Let\u2019s see if we can wrap up this part\nof the adventures in <\/span><\/b>Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I had hired two men who were\nprofessed "brothers in the Lord" to run North Slope Communications\nfor me, and take care of the actual RF equipment installations.  In the\nspring of 1981, I received a phone call from the local electric utility company\nindicating that they were going to contract with us for the installation and\nmaintenance of a new two-way radio system.  It was a rather large contract,\nand the caller indicated that they had a $140,000 deposit on this contract\nready to give us that afternoon.  I called "Bob" and asked him\nto pick up the check for me.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

He left as instructed, and I didn't\nthink too much about it when he didn't return that afternoon.  It was\nclose to quitting time, and I expected that he would bring the check into the\noffice the following morning.  He didn't show for work the next day, and I\ncouldn't raise "Dan" (his co-worker in the company) on the\nphone.  That concerned me, so I called Dave Dobbs.  Dave was my\nassociate pastor at <\/span>Inupiat<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Christian<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Center<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>, and he was\nalso working as a dispatcher for the local police department.  Dave sent\nan officer out to check on both of them and discovered that they had grabbed a\nflight out of Barrow immediately after picking up the check.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As it turned out, while the police\nofficer was checking up on them, they were in <\/span>Anchorage<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> opening a\nbusiness account in the name of my business with themselves as the\nsigners.  They successed in\u00a0 <\/span>forging\nmy name on the check and deposited it in that account; and then absconded with\nthe funds.  There's a lot more to this picture, but I won't take the time\nto fill in all of the details -- not today, anyway.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The repeated thefts from the Arctic\nSlope Audio retail store coupled with this theft left me facing financial ruin,\nand I was compelled to file for bankruptcy protection.  My once\nplatinum-plated credit rating was shot to pieces.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nbegins the 91st Psalm like this: <\/span>He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most\nHigh shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the\nLord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in Him will I trust.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nkey phrase that opens the 91st Psalm is <\/span>I will say of the Lord<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/b>  Get\nit?  It is the confession that comes out of our mouths during the time of\nthe "noisome pestilence," the time of the "fowler" when\ndeliberate traps are set for your destruction or your hurt.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nfourth verse says, <\/span>He shall\ncover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth\nshall be thy shield and buckler.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Again,\nit is "His truth" which must be our defense, our shield of protection\nduring these times.  I've shared this many times before, and I'll say it\nagain.  Things are not what they seem to be; they're what God says they\nare.  The facts may declare one thing, but often times those facts are at\nodds with what God's Word clearly says.  One cannot dwell on\n"facts."  Your meditation, your daily cogitation must be on what\nGod's Word says in the midst of these so-called "facts."  That\nis what MUST be your daily confession.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

For\nme -- in the midst of the non-stop series of attacks against my well-being, my\nfamily's well-being, our finances, our vision, our credibility, the ongoing ministries\n-- I could not afford to dwell on what was going wrong.  Had I done so, it\nwould have put me in an institution as a babbling idiot.  My mind had to\nbe stayed on the Lord, on His Word, on His promises to me, and on the\ncommission He had given.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nhad launched an assault on the kingdoms of darkness.  We were out to take\nback and reclaim territory stolen by Satan.  The ministry of <\/span>CBN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> and the 700\nClub was growing.  Lives were being transformed by the Gospel of Jesus\nChrist.  People were being delivered from evil spirits.  Folks were\nreceiving prophetic words from Pat Robertson and Ben Kinchlow on the 700 Club\n-- words that had been given sometimes weeks earlier and recorded on video tape\n-- which met them precisely where they were at that given moment in time they\nheard the words.  When they heard and received those prophetic words,\nhealings took place, evil spirits departed, miracles of outstanding proportion\nfollowed in the lives of people scattered throughout remote Alaskan communities\nand villages.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Beyond\nthat, we were impacting the community of Barrow.  People were being saved,\nhealed, delivered and set free from lifetime bondages.  The sufferings we\nwere enduring were of little consequence compared to the revealing of the Glory\nof the Lord in the lives of all these people.  But Satan was out to stop\nus, and he was literally throwing his entire arsenal at us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I've\nalready told you of the attacks that began once "Johnny" believed the\nlie that he couldn't be being afflicted by evil spirits -- never mind his\nbackground and upbringing as the heir-apparent shaman in Barrow.  I've\ntold you of the beatings two of my children suffered; how our oldest daughter,\nDebbie was shot at; how unidentified individuals made two specific attempts to\ntake me out by assassination; how threats against my life took place on an\nalmost-daily basis for months; how the contractor who had come to Barrow to\nbuild our new church had his life threatened, along with his employees, at\nrifle-point; how our businesses were robbed six times; how two employees of my\ncommunications business fled with $140,000, and how the thefts and robberies\nultimately forced me into bankruptcy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

