ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: HYSTERIA OR HOLY SPIRIT?<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Wow!  With all of the events of\nthe past two weeks, I haven't been able to sit down long enough to write. \nWe've been moving our daughter, Rebekah<\/span>, from <\/span><\/b>Pasco<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:City>, and helping our daughter-in-law, Chelsi<\/span>\n-- along with three of her children -- make preparations for travel to south <\/span><\/b>Texas<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:State> and <\/span><\/b>Mexico<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> on a missions venture.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

We need to get back to our discussions on miracles -- and\nthey just keep happening and happening and happening -- but I wanted to do at\nleast one, and maybe two more articles that deal with the unbelief exhibited in\nso many quarters of the Body of Christ concerning the outpouring in Lakeland,\nFlorida and now so many other places simultaneously.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

One of my dear sisters in the Lord expressed the concern\nover what she perceived as "hysteria" associated with these events\nand movements, and wondered if that's all this was.  <\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Folks, I know there are many genuine, committed Christians\nwho are struggling with these kinds of events taking place because they are so\n"out of the box" and don't fit with any of the decorum (really,\nalmost funereal attitudes in some churches!) and "order" we've all\nbeen programmed to expect.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Let's get to the Word first of all.  Oh, and while\nyou're getting your Bible out, don't forget that cup of good, strong,\ndark-roasted, oily, French Roasted Columbian coffee!  Hehehehehehe<\/span>..........<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Take a look at an event recorded in the 4th chapter of\nActs.  Peter and John had been called on the carpet by the religious\nleaders of the day for healing a crippled man.  Worse, they did it when\nthey were supposed to be in prayer (at the ninth hour -- <\/span>3:00 PM<\/span><\/st1:time> --) with everyone else!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

We pick up the narrative at verse 23: <\/span>"And being let go, they went to their own company, and\nreported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.  And\nwhen they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and\nsaid, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and\nall that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why\ndid the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things<\/u>?  The kings\nof the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord,\nand against his Christ.  For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom\nthou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the\npeople of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy\ncounsel determined before to be done.  And now, Lord, behold their threatenings<\/span>: and grant unto thy servants, that with all\nboldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine<\/span>\nhand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy\nchild Jesus.  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they\nwere assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they\nspake<\/span> the word of God with boldness."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

It is important to see these events in context.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

First, the religious leaders of the day were standing in\ncondemnation and opposition to the miraculous.  Their reasons for\ncondemnation and opposition are no different than those of today: were they to\naccept that what was happening was the power of God, it would be to their own\ncondemnation and guilt for having so watered down God's Word and cheapened its\nvalue, its power and authority.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Secondly, Peter and John, and the believers who were\ngathered with them, began to pray all the more forcefully that God would\ndemonstrate His Word through signs and wonders.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

They'd hardly finished their prayer when the Scripture\ntells us that <\/span>"the place was shaken where they\nwere assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they\nspake<\/span> the Word of God with boldness."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

This is an interesting phrase in the Greek text.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

It reads a bit differently than our English translations\nand comes out like this: <\/span>"And having\nprayed, they were shaken in the place where they were assembled, and they were\nall filled with the Holy Spirit."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

That word, shaken<\/i>, in the Greek text is: <\/span>saleuo<\/span><\/i><\/span>, and it\nmeans agitated, rocked, toppled over, disturbed, incited, moved, shaken\nviolently<\/u>.  I don't know of a better word to describe precisely what\nwe are seeing at <\/span>Lakeland<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> and other places.  Agitated?  Toppled over? \nShaken violently?  <\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Sound familiar?  You say you've never seen "slain\nin the Spirit" in the Scripture?  Yep.  You have, but it just\nwasn't obvious in our English translations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

