<span class=GramE>I've<\/span> got a couple more photos\nto share, and these bear directly on the events I'd like to cover today.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Both of the photos are a bit grainy, but taken from the <\/span><st1:date\nls=\"trans\" Month=\"12\" Day=\"12\" Year=\"1982\"><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>December 12,\n 1982<\/span><\/st1:date><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> edition of the Anchorage Daily News'\nnewsmagazine,<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#192763'>We <span class=SpellE>Alaskans<span style='color:#663300;\nfont-weight:normal;font-style:normal'>.\u00c2<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>&nbsp; Both of the photos were compliments of Barbara <span\nclass=SpellE>Krizman<\/span>, who did the Anchorage Daily News article.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I'm sure I've already mentioned it, but because of the\nrather unusual -- and at times spectacular -- nature of the accomplishments\npeople saw Dad and Mom perform as a direct result of their ministry, the news\nmedia often covered them.&nbsp; Dad's Ham radio work and efforts to provide\ncommunications for the Saint Paul Island residents during the period prior to\nany kind of telephone service with the outside world got him written up in Ham\nradio and communications magazines on at least two or more occasions.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad's rather innovative method of building a wall within a\nwall to prevent frost transfer in extreme cold became the subject of builders\nand contractors all over the country.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>Mom's<\/span>\nefforts to bring non-native plant life to Saint Paul Island, and her successes\nin creating a gorgeous flower garden around the church gained attention\nliterally around the world among gardening experts and florists.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Newspaper articles and magazine stories had been (and were\ncontinuing to be) written about <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Alvin<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> and\nLorraine <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span>, and both <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Anchorage<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>\nnewspapers (the Times and the Daily News) had done pieces on their ministry\nthroughout the years.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>In<\/span> the years to come\n(that's for another Coffee Break) the Daily News would pick up a story on Mom,\nthe outcome of which would or could impact thousands of Alaskans and have legal\nramifications for Alaska's future.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I've already noted that <\/span><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> was home to more than 200 species of birds.&nbsp; The island\nwas a kind of heaven for birdwatchers, ornithologists and wild life\nphotographers who didn't mind paying the round-trip airfare from <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Anchorage<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> of\naround $1100.&nbsp; (At the time, we could fly round trip from <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Anchorage<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> to <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>London<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> for less\nthan half that amount.)&nbsp; That meant that a pretty large percentage of the\ntourist traffic on the island was a fairly well-heeled bunch financially.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Although the home Dad had built certainly couldn't be\ncalled &quot;luxurious,&quot; it was far and away the nicest home on the island\n-- and easily the most comfortable.&nbsp; On one of our trips to the island,\nDella and I had helped Dad and Mom remodel the interior (the exterior was\nnothing to write home about), and replace some of the older furnishings with\nsome pretty nice stuff.&nbsp; Mom had gone to great lengths to decorate various\nrooms, and each room had its own theme.&nbsp; Dad had become an extremely\nskilled cabinetmaker throughout the years of building churches, and his\nhandiwork was on display in virtually every room.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>He had taken a couple of Philippine mahogany doors,\nseparated them with sections of bamboo that had drifted up on the beaches and\ncreated a rather large and book-accommodating coffee table.&nbsp; <span\nclass=GramE>To<\/span> match it, he had taken a wine keg from an old ship which\nhad broken apart on a rocky reef at one end of the island, cut it in half and\nwrapped each half with bamboo strips, using the ends of the keg on bamboo\nstandoffs to make two matching end tables.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I've said all that to say that the house became a draw to\ntourists all by itself.&nbsp; The <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span> home, with\na couple of spare bedrooms, was -- more often than not -- a bed and breakfast\nfor tourists, some of whom were dignitaries from foreign governments,\nhistorians, famous authors including the likes of James Michener (he was\nworking on his novel,<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#192763'>ALASKA<\/span><\/i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>, at the time), world-renowned\nphotographers, television media and entertainment moguls, scientists, and even\nfolks like explorer and oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.&nbsp; (Della and I happened\nto be at Saint Paul Island when Cousteau sailed his famous ship, Calypso, into\nSaint Paul's harbor.)<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Year after year after year after year, the famous and the\nunknown, the powerful and the &quot;commoner,&quot; the great and the\nnot-so-great made their visits and pilgrimages to <\/span><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>.&nbsp; The growing fleet of motorcycles, mini-bikes, three- and\nfour-wheelers became <i>THE<\/i> mode of transportation for all these people.