All\nof the aforementioned events took place over the period from early 1980 through\nthe summer of 1981.  And we were a long way from coming out the other end\nof the valley of the shadow of death.  Although my oldest daughter, Debbie\n(who is an adopted Eskimo) chose to stay in Barrow to finish high school, I\nsent Chris and Melodie out of Barrow to be with my parents at <\/span>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place>, and to keep\nthem away from the fracas until the dust had settled.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

During\nthe last few years as I've shared these Coffee Breaks, you've heard me talk\nabout the wonderful things we've seen God perform.  You've heard me talk\nabout the miracles, the blessings that have unfolded, the provision of God in\nthe face of the impossible, the stupendous and marvelous deliverances from evil\nspirits, the transformation of lives -- up to and including an entire community\nbeing won.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

What\nI have not talked a lot about is the opposition, the persecution, the failures,\nthe battles, along with the betrayal of erstwhile friends and\n"brethren."  Why?  Because they pale in comparison. \nThey are not the focus of my life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Jesus\nput it like this, <\/span>These things\nI have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall\nhave tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/b>  (John\n16:33)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sometimes,\nthe opposition, the persecution and afflictions just seem to go with the\nterritory.  But they are not what life is all about.  One does not\nbecome an "overcomer" unless one has things to overcome.  One\ndoes not become a victor in battle unless there is first a battle, and there is\nan opponent who is determined to do you in, whom you defeat.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Writing\nhis second letter to the Ekklesia in <\/span>Corinth<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City>, Paul says, <\/span>Are they ministers of\nChrist? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes\nabove measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.  Of the Jews five\ntimes received I forty stripes save one.  Thrice was I beaten with rods,\nonce was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been\nin the deep;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\njourneyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine\nown countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in\nthe wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In\nweariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in\nfastings often, in cold and nakedness.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Beside\nthose things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all\nthe churches.  Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn\nnot?  If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine\ninfirmities.<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>(See II Corinthians 11:23-30)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Are\nyou getting the picture?  <\/span>If it is necessary for me to express glory -- that manifestation of the\nblessing of the Lord, then I will express the glory of the Lord that has come\nin the midst of my own weaknesses -- in the times of my own failings, those\ntimes when everything seemingly went wrong or against me -- when God showed up\non the scene!<\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/b>(II Corinthians 11:30, <\/span>RAC<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> Translation\n& Amplification)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Shortly\nafter having to file for bankruptcy, a lady was appointed by the bankruptcy\njudge as a "master" to come to Barrow and try to get a handle on our\nassets.  This woman had a personal hatred of Christianity and Christians\nin general, and when she discovered that our businesses were being used to fund\nthe growth of <\/span>CBN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker>'s ministry\nthroughout Alaska, she decided -- on her own -- that Inupiat Christian Center\nand its assets could and should be seized as assets of the businesses, never\nmind the fact that each of these were separately incorporated entities. \nHer excuse was that since I was the President of ICC -- an <\/span>Alaska<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:State> non-profit\ncorporation -- <\/span>AND<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> the\nPresident of Alpha-Omega Industries, Inc. (the holding company for Arctic Slope\nAudio and North Slope Communications), that alone was prima facie evidence that\nI was co-mingling assets.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

She\nproceeded to show up at the door of our home with two police officers one\nevening with a search warrant to go through our home looking for assets of <\/span>Inupiat<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Christian<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Center<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>.  They\nliterally ransacked the house, taking not just personal electronic equipment,\nbut bedding, clothing and personal tape recordings and records -- more\naccurately, whatever they laid eyes on that they wanted personally.  For a\nwhile, I thought I was living in a Communist country.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\ncontacted an attorney-friend in <\/span>Fairbanks<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> who went to\ncourt to get an injunction against the illegal seizure of church assets and\npersonal effects that -- under any interpretation of law -- were exempt from\nseizure, and an order for the immediate return of those items.  It took\nalmost a month before an injunction and an order were forthcoming. \nEverything that had been seized somehow mysteriously disappeared.  Months\nlater, I learned that our personal sound equipment and the church's equipment\nwas in the homes of the police officers that had accompanied the\n"master."  Reclaiming them was an impossibility since there was\nno prosecutor or judge who would listen to the evidence.  I was left with\nonly one recourse: give it to the Lord and trust Him to be my vindication.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nPsalm 50:16-23, David writes, <\/span>But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my\nstatutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?  Seeing\nthou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.  When thou\nsawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with\nadulterers.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thou givest\nthy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.  Thou sittest and\nspeakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother\u2019s son.<\/span> \nThese things\nhast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such\nan one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine\neyes.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nconsider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none\nto deliver.  Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth\nhis conversation aright will I show the salvation of God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nPsalm is a rebuke to those who think they can get away with slander and\nthievery; and the promise to the believer is that, to those who order their\nconversation aright -- those who continue to confess the promises of God in the\nmidst of the slander and thievery -- they will see God's salvation and\nintervention.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

