it. Because Jerus<\/span> had developed a military tactic of crushing the grain\nfields of his enemies and rendering the grains unplantable<\/span>\nfor a new crop, his sons renamed him from \u201cJerus<\/span>\u201d to\n\u201cJebus<\/span>,\u201d which means \u201ccrushing.\u201dThus the city of\nSalem became known throughout some five-to-six centuries as \u201cJebus<\/span>\u201d (the city of the Jebusites<\/span>)\nuntil David captured it. Once David had the city, and once the Tabernacle of\nDavid occupied Zion, the city became known forever as Jerusalem \u2013 Yerushalayim<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We thus have two distinct\ncharacteristics within Jerusalem \u2013 that of the city and its occupants, and that\nof Zion as the place of David\u2019s Tabernacle, and ultimately Solomon\u2019s Temple (on\nthe adjoining hill).Jerusalem became known as \u201cthe city of God,\u201d (i.e., the\nCity of God\u2019s people).Zion was distinguished within the city as the place of\ncovenant, the place of intimacy, the place of praise and worship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You therefore have a people of God; and\nwithin that people is a smaller, more intimate group of people near to the\nheart of God whose entire existence revolves about seeing that His heart\u2019s\ndesires are met and fulfilled. It has become the picture of the body of Christ\nat large \u2013 we often refer to it in error as \u201cthe Church\u201d \u2013 and within that\nlarger body is a small segment, a remnant if you will, of people prophetic\nScriptures identify as \u201cthe Bride.\u201d(I won\u2019t take the time in this discussion to\ndeal with this subject at length since it would take us too far afield from our\ncentral point.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve said all that to say this,\nIsrael\u2019s future and destiny are spoken of prophetically throughout the Word. Let\u2019s\naddress the geographical land of Israel, the Jewish people, and Jerusalem to\nbegin with.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 62:1-4:<\/span> <\/span>For Zion\u2019s sake will I\nnot hold my peace, and for Jerusalem\u2019s sake I will not rest, until the\nrighteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a\nlamp that burneth.And<\/span> the nations and peoples\n(Gentiles) shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt<\/span> be called by a new name (shem<\/span>:<\/span><\/i> <\/span>character, makeup, personality<\/span><\/u>), which the mouth of the LORD shall name.Thou<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> shalt<\/span> also be a\ncrown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.Thou<\/span> shalt<\/span> no more be termed\nForsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt<\/span> be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the\nLORD delighteth<\/span> in thee, and thy land shall be\nmarried.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 65:8-10:<\/span>Thus saith<\/span> the LORD,\nAs the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith<\/span>,\nDestroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants\u2019 sakes,\nthat I may not destroy them all.And<\/span> I will bring\nforth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and\nmine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.And<\/span>\nSharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor<\/span>\na place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is important to remember that Isaiah\nis prophesying directly to Israel. While there certainly is a spiritual\nrelevance to these prophecies that applies to the body of Christ, and to the\nBride in this day, that is only one part of the picture. Israel was Isaiah\u2019s\nfocus, and he is literally covering the different parts of the nation in these\nwords.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He first addresses the people AND the\ncity of Jerusalem (<\/span>For Zion\u2019s sake will I\nnot hold my peace, and for Jerusalem\u2019s sake I will not rest, until the\nrighteousness thereof go forth as brightness<\/span><\/i>); he then speaks to the land (<\/span>neither shall thy land any more be termed desolate<\/span><\/i>).This prophetic word\nall by itself makes clear that Jerusalem will never be given over to an Arab\nnation or people as its capital.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now Isaiah addresses some of the\ngeographical aspects of the land of Israel when he says, \u201c<\/span>I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out\nof Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my\nservants shall dwell there.<\/span><\/i>\u201dWhile Isaiah refers to the \u201cseed out of Jacob\u201d he literally\nspeaks to all the territory that God promised to Abraham \u2013 and that\u2019s a whole\nlot more than Israel currently occupies!\u201cJudah\u201d is modern-day \u201cJudea and\nSamaria\u201d in the West Bank.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next he refers to opposite sides of the\ncountry: Sharon, which is a 30-mile stretch of land bordering the Mediterranean\nbeginning just south of modern-day Haifa and extending south toward Netanya<\/span>; and the \u201cValley of Achor<\/span>\u201d\nwhich runs along both sides of the Jordan River (both East and West Bank) and\nencompasses the area formerly occupied by the ancient city of Jericho.