At least that'll be an improvement over\njust one.<br>\n<br>\n<\/span><\/b><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>It was about six or seven -- maybe\neight -- weeks ago that a mother and daughter came into <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:PlaceType\n w:st=\"on\">River<\/st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceName w:st=\"on\">Worship<\/st1:PlaceName>\n <st1:PlaceType w:st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> during the day\nrequesting assistance.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>The<\/span> mother spoke very\nbroken English, and it was a struggle for me to understand what she was asking.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Finally her daughter stretched out her hands for me to\nsee.&nbsp; I understood what the lady was saying when I saw the daughter's\nhands.&nbsp; They were deformed, and had been since birth.&nbsp; Fingers were\ncrooked and misshapen.&nbsp; There were odd-looking growths on her hands and\nfingers such that she could not close her hand.&nbsp; My first thought was that\nshe had some kind of warts, but a closer look made it clear that these growths\nwere a whole lot more than your garden-variety warts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Apparently, they'd found a doctor who was willing to\nperform a series of operations on the girl's hands (she was around 11 or 12\nyears old, by the way) to straighten the crooked fingers, remove some of the\ngrowths and at least bring her to the place where she would be able to use her\nhands.&nbsp; These operations were going to cost many thousands of dollars, and\nthe lady was seeking financial assistance.&nbsp; Since she was not an American\ncitizen, she was not entitled to medical assistance through Medicare or Medicaid,\nand the family obviously lacked any kind of insurance to pay for such a series\nof operations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When I realized what they were trying to do, and what the\nmother was trying to raise in terms of finances to help her daughter, I couldn't\nhelp but laugh.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>Even<\/span> if the doctor gave away the\nmajority of his services as an act of mercy, this lady was still looking at a\ncost of tens of thousands of dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The first thing that popped into my head was the situation\nPeter and John encountered at the gate Beautiful<span class=GramE>&nbsp; (<\/span>See\nActs Chapter 3) with the man who had been lame from birth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When the man asked for financial assistance\n(&quot;alms&quot;), verse 6 tells us,<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"'> <\/span><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#006600'>&quot;Then\nPeter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have <span class=GramE>give<\/span>\nI thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of <st1:City w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Nazareth<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>\nrise up and walk.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The lame man was healed, and folks who had known him his\nentire life saw him completely whole.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>My response to the lady and her daughter was pretty close\nto Peter's.&nbsp; &quot;Ma'am, I'm sorry, but we just don't have that kind of\nmoney to help you.&nbsp; What I do have, however, is the authority and power\navailable through the name of Jesus; and with your permission, I will pray for\nyour daughter.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The mother nodded her head, and I stretched out both of my\nhands, palms facing <span class=SpellE>up.\u00c2<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; I<\/span>\nsaid to the young girl, &quot;Put your hands in mine.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The girl quickly responded, placing her palms face down on\n<span class=SpellE>mine.\u00c2<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; I<\/span> grasped her\nhands and said, &quot;Father, in the name of Jesus, your Word says that by Jesus'\nstripes we have been healed.&nbsp; I declare that healing now for this young\nlady and command these hands to be whole.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The power of God hit both mother and daughter and they\nbegan to shake.&nbsp; I wasn't sure if they were going to fall down or not but\nthey stayed standing, both weeping buckets of tears.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>Although<\/span>\nwe didn't see the instantaneous miracle at that moment, it was clear the Lord\nhad done something.&nbsp; Mother and daughter both left the church still\nweeping.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>This past Friday, I was in the office for a short time and\nthe young girl returned by <span class=GramE>herself<\/span>.&nbsp; I heard the noise\nof her entrance behind me and got out of my chair to see who was in the church.&nbsp;\nAs I stood to my feet, the girl walked into my office, both hands outstretched.&nbsp;\nShe wanted me to see what the Lord had done.&nbsp; She had a smile that\nstretched from ear to ear.&nbsp; Her hands were perfect.&nbsp; There were no\nmarks anywhere, no growths of any kind.&nbsp; The fingers were straight, and\nher hands were long and graceful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>&quot;I just came to say, Thank You,&quot; the girl said.&nbsp;\nI asked her what her name was and she responded, &quot;Delia.&quot;&nbsp; It is\nthe Hispanic form of Della's name.&nbsp; The Lord had healed the girl\ncompletely.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>It<\/span> made me wish I'd taken\n&quot;before and after&quot; pictures.&nbsp; It's been awhile since I've seen\nthat kind of creative and restorative miracle, but this one really blessed my\nsocks off!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Delia's return to express her thanks to the Lord for her\nhealing is reminiscent of the event recorded in Luke 17 where ten lepers came\nto Jesus asking for healing.&nbsp; He spoke the Word to them, and as they went\nthey received their healing.&nbsp; Only one of them returned to Jesus, however,\nto give thanks for healing.&nbsp; Jesus responded to this man (see verse 19),<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#006600'>&quot;Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee\nwhole.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It isn't often that people return to give thanks for their\nhealing, their deliverance, their provision or whatever the Lord has given.&nbsp;\nThis young lady will not only have received the healing of her hands, but her\nfaith in the Lord will result in her being completely whole from this day\nforth.&nbsp; What a blessing!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Well, let's see if we can wrap up this abbreviated story\nof my parents' missionary adventures.&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>If'n<\/span> <span\nclass=SpellE>ya<\/span> haven't already, pour yourself a cup of coffee and pull\nup a chair.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was in the <span class=GramE>Spring<\/span> of 1984 that\nDella and I decided to take our parents to Hawaii on a vacation.