Greetings, Salutations and Blessings!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

How're you doin<\/span>' this fine day? Best\nday of your life, right? Yup. That's what I thought.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Coffee's on.<\/span><\/b> <\/span>This\nmorning's blend is Double-Roasted French, Columbian and Dark-Roasted Peruvian.\nA bit different from my usual blends but the Peruvian was recommended to me by\nsomeone who thought it would make a good mix. Not bad. Not bad.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I used to think I really understood the Keys of the Kingdom, but\nas revelation from the Holy Spirit has continued to unfold, I've come to\nrealize that most Christians really don't have the foggiest concept of what the\nauthority and power of the Lord Jesus Christ operating in us is really for.\nToday's discussion centers around the difference between forgiveness and\nremission of sin.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

BEING THE BODY OF CHRIST<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Matthew 16:13-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b>\n<\/span>When Jesus came into\nthe coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men\nsay that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the\nBaptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias<\/span>, or one of\nthe prophets. He saith<\/span> unto them, But whom say ye\nthat I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of\nthe living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona<\/span>: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto\nthee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art\nPeter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall\nnot prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of\nheaven<\/u>: and whatsoever thou shalt<\/span> bind on earth\nshall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt<\/span>\nloose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And once again, here<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s the true sense of what Jesus said<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>taken from the Greek text:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cBlessed are you, Simon\nBarjona<\/span>: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto\nyou [this didn\u2019t come out of carnal, human thinking]; this revelation came directly\nto you from My Father which is in Heaven. I declare to you that from this day\nyour onoma<\/span> has been changed. No longer are you Simon\n[the one who hears] who is the son of Jona<\/span>; you are Petros<\/span> \u2013 a piece of the Rock (Petra) \u2013 and it is upon that\nrock (of which you are a part) that I will build my Ekklesia<\/span>\n\u2013 my called out and chosen and prepared body of people; And the gates of\nHell [all the powers and governance of Hell] will not ever overpower or prevail\nin battle against it [my Ekklesia<\/span>]<\/u>.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd\nI will give you the authority and power<\/span><\/u> to\nlock and unlock Heaven so what whatever you bind, restrict or stop on earth\nshall be, having been already bound, restricted or stopped in Heaven. And\nwhatever you break up, loose, dissolve or put off on earth shall be, having\nalready been broken up, loosed, dissolved or put off in Heaven.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Before we get into the\nuse of these keys<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>authority and power<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>let<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s first look at two\nother Scriptures<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>the first being\nsomething that Jesus said, and the second coming from the apostle Paul.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mark 11:24-26<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Therefore I say unto you, What things soever<\/span>\nye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.\nAnd when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought<\/span>\nagainst any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your\ntrespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in\nheaven forgive your trespasses.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

II Corinthians 2:7-11<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort\nhim, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.\nWherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For to this\nend also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be\nobedient in all things. To whom ye forgive any thing<\/span>,\nI forgive also: for if I forgave any thing<\/span>, to whom I\nforgave it, for your sakes forgave I it<\/span> in the person\nof Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of\nhis devices<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

THE AUTHORITY TO FORGIVE IS THE FIRST USE OF THE KEYS!<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

First,\nit is important to note that the exercise of the Key of Forgiveness precedes\nand supersedes even displays of faith. Because it takes<\/span> <\/span>agape<\/span><\/i> <\/span>love in action to remit sin\nand extend the grace of God to those we would normally not consider\n\u201cdeserving,\u201d the use of this Key of the Kingdom \u2014<\/span>\n<\/span>forgiveness \u2014 must\nfirst be used before faith can work.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Miracles\nfollow forgiveness \u2014 not the other way around. Notice how Jesus did it and how\nthe Pharisees with their religious attitudes failed to comprehend the necessity\nof forgiveness.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Luke 5:17-25<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>And whe<\/span><\/i>n he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are\n forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who\n is this which speaketh<\/span> blasphemies? Who can forgive\n sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said\n unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins\n be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the\n Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the\n palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine<\/span> house.<\/span><\/i>\n <\/o:p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Before we get too far along, let\u2019s look at one more statement by\n Paul, and then lets clarify some definitions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Galatians 5:6<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span>For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth<\/span>\nany thing, nor uncircumcision<\/span>; but faith which worketh<\/span> by love.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

