<span\nclass=SpellE>Right<\/span><\/span><span class=SpellE>?<\/span>&nbsp; After all,\ntoday is Wednesday, and we've got lots to be thankful for!<\/span><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Monday's Coffee Break apparently hit a nerve with a few\nfolks, so let me begin by saying that it was not my intention to offend any of\nmy Russian Orthodox friends or readers by my <span class=SpellE>remarks.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Guess<\/span> maybe I need to clarify <span class=SpellE>myself.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI have lots of friends who are Russian Orthodox -- good friends, in fact -- and\nthey understand that my position or statements come from a spiritual\nperspective and are not intended to be personal slams against them, their\nmanner of worship or traditions.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I've no quarrel with the gorgeous music in the Russian\nOrthodox <span class=SpellE>church.<\/span>&nbsp; I don't even mind if folks\nwant to retain some of the form or the pomp and <span class=SpellE>ceremony.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI'm not here to judge folks who want to retain pomp and <span class=SpellE>ceremony.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat's between them and the Lord.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Where I take issue with Orthodoxy is when priests and\nministers who are supposed to represent the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus\nChrist (along with the power and authority, and the<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><i><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:blue'>agape<\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> love and faith which are characteristic of Jesus Christ) trade\nthat life for pomp, ceremony and traditions of men, and leave out the weightier\nmatters of love, faith, power, and the authority of the believer in <span\nclass=SpellE>Christ.<\/span>&nbsp; That's when Christianity becomes a religion\ninstead of a personal relationship with the <span class=SpellE>Lord.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat's when it becomes death warmed over instead of having the power to change\nand transform lives into living examples of Jesus Christ.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>There is nothing religious about the <span class=SpellE>Lord.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; There<\/span> is nothing religious about a personal\nrelationship with Him.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Tradition and ceremony are one <span class=SpellE>thing.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThey just don't happen to be life-giving in a spiritual <span class=SpellE>sense.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThey may well please people's soul and flesh, but that isn't what Christianity\nis <span class=SpellE>about.<\/span>&nbsp; There is no communication of the\npower of God in ceremony, tradition, pomp and <span class=SpellE>circumstance.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThere is no life-changing power in <span class=SpellE>ceremony.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThere is no life-giving agape love in traditions established by men -- no\nmatter how esthetically beautiful or eye-pleasing (or ear-pleasing) it may <span\nclass=SpellE>be.<\/span>&nbsp; Jesus was\/is NEVER about tradition: He is about\ntransforming us and restoring us to the image in which He created us before the\n<span class=SpellE>fall.<\/span>&nbsp; He is out to have for Himself a family\nof folks who are just like Him.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>OK?&nbsp; Are we <span class=SpellE>clear?<\/span>&nbsp;\nHave traditions, if you <span class=SpellE>like.<\/span>&nbsp; Have ceremony,\nif you <span class=SpellE>like.<\/span>&nbsp; Have all the pomp and\ncircumstance that tickles your <span class=SpellE>fancy.<\/span>&nbsp; Just\ndon't leave out the real life that comes in a personal love-relationship with\nJesus Christ, along with the attendant demonstrations of His life and power.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>As you will see in the unfolding story of Saint Paul\nIsland, despite the opposition, the religious persecution, the all-out efforts\nto literally steal the land out from under my folks, their home and the church\nthey built, the testimony they left behind and the ministry they poured out\nthrough their lives in 35 years of labor there (21 for Dad before he went to be\nwith the Lord) brought change to the community, a lasting tribute to them, and\nsalvation and transformation in the lives of every Russian Orthodox priest who\nserved on the island during their years.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Let me begin by saying that Della and I absolutely love\nSaint Paul <span class=SpellE>Island.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; We<\/span>\nlove the people <span class=SpellE>there.<\/span>&nbsp; If the Lord had called\nus to that island, we'd be there in a <span class=SpellE>heartbeat!<\/span>&nbsp;\nWe count many of the islanders as personal friends -- family, if you <span\nclass=SpellE>will.