&nbsp; Dad had\nexpressed a lifelong desire to visit Hawaii.&nbsp; Neither Dad nor Mom had ever\nreally taken a &quot;vacation&quot; vacation where they didn't have to raise\nfunds, share the vision of ministry, or preach in some church.&nbsp; Della's\nfolks had never been in Hawaii either, and we thought this would be a good\nopportunity for the two sets of parents to get together and just enjoy some\nrelaxation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Della's stepfather (her natural father had died some years\nbefore) decided he wasn't really into sight-seeing and decided to pass on the\ntrip so we took our oldest son, Chris, <span class=SpellE>instead.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; My<\/span> mother and Della's mom had a blast in the International\nMarketplace in Honolulu.&nbsp; The ten days we spent became one of the most\nmemorable for the entire family -- in more ways than one!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div> \n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1-2 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=Section1>\n\n<p><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:\"Arial\",\"sans-serif\"'>L to R:\nChris, Della's Mom (Opal <span class=SpellE>Hendershot<\/span>, Della, Me, Mom\nand Dad (Lorraine &amp; Alvin <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad and Chris were frolicking in the water at Waikiki one\nafternoon.&nbsp; Della and I were sitting back on the beach just watching them.&nbsp;\n<span class=GramE>The<\/span> Holy Spirit spoke to me in that quiet moment and\nsaid, &quot;Your father has two years to live.&nbsp; He has cancer, but it will\nnot be diagnosed until six months before he dies; and the doctors will tell him\nthat he has about six months to live.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>That was astonishing to me.&nbsp; On the one hand, Dad\n(who was 68 at the time) had repeatedly confessed that he would live to be 70\nyears of age -- a confession that always bothered me, especially in view of our\nfamily's general history of longevity.&nbsp; On the other hand, I wanted to\nstand up and shout, &quot;No, No, No!&nbsp; This just can't be, Lord!&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>What I did do was to lean over and share with Della what\nI'd just heard in my spirit.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>We<\/span> talked about it\nand concluded that we were simply being prepared by the Holy Spirit so that we\ncould deal with the situation and be prepared to minister to the family members\nas the day approached.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Meanwhile, in the midst of the ongoing lawsuit by our two\naforementioned vengeful men using <span class=SpellE>Tanadgusix<\/span>\nCorporation as their vehicle of convenience to pursue their hate agenda, Dad\nreceived the surprise of his life.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>The<\/span> Saint\nPaul Island City Council and the elders of the community got together to\ndeclare a day of honor for him and present him with a plaque which commemorated\nhis many years of faithful service to the islanders.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The plaque was engraved in part with the words, &quot;To\nAlvin <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span>, a True Elder of Saint Paul.&quot;&nbsp;\nIt signified the fact that he had won the hearts of the people and earned a\nlevel of trust given to a very few people on the island.&nbsp; It stood in\nstark contrast to the legal battle that was raging behind the scenes, but for\nboth Dad and Mom, it meant that their ministry and their representation of the\nGospel of Jesus Christ had paid dividends in the lives of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Della put her position with <span class=SpellE>Zales<\/span>\nJewelers on hold for a time, and I utilized an opportunity presented by the\nCity of Saint Paul to move to the island to take over as General Manager of\nKUHB on an interim basis and train some local people to run the station.&nbsp;\nThe reality was that we knew Dad's time was growing short.&nbsp; He was\nbeginning to experience the first signs of the cancer -- although he had no\nidea that was what he was fighting.&nbsp; Our being on the island gave us the\nopportunity to relieve him with the church, help Mom with the motorcycle and\nthree-wheeler rentals and begin to prepare for Mom's eventual taking of the\nchurch leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In the late fall of 1985, Dad made a trip to Oral Roberts\nCity of Hope Medical Center after an Anchorage doctor suggested he may have\nsome kind of tumor.&nbsp; The medical team's prognosis for Dad was that he had\ninoperable cancer.&nbsp; They gave him not more than six months to live.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Della and I returned to Anchorage to prepare so that Dad\ncould spend his last months with us.&nbsp; Mom remained at Saint Paul for a\nshort time until the Assemblies of God District Superintendent was able to\nprovide some temporary replacements so she could join us in Anchorage.&nbsp;\nDad was able to spend most of his last six months in our home.&nbsp; During one\nof his hospital stays in the interim (he was receiving regular blood\ntransfusions), my younger brother, Howard, flew in from Denver with his <span\nclass=SpellE>fiance<\/span>, and Dad performed their wedding from his hospital\nbed.&nbsp; The wedding was televised by the local CBS television station after\nI notified one of their reporters -- a longtime friend of ours.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Despite his physical weakness, Dad continued to preach and\nteach -- even in the hospital -- up until just a few weeks before his death,\neven leading one of the nurses that tended him to the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Ralph Miller had been an Alaskan missionary for a number\nof years, having ministered in North Pole (a Fairbanks suburb), and a close\nfriend of the folks.&nbsp; He was now part of the Assemblies' District\nleadership, and he was a regular visitor of Dad's both in our home and in the\nhospital.&nbsp; Dad's imminent departure and address change affected him <span\nclass=SpellE>deeply.\u00c2<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; (<\/span>That's all going\nto Heaven really amounts to, don't you think?&nbsp; It's nothing more than an\naddress change!)<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\"Garamond\",\"serif\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When Dad departed to be with the Lord on the evening of\nGood Friday, <st1:date Year=\"1986\" Day=\"26\" Month=\"3\" ls=\"trans\" w:st=\"on\">March\n 26, 1986<\/st1:date>, and we had his funeral the following week (we provided a\nweek's notice of the funeral in order to allow friends, family members, and\nfolks from all over the world who had advised us they wanted notification),\nRalph penned the following piece as a tribute.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:\"Brush Script MT\";mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:blue'>He is my friend, This apostle of the <span class=SpellE>North.\u00c2<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp;
