Greetings & Salutations!<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Got that first cup of good, dark-roasted Columbian Supremo<\/span> poured, yet?<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

We will continue today with the discussion we began in our\nlast Coffee Break, but before we do, let's do a little housekeeping, first.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Most of you are aware that changes are taking place to the\n<\/span>MSN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> boards where tens of thousands of readers view these and other\nposts.  <\/span>MSN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> was supposed to provide us with a look at their new Windows\nLive boards by November 17, but that is currently delayed until\nmid-December.  I've been studying the Multiply, Yuku<\/span>\nand Webs formats and will have a decision soon as to where we will move the <\/span>MSN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> group, RegnersRangers<\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Meanwhile, many of the boards I've been involved in for\nthe past five or six years have moved and are active on Multiply<\/span>;\nand if you visit http:\/\/capener.multiply.com<\/a>,\nthis will take you to my personal site.  Multiply has afforded me the\nopportunity to provide samples you can listen to of the\nvarious spontaneous praise<\/span> and worship CD's we have recorded and\npublished during the last few years.  These CD's are available for\npurchase (and if you'll permit me a small commercial moment) they can make some\nwonderful Christmas gifts for friends and family.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

There!  That's the first time in all these years of\nposting that I've done any advertising.  It's not something I'm given to\ndoing much of, but these spontaneous worship gatherings captured in digital\nrecordings provide a completely different worship environment than you will\nfind in traditional settings.  I recommend them -- not because Della and I\nare involved, but because of the presence of the Lord.  Listen to some of\nthe samples.  You'll quickly get the idea.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Finally, before we get started today, I will be taking a\nhiatus from the Coffee Breaks beginning in mid-December and resuming toward the\nend of the first week of January, during which time we will make every effort\nto complete the transition of the Coffee Break archives over to www.AnotherCoffeeBreak.com<\/a>,\nand completely phase out our <\/span>MSN<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> involvement.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

My thanks and appreciation to the\nloyal readership of these Coffee Breaks.<\/span><\/span> \nJanuary 2009 begins the fifth year of publication of <\/span>ANOTHER\nCOFFEE BREAK<\/span><\/i><\/b>.  The growth of readership has\ngone through spurts and spasms, and depending on who you talk to (and who is\ndoing the checking) we have something on the order of 500,000 (my figure) to 2\nmillion or 3 million readers around the world in just about every major\nnation.  That's a blessing to me and, I trust, to those of you who have\ncontinued to subscribe.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Now then, let's get on with today's discussion.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Yesterday morning, around <\/span>3:00 AM<\/span><\/st1:time>, the Lord\nawakened me with the statement He made to the prophet Ezekiel (see Ezekiel <\/span>22:30<\/span><\/st1:time>)<\/span>: "I\nsought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the\ngap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it:....<\/span>"<\/span><\/i><\/b> and He stopped there.  Then He said to me, "It\nonly takes <\/span><\/span>ONE<\/span><\/st1:stockticker>!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

As I meditated on what He was saying, He reminded me of\nhow He picked Noah because of his faith and right standing before God to\npreserve the human race.  Then I saw Him choose Abraham out of all the\npeople on earth to become the father of a nation and a people who would walk by\nfaith.  I saw how Joseph was chosen to preserve his family, and the future\nof the nation of <\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Again, I saw Moses leading Israel out of Egypt; I saw\ntheir rebellion against God and the stirring of His anger against them and expressed\ndesire to destroy the nation and start all over again with Moses.  I saw\nhow Moses pleaded with God and how his intercession spared the whole nation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Move forward in <\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>'s history and you have Daniel interceding for <\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> in captivity and God showing him their return.  How about\nEsther's three days of fasting, prayer and intercession?  It changed the\ncourse of history for the Jewish people and prevented their destruction.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

You're beginning to get the picture, I'm sure. \nHistory is filled with examples of how just one individual put everything on\nthe line with God, and how their pursuit of His righteousness and mercy altered\nthe course of history.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Let's take it to more modern times.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Consider <\/span>America<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>'s beginnings.  We've talked much about our nation's\nfounding fathers and how they sought to instill a reverence of the Lord God in\nevery part of our nation's early beginnings.  But what about the\nEvangelists, the Prophets, the prayer warriors who interceded on behalf of this\nnation in those early days?  What about their sacrifices, their\ncommitments not only to pray, but to speak out and to take the Gospel of the\nLord Jesus Christ into the very halls of governance of those first thirteen\ncolonies, and then to those who formed our nation's Constitution and established\na bulwark of liberty for God's people in the world?<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

In the early days of this nation we had a man by the name\nof Jonathan Edwards.  He, along with George Whitefield, were<\/span>\nboth intercessors and preachers who were largely responsible for what we know\nas The Great Awakening.  Jonathan Edwards made the following observation\nof prayer and intercession, and it marked the life of a man whose influence\nupon our nation's founding fathers was nearly immeasurable.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