&nbsp;\nDad and Mom built a highly-profitable business out of renting these off-road\nvehicles despite the fact that they charged a pittance in rental fees.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I talked to Dad about his rental rates one day, and his\nanswer was, &quot;Son, I'm not trying to get rich off these people.&nbsp; I\njust want to cover my costs, and use these bikes as a vehicle (pun intended) to\nshare the Gospel.&quot;&nbsp; And share he did.&nbsp; It is highly doubtful\nthat Dad or Mom ever kept any record of the number of visitors to the island\nwho came to know Jesus Christ.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>From the article of the same name published\nin the Anchorage Daily News on <\/span><st1:date ls=\"trans\" Month=\"12\" Day=\"12\"\nYear=\"1982\"><span style='font-size:10.0pt'>December 12, 1982<\/span><\/st1:date><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt'>.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The visitors, the tourists and the dignitaries who visited\nthe island were not their primary objective, however.&nbsp; The Holy Spirit had\nmade it clear that the spiritual atmosphere of the island was that of a\ncesspool, a garbage disposal to be more exact, and that <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Alvin<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> and\nLorraine <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span> were there to sow the seeds of\nchange.&nbsp; The half-dozen young boys on mini-bikes in the above photo (also\ntaken by Barbara <span class=SpellE>Krizman<\/span>) were among those who\nreceived almost daily ministry.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Mom had developed a practice of sharing Scripture verses.&nbsp;\nShe had purchased several &quot;Precious Promise&quot; boxes containing Scripture\nverses on tiny little cards.&nbsp; When someone would come in to rent a bike --\nespecially if it were one of the young people of the island, she would have\nthem take out a card and read the Scripture verse; and then pray very quickly\nwith them.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>A bond developed between her and many of the young people.&nbsp;\nSome of them dared to come to church on Sundays, and Mom would teach them using\nflannel graph stories from the Bible (that was <b><i>way<\/i><\/b> before the computer\ngraphics we have today!).&nbsp; Her flair for teaching the Bible using these illustrations\nwas unsurpassed.&nbsp;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In the 65-plus years I've been around, I've never met\nanyone else who could teach like she did!&nbsp; It paid dividends everywhere\nshe and Dad ministered -- and the dividends were paid in the lives of the young\npeople with whom she shared the Word -- a few of those young boys being in one\nform of ministry or another today.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\n  mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#663300'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n  font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> had its equivalent to Paul <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span>\nin the arctic.&nbsp; I've shared with you the story of Paul <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span>\n-- the Eskimo from Wainwright, <\/span><st1:State><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Alaska<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:State><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> -- who\nprayed for 40 years for the salvation and deliverance of the Eskimo people\nscattered across the arctic.&nbsp; In that story, I shared how we learned that\nwhen Paul began to intercede for his people, and for all those folks he'd\nattempted to share the Gospel with, it was the exact timing of God's audible\ncall to my father in that old Methodist camp meeting when the Lord said to him,\n&quot;I want you to go to Alaska for me.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Likewise when we came to Barrow, the church was built, and\nthe Holy Spirit began to be poured out just as Paul had prayed, he heard what\nwas happening and -- at 65 years of age (or thereabouts) -- <span class=SpellE>mushed<\/span>\nhis dogs the 90 miles from Wainwright to Barrow to see for himself what God was\ndoing.&nbsp; He had literally climbed over people and waded through the crowd\nto the front of the church to throw his arms around Dad and weep at the visible\nanswer to that which he had interceded all those years.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\n  mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#663300'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n  font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> had its Paul <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span>, too.&nbsp; His\nname was John <span class=SpellE>Merculief<\/span>.&nbsp; Raised in the Russian\nOrthodox traditions of the islands, he had left <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> in his twenties and worked several jobs in the northwest.&nbsp;\nWhile in <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\n  Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Seattle<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>, he had walked into a Pentecostal church where he heard the\nGospel preached for the first time in his life.&nbsp; The reality of a personal\nrelationship with Jesus Christ hit home when he bowed his knees and invited\nJesus Christ to become Lord and Savior of his life.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>He stayed in the northwest long enough to become well\ngrounded in the Word and to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit.&nbsp;\nHowever, there was an increasing burning desire within his being to return to\nthe islands and share with his family the truths of the Word he knew they had\nmissed hearing in the Russian Orthodox church.&nbsp; Upon his return to <\/span><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>, the first person he went to talk to was the Orthodox priest.&nbsp;\nThe priest had no use for John's sharing of the life of Christ that was in him,\nhowever, and immediately branded him a heretic in the community.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>John wasn't about to be deterred.