G\u2019Mornin<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u2019!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In case\nyou aren\u2019t aware of it (and I suspect most of you are), the Lord is trying to\nget us delivered from our religious boxes, our preconceived notions of how He\noperates, and what He would like to do through us<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In previous Coffee\nBreaks, I\u2019ve shared with you some of my experiences of being transported in the\nrealm of the Spirit out of this time-space \u201ccontinuum\u201d and into eternity on\nnumerous occasions and seen many things in God \u2013 many of which I haven\u2019t been\nfree to share. Last Friday night I heard Mahesh Chavda<\/span>\nshare a personal experience that just lit my fire! Mahesh was speaking at an\nAbiding Glory Conference in Knoxville. (His name may not necessarily be a\nhousehold word for some of you, but he and his wife, Bonnie, have a regular\ntelevision program on TBN.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Talk about an\nout-of-the-box experience! He had been asked to pray for a man who was\nexperiencing extreme liver failure and was at death\u2019s door. As he began to\npray, the Lord transported him into what appeared to be a bubble. He looked\naround and saw the Lord there in the bubble with him. All of a sudden, almost\nlike a scene out of the movie, \u201cFantastic Voyage,\u201d the bubble shrank and Mahesh\nfound himself walking about inside this man\u2019s liver \u2013 with the Lord!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It takes no great\nimagination for you to understand his shock and amazement at what he was\nseeing, but as he and the Lord walked about the liver, healing was taking\nplace. Just as suddenly as they entered, they transported out and he was back\nin the room as his normal self. In that same instant, the man whom he had\nprayed for was instantly whole. The liver problems were gone and the man was\nreleased from the hospital in perfect health.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That may sound like\nOne Step Beyond, or maybe The Twilight Zone to some of you, but, Hey! It\u2019s\nabout time we stopped restricting how God operates and trying to box Him in\naccording to our preconceived notions! Call me weird or anything you like, but\nI immediately asked the Lord to allow me to begin having those kinds of experiences.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I didn\u2019t realize how\nquickly the Lord was going to answer my request. Sunday morning, Steven Shelley\nwas sharing about an issue that has cropped up with our friend and brother in\nthe Lord, Neville Johnson. It was the first we\u2019d heard that Neville had been\nadmitted to the hospital (he lives in Australia) and the doctors discovered\nnumerous very invasive tumors throughout his body. They quickly put him on the\noperating table to remove as many as they could find.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Although the doctors\nwere hopeful that they had caught them soon enough and felt like the operation\nwas successful, it left Neville in fairly weakened condition and unable to keep\nseveral speaking engagements. (We are expecting to see him next month in Red\nDeer, Alberta at a gathering.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Because Neville\u2019s\nministry and teaching have impacted virtually every single person who is part\nof our River Worship Center family, we took time to lift him before the Lord\nyesterday. While we were praying, I suddenly found myself walking around inside\nNeville\u2019s body looking at tumors that had been missed and watching the Lord\nheal him. I saw the scars from the operation disappear as the Lord restored\nhim.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

OK! OK! Don\u2019t look at\nme in that tone of voice! I haven\u2019t lost it\u2026 um\u2026 maybe I have lost my mind, but\nthat\u2019s a good thing. I look forward to losing my mind completely in favor of\nhaving the mind of Christ. (See Philippians 2:5.) Nevertheless, I expect to\nhear that Neville has been completely healed and restored, and I\u2019m being bold\nenough to share this with you even before I receive a report from him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now, if you dare and\nyou don\u2019t think it\u2019ll be a waste of time (considering what I\u2019ve just shared),\nlet\u2019s resume with our discussion on the Keys of the Kingdom.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

