The<\/span> day started off\nwith a bang, and I've been running 90 miles an hour since.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Every so often I talk about my youngest granddaughter, <span\nclass=SpellE>Jessica.<\/span>&nbsp; She and her brother, Andrew, are spending a\nfew days with us again, and predictably enough we get to enjoy her rather\nremarkable and unusual humor.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In many ways, Jessica is just like I was at that age\n(5).&nbsp; The first thing she does when she comes into my office is to look\nfor my coffee <span class=SpellE>cup.<\/span>&nbsp; If there is some coffee in\nit, whether cold or hot, she'll immediately take a <span class=SpellE>sip.<\/span>&nbsp;\n(I used to do the same thing.)&nbsp; Yesterday, she did just <span\nclass=SpellE>that.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Then<\/span> she comes out\nwith a real <span class=SpellE>corker!<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;I was hungry and you\ngave me coffee to drink,&quot; <span class=SpellE>Yikes!<\/span>&nbsp; Look\nout, <span class=SpellE>World!<\/span>&nbsp; Jessica is on her way.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>And today's coffee -- if you're done laughing -- is some\nSan Francisco Bay French <span class=SpellE>Roast.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nThe<\/span> French Press is full and running over, and I need to pour me a <span\nclass=SpellE>cup.<\/span>&nbsp; Back in a second.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>OK, got yours yet?<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When we finished on Monday, I was saying that my brother\nand I enrolled at <span class=SpellE>Burnhamthorpe<\/span> Collegiate Institute\nin <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\n  mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Toronto<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> (and stayed with some friends who lived in <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Toronto<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>) while\nour parents headed south to <\/span><st1:State><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Texas<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:State><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Travels throughout Texas and ministering in the dozens, if\nnot hundreds, of churches that Dallas pastor, Lonnie Mullen, opened up through\nhis contacts resulted in an outpouring of help in many <span class=SpellE>ways.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; During<\/span> our absence,\nthe move of the Holy Spirit across the arctic had flourished under Paul &amp;\nMarguerite Bills to the extent that we were being asked to build churches at <span\nclass=SpellE>Kaktovik<\/span> (on Barter Island in the Arctic Ocean) near the\nCanadian border, Wainwright (which was 90 miles from Barrow) and Point Hope\n(which is the farthest northwest community in Alaska.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Before that could happen, however, the Barrow church\nneeded expansion, and the Holy Spirit had some things in the works none of us\ncould have expected in our wildest <span class=SpellE>fancies.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Well<\/span>, OK, maybe we should have, but in an era when\nthe publicly miraculous seemed mostly relegated to Oral Roberts' tent crusades,\nR. W. <span class=SpellE>Schambach<\/span>, T. L. Osborn and a small group of\nfaith-teaching evangelists.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>What we saw was a state of spiritual hunger in people that\nthe Lord simply could not and would not miss <span class=SpellE>fulfilling.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; The<\/span> first Sunday that we had the auditorium enlarged\nand ready to meet more folks, the place was packed like it was when the church\nfirst opened its doors.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>During our absence from Barrow, one of the Eskimo men who\nhad come to know Jesus Christ and had been baptized in the Holy Spirit was --\nby Alaskan standards anyway -- relatively <span class=SpellE>famous.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; His<\/span> name was Ned <span class=SpellE>Nusunginya.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI don't know how many of you are bookworms, or have been into reading arctic\nadventure stories, but perhaps you've heard of a book about a dog named <span\nclass=SpellE>Balto<\/span> who was the lead dog in a team that rushed serum to\nNome during a diphtheria epidemic in 1925.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>More than 20 <span class=SpellE>mushers<\/span> participated\nin a run to get the serum to Nome from <span class=SpellE>Anchorage.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Ned<\/span> <span class=SpellE>Nusunginya<\/span> was one of\nthose <span class=SpellE>mushers.<\/span>&nbsp; He later repeated the adventure\nin getting serum to other communities in the arctic during deadly blizzard <span\nclass=SpellE>conditions.<\/span>&nbsp; That original run from Anchorage to Nome\nhas been immortalized in arctic sports through the Iditarod dog race which is\nrun now annually following pretty much the same route that carried the serum to\nNome.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>As Ned had grown throughout the years, he had developed a\nhatred for &quot;Whitey,&quot; or &quot;<span class=SpellE>tunniks<\/span>,&quot;\nas most arctic natives used to refer to white <span class=SpellE>folks.