<\/span>&nbsp; The Lord did a bonding together for us with\nthose folks that has never <span class=SpellE>left.<\/span>&nbsp; To us, Saint\nPaul Island is like Hawaii without the trees and warm <span class=SpellE>tradewinds.<\/span>&nbsp;\nBut, wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Christmas morning, 1965, should have begun like any other\nSaint Paul <span class=SpellE>morning.<\/span>&nbsp; It <span class=SpellE>didn't.<\/span>&nbsp;\nVery strong winds -- hurricane force winds, in fact -- had been blowing in from\nthe <span class=SpellE>east.<\/span>&nbsp; The waters off Saint Paul Island are\ndeep.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Before I continue, let me provide you with a bit of\nperspective.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In Monday's post, I told you that Saint Paul Island is\nlocated in the Bering Sea some 350 miles north of Cold Bay in the Aleutians,\nand approximately 500 miles from Dillingham in Bristol Bay on the mainland (or\na thousand miles, give or take, from Anchorage).<span class=GramE>&nbsp; Being<\/span>\nsituated in the Bering Sea (one could call that the northernmost waters of the\nPacific or the southernmost waters of the Arctic Ocean) puts it right where the\nmajority of North America's storms have their origins.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Now, if you happen to be a meteorologist and take issue\nwith that remark, I'll forgive <span class=SpellE>you.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Meteorologically<\/span>, there may be other factors\ninvolved, but if you've ever lived out in the <\/span><st1:place><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#663300'>Bering Sea<\/span><\/st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>, you know\nexactly what I'm talking about!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The Discovery Channel (and its counterpart, the Travel\nChannel) airs weekly programs that refer to the <span class=SpellE>Pribil of<\/span>\nIsland waters as the most dangerous place to fish in the entire <span\nclass=SpellE>world.<\/span>&nbsp; An average of 17 people lose their lives in\nthose waters every single <span class=SpellE>year.<\/span>&nbsp; Our oldest\nson, Chris, served as a fishing vessel's chief engineer for one season in those\nwaters and decided the risks weren't worth <span class=SpellE>it.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe same vessel he served on went down without a trace with all hands on board\nthe year after he quit, and he lost some of his close friends from Saint Paul\nIsland.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>OK.<span class=GramE>&nbsp; I've<\/span> said all that to\nlay a foundation for Christmas morning, 1965.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad and Mom awoke to hear a very peculiar <span\nclass=SpellE>sound.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; It<\/span> almost (?)\nsounded like they were on a houseboat, with waves lapping at the side.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad got out of bed, put his britches on and went to open\nthe front <span class=SpellE>door.<\/span>&nbsp; 300 - 500 yards in any\ndirection was nothing but <span class=SpellE>ocean.<\/span>&nbsp; It actually\nlooked (and felt) like the house had been floated out to <span class=SpellE>sea.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIn fact, the house was still securely anchored to the <span class=SpellE>land.<\/span>&nbsp;\nDad had built the place at Saint Paul just like he had built in Barrow,\nWainwright and Point Hope, positioning the house on posts driven into the\nground with about three feet of space between the floor joists and the ground.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Good <span class=SpellE>thing!<\/span>&nbsp; Had he built\nany lower, the house would have been flooded and might well have floated <span\nclass=SpellE>away.<\/span>&nbsp; As it was, the water level was right up to the\nlevel of the floor <span class=SpellE>joists.<\/span>&nbsp; The strong east\nwinds had brought the water level up to the point where the lagoon had flooded\nand the tide had come in, swamping everything on the lower parts of the <span\nclass=SpellE>island.<\/span>&nbsp; The southern tip of the island was a hill\nwhere most of the island's residents had their <span class=SpellE>homes.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThose homes were cut off from the rest of the island by the water which had\noverflowed the low-lying peninsula where Dad had built.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad found himself once again (remember 1944?) speaking to\nthe storm and the seas and commanding <span class=SpellE>peace.<\/span>&nbsp; I\ndo not remember how many hours they had to wait for the waters to subside, but\nthe damage to their place was relatively <span class=SpellE>minor.<\/span>&nbsp;\nOther houses built during the days of the Russian fur traders broke apart and\nfloated away, but the community took everything pretty much in <span\nclass=SpellE>stride.<\/span>&nbsp; They did live, after all, in one of the most\nconsistently windy parts of the world where there are only an average of seven\ndays a year when the wind does not blow at least 15 knots (17 mph).