What's more, the word <\/span>saleuo<\/span><\/i><\/span> comes from <\/span>salos<\/span><\/i><\/span>, which means to\nvibrate, to be tossed like the swells of the ocean.  J. H. Thayer, in his\nGreek-English Lexicon, adds the following description: "to cause to\ntotter, to suffer instability as if produced by winds, storms, waves, etc.<\/u>"<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Folks, I don't know of a better way to describe what\nhappens when a person is hit by the power of the Holy Spirit.  All of the\nmanifestations we've seen at <\/span>Lakeland<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> I've\npersonally seen and experienced throughout the course of some 50 years of\npublic ministry.  Although I've no recollection of personally being\nknocked down, I've certainly seen it happen thousands of times to others; and\nI've been hit by what seemed to be jolts of electricity that shook every\ncorpuscle and molecule of my body during times when I was either being\nministered to, or ministering healing or deliverance to others.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Hysteria?  Guess that's what a lot of folks would\nhave thought if they'd seen Peter and John and everyone gathered together with\nthem when everyone was shaking in the place.  They were reeling and\nrocking!  But wait.  Isn't this just a repeat of what happened on the\nDay of Pentecost?  Take a look at Acts 2.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they\nwere all with one accord in one place.  And suddenly there came a sound\nfrom heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they\nwere sitting.  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of\nfire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the\nHoly Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them\nutterance.  And there were dwelling at <\/span><\/i><\/b>Jerusalem<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:City> Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.  Now\nwhen this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded,\nbecause that every man heard them speak in his own language.  And they\nwere all amazed and marvelled<\/span>, saying one to another,\nBehold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans<\/span>? \nAnd how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?  Parthians<\/span>, and Medes, and Elamites<\/span>,\nand the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea<\/span>, and Cappadocia<\/span>, in Pontus, and Asia,  Phrygia, and Pamphylia<\/span>, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene<\/span>, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes<\/span> and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues\nthe wonderful works of God.  And they were all amazed, and were in doubt,\nsaying one to another, What meaneth<\/span> this?  Others\nmocking said, These men are full of new wine."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Get the picture?  Noise, confusion, tumult,\ncacophony, folks talking in languages they've never heard or learned before, tornadic<\/span> winds and sounds, fire: in other words, nothing\nyou'd associate with "normal" in today's vernacular.  The world\nlooked on and said, "Hey, these guys are drunk!  This is the stupid\nbehavior of someone who's been drinking new wine, and that wine has addled\ntheir brains!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Yessir<\/span><\/span>!!  But to listen to some of today's unbelievers, what's\nhappening today is unbiblical!  Tell you what.  The only folks who\nare calling the outpouring of the Holy Spirit "unbiblical" are people\nwho've never been filled with the Holy Spirit or been personally hit by that\npower.  Hate to be so blunt about it, but that's a fact!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Consider.  What's one of the first manifestations of\nbeing filled with the Holy Spirit?  Know what it is? \nLove.  <\/span>Agape<\/span><\/i> love.  <\/span>Agape<\/span><\/i> love isn't critical.  It doesn't attack and\naccuse.  It doesn't call people names who are strange or different from\nthe church "societal norm".  It doesn't call them "wolves\nin sheep's clothing."  It doesn't call them "false\nprophets."  It doesn't think evil of folks who operate in a different\nparadigm whose message is still the message of Jesus Christ, the Gospel of the\nKingdom to the poor; and whose ministries exhibit Kingdom proofs in the form of\nhealing, deliverance from evil spirits and restoration to wholeness in Jesus\nChrist.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Love -- <\/span>agape<\/span><\/i> love -- is tolerant of differences.  It isn't easily\nprovoked.  It doesn't focus on people's personalities or character\noddities to the exclusion of Kingdom proofs.  Brother!  If I had a\nnickel for every time someone had called me a "false prophet" or a\n"heretic" or that I was on some kind of "power trip," it'd\ntake you a long time to count the money.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Really, folks!  Why are some so quick to refer to\nTodd Bentley's piercings<\/span>, his tattoos, or his\ntrademark, "Bam" with such hostility and hatred?  Would I do\nthings like he does?  Not on your life!  By the same token, one could\ncall Benny Hinn<\/span> really "strange" because of\nhis mannerisms.  He dresses odd, too!  (Hehehehehe<\/span>.......) \nHe's just on the opposite side of "odd" to Todd Bentley.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

But I don't measure people or results by the way a person\nlooks, acts or talks.  I measure him or her by the growth of the <\/span>Kingdom<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType> of <\/span>God<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place> that\ncomes through changed lives, redeemed and transformed individuals who are in\nlove with the Lord Jesus Christ.  I measure the individual who is\nministering by the love and grace of Jesus Christ that is exhibited. \nStrange doesn't count.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Some folks laugh and ridicule those who smack, hit or kick\nsomeone as they minister healing.  But they forget that Jesus essentially\nspit in someone's eyes.  OK.  He spit on dirt and rubbed it in a\nblind man's eyes.  And there's a difference between that "weird"\nact and punching someone?  What was the result of Jesus' act?  The\nman was healed.  He could see perfectly.  But talk to a doctor or\nmedical professional about the very idea of rubbing dirt in someone's eyes and\nthey'd be horror-stricken!  That's not God!  He wouldn't do\nsomething like that!<\/i><\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

