ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 26<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

January 27,\n2017\n <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Good Morning, all you\nearly birds!\u00a0 <\/span>Most of you know, I think,\nthat these Coffee Breaks come out in the wee hours of the morning, and some\nfolks even write me asking if I\u2019m up at 2:30 in the morning sending them\nout.\u00a0 <\/span>Nope.\u00a0 <\/span>Rich Hoffman is our webmaster and he gets\nthem published very late Thursday night or very early Friday morning.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Before we get into\ntoday\u2019s discussion, I have to share something with you.\u00a0 <\/span>Many of you already know that Della and I\nhave inherited our four youngest grandchildren because of a serious crisis with\ntheir parents.\u00a0 <\/span>Being parents again to\nchildren, aged 4 to 8, is an adventure all by itself.\u00a0 <\/span>What it means is that we have counseling,\ncomforting, encouragement and spiritual building up in the lives of these young\nones.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Jasmine, our\neight-year-old, has been through her own traumas, apart from the other\nthree.\u00a0 <\/span>A couple nights ago, I was\npraying with her before she went to sleep.\u00a0\n<\/span>Part of my prayer over her was that she would receive a visitation from\nthe Lord Jesus Christ during the night.\u00a0\n<\/span>The next morning, she came bounding out of bed, excitedly saying to me,\n\u201cGrandpa, Jesus came and sat down with me last night.\u00a0 <\/span>He and I got to sing together.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The next morning was\nalmost a repeat of the day before.\u00a0 <\/span>As\nshe was getting dressed, I heard her singing, \u201cI love Jesus, and He loves\nme.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Then I heard her singing another\ntune that was completely new, so I asked her where she learned it.\u00a0 <\/span>This time Jasmine said, \u201cGrandpa, Jesus came\nand sat down on my bed last night, and we sang together again.\u201d I asked her if\nthe song she was singing was one that Jesus taught her and she nodded her head,\n\u201cYes!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Have to say that when\nDella and I hear these kinds of reports from the grandchildren, it gets really\nexciting, heart-warming, and encouraging to see the responses and know that we\nare making headway.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Last\nweek, we tried to wrap up our discussion on being led in the Paths of\nRighteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s so much more that\nwe could cover, but I do want to move on today with the next phase of this\nadventure in Psalm 23.\u00a0 <\/span>That brings us\nto, <\/span>Yea,\u00a0 <\/span>though I walk through\nthe Valley of the Shadow of Death<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s\ndo a quick re-cap of all that has transpired up to this point.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Our\nadventure began with a decree, a declaration of our total commitment to the\nLord Jesus Christ when we stated unequivocally, <\/span>\u201cThe Lord is\nmy Shepherd!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>It began a walk for\nus in life that spelled radical change from the past.\u00a0 <\/span>This was the beginning of a transition from\ndarkness and ignorance of the spiritual realm to light, to a revelation of a\ndimension the world does not know.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Next\ncame the decree with a promise and confident expectation when we said, <\/span>\u201cI\nshall not want!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was a prophetic declaration over our lives\nthat we would never again live a life of want, of need, of continual \u201cgetting\u201d\nof \u201cthings\u201d because of an ingrained spirit of The Fear of Death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