<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Realizing that although this might be a freak situation,\nit was still a potentially deadly location in the event of future storms of\ngreater intensity, and he applied to the Bureau of Fisheries for a change in\nhis land grant -- a change that would move him to somewhat higher <span\nclass=SpellE>ground.<\/span>&nbsp; The following summer, he jacked the house up\nby hand and moved it to a new location some three hundred yards to the west --\nbut not before hauling gravel and scoria from nearby Black Diamond Hill and\nraising the ground level by some three-to-four feet <span class=SpellE>first.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIn a way it was reminiscent of Barrow and having to fill in swampy ground with\nall those truck loads of gravel before he could begin construction of the\nchurch there.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Saint Paul Island differed from every other place where\nDad had gone to build and to establish the <span class=SpellE>Gospel.<\/span>&nbsp;\nSure, there were some pre-existing churches in the communities before we\narrived, but mostly (at least at first) he was welcomed and made to feel\ndesired in the <span class=SpellE>community.<\/span>&nbsp; Saint Paul was not\nthat at <span class=SpellE>all.<\/span>&nbsp; Hostility was the order of the <span\nclass=SpellE>day.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad and Mom were <span class=SpellE>interlopers.<\/span>&nbsp;\nAfter all, who did they think they were coming to bring some new religion into\ntown when what they had was just fine?<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>And therein lay the <span class=SpellE>issue.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThey weren't there to bring in some new <span class=SpellE>religion.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIn fact, they were there to do the complete <span class=SpellE>opposite.<\/span>&nbsp;\nJesus is about as un-religious as you can possibly <span class=SpellE>get!<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class=SpellE>Nope.<\/span>&nbsp; They weren't there to bring another\nreligion, they were there to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Jesus had put it this way (see Luke 4:18-19),<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#006600'>&quot;The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed\nme to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,\nto preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to\nset at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the\nLord.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Saint Paul Island was an island of the &quot;poor&quot; in\njust about ever sense of the <span class=SpellE>word.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nDon't<\/span> get me <span class=SpellE>wrong.<\/span>&nbsp; There were some\nrighteous folk <span class=SpellE>there.<\/span>&nbsp; There were people on the\nisland who had experienced a genuine salvation experience with Jesus <span\nclass=SpellE>Christ.<\/span>&nbsp; There were a few even who were unashamed to\nspeak of their walk with the <span class=SpellE>Lord.<\/span>&nbsp; They were\nin such a minority, however, that they were pretty much intimidated into\nkeeping silence.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The Orthodox priest ruled the island with an iron <span\nclass=SpellE>fist.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; His<\/span> word was <span\nclass=SpellE>law.<\/span>&nbsp; Whatever he said went -- no matter what anyone\nelse had to say about <span class=SpellE>it.<\/span>&nbsp; Even in cases where\ncrimes had been committed and Alaska State Troopers had been sent to\ninvestigate, when the priest commanded silence concerning the issue so as to\nprotect the guilty, people with knowledge of the crime would remain silent and\nnot speak out.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The result was that Saint Paul Island was a literal\ngarbage <span class=SpellE>disposal.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; The<\/span>\nassistant priest was sleeping with women in the community and getting them\npregnant, and having children by them whom he wouldn't <span class=SpellE>support.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe Alaska Department of Social Services couldn't get any cooperation in\nforcing him to pay child support because the senior priest commanded silence in\nthe community.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The lay reader in the Russian Orthodox <span class=GramE>church<\/span>\nwas a falling down drunk who persistently beat his wife and children, sometimes\nto the point of breaking bones and causing severe injury.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When some of these same people began to come to the church\nservices Dad and Mom held, heard the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for\nthe first time in their lives and made a commitment to the Lord resulting in\ndramatic change in their lives, the priest issued an edict to the community.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#192763'>&quot;If you go to the <span class=SpellE>Capeners<\/span>'\nchurch and die, you will not be buried in the city <span class=SpellE>cemetery.