WASHINGTON\n\u2013 Wisconsin\u2019s 1st District Congressman Paul Ryan unveiled his bold,\ncomprehensive proposal to transform the Federal government. At today\u2019s news\nconference, Ryan delivered the following remarks:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/span>\u201cToday I\u2019m introducing comprehensive\nlegislative to address what I believe is the greatest threat to our nation\u2019s\nlong-term prosperity: the looming entitlement crisis.
\n
\nMy plan is called A Roadmap for America\u2019s Future<\/i>, and I\u2019d like to\nexplain what it does, and why I\u2019m doing it.
\n
\nRight now, America has a choice between two futures. In one \u2013 the fiscal path\nwe\u2019re on now \u2013 we continue trying to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world\nwith outdated programs that are growing themselves right into extinction. This\nwill lead us down a fiscal path on which Americans\u2019 health and retirement\nsecurity programs collapse; we condemn future generations to a crushing burden\nof debt and taxes; and our economy is crippled and unable to compete with the\nrest of the world.
\n
\nIn fact, by the time my three kids are my age, they will have to pay twice the\ntaxes we pay today \u2013 just to keep the government afloat. This will occur with\nno new programs, no new spending \u2013 double the taxes just to maintain the status\nquo.
\n
\nAnd yet we do nothing about it. Year after year, we keep kicking the can down\nthe road. Both<\/i> parties share in the blame for this inaction.\nWe don\u2019t want to deal with this problem \u2013 or even talk about it \u2013 because it\u2019s\nan election year, and it\u2019s just too controversial to deal with such things. But\nit\u2019s an election year every other year. If we continue to wait for the \u201cright\ntime\u201d to reform \u2013 the politically \u201csafe\u201d time<\/i> \u2013 we will never\nsolve this problem.
\n
\nWell, I didn\u2019t come to Washington just to be<\/i> a Congressman. I\ncame here to do something. The people of Wisconsin sent me here to solve\nproblems, not ignore them. 
\n
\nAnd when I see a government that makes promises it can\u2019t possibly keep; a\nfuture where my kids will be worse off than I am; and an American economy that\nwill struggle to compete \u2013 let alone lead \u2013 in an international economy \u2013 I see\nthe need for a plan that sets a different course.
\n
\nThis is the future we face if we do nothing. I believe we can \u2013 and must \u2013 set\na different course. If we begin to act immediately<\/i> \u2013 there\nremains the opportunity for a dramatically better American future. But the time\nfor talk has passed. We need a plan. <\/i>

\nSo over the past few years, <\/span>I<\/span>ve<\/span><\/span> solicited input from many\npeople from experts in DC to working people in Wisconsin. <\/span>

\nFrom those discussions, I\u2019ve developed this plan to transform the Federal\ngovernment \u2013 to fix healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, our tax system, and\nour growing debt and to put it on a different path, a path illustrated by the\nsecond line on this chart.

\nMy legislation, called \u2013 A Roadmap for America\u2019s Future<\/i> \u2013 will\nkeep the size of government at a sustainable level and achieve the following\nthree objectives:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