It's time for God's people to wake up and stop looking at\npeople and personalities and realize that the reason God is choosing these odd\nducks is because "normal" Christians won't respond to the quickening\nof the Holy Spirit.  "Normal" Christianity is the Christianity\nthat exhibits the power and authority of Jesus Christ.  "Normal"\nChristianity is the grace and love that heals, that transforms and restores\nbroken lives, that raises the dead to life, that cleanses infected people from\nphysical, financial and spiritual leprosy, and casts out demons in the name,\nthe <\/span>onoma<\/span><\/i><\/span>, the authority and power of the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Anything we call "Christianity" that doesn't do\nthose things is not "normal."  It is a sick, religious\ncounterfeit thereof.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Are you among those who are critical of what is taking\nplace in <\/span>Lakeland<\/span><\/st1:City>, <\/span>Florida<\/span><\/st1:State><\/st1:place>?  Are you among those who are critical of the Azusa Street\nOutpouring that began in 1906 and lasted for three and a half years? \n(There were well-known newspaper columnists and reporters who called that\n"hysteria.")  Are you among those who are critical of the Latter\nRain movement of the 1940's and 1950's?  Are you among those who are\ncritical of folks like Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, A. A. Allen, William\nBranham, Kenneth Hagin<\/span>, Sr. and others whose\nministries have literally changed the face of the world we live in?<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Better wake up, my friends.  You are standing on the\nwrong side of what Jesus is doing, saying and promising to those who believe.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

This isn't hysteria.  This is the Holy Spirit. \nAnd He's grown tired of waiting for sub-normal, wanna<\/span>-be\nChristians who have the name but lack the power and authority to show the love\nof Jesus Christ to transform the world around them.  The Holy Spirit is\nchoosing and using people who are willing to be odd, who are willing to do the\nunexpected, who are willing to be made fools of -- <\/span>AND<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> WHO <\/span>ARE<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> OBEDIENT to His\nvoice, no matter what it costs!  They may even be folks who have some\ndoctrinal oddities that we can't square with the Word.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

You are going to see the strange, the unusual, the\nso-called "unbiblical" things that take place in the midst of\noutpourings of the Holy Spirit.  This doesn't mean that everything that\nhappens is ordered of the Holy Spirit.  It doesn't mean that every\nmanifestation is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit.  You're going to see\nsome flesh on display.  You'll see screwball things like folks with animal\nbehavior: barking, growling, howling, roaring.  That's not God!  But\nthat doesn't take away from the reality of what the Holy Spirit is doing. \nWhen the power of the Holy Spirit downloads on folks who've lived their lives\nby fleshly thinking and behavior, you're going to get some of this.  It\ncomes with the package.  But what ultimately results is a life that is\nradically changed and empowered by God.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

What ultimately happens is that these screwy behaviors\nfall away as a person is being renewed, transformed, and conformed to the image\nof the Lord Jesus Christ.  What we have to remember in the meantime is\nthat just because these things are happening doesn't mean we're in the midst of\nhysteria or some false move of God.  Every move of God recorded during the\npast five hundred plus years has had these kinds of displays at first. \nBut these kinds of displays have fallen by the wayside as lives undergo real\nchange by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in operation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Stop trying to clean up the acts of people and being\ncritical of what's happening, and start allowing the Holy Spirit to do what\nHe's been sent to do.  Restoration is not an instantaneous act; it takes\ntime and processing in a person's life.  That's the business of the Holy\nSpirit of whom Jesus said, <\/span>"Howbeit\nwhen he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Got the picture?  "Guiding" is a process --\nnot an instantaneous zap!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Next: Angelology.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Healing is the gift of God.  It is part of the\nBlessing of Abraham restored by the Lord Jesus Christ to and for all who\nbelieve.  Do not for a minute think that sickness or infirmity is a\nblessing from the Lord.  It is a curse from Satan.  Jesus came to\nredeem us from that curse!<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

The Blessing of the Lord: it makes rich and He adds no\npainful toil and sorrow!<\/span><\/i><\/b>  <\/span>(Proverbs\n10:22)  Be blessed!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n