"I feel an ardency of soul to\nbe . . . emptied and annihilated, to lie in the dust and be full of Christ\nalone, to love Him with a holy and pure love, to trust in Him, to live on Him,\nand to be perfectly sanctified<\/i> and made pure with a divine and\nheavenly purity."<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

That, my friends, is the mark of the intercessor -- one\nwho has emptied themselves and focused on what the heart's desire of the Lord\nJesus Christ is, and then implements that desire in prayer with commands,\ndecrees, and declarations which rip apart the strongholds of Satan and prepare the\nway for the Gospel to be heard and received.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Edwards had the soul and the spirit of an\nintercessor.  He often wept over his congregation as he preached. \nHis preaching, combined with his weeping and groaning intercession\nwhile he preached<\/i><\/b>, created what some observers referred to as "a\nspiritual hurricane" resulting in people falling down prostrate under\nconviction, others being "slain in the spirit" (to use the\nPentecostal expression), and still others hanging onto their chairs or columns\nalong the sides and center of the auditorium to keep from falling.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

His oft-companion in ministry, George Whitefield, was\neasily the most widely traveled preacher in the world until modern times. \nHe crossed the Atlantic 13 times preaching throughout <\/span>America<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, <\/span>England<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and <\/span>Europe<\/span><\/st1:place>.  His voyages were marked by his staying in corners of the\nship for hours and days at a time in prayer and intercession, and then followed\nby his preaching to (and converting) many of his fellow-travelers or\nship-mates.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

John Newton (who wrote Amazing Grace) said of Whitefield,\n"It seemed as if he never<\/b> preached in vain." \nGeorge Whitefield -- as I have noted in the Coffee Break series, <\/span>THE\nAMERICAN COVENANT<\/span><\/i><\/b> -- was followed continually by\nBenjamin Franklin.  <\/span>Franklin<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City>, as we all know, was famous for his various experiments and\nscientific mind.  During one of Whitefield's sermons, he walked away to a\nspot where he could not hear him too clearly, marked that spot, and began\nmeasuring the area that encompassed the listeners.  He concluded by his\nexperiment that not less than 30,000 people could hear George Whitefield\nclearly and easily without amplification -- so great was the power and\nanointing under which he preached.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

But these are only anecdotes of intercessors.  Let's\nget to the picture of intercession, and what is accomplished in the midst of\nit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

We come back to a verse we've quoted several times from\nPsalm 115:16 where David writes, <\/span>"The heaven,\neven the heavens, are the LORD\u2019S: but the earth hath he given to the children\nof men."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

This is an extremely important principle to\nremember.  Genesis 1 and 2 tell us that following creation of the earth\nand all that is therein, he formed man, breathed His life into him, then gave\nman dominion over everything upon the earth, and put him into the Garden of Eden\nto <\/span>"dress it"<\/span><\/i><\/b> (the Hebrew word is <\/span>'abad<\/span><\/span><\/i>:<\/span> meaning to\nwork it, care for it, and have dominion over it<\/u>) and <\/span>"keep it"<\/span><\/i><\/b> (the Hebrew word here is <\/span>shamar<\/span><\/i><\/span>:<\/span> meaningto<\/u><\/span>\nguard, protect and hedge about, being circumspect of all therein<\/u>).<\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Adam surrendered day-to-day control of the earth to Satan\nby virtue of his eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and\nbringing a curse upon the earth, but God still held Adam (and his seed)\nresponsible.  When Jesus came, both as the seed of Adam and the son of God\n(by virtue of the Holy Spirit), he -- through His suffering, death,\ncancellation of the curse and restoration of access to and fellowship with God,\nand resurrection from the dead -- restored total dominion <\/span>AND<\/span><\/b><\/st1:stockticker> <\/span><\/b>DAY<\/span><\/b><\/st1:stockticker>-TO-<\/span><\/b>DAY<\/span><\/b><\/st1:stockticker> CONTROL<\/span><\/b> -- to those of the human race who would receive Him,\nacknowledge His Lordship, and function through His authority and power!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Wheww<\/span><\/span>!  Sorry about that long sentence, but you get the picture.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Jesus, now seated at the right hand of God the Father, now\nfunctions as our intercessor.  (See Isaiah 53:12, 59:16, Romans 8:34,\nHebrews 7:25)  But there's more!<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

In Romans 8:26, the apostle Paul writes,<\/span> "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth<\/span>\nour infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the\nSpirit itself maketh<\/span> intercession for us with groanings<\/span> which cannot be uttered."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

We can also read this last phrase in the Greek text like\nthis:  <\/span>"But\nthe Spirit Himself (the better rendering) makes intercession on our behalf, across\nand through us, for our benefit, with sighs and internal groanings<\/span>\nwhich are unspeakable."<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

So what does all this have to do with the picture of the\nearth belonging to the Lord, but the earth being in the hands of the children\nof men?  Just this: God does not retract what He gives.  He doesn't\nchange His mind and take back the earth.  Sure He's the Creator, and He\nhas a plan and purpose for the earth. Because He has given the earth into man's\ncharge, He has made it so that for His Will to be enacted in the earth, He must\ncome through us.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

