<span class=SpellE>Riiiiiiigghhhhttt<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Coffee's a bit stronger than usual <span class=SpellE>today.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI did my normal three scoops of French Roast in the grinder, and then added a\nscoop of some pretty dark-roasted stuff from the island of Java in <span\nclass=SpellE>Indonesia.<\/span>&nbsp; It may not match Michael's Black Tiger,\nbut a cup of this stuff will raise an eyebrow or two.. Come on by and have a\ncup!<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Well, let's get right to today's tale of faith and\nadventure, shall we?<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>David <span class=SpellE>Frankson<\/span> was the\npostmaster at Point <span class=SpellE>Hope.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nI'm<\/span> not sure how long he had filled that position, but I suspect he was\nlikely only the third or fourth postmaster in the village's whole <span\nclass=SpellE>history.<\/span>&nbsp; A wizened sort of a guy, he was the perfect\ncaricature of a hunter and trapper -- and he certainly did his fair share of\nboth in order to keep meat on the table for his rather large family.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>David was also a longtime Episcopalian and a solid member\nof the Episcopal church at Point <span class=SpellE>Hope.<\/span>&nbsp; Those\nearly Episcopal missionaries had the spiritual goods when they established that\nchurch many decades earlier, and the next two or three generations of ministers\nwho followed them did their best to lay some decent foundations in the people\nof the <span class=SpellE>village.<\/span>&nbsp; What they and the more recent\ngenerations did not have was an understanding of spiritual warfare, nor any\nconcept of how evil spirits capitalize on ancient traditions to hold people in\ncaptivity.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Tradition is one of the greatest snares to spiritual\nadvancement and growth in one's walk with Jesus <span class=SpellE>Christ.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIf that tradition happens to be founded in what folks so glibly refer to as\n&quot;mother nature,&quot; animism (the belief that certain animals embody\nspiritual power and authority, and are due reverence and worship), and\nshamanism.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>So that you better understand shamanism, let me cite a\nparagraph or two from the Encarta Encyclopedia's definition:<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><i><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;color:#663300'>[A Shaman is a] religious specialist, originally found in\nhunting-gathering cultures, which are loosely structured, technologically\nsimple, and homogeneous. The word shaman is derived from a word in the <span\nclass=SpellE>Tungusic<\/span> language of <\/span><\/i><st1:place><i><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;color:#663300'>Siberia<\/span><\/i><\/st1:place><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;color:#663300'>, one of the areas in which the\nclassical form of shamanism is found.<\/span><\/i><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;color:#663300'>Although a shaman can\nachieve religious status by heredity, personal quest, or vocation, the\nrecognition and call of the individual is always an essential part of that\nindividual's elevation to the new status. The shaman, usually a man, is\nessentially a medium, a mouthpiece of the spirits who became his familiars at\nhis initiation, during which he frequently undergoes prolonged fasts,\nseclusion, and other ordeals leading to dreams and visions. Training by experienced\nshamans follows.<\/span><\/i><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;color:#663300'>The main religious tasks of\na shaman are healing and divination. Both are achieved either by spirit\npossession or by the departure of the shaman's soul to heaven or to the\nunderworld. Shamans also divine the whereabouts of game, the position of the\nenemy, and the best way of safeguarding and increasing the food supply. Shamans\nmay occupy an elevated social and economic position, especially if they are\nsuccessful <span class=SpellE>healers.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;color:#663300'> 1993-2003 Microsoft Corporation. All\nrights reserved.<\/span><\/i><i><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'><br>\n<\/span><\/i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'><br>\nShamans have been a part of Eskimo and Indian culture for many centuries, and\nshamanistic tradition was certainly ingrained in the Inupiat culture of the\narctic coasts of <\/span><st1:State><st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n  font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Alaska<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:State><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>, <\/span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span style='font-size:\n  13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Canada<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>, and <span class=SpellE>Greenland.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nEncarta's<\/span> description incorporates several words all Christians should\nfind extremely enlightening -- particularly in light of God's command to His\npeople.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In Deuteronomy 18:10-21, we are told,<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#005500'>&quot;There shall not be found among you any one that <span\nclass=SpellE>maketh<\/span> his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or\nthat <span class=SpellE>useth<\/span> divination, or an observer of times, or an\nenchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a\nwizard, or a <span class=SpellE>necromancer.<\/span>&nbsp; For all that do\nthese things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these\nabominations <u>the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee<\/u>.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#005500'>&quot;Thou <span class=SpellE>shalt<\/span> be perfect with\nthe LORD thy <span class=SpellE>God.<\/span>&nbsp; and he shall\nspeak unto them all that I shall command <span class=SpellE>him.