FORGIVENESS: THE\nFUNDAMENTAL KEY<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s begin with a Scripture we\u2019ve\nalready used a couple of times during this study series:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mark 11:22-26<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>22<\/span><\/sup><\/i>And Jesus answering saith<\/span>\nunto them, Have (<\/span><\/i>echo<\/span><\/i>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>possess, retain, hold\nonto, keep<\/span><\/i><\/b>) [the] faith in God. 23<\/sup>For\nverily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto (<\/span><\/i>epo<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>command, call,\ndeclare, decree<\/span><\/i><\/b>)<\/span><\/i> <\/span>this mountain, Be thou\nremoved, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt (<\/span><\/i>diakrino<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>oppose, hesitate,\ndiscriminate, waver<\/span><\/i><\/b>)\nin his heart, but shall believe (<\/span><\/i>pisteuo<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>have faith in, to\nentrust fully<\/span><\/i><\/b>) that those things which\nhe saith<\/span> shall come to pass; he shall have (<\/span><\/i>esomai<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span><\/i>will be<\/span><\/i><\/b>) whatsoever he saith<\/span>.\n24<\/sup>Therefore I say unto you, What things soever<\/span>\nye desire, when ye pray, (proseuchomai<\/span>:<\/span><\/i> <\/span>request\nor require in the covenant<\/span><\/i><\/b>)<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>believe (<\/span><\/i>pisteuo<\/span><\/i><\/span>)<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>that ye receive them,\nand ye shall have them. 25<\/sup>And when ye stand praying, forgive (<\/span><\/i>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>: remit<\/b><\/span><\/i>, dissolve, cause to cease to exist<\/span><\/i><\/b>)<\/span><\/i><\/b>, <\/b>if ye have ought<\/span> against any:\nthat your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses (<\/span><\/i>paraptoma<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>side slip, lapse in\njudgment, error\u2014intentional or unintentional, sin<\/span><\/i><\/b>).<\/span><\/i><\/b>\n<\/span>26<\/span><\/sup><\/i>But if ye do not forgive, neither will your\nFather which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus is making it abundantly clear\nthat we can move mountains, perform stupendous miracles, demonstrate unlimited\nfaith \u2014 as long as we forgive all those who have sinned against us,\ncommitted offenses toward us or wronged us in any way \u2014 no matter how great or\nhow slight.<\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You see the connection, don\u2019t you?\nUnlimited power and resources from the Kingdom are available to us so long as\nthere is no unforgiveness<\/span> of any kind residing in our\nhearts and minds. Remember our first discussion on the Keys of the Kingdom, and\nwhere that discussion began?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Access to the Keys begins with a\nrevelation of Jesus Christ. With that revelation first in place, Jesus then\nsays to the disciples,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cAnd<\/u><\/i><\/span>\n<\/span><\/u><\/i>I will give you the\nauthority and power<\/span><\/u><\/i> <\/span>to lock and unlock Heaven so what whatever you\nbind, restrict or stop on earth shall be, having been already bound, restricted\nor stopped in Heaven.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd whatever you break up, loose, dissolve or put off on earth\nshall be, having already been broken up, loosed, dissolved or put off in\nHeaven.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again, the key phrase here is, \u201cI WILL\nGIVE you the authority and power. It hadn\u2019t yet been given because the Holy\nSpirit had not yet been released. As a foretaste \u2014 a sample \u2014 of what was to\ncome with that release of the Spirit, John records the following when Jesus\nrose from the dead and appeared to His disciples.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