One\nof things that create confusion is the seeming inter-changeable use of the\nwords, \u201cforgive, forgiveness, remit and remission.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nword "forgive" \u2014 when it is applied properly in our English texts\nfrom the Greek comes from a word we normally associate with \u201cgrace,\u201d and that\nword is<\/span> <\/span>charis<\/span><\/i><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The\nword,<\/span> <\/span>charis<\/span><\/i><\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>though\nnormally translated \u201cgrace,\u201d actually signifies: favor, graciousness, to be made\nacceptable, the joy of liberality<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\ncounterpart or derivative to this word<\/span>\n<\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>charizomai<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>means: to extend grace and pardon\ntowards someone, particularly one who has done nothing to earn or deserve such\npardon<\/u>. While<\/span> <\/span>charizomai<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>denotes\nthe extension of unmerited forgiveness \u2014 it does not include (at least from its\ntrue sense in Greek) the erasure of accountability and\/or penalty for the\noffending act.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nword, remit and its derivative, remission, are a translation from the Greek,<\/span> <\/span>aphesis<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> <\/span>which in turn comes from the word:<\/span><\/span> <\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The\nword,<\/span> <\/span>aphesis<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> <\/span>means:\nfreedom, total pardon, deliverance<\/u>; whereas<\/span> <\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>denotes\nthe total erasure of something<\/u>.<\/span>\n<\/span>In a more literal\nsense, it means: to send something away, to omit, to leave alone, to act as\nthough it (the offense) never existed<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Both<\/span> <\/span>charizomai<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span>can be translated \u201cto forgive,\u201d but there is a significant\ndifference.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

I\u2019m sure you can and are seeing the difference.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

REMISSION IS UNCONDITIONAL FORGIVENESS AND RELEASE!<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Forgiveness<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>charizomai<\/span><\/i><\/span>) is pardon and grace extended towards one who\nhas sinned or offended without removing the accountability for it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Remission<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>) is both forgiveness and the total erasure of the sin or\noffending event<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span> <\/span>such that both the\noffense and the penalty cease to exist.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Although\nwe almost universally see the word, \u201cforgive\u201d used throughout the Gospels \u2014 and\nespecially in Jesus\u2019 teaching and preaching, in every single instance, the word<\/span> <\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>\n<\/span>(remit) is used.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

When Jesus was speaking to the disciples following the incident\nin which the fig tree dried up from the roots and said to them,<\/span> <\/span>\u201cWhenever you pray and\nask Father for something, believe that you receive and you will have it,\u201d He\nimmediately followed it by saying, \u201cand when you stand praying, remit \u2014 erase\ncompletely \u2014 any offense, if you have some unforgiveness<\/span>\ntowards someone for some wrong committed towards you, so that your Father also\nwhich is in Heaven may remit your sins or lapses in judgment or willful\ntransgressions against Him.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Pretty strong, don<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t you think? How about this one!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Matthew\n6:14-15<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>For\nif ye forgive<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(<\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span><\/i> <\/span>remit) men their trespasses<\/i> (<\/span>paraptoma<\/span><\/i><\/span>: side-slips, accidental or deliberate),\nyour heavenly Father will also forgive<\/i> (<\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>) you: But if ye forgive not men their\ntrespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

And then Jesus says it again!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Matthew\n18:32-35<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Then\nhis lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I\nforgave<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(<\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>) thee all that debt, because thou desiredst<\/span>\nme: Shouldest<\/span> not thou also have had compassion on\nthy fellowservant<\/span>, even as I had pity on thee? And\nhis lord was wroth<\/span>, and delivered him to the\ntormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my\nheavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive<\/i> (<\/span>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>) not every one<\/span>\nhis brother their trespasses.<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Now,\nlet\u2019s return to the incident where the man who has the palsy is lowered through\nthe roof for Jesus to heal him (Luke 5). Jesus\u2019 first statement to the sick man\nis,<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Man, thy sins are\nforgiven<\/span><\/i> <\/span>(<\/span><\/i>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>)<\/span> <\/span>thee.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nPharisees are enraged at this. Their reaction is,<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Who is this which speaketh<\/span>\nblasphemies? Who can forgive<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span>(<\/span><\/i>aphiemi<\/span><\/i><\/span>)<\/span>\n<\/span>sins, but God alone?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

You see, the Pharisees recognized\nthat remission of sin<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span>\n<\/span>the erasure of both the sin and the\npenalty<\/span> <\/span>\u2014<\/span>\n<\/span>had to come from God. Under the Law\nof Moses, they could receive forgiveness, but total remission had to come\noutside the offering of burnt sacrifices. It was beyond the Law.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nwas obviously demonstrating the fact that He WAS God \u2014 that He was equal with\nFather \u2014 and that remission of sin was a natural extension of the<\/span> <\/span>agape<\/span><\/i> <\/span>love of God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