<\/span>&nbsp;\nAnd it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which\nhe shall speak in my name, I will require it of <span class=SpellE>him.<\/span>&nbsp;\nBut the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have\nnot commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even\nthat prophet shall die.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#005500'>&quot;And if thou say in <span class=SpellE>thine<\/span>\nheart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not <span class=SpellE>spoken<span\nclass=GramE>?<\/span><\/span>&nbsp; When a prophet <span class=SpellE>speaketh<\/span>\nin the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the\nthing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it\npresumptuously: thou <span class=SpellE>shalt<\/span> not be afraid of\nhim.&quot;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Now, I may be a bit long in my quotation from Deuteronomy\n18, but I wanted to draw the complete picture for you so you can understand the\nbondage of people who live under shamans, witches, fortune tellers,\nastrologers, mediums and the <span class=SpellE>like.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nEncarta's<\/span> description of a shaman includes &quot;divination&quot; and\n&quot;a consulter with familiar <span class=SpellE>spirits.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat description also incorporates the fact that the shaman accomplishes his\npurposes by &quot;spirit possession&quot; -- meaning that the shaman is\npossessed by evil spirits.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The shaman certainly does not accomplish his goals and\npurposes by and through the Holy Spirit, and God's Word makes very clear the\nfact that He directs His people through a prophet whom He calls, commissions\nand anoints to speak only what He <span class=SpellE>says.<\/span>&nbsp; The\nconsequence under the Law of Moses for the person who dared speak as an oracle\nor mouthpiece of God words that did not come from Him was <span class=SpellE>death.<\/span>&nbsp;\nYou see, God's purpose is to direct His people to health, to strength, to\nprosperity, to abundant living -- all in stark contrast to those who listen to\nthe voices of evil spirits.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One of Encarta's descriptions of the shaman is that he\noccupies an elevated social and economic <span class=SpellE>position.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; You<\/span> may recall the story I shared with you in the\nseries of Coffee Breaks titled, 15 STEPS, of the young man -- &quot;Johnny&quot;\n-- who had been being prepared and &quot;anointed&quot; to become the next\nshaman in Barrow, and the disastrous outcome of his life when he failed to\nreceive the deliverance he needed from those evil spirits.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The shaman in Point Hope certainly occupied an elevated\nsocial position in the minds of the villagers, and -- like all shamans --\nparlayed his position for control over and in the lives of those people who\nrevered the power and authority he was perceived to <span class=SpellE>possess.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; To<\/span> a large extent, the local shaman's influence in\nthe community had been largely lost to the message of Jesus Christ and previous\nEpiscopal priests who genuinely preached the Gospel.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When we arrived in Point Hope, however, the community had\nbeen through a period of declining influence of the Gospel due to watered-down\npreaching from priests who did not know the Lord personally, and simply held\ntheir titles and positions for political and personal <span class=SpellE>reasons.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Correspondingly<\/span>, the power and influence of the\nshaman had been increasing, and he had played his position and perceived\nauthority for all it was worth.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The extent of his &quot;divination&quot; of where the best\nhunting was for the villagers was more hype than reality, and his use of\nincantations, spells, potions and the like to create an aura of &quot;healing&quot;\nfor sick people was more deception than <span class=SpellE>reality.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe &quot;healed&quot; people often began to suffer from recurrence of their\nillnesses, diseases or afflictions, and because they had experienced momentary\nrelief during their previous &quot;healing&quot; episodes with the shaman, they\nwould return for more of the <span class=SpellE>same.<\/span>&nbsp; Through\nthis repetitious cycle of perceived &quot;healing&quot; the shaman gained in\ninfluence and perceived spiritual <span class=SpellE>power.<\/span>&nbsp; What\nno one seemed to see (and in truth their eyes had been blinded by evil spirits)\nwas that no real healing was taking <span class=SpellE>place.<\/span>&nbsp; The\npeople were simply being kept in bondage to the shaman.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The priest who was serving the Episcopal church at Point\nHope when we arrived found himself in a battle of wills and a continual vying\nfor power and <span class=SpellE>influence.<\/span>&nbsp; Because he lacked\nspiritual authority, those who continued their attendance in the church did so\nmore out of tradition and habit than out of receiving any real <span\nclass=SpellE>ministry.<\/span>&nbsp; The priest found himself having to play\nthe same manipulative games the shaman used, often deploying fear as a tactic,\nalong with threats that if the people did not follow his direction, when they\ndied they would not be buried in the &quot;sacred&quot; cemetery with the rest\nof the Christians.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Sorry for the long preface to today's story, but I wanted\nyou to see the spiritual darkness that prevailed in Point Hope when we arrived.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>David <span class=SpellE>Frankson<\/span> was among those\nvillagers who had experienced genuine salvation when Dad and Howard Andersen\nhad pitched their tent and held their evangelistic meetings during their\ncoastal <span class=SpellE>journey.