That\nfollowed the compelling of Holy Spirit to eat of the Word when we experienced\nthe discipline of <\/span>\u201cHe maketh<\/span> me to lie down in green\npastures.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>This is that time\nof laying and establishing the foundations of the written Word, as well as\ncoming to know and understand that Jesus IS that Word \u2013 that He is more than\nwords and letters on paper.\u00a0 <\/span>What we eat\nof, and carefully digest, are the principles and purposes of Jesus Christ being\nboth Shepherd and Lord of our lives.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Both\nthe Azusa Street Revival at the turn of the 20th<\/sup> Century and the\nCharismatic Renewal which unfolded some 60 years later were introductions to\nthe entire body of Christ to the very next adventure, where David writes, <\/span>\u201cHe\nleadeth<\/span> me beside the still waters.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The difference between this step and the\nprevious is quite obvious.\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of\n\u201cHe maketh<\/span> me,\u201d now it has become, \u201cHe leadeth<\/span> me.\u201d \u00a0<\/span>It has\nbeen often said that Holy Spirit is a gentleman.\u00a0 <\/span>He does not force people into doing something\nagainst their will.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nthis instance, the leading \u2013 rather than compelling \u2013 is because we are about\nto enter a dimension that our flesh may well rebel against.\u00a0 <\/span>This is that realm where we submit our flesh\nand our will to Holy Spirit and allow Him to begin to flow through us.\u00a0 <\/span>This is evidenced in the fact that we allow\nHim to take control of our tongues in order to speak under His aegis and use\nour tongues to speak with the languages of both men and angels.\u00a0 <\/span>James makes it clear in his letter to the\nbody of Christ that <\/span>\u201cthe tongue is a little member and boasteth<\/span>\ngreat things.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Hence the need to\nsubmit it to Holy Spirit for His control so that we can speak according to the\nwill of God the Father.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Having\nsubmitted our entire beings to this realm of the Spirit, we are now ready for\nthe fifth step in this amazing adventure, and one \u2013 again \u2013 to which our flesh\nwill want to rebel.\u00a0 <\/span>Here is where\nspiritual surgery begins in our lives so that healing and restoration to the\nimage we were first created in can begin.\u00a0\n<\/span>Hence, <\/span>\u201cHe restoreth<\/span> my soul.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That restoration is critical and must take\nplace if we are going to meet all of the challenges and events that will occur\nas we walk with the Lord, following Him in the Paths of Righteousness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nPaths of Righteousness are going to take us into \u2013 and through! \u2013 the Valley of\nthe Shadow of Death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll\nrecall that one of the areas of deliverance, healing and restoration is being\nset free of all fear.\u00a0 <\/span>As we have\ndiscussed, there are three families of fear: The Fear of Evil, the Fear of Man\nand the Fear of Death.\u00a0 <\/span>It is important\nto have our freedom from these areas where the Enemy has tormented us put to\nthe test.\u00a0 <\/span>Holy Spirit does not put us to\nthe test so that we can fail but rather so we can see what He has accomplished\nin us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Consider\nsomething that Matthew writes concerning Jesus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew 4:13-16<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And\nleaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast,\nin the borders of Zabulon<\/span> and Nephthalim<\/span>:\nThat it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias<\/span>\nthe prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon<\/span>, and the\nland of Nephthalim<\/span>, by<\/i> the way of the sea,\nbeyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; \u00a0<\/span><\/sup>The people which sat in darkness saw\ngreat light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is\nsprung up.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

We\ncan add to this with what Paul writes to the Hebrews:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Hebrews 2:14-15<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Forasmuch\nthen as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise\ntook part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the\npower of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death\nwere all their lifetime subject to bondage.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\nFear of Death and the Fear of Evil are frequently working hand in hand with\neach other to bring destruction to people \u2013 and perhaps the most vulnerable are\nthose who are seeking after the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>The need to be free from these wicked spirits\nis paramount in our walk in the Paths of Righteousness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Because\na major part of the restoration process involves being set free from these\nspirits, it is important for us to see and experience the victory that Christ\nhas given us.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, the Paths of\nRighteousness MUST lead is into and through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

First\nof all, lets understand this \u201cvalley.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span>There are several words or derivatives of the root word in Hebrew for\n\u201cvalley.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>In this instance, Holy Spirit\nhas chosen a derivative word which would be all too familiar to David\u2019s\nexperiences, and properly describes it as \u201cthe Valley of the Shadow of\nDeath.\u00a0 <\/span>To the south and west of the city\nof Jerusalem runs a deep and narrow valley that is more \u201cgorge\u201d in our\nunderstanding than \u201cvalley.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>We see it\noccasionally referred to throughout Scripture as \u201cthe Valley of Hinnom<\/span>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

What\nmakes this valley so distinct from other valleys is the fact that it was narrow\nwith high walls on either side, making side egress from the valley difficult,\nif not impossible.\u00a0 <\/span>It was a place to\nwhich the Jebusite<\/span> inhabitants of what was called at\nthe time, \u201cthe City of Jebus<\/span>,\u201d or \u201cJebusi<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

For\nthose of you who\u2019ve read the rather lengthy Coffee Break series I did ten or\neleven years ago titled, Seven Nations, Seven Letters, you\u2019ll remember that the\ncity of Jerusalem did not get its proper name until David, as King of Israel,\noverthrew the Jebusite<\/span> king who ruled there.\u00a0 <\/span>The name, Jebus<\/span>,\nwas a name given to the father of the Jebusites<\/span> by\nhis children because of his military tactic of \u201ccrushing.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Not only did he have crushing military\nvictories over his opponents, he physically crushed their skulls and\nbodies.\u00a0 <\/span>He was born as a son of Canaan,\noriginally named, Jerus<\/span> (which meant: foundations),\nbut his sons thought Jebus<\/span> to be more fitting, and he\nwas known thereafter and throughout time as \u201cJebus<\/span>,\u201d\nwith all of his descendants referred to as \u201cJebusites<\/span>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve\nshared all that to say that this particular valley became the sight of human\nsacrifice: hence, the \u201cValley of the Shadow of Death.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Anyone entering the valley experienced the\nlong shadows and the dread and foreboding it gave of death because of the way\nit was used.\u00a0 <\/span>An uncountable number of\npeople were put to death in that valley and burned as human sacrifices to Baal\nand Astarte (or Ashteroth<\/span>.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Now!\u00a0 <\/span>Put that concept into the picture when you\nthink the phrase, <\/span>\u201cYea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Takes on a whole new dimension, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 <\/span>David emphasizes, however, the fact that we\nwalk through<\/i><\/b>\nthat valley.\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t stop there, and we\ndon\u2019t remain there!\u00a0 <\/span>We do come out the\nother end of the valley.\u00a0 <\/span>Some very\nimportant foundations are established in our lives in the process, and we will\nget to those in the next few weeks.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