REMISSION AND RETENTION<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John 20:21-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>21<\/span><\/sup><\/i>Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto\nyou: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22<\/sup>And when he\nhad said this, he breathed on them, and saith<\/span> unto\nthem, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23<\/sup>Whose soever<\/span>\nsins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever<\/span>\nsins ye retain, they are retained.<\/b><\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Get it? The very first exercise of the\npower of God for those who receive the Holy Spirit is to remit sin \u2014 to\neradicate it in a person\u2019s life such that it never existed.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The second exercise of the power of God\nis to \u201ckrateo<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u201d\nsomeone\u2019s sins. There are several ways in which we can apply this: Most of our\nEnglish translations translate<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>krateo<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u201d to \u201cretain.\u201d However, this word comes\nfrom it root, \u201ckratos<\/span><\/i><\/span>,\u201d<\/span> <\/span>which means: to rule over, to seize by force, to use strength to\ntake hold of. Let me take a momentary side-trip in the Greek to give you an\nexample of this word in a sense you are more familiar with.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ephesians 6:12<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>For we wrestle not\nagainst flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against\nthe rulers of the darkness of this world<\/u>, against spiritual wickedness\nin high places.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This phrase \u201crulers of the darkness of\nthis world\u201d should be better rendered, \u201cworld rulers of darkness,\u201d and is\ntranslated from the Greek word,<\/span> <\/span>kosmokrator<\/span><\/i><\/span>, which is a conjunction of \u201ckosmos<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u201d (the\nworld [as an orderly and decorated version of what otherwise exists\nuniversally]) and \u201ckrateo<\/span><\/i><\/span>\u201d\n(to rule over).<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Message Translation of John 20:23\nexpresses this rather uniquely.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John 20:22-23 (Message\nTranslation<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. \u201cReceive the\nHoly Spirit,\u201d He said. \u201cIf you forgive someone\u2019s sins, they\u2019re gone for good. If\nyou don\u2019t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The concept of \u201cretaining\nsins,\u201d therefore, is to take control of them in one\u2019s life. I don\u2019t want to\ntake this concept farther than what the Word allows us, but we see an example\nof this where Paul is writing to the Corinthians concerning a man who has been\nfound to be in an ongoing incestuous relationship (<\/span>porneia<\/span><\/i><\/span>) from\nwhich he will not depart.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

THE PURPOSE OF RETENTION<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I Corinthians 5:3-5<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/i><\/b>\n<\/span>3<\/span><\/sup><\/i>For I verily, as absent in body, but present\nin spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that\nhath so done this deed, 4<\/sup>In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when\nye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus\nChrist, 5<\/sup>To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of\nthe flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are you seeing this? Paul is\n\u201cretaining\u201d this man\u2019s sins because of his persistence and refusal to repent.\nHe has exercised authority over those sins so that the man is given over to\nSatan \u201cfor the destruction of the flesh\u201d so that this man\u2019s spirit and soul may\nbe saved.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What is God\u2019s intention here?\nSalvation! Here\u2019s a man who is an active member of the Ekklesia<\/span>\nin Corinth. Corinth \u2014 as a city \u2014 was as corrupt and sinful as any city could\nget. The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah filled Corinth. In this Ekklesia<\/span>,\nwe have a man who, though he has accepted Jesus Christ as His Savior, still has\nthe contamination of his soul and his flesh with the sins of sexual perversion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Since God\u2019s purpose is the redemption\nof<\/span> <\/span>His<\/span> <\/span>\u201cpurchased possession\u201d<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(see\nEphesians 1:14) if a person has genuinely made a commitment to walk with Jesus\nChrist, but doesn\u2019t \u2014 for whatever reason \u2014 shake the sins of the flesh, it\nthen becomes the responsibility of believers (who are intimately acquainted\nwith the person in bondage) to \u201cretain,\u201d take possession and rule over their\nsins in such a way as to ensure their final salvation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

There is one other application to the\nconcept of \u201cretaining\u201d and that relates to the individual who refuses to accept\nthe repentance of another brother or sister who seeks reconciliation. The\nperson who refuses reconciliation and rejects the repentance of another brother\nor sister becomes guilty themselves of unforgiveness<\/span>.\nThey \u201cretain\u201d that sin, holding onto it, and as a result do not receive forgiveness\nfrom the Lord.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus made it perfectly clear that<\/span> <\/span>\u201cif ye do not forgive,\nneither will your Father which is in Heaven forgive your trespasses.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If we are not forgiven, then we have no\nredemption because we have effectively rejected Jesus\u2019 death on the Cross and\nnullified for ourselves His ultimate sacrifice. Forgiveness \u2014 Remission and\nErasure \u2014 of sin is, therefore, of critical importance to God\u2019s plan, and He\nhas made it of paramount importance for us as believers. As a matter of fact,\nwe are commanded to provide forgiveness for brothers and sisters we see falling\ninto sin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