That's not because He isn't Supreme, it's because this is\na legal requirement He has created<\/b> in order to get man\ninvolved in the affairs that take place on earth.  He simply will not act\nwithout at least <\/span>ONE<\/span><\/st1:stockticker> man interceding and petitioning Him to act in the affairs of\nmen.  Hence, the Word the Lord spoke to me in the early morning hours was,\n"It only takes <\/span>ONE<\/span><\/st1:stockticker>!"<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

When Jesus commanded us to decree, <\/span>"Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done in earth as it is in\nHeaven," <\/span><\/i><\/b>He was expecting our direct\ninvolvement in the process of ruling over the earth.  After all, that's\nwhat God's people were designed for in the first place!  As already noted,\nruling over the earth was man's first command -- with blessing.  The curse\ntook that away.  Jesus restored it to those who would live and operate\nthrough Him.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but these\nprinciples are critical to understand for the intercessor.  God spoke to\nEzekiel telling him that He longed for and looked for someone to stand in the\ngap so that He would not have to execute judgment upon the nation.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

The apostle Paul, in I Timothy 2:1-5, writes, <\/span>"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, <\/span><\/i><\/b>1<\/span><\/sup>supplications,<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>2<\/span><\/sup>prayers,<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>3<\/span><\/sup>intercessions, and <\/span><\/i><\/b>4<\/span><\/sup>giving of thanks, be made for all men;\nFor kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and\npeaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and\nacceptable in the sight of God our Saviour<\/span>; Who<\/span> will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the\nknowledge of the truth.  For there is one God, and one mediator between\nGod and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who<\/span> gave himself a\nransom for all, to be testified in due time."<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Supplications, Prayers,  Intercessions, Giving of\nthanks: these are four specific things Paul commands with purpose -- <\/span>1<\/span><\/sup>that we may lead a quiet and\npeaceable life in all Godliness and honesty, and <\/span>2<\/span><\/sup>so that the heart's desire of the\nLord can be fulfilled in seeing all men to be saved and come to the knowledge\nof the Truth.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

Let me do a quick outline and define these four specific\nthings from the Greek text.  Then we'll stop for the day and come back to\nthis discussion later in the week.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

1<\/span><\/b>. Paul's first command is supplications<\/u>. \nThe word in the Greek text is: <\/span>de.esis<\/span><\/i><\/span>; and it\nmeans: petitions<\/u>, requests<\/u>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

2.<\/span><\/b> The second is prayers<\/u>.\nThis is a distinctive word -- <\/span>proseuchomai<\/span><\/i><\/span> -- and it\nis a covenant word.  It literally means: to worship<\/u> [within\nthe framework of God's Covenant with us, and our participation in that\nCovenant].  (We'll talk about this picture more in our next Coffee Break.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

3.<\/span><\/b> The third is intercessions<\/u>. \nThis word frequently -- if not most of the time -- gets treated in our mental\npictures as crying, long prayers, begging God, banging on Heaven's gates, and\ntrying to convince God to do something He really doesn't want to do. \nNothing could be further from the truth!  The term in the Greek text\nis: <\/span>enteuxis<\/span><\/i><\/span>; and this is a legal term, frequently used within the old Greek\njustice system.  <\/span>Enteuxis<\/span><\/i><\/span> is defined like this: to confer with<\/u>, to\nentreat for<\/u>, to<\/u><\/span> deal with<\/u>. \nIt is the presenting of a legal document with arguments based in Covenant Law\nin order to have enforcement of the Covenant.  (We'll get into this a lot\nmore, later.)<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

4.<\/span><\/b> The last thing Paul commands is\nthe giving of thanks<\/u>.  Once again we have a word used within\nthe framework of Covenant.  That word is: <\/span>eucharistia<\/span><\/i><\/span>. \n(Traditional churches derive the "Eucharist" -- or partaking of the\nsymbols of Communion -- from this word.)  <\/span>Eucharistia<\/span><\/i><\/span> expresses\nconcept of gratefulness or gratitude towards God, but it does so within the\ncontext of our Covenant of the Blessing of Abraham which God made, and Jesus\nenacted for all who receive Him and walk in His Covenant.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

The entire picture of these four words Paul uses comes within\nthe enactment of the Covenant of Blood which Jesus made and restored access to\nthrough His suffering, the merciless beatings and stripes He bore for our\nhealing and wholeness, His death on the Cross, and -- most of all -- His\nresurrection from the dead.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

In our next Coffee Break, we'll review the picture of\nCovenant, how it was originally enacted with Abraham, and why intercession is\nso integral to our Covenant with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

The purpose of Covenant is to place God's mark in your\nforehead, that is, to mark your mind.  That Covenant is as valid today as\nit was in the Garden.<\/span><\/i><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n

The Blessing of the Lord: it makes rich and He adds no\npainful toil and sorrow!<\/span><\/i><\/b>  <\/span>(Proverbs\n10:22)  Be blessed!<\/span> <\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n