David\ngives us another perspective of the Valley of the Shadow of Death in Psalm 107,\nand what he writes here bears directly on what we will \u2013 and MUST \u2013 learn along\nthe way.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 107:8-14<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Oh\nthat men<\/i> would praise the LORD for<\/i> his goodness, and for<\/i>\nhis wonderful works to the children of men!\u00a0\n<\/span>For he satisfieth<\/span> the longing soul, and filleth<\/span> the hungry soul with goodness.\u00a0 <\/span>Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of\ndeath, being<\/i> bound in affliction and iron;\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Let\u2019s pause in this narrative for a minute\nand consider exactly what is taking place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

As Matthew\nprophesied of Jesus, He brought light into the darkness and shadows where death\nexisted.\u00a0 <\/span>David sees prophetically into\nthat day and makes it clear that those who are sitting in that darkness and in\nthe valley of the shadow of death need to praise the Lord and rejoice in their\ndeliverance.\u00a0 <\/span>David knew from experience\nthat even in the midst of the crises and places of affliction that the answer\nwas praise!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The 34th<\/sup>\nPsalm was a song sung, along with rejoicing and dancing, when he was in danger\nof death from the Philistine king, Abimelech<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>The shadow of death hung around him.\u00a0 <\/span>Part of his song goes, <\/span>\u201cI\nsought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Thus, he could write in the 107th<\/sup>\nPsalm, <\/span>\u201cFor He satisfieth<\/span> the longing soul,\nand filleth<\/span> the hungry soul with goodness.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That satisfaction came because of the light\nof the presence of the Lord in the midst of what for all practical purposes for\nhim was the valley of the shadow of death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, he describes a\ncondition that causes folks to be in the shadow of death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Because\nthey rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most\nHigh:\u00a0 <\/span>Therefore he brought down their\nheart with labour<\/span>; they fell down, and there was<\/i>\nnone to help.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Rebellion against\nthat which the Lord was saying<\/i><\/b> to them is what started their\npredicament.\u00a0 <\/span>David adds that they\nscorned and ridiculed the counsel of the Lord.\u00a0\n<\/span>Thus He permitted them to suffer the consequences of their rebellion and\nscorn.\u00a0 <\/span>The Hebrew phraseology in this\nstatement indicates that the consequences of their disobedience included worry,\ngrief, and hard labors (trying to escape the results of their scorning of God\u2019s\ncounsel) resulting in wavering, tottering and ultimate failure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When folks find\nthemselves in that condition after their rebellion, stubbornness, disobedience\nto the Word and counsel of the Lord, and they awaken spiritually to realize the\nwhy and where of their predicament, there is a cry that erupts from their\nbeing.\u00a0 <\/span>In this instance, the Hebrew\nphraseology describes a corporate cry where folks who are all in that state of\nsuffering cry out together asking God for His salvation. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Then\nthey cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and<\/i> he saved them out of\ntheir distresses.\u00a0 <\/span>He brought them out of\ndarkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The\ndeliverance of the Lord to those who\u2019ve rebelled against Him and His counsel when\nthey cry out for help is nothing less than astounding.\u00a0 <\/span>David says that God delivered them, set them\nfree, brought light and life to their circumstances and broke the emotional,\nmental (and even physical) chains that held them captive.\u00a0 <\/span>That same light illuminated what had been the\nshadow of death, bringing revelation in its place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In\nthe 136th<\/sup> Psalm, David\u2019s song begins, <\/span>\u201cO give thanks\nunto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth<\/span>\nforever.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>NO KIDDING!!!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve\nonly laid foundations today for understanding the significance of the Valley of\nthe Shadow of Death and why the Paths of Righteousness lead us into that\nplace.\u00a0 <\/span>Next week, we will expand on\nthis. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