I\nhad felt prompted some months earlier by the Holy Spirit to begin a transition\nof our main operations for <\/span>CBN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker>-Alaska, Inc.\nfrom Barrow to <\/span>Fairbanks<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City>. \nAlthough I had been somewhat slow to respond to this prompting, some of our\nequipment and supplies had been transferred, and new operations in <\/span>Fairbanks<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> begun -- and\nas it turned out, this equipment was just about all that survived the raids and\nthe thievery.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

One\nlone police officer who had been a part of our church fellowship (other than\nDave Dobbs, my associate pastor, who was not an active officer but rather a\npolice-dispatcher) took it upon himself to negotiate for, and\/or reacquire some\nof the lost equipment on his own.  He saw the shenanigans of his\nfellow-officers, and while he wouldn't take up arms against them (figuratively\nspeaking, of course), he considered it his duty to rectify as much of the\nwrong-doing as he could.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Accusations\nagainst me began to surface within the community.  The thought process\nseemed to go like this: Where there's smoke, there must be fire.  If\nall these things are happening to this guy, he must really be on the outs with\nGod: therefore, he must be guilty of some kind of hidden sins.<\/o:p><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nthing I knew, a phone call came from the Naval Commander at the Arctic Research\nLaboratories.  He advised me that one of the native corporations had filed\nsuit against him for "illegally" donating the surplussed building\nmaterials to <\/span>Inupiat<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Christian<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName> <\/span>Center<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place> and crossing\nthe so-called "church-state" boundaries under the U.S.\nConstitution.  I was pretty sure I knew where the suit had originated, and\nby whom, but told the Commander that I understood his dilemma and if he wanted\nto withdraw the offer to avoid the lawsuit, he was welcome to do so.  He\nimmediately thanked me and advised me that all materials still on site at the\nlaboratories would be disposed of at public auction instead.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Within\ndays I received another phone call.  This time the call was from the <\/span>UIC<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> -- the\nnative corporation which had granted us the land upon which to build the new\nchurch.  The phone call was simply a notification that the board of\ndirectors had rescinded the grant, and that the native corporation was taking\npossession once again of the land.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nthreatening phone calls from muffled voices had not ceased during this time,\nand now they took on a more personal aspect.  One phone call in particular\ncame from an "elder" in another church.  "We know that God\ndidn't call you, and He didn't send you to Barrow.  You are under a curse\nbecause you left the church of your father; and you'd better get out of town\nwhile you still can."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wow! \nThat caller didn't bother to disguise his voice, and I easily recognized who it\nwas.  I laughed at him and said, "Friend, you have nothing to do with\nmy call from the Lord, and you will have nothing to say about any decision on\nmy part to leave Barrow."<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Added\nto all of the pressure, the accusations, the slander, the thievery and the\nbetrayal by folks I had considered as fellow-laborers in the Gospel, we were\nnow advised that the lease on the house we were living in (we had vacated\n"Johnny's" house some months before) was being canceled and the place\nsold.  When you see the sequence of events the way they unfolded, it isn't\nhard to develop a conspiracy theory, but I wasn't going there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah\nhad prophesied, <\/span>Say ye not,\nA confederacy (conspiracy), to all them to whom this people shall say, A\nconfederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.  Sanctify the LORD\nof hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. \nAnd he shall be for a sanctuary...<\/span> <\/span>(Isaiah 8:12-14)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

If\nthere was a conspiracy, it was one in the realm of the spirit, and the\nconspirators were evil spirits operating in and through willing people who had\nbeen sucked in by demonic lies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\nweren't done with the valley of the shadow of death yet, but there was\ndeveloping in me a very clear sense of <\/span>\u201cI will fear no evil."<\/span>  <\/span>Beyond that,\nthe sense of the presence of the Lord and David\u2019s declaration, <\/span>\u201cFor\nthou art with me,\u201d<\/span> <\/span>were more real than I could possibly express.  It took no\nimagination whatever to know that the Lord had been Protector, Shield, and Rock\nof Defense in the midst of all of it.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