A NEW DIMENSION TO\nFORGIVENESS<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider, therefore, what John writes\nin his first general letter to the Body of Christ. Look at the context of this\ncommand.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I John 5:13-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>13<\/span><\/sup><\/i>These things have I written unto you that\nbelieve on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal\nlife, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14<\/sup>And\nthis is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according\nto his will, he heareth<\/span> us: 15<\/sup>And if we\nknow that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions\nthat we desired of him. 16<\/sup>If any man see his brother sin a sin which\nis not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin\nnot unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for\nit. 17<\/sup>All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

How many times have you heard verses 14\nand 15 quoted to substantiate and validate our requests \u2014 in faith, of course \u2014\nto the Lord? OK, how many times have you considered the will<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>thelema<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>desire, pleasure, inclination) of\nJesus?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Peter tells us the following:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Peter 3:9<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>The Lord is not slack\nconcerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to\nus-ward, not willing<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(<\/span><\/i>boulomai<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>to be disposed\ntowards, desiring, leaning towards, intending<\/span>)<\/span><\/i> <\/span>that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is probably fair to say that many\nbelievers \u2014 large percentages \u2014 are far more focused on what they get out of\ntheir relationship with Jesus Christ than what He gets. When they read these\nscriptures, their first thought is \u201cOK, Good! I\u2019ll just claim this for\nmyself. After all I\u2019m praying according to the will of God.<\/i><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s fine, and there is a valid truth\nthere, but look again at the context.<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201cIf we ask anything\naccording to His heart\u2019s desire, He hears us. If we know that He hears us, then\nwe know that we have the petition that we ask.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

All good so far.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But here\u2019s the kicker! It is within\nthe framework of asking according to His will<\/u> that He gives this command<\/b>:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cIf any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death,\nhe shall ask, and He shall give him life for them that sin not unto death.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This is not a suggestion: this is a\ncommand! This is a specifically commanded use of the Keys of the Kingdom. This\nis the authority to overcome the power of the Enemy and set people free!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM\nARE GIVEN US TO FREE GOD'S PEOPLE<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Keys of the Kingdom are given to us\nto ensure that the body of Christ grows up into Him. When we see a brother or\nsister fail in some way or another, and that failure is not a deliberate act of\nrejecting the Lord Jesus Christ, we are instructed \u2014 no, COMMANDED \u2014 to ask\nFather (within the framework of His covenant with us) to forgive them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s the best part! They are\nforgiven! The sin is remitted, erased, wiped out of existence. They are set\nfree of the penalty and consequences of that sin. They can continue to receive\nrevelation by the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Natural, unregenerate human reaction\nrebels against this. Why should they get away with that? Why should I\nforgive them? They deserve the consequences!<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ve all heard it said that the\n\u201cchurch\u201d is the only army that kills its wounded. That\u2019s not the way it is\nsupposed to be. Here\u2019s how Paul put it when writing to the Galatians:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Galatians 6:1-2<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>1<\/span><\/sup><\/i>Brethren,\nif a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual (<\/span><\/i>pneumatikos<\/span><\/i><\/span>: non-carnal, operating in the dimension of the spirit,\nsupernatural) restore such an one in a spirit of\nmeekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2<\/sup>Bear ye\none another\u2019s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s not forget. The Keys of the\nKingdom are given to those whom the Lord can trust. This is not about us: this\nis about Jesus receiving His inheritance in His people! Religion makes people judgmental.\nWe judge one another \u2014 whether consciously or unconsciously \u2014 and frequently\nmake wrong assessments of one another based on our own personal faults and\nfailings.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Keys of the Kingdom are given to\nthose who first have the revelation of Jesus Christ, His calling in us, His\ninheritance in us, and what are the riches of the Glory of His inheritance.\nNext, the Keys are given so that Jesus Christ can have a body \u2014 a family of\nbelievers \u2014 who are a praise to Him in the earth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Our life, our walk, the way we behave\ntowards one another are all designed to show the world something so spectacular\nthat they can and will say, Praise God!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nour next Coffee Break we\u2019ll continue this look at true forgiveness \u2013 remission\n\u2013 and how both we AND the Lord benefit by our obedience to this command.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