It's a funny thing.<\/span> <\/span>We run into this same kind of\nreligiosity today?<\/span> <\/span>Who\ndo you think you are to think you can forgive someone's sins?<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>Are you seeing it?<\/span> <\/span>And yet this is a natural -- make\nthat "commanded" -- use of the Keys of the Kingdom.<\/span> <\/span>If we are to be obedient to the Word\nof the Lord, we have a solemn responsibility to forgive the sins committed\nagainst us.<\/span> <\/span>And,\nreally it goes beyond just forgiving sins or offenses committed against us.<\/span> <\/span>But we won't go there today.<\/span> <\/span>That's for another discussion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now we begin to see the significance\nof the Keys of the Kingdom!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

THE AUTHORITY TO BIND OR LOOSEN IS DEMONSTRATED IN REMITTING OR\nRETAINING.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Since remission of sin is the heart<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s desire of the Lord and He has the authority to forgive, it\ntherefore became natural for Jesus to say to the disciples,<\/span><\/span>\n<\/span>\u201c<\/span>And I will give you the authority and power<\/span><\/u><\/i> <\/span>to lock and unlock\nHeaven so what whatever you bind, restrict or stop on earth shall be, having\nbeen already bound, restricted or stopped in Heaven. And whatever you break up,\nloose, dissolve or put off on earth shall be, having already been broken up,\nloosed, dissolved or put off in Heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\n<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider,\nnow, what happened when Jesus appeared to the disciples following His\nresurrection. You\u2019ll remember that He had said<\/span>\n<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>I will give you<\/span><\/u><\/i>\n<\/span>the authority and power.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i>That\nauthority and power had not yet been released to them.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

John\n20:21-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Then\nsaid Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so\nsend I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith<\/span> unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever<\/span> sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and\nwhose soever<\/span> sins ye retain, they are retained.<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

When\nwe read this out of our English translations, it almost sounds like, \u201cWhose soever<\/span> sins you forgive and erase, they are erased; and\nwhose soever<\/span> sins you don\u2019t forgive or erase, they\nare not forgiven.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

That\nis NOT what Jesus was saying! That would directly contradict what He had\nalready said otherwise.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

This\nword, \u201cretain,\u201d comes from the Greek,<\/span>\n<\/span>krateo<\/span><\/i><\/span>,<\/span>\n<\/span>and it means: to\nhold fast, to hang onto (with strength)<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nbe clear. When Jesus said, \u201cthose whose sins you remit receive remission,\u201d He\nwas referring to acting and decreeing forgiveness and remission in direct accord\nwith Father\u2019s Word and command \u2014 not simply deciding of your own will and\npurpose to absolve someone of their sin. Jesus never did or said anything He\ndidn\u2019t first see or hear Father say. Neither can we.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

The\nopposite side of this coin goes like this:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhoever refuses and\nrejects the Word of the Lord for forgiveness \u2014 and you both see and hear that\nrejection \u2014 their sins and offenses are retained. They are held fast [because\nthe individual grasped and hung onto his\/her sins without repentance] and the sinner\/offender\nsuffers the consequences of his or her rejection of the offer of forgiveness.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

In case you think that I\u2019m really stretching with this\ninterpretation, take a look at something that Jesus said. Here\u2019s how Jesus put\nit \u2014 and He expressed it within the context and framework of \u201cbinding and\nloosening\u201d and \u201cagreement.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Matthew\n18:15-20<\/span><\/u><\/b>:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>Moreover\nif thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between\nthee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if\nhe will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth\nof two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall\nneglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the\nchurch, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I say\nunto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and\nwhatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto\nyou, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any\nthing<\/span> that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which\nis in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am\nI in the midst of them.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntry and break this down.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

First,\nJesus puts this in the picture of forgiving or remitting of sins. His ultimate\nobjective is for His people to operate in harmony with one another. Thus, if a\nbrother or sister sins against you or causes an offense \u2014 one that could cause\nyou or someone in you<\/span> r family to stumble in their\nwalk with God \u2014 the first command is to go to that brother or sister and share\nwith them the nature of the offense in such a way as to bring understanding and\npeace between you.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

If\nthat person fails to hear you because of some bitterness or anger or resentment\nheld within them, then you take one or two other brothers or sisters in the\nLord with you and try once again to resolve things.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

There\nis a spiritual principle here \u2014 and it is one which applies in a legal sense\ntoday. Our judicial system has adopted this Kingdom Law; and that is that every\nword \u2014 every testimony, either for or against \u2014 is established when it is heard\nout of the mouths of two or more witnesses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n\n

You\u2019ll\nrecall the picture of Revelation 12:11 where we are told that the overcomer<\/span> wins with two witnesses: the Word of his\ntestimony<\/u>, and the testimony of Jesus\u2019 Blood<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Finally,\nif reconciliation fails even before two or more witnesses, you bring the\noffending brother or sister before the whole body of believers and \u2014 in a\nnon-judgmental or non-accusatory way \u2014 make every final effort to bring peace\nand reconciliation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