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; You<\/span> will be buried in the cemetery reserved for\nsinners.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>You may laugh at the absurdity of the edict, but to those\npeople it meant either going to Heaven or <span class=SpellE>Hell.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Out<\/span> of fear, some folks recanted their profession of <span\nclass=SpellE>salvation.<\/span>&nbsp; For awhile it had a measurable effect on\nthe number of people who dared to come to the worship <span class=SpellE>services.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe non-native population of the island couldn't have cared less about the\nedict since most of them were not Russian Orthodox; and they became the core of\nthe church for years to come.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In the 1960's and early 70's, Saint Paul Island's\nnon-native population consisted of U.S. Coast Guard personnel, U.S. Weather\nBureau personnel, Bureau of Fisheries people whose primary home was often in\nAnchorage or Seattle, or somewhere on the west coast, and Department of\nEducation folks -- the Superintendent of Schools for the <span class=SpellE>Pribilof<\/span>\nIslands (also including Saint George Island), the local school principals and\nsome non-local school teacher families.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>For a time, the two churches -- the Russian Orthodox, and\nthe Assembly of God Church -- represented a picture in racial division with\nmostly White, and a few Black and Hispanic folks attending Dad &amp; Mom's\nservices and Aleuts attending the Russian Orthodox <span class=SpellE>services<span\nclass=GramE>..<\/span><\/span>&nbsp; It was an unintentional consequence of the\nthreats leveled by the priest against the longtime residents of the <span\nclass=SpellE>community.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Things<\/span> were not\ngoing to continue that way, however.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Mom made it her business to get out and mingle in the <span\nclass=SpellE>community.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Her<\/span> flair for\nsocializing and creating public dinners, teas and the like (And, Brother,\nyou've never seen a cook or a baker like <span class=SpellE>Mom!<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat lady could put together culinary concoctions that were the envy of every\ncommunity in which she ever lived.) drew women who were sick of staying at\nhome, doing nothing, or being abused by their husbands.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Let's take just one lady as an <span class=SpellE>example.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; We'll<\/span> refer to her as &quot;<span class=SpellE>Ludy.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nShe was hardly the picture of an abused <span class=SpellE>woman.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; For<\/span> appearance and mannerisms, <span class=SpellE>Ludy<\/span>\nmight as well have been a <span class=SpellE>Czarina.<\/span>&nbsp; She had\nboth a commanding personality and carried herself like <span class=SpellE>royalty.<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class=SpellE>Ludy<\/span> was a woman of influence in the Russian Orthodox\nchurch, and her voice carried a lot of clout among the ladies on the <span\nclass=SpellE>island.<\/span>&nbsp; She and Mom hit it off together and became\nfast <span class=SpellE>friends.<\/span>&nbsp; Their friendship lasted through\nmore than 30 years before both died in 2000.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>A day came when during the course of a normal, everyday\nconversation, Mom asked <span class=SpellE>Ludy<\/span> if she had ever made\nJesus Christ Lord of her <span class=SpellE>life.<\/span>&nbsp; <span\nclass=SpellE>Ludy<\/span> had always professed to be a Christian, but this was\nnot something she was familiar <span class=SpellE>with.<\/span>&nbsp; When Mom\nexplained what she was talking about, <span class=SpellE>Ludy<\/span> bowed her\nhead right then and invited Jesus Christ to become both Lord and Savior of her <span\nclass=SpellE>life.<\/span>&nbsp; It would be a turning point of sorts in the <span\nclass=SpellE>community.<\/span>&nbsp; The joy that began to be exhibited in <span\nclass=SpellE>Ludy's<\/span> life was infectious, and other women began to check\nthings out.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Mom, being the entertaining-type anyway, was in her <span\nclass=SpellE>element.<\/span>&nbsp; It was made to order for <span\nclass=SpellE>her.<\/span>&nbsp; The apostle Paul, in letters to Timothy and\nTitus, makes reference to a bishop being<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;\nfont-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\nGaramond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#006600'>&quot;a lover of\nhospitality&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>\n<\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>or<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>\n<\/span><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#006600'>&quot;given to <span class=SpellE>hospitality.