&nbsp; He shared with\nvarious family members, and anyone else in the community that would give him\nfive minutes.&nbsp; He traveled across the water the 42 miles to <\/span><st1:place><st2:Sn><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Saint<\/span><\/st2:Sn><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\n Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> <\/span><st2:middlename><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>George<\/span><\/st2:middlename><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> <\/span><st2:Sn><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Island<\/span><\/st2:Sn><\/st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> where he shared\nwith other relatives and friends.&nbsp; Some of those family members recognized\nthe truth of what John was sharing and invited Jesus Christ to become their\nLord as well.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Persecution and opposition mounted within the communities,\nhowever, among people who could not see the difference between\n&quot;religion&quot; and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and\nconsidered that John had &quot;departed from the faith.&quot;&nbsp; In fact,\nJohn had departed from religion TO faith!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Faith, as we all well know, is not a religion, it is not a\ndogma, it is not a church or denomination, <span class=GramE>it<\/span> is not a\nset of beliefs or a philosophy of living.&nbsp; The apostle Paul wrote to the\nRomans (see Chapter 10:17) and said,<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;\nfont-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\nGaramond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#006600'>&quot;So then faith cometh\nby hearing, and hearing by the word of God.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>You can't <i>hear<\/i> a denomination.&nbsp; You can't <i>hear<\/i>\na philosophy.&nbsp; A philosophy is a manner of reasoning, and faith is the\nexact opposite of reasoning.&nbsp; Faith takes place in one's spirit -- NOT\ntheir head!&nbsp; In his epistle to the Galatians, he wrote,<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#006600'>&quot;For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision <span\nclass=SpellE>availeth<\/span> any thing, nor <span class=SpellE>uncircumcision<\/span>;\nbut faith which <span class=SpellE>worketh<\/span> by love.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#006600'>&nbsp;<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><span\nclass=GramE><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>(<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\nGaramond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Galatians5:6)<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Faith, therefore, is a tangible substance which produces\ntangible results -- changes in the lives of those who hear the Word of the\nLord, and evidentiary proof of the power and authority of God working in the\nlife of the believer.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>Because<\/span> faith works by the<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><i><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#192763'>agape<\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>love of God, it\nhas no fear, it doesn't work in the presence of fear, and intimidation has no\neffect.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>John <span class=SpellE>Merculief<\/span> was not in the\nleast intimidated by the religious opposition, and he decided to simply attend\nthe Orthodox services, stand in back (people stand up the whole time in\nOrthodox services, anyway) and simply pray in the Spirit over the people, over\nthe community and over the priest.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>Week<\/span> after\nweek, month after month, and year after year, John <span class=SpellE>Merculief<\/span>\nprayed and interceded in the Spirit for the folks at Saint Paul Island and\nSaint George Island.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>Dad and Mom's arrival at <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#660033'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#660033'> to preach the Gospel was a direct answer to John's prayers, and\nno one was happier than he to see them come.&nbsp; He had prayed and interceded\nover the Aleut people for some 20 years.&nbsp; <span class=GramE>He<\/span>\nbecame a regular participant in the services for the first years Dad preached\nuntil his health began to fail him.&nbsp; Though he would be in the Sunday\nservices at the Assembly of God church, he would also be in the Orthodox services\nas often as possible.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>In later years, John became a good friend to Della and me.&nbsp;\n<span class=GramE>We<\/span> enjoyed our fellowship with him, and our\nconversations rarely dealt with anything other than the Word of God.&nbsp; I\nasked him one day about his continued participation in the Orthodox services\nand he answered very simply, &quot;I pray all the more for their salvation.&nbsp;\nNow that you folks are here, and the Gospel is being preached on this island, I\npray that the Holy Spirit will give them hearts to hear the truth.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>Twenty two or twenty-three years after Dad and Mom first\ncame to <\/span><st1:place><st1:PlaceName><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n  font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#660033'>Saint Paul<\/span><\/st1:PlaceName><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#660033'> <\/span><st1:PlaceType><span class=GramE><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#660033'>Island<\/span><\/span><\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place><span\nclass=GramE><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>,<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\nGaramond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#660033'> John went home to be with\nthe Lord, praying over the islands even on his death bed.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#660033'>There are a few more stories I'd like to share with you\nbefore we wrap up this series, but maybe we can finish this adventure story\nwithin the next week or two.&nbsp;