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019m running short of time today so\nlet\u2019s get to the pictures of both religious (Orthodox Judaism) and spiritual\nIsrael.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider Paul\u2019s statement as Romans 11\nbegins:<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God\nforbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of\nBenjamin.<\/span><\/i> <\/span>God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Clearly God has not forsaken His\npeople. Paul was a Pharisee, a member of Orthodox Judaism, before his Damascus\nroad experience. Now he speaks to Israel\u2019s redemption \u2013 AND to ours as the seed\nof Abraham by faith!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this\nmystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is\nhappened to Israel, until the fulness<\/span> of the Gentiles\nbe come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall\ncome out of Sion<\/span> the Deliverer, and shall turn away\nungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take\naway their sins. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but\nas touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers\u2019 sakes. For the\ngifts and calling of God are without repentance. For as ye in times past have\nnot believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: Even so\nhave these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain\nmercy.<\/span><\/i>(Romans\n11:25-31)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus, Paul makes it abundantly clear\nthat religious Israel was allowed to go into a place of spiritual blindness so\nthat the rest of the world (the Gentiles) could have access to the mercy and\ngrace of the Lord Jesus Christ. But that period of blindness was only for a\nseason \u2013 not for all time!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s how Jesus put it:<\/span> <\/span>\u201cAnd they<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(the\nJews as a whole)<\/span> <\/span>shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away\ncaptive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles,\nuntil the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.\u201d<\/span><\/i>(Luke 21:24)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Without taking a lot of time to deal\nwith the subject (it really is lengthy when you get into it) John speaks of two\ngroups of 144,000 in Revelation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The first group is seen as a metaphor\nfor Israel itself:<\/span> <\/span>And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were\nsealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children\nof Israel.<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>(Revelation 7:4)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The second group John describes as\nbeing \u201credeemed from among men.\u201d<\/span>And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before\nthe four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the\nhundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. These\nare they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are\nthey which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth<\/span>.\nThese were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits<\/span>\nunto God and to the Lamb.<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(Revelation 14:3-4)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The number, 144,000, is a Hebrew\nmetaphor. It is a prophetic picture. It is 12 taken to completion. Throughout\nScripture you see the number twelve appearing many times. It essentially\ndescribes a group of people in training and processing and preparation to rule.\nYou see it in Israel, and you see it in the body of Christ at large. The\n144,000 represents the completion of that training and preparation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The two groups that John sees in\nRevelation, therefore, describe the completed Bride of Christ \u2013 a portion made\nfrom a trained and prepared Israel and a portion made from those grafted into\nChrist from among every nation and language as the seed of Abraham by faith.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus the destiny of Israel is our\ndestiny as committed and sold-out believers in Jesus Christ. We are inseparable!\nIsrael was God\u2019s original pattern people for the world. Despite the nation\u2019s\nfall into sin and departure from serving God, He would not forsake them nor\nabolish His covenant with them. Thus their redemption is taking place \u2013 even as\nwe speak. I\u2019m told by friends in Israel that an increasing number of Jewish\nRabbis are coming to the recognition that Yeshua<\/span> HaMaschiach<\/span> was and is their promised redeemer, and that\nnumber of Rabbis is approaching the 50% level. The Lord IS going to show\nHimself strong on Israel\u2019s behalf, and the nation will turn to Him!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus is returning for a sold-out,\ncommitted, processed-in-the-fire, spot- and wrinkle-free Bride. That\u2019s a people\n\u2013 Jews included \u2013 who DO KNOW THEIR GOD, who are strong and will do\nexploits!(See Daniel 11:32)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As Christians we have a mandate from the Lord to bless Israel.\nMore than that, the cry of the Lord through Isaiah is to \u201cgive Him no rest,\ntill He establish, and till He make Jerusalem a praise in the earth!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