<\/span>&nbsp; His near-lifetime attachment\nto the Episcopal church, however, kept him faithful in his attendance and that\nof his family; and when we opened the doors of the new church for the first\ntime, the <span class=SpellE>Frankson<\/span> family was not <span class=SpellE>there.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThere were curiosity-seekers who came to find out what we were doing and saying\nfor the first few weeks, but apart from two or three families who decided to\nbreak from their traditions and become a part of the new church, attendance and\nparticipation was pretty sparse.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was a stark contrast to Barrow and Wainwright, and\nharked back to the early days of Dad's ministry in <span class=SpellE>Nome.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; A<\/span> group of young teenage girls in the village took to\nMom, however, and though they were afraid (because of peer pressure and family\npressure) to come to the regular church services, they gladly participated in a\nclub that Mom decided to call &quot;The <span class=SpellE>Esthers.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nPatterned after Esther in Old Testament times, Mom used the opportunity to\ntrain these young girls in social graces while at the same time drawing a\npicture of the call of Jesus Christ as King to his bride-in-preparation.<\/span><span\nstyle='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One of the young girls who was drawn to the message of\nJesus Christ was David <span class=SpellE>Frankson's<\/span> daughter, <span\nclass=SpellE>Rosa.<\/span>&nbsp; One day as Mom was sharing, Rosa and a couple\nof her friends responded to the quickening of the Holy Spirit and made Jesus\nChrist Lord of their <span class=SpellE>lives.<\/span>&nbsp; Not long\nthereafter, Rosa was baptized in the Holy Spirit.<\/span><span style='font-family:\nArial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The change in this 12-year-old girl was nothing short of <span\nclass=SpellE>spectacular.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; had \ngrown to a sizeable group of young <span class=SpellE>girls.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; More<\/span> than that, these youngsters were coming to \nregular church services and dragging their parents along with <span\nclass=SpellE>them.<\/span>&nbsp; To this point, however, Rosa's parents and \nfamily members were not among them.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Among those families who had started coming and whose lives \nwere experiencing genuine change by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ were \nfolks who had previously been very dependent on the <span class=SpellE>shaman.<\/span>&nbsp; \nThe shaman did not take kindly to their testimony of the saving grace of Jesus \nChrist.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One of the things that is true of all those -- whether \nshamans, astrologers, witches, sorcerers, mediums, or whatever -- who utilize, \nor attempt to utilize, spiritual power and authority is that they themselves \nlive in <span class=SpellE>deception.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; It<\/span>\nis a deception foisted off on them by the evil spirits whose lies they have <span\nclass=SpellE>believed.<\/span>&nbsp; They believe that their authority is real \nand that they have power over life and death -- power they can exercise over \npeople who will not respond to or recognize them.<\/span><span style='font-family:\nArial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The shaman in Point Hope was one of those unfortunates so <span\nclass=SpellE>deceived.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> took personally \nthe loss of influence in the lives of the families who were abandoning him and \ndecided to do something about <span class=SpellE>it.<\/span>&nbsp; One very still \nwinter night I was awakened to hear a voice muttering incoherent words <span class=SpellE>\noutside.<\/span>&nbsp; (In the cold temperatures of the arctic, sound carries for \nmiles.)&nbsp; I got out of bed and looked out the window to see the shaman \nwalking in circles around our house throwing some kind of powder or substance \ntoward our <span class=SpellE>place.<\/span>&nbsp; I said to myself, &quot;<i>You've <\/i><\/span><st1:stockticker><i><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#663300'>GOT<\/span><\/i><\/st1:stockticker><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> to be KIDDING!<\/span><\/i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>&quot; and went back to bed.<\/span><span style='font-family:\nArial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Over a period of several nights, this activity continued, \nalternately awakening my mother, then my father, and even my <span\nclass=SpellE>brother.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; We<\/span> talked about it a \nfew times in our morning devotions and laughed at the silliness and foolish \narrogance of Satan.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The priest was also among those who took personally the \nloss of families who had been in regular attendance at the Episcopal <span\nclass=SpellE>church.<\/span>&nbsp; Feeling threatened over the loss of his \nperceived authority and influence, he decided to take action in a different way \nthan the <span class=SpellE>shaman.<\/span>&nbsp; Visiting the homes of a couple \nof the families he trusted, he said to the parents, &quot;We have to put a stop to <span class=SpellE>\nthis.<\/span>&nbsp; These people are departing from the faith, and it is all due \nto the influence of Rosa <span class=SpellE>Frankson<\/span>\nwho has been contaminated by religious <span class=SpellE>extremism.<\/span>&nbsp; \nYou need to talk to your children and have them apply pressure to Rosa to get \nher to stop.&quot;<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was the first of shots being fired in a spiritual battle \nthat would have lasting repercussions and consequences -- both in the present \nand in eternity.<\/span><span style='font-family:Arial'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>If I attempt to finish this story today, we'll run really <span\nclass=SpellE>long.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;