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>&nbsp; The apostle Peter, in his letters, instructs folks to<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#006600'>&quot;use hospitality one to <span class=SpellE>another.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nclass=GramE><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>&nbsp; (<\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>see I Timothy\n3:2, Titus 1:8, and I Peter 4:9)&nbsp; I personally can't think of any person\nwho better exhibited this trait than my <span class=SpellE>mother.<\/span>&nbsp;\nShe &quot;used hospitality&quot; to minister the Gospel in ways she must have\ninvented at the direction of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One thing about it: when women begin to get excited about\nsomething, their husbands always want to check things <span class=SpellE>out.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; No<\/span> matter how retiring a guy might be, if his wife\ngets turned on about something, and her excitement lasts more than a few\nminutes, a few days or a few weeks, he's going to get <span class=SpellE>curious.<\/span>&nbsp;\nAleut (the pronunciation, incidentally, is: <span class=SpellE>al'<b>.<\/b>leh<b>.<\/b>oot<\/span>)\nmen are just like everyone else in this respect.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span class=SpellE><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Ludy's<\/span><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> husband decides to check things out -- but not the way you'd <span\nclass=SpellE>think.<\/span>&nbsp; It seems that <span class=SpellE>Ludy<\/span>\nand her husband had a daughter who lived in Seattle (it may have been\nAnchorage, but memory says Seattle).<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Guess I missed telling you something important, and this\nis the place to stick it <span class=SpellE>in.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nI've<\/span> already told you in a previous Coffee Break that Dad had passed his\ntests and received his General Class Ham license while in Point <span\nclass=SpellE>Hope.<\/span>&nbsp; He was assigned the call letters,\nKL7-EGE.&nbsp; One of the things he'd done was to rebuild an ancient linear\namplifier capable of putting out a kilowatt of <span class=SpellE>power.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHe linked that to a Swan 500.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The Coast Guard station had abandoned a three hundred-foot\ntower in favor of a newer, more durable 600-foot <span class=SpellE>tower.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe old tower was lowered to the ground with some assistance, and the Coast\nGuard commander gave it to Dad to do with whatever he <span class=SpellE>wanted.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHe disassembled most of the tower, but kept a 60-foot portion to put up a\n40-meter quad antenna, along with some directional inverted dipoles at other\ncommonly used <span class=SpellE>frequencies.<\/span>&nbsp; (You Ham radio\naficionados know what I'm talking about.)<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>This gave him some wonderful and very reliable radio\ncommunications which allowed him to link up with people world-<span\nclass=SpellE>wide.<\/span>&nbsp; It also gave him just about the only means of\nreliable communications on the island with the outside world.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I've said all that to say this: <span class=SpellE>Ludy's<\/span>\nhusband (we'll refer to him as &quot;<span class=SpellE>Prokoff<\/span>&quot;)\nwanted to make contact with their daughter, and apparently there was some\nfamily emergency <span class=SpellE>involved.<\/span>&nbsp; He came by the\nhouse one morning to ask Dad if it was possible to get a message through to\ntheir <span class=SpellE>daughter.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad dropped what he was doing\nand immediately went to the <span class=SpellE>radio.<\/span>&nbsp; Within\nminutes, he had established a link with a Ham radio operator in Seattle who\nlinked up with the phone system and made the call to the <span class=SpellE>daughter.<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class=SpellE>Prokoff<\/span> was able to resolve some critical issues in a\nmatter of minutes.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>After the phone patch was disconnected, <span\nclass=SpellE>Prokoff<\/span> hung around for a few minutes to <span\nclass=SpellE>talk.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> obviously had a\nspiritual burden he was carrying that he had not been able to deal with and\nchose that moment to unload on <span class=SpellE>Dad.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad\nquietly listened, then asked if they could pray <span class=SpellE>together.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIt was a made-to-order <span class=SpellE>opportunity.<\/span>&nbsp; Before the\nmorning ended <span class=SpellE>Prokoff<\/span> had accepted Jesus Christ as\nhis personal Lord and Savior.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I've run out of day, so let's pick this up on <span\nclass=SpellE>Friday.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;