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Although<\/span> the term has generally come to be used\nnowadays with reference to any newcomer, white or otherwise, just as the term\n&quot;<span class=SpellE>cheechako<\/span>&quot; is used in the interior of\nAlaska, in early years, the term, &quot;<span class=SpellE>tunnik<\/span>,&quot;\nwas a very racist term meaning &quot;dirty white <span class=SpellE>man.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nThough he managed to keep his racist feelings mostly to himself in his work\nenvironment (he climbed the ladder of responsibility working his way to a\nsupervisory position for the DEW <span class=GramE>Line<\/span> -- Distant Early\nWarning radar system), he also had become an alcoholic.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Thus when Ned would drink, he was pretty free with his\n&quot;colorful metaphors&quot; and thought nothing of cursing the &quot;<span\nclass=SpellE>tunniks<\/span>&quot; he worked with and belittling their <span\nclass=SpellE>labors.<\/span>&nbsp; Over the years, alcohol and tobacco began to\ntake their toll on Ned and his health <span class=SpellE>deteriorated.<\/span>&nbsp;\nWhen, just past his 60th birthday, he was introduced to a real relationship\nwith Jesus Christ and subsequently baptized in the Holy Spirit, the change in\nhim was so dramatic as to stun those who had known him throughout his life, and\nthose who worked with him on a daily <span class=SpellE>basis.<\/span>&nbsp;\nMore than that, he was healed of cirrhosis of the liver, heart problems and\nnumerous other physical ailments.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Ned became the picture of <span class=SpellE>health.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> also became Dad's interpreter when he preached to\nnatives who spoke or understood little <span class=SpellE>English.<\/span>&nbsp;\nDad had been studying the Inupiat language and Ned began to work with him on a\ndaily basis to help him through his pronunciation <span class=SpellE>problems.<\/span>&nbsp;\nFYI, the Inupiat language is extremely guttural, and in some ways matches the\nHebrew language for breathing and articulation.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One Sunday morning, Dad decided to begin experimenting\nwith his use of the Inupiat tongue while Ned was standing beside <span\nclass=SpellE>him.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> had just preached a\nstrong evangelistic message and bowed his head in preparation to <span\nclass=SpellE>pray.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;<span class=SpellE>Unjgaiuta<\/span>,&quot;\nhe said, putting the accent on the &quot;<span class=SpellE>u.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nNed nearly dropped his false teeth, trying to contain <span class=SpellE>himself.\u00c2<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> regained his composure and said quietly, &quot;<span\nclass=SpellE>Unjgaiuta<\/span>,&quot; correcting the pronunciation and putting\nthe accent on the &quot;<span class=SpellE>ai<\/span>&quot; sound (pronounced\nlike a long &quot;<span class=SpellE>i<\/span>&quot;).<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I was sitting behind them with my guitar in hand and\ncaught the <span class=SpellE>correction.<\/span>&nbsp; I turned to my brother,\n<span class=SpellE>Howie<\/span>, who also had his guitar, and <span\nclass=SpellE>grinned.<\/span>&nbsp; We both knew that what Dad had said was,\n&quot;Let's dance,&quot; when he meant to say, &quot;Let us <span class=SpellE>pray.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nThere were more than a few smiles throughout the gathering that <span\nclass=SpellE>morning.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Nevertheless<\/span>,\nthose who realized the struggle Dad was going through to learn their language\nwere more than appreciative of his effort.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When the service ended, Ned did something no one could\never remember his doing in his whole <span class=SpellE>lifetime.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> turned to Dad, put his arms around him and said,\n&quot;Brother <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span>, I love <span class=SpellE>you.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nIt was a demonstration of the radical change that had taken place in him when\nthe Lord Jesus Christ had transformed Ned <span class=SpellE>Nusunginya<\/span>\nfrom a man of hatred, vengeance and continual vitriol to a man who exhibited\nnothing but the<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#192763'>agape<\/span><\/i><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>\n<\/span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>love of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div> \n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=Section1>\n\n<p>\n<span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial'>Ned <span class=SpellE>Nusunginya<\/span>, Musher, Hunter, Whaler,\nTransformed <span class=SpellE>Christian<\/span>&nbsp;Seated with\ninstruments, James Lampe, Howard Andersen, Steve <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span><\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The move of the Holy Spirit in Barrow began to take on\nexhibits and manifestations none of us had ever <span class=SpellE>seen.<\/span>&nbsp;\nOne night there was a huge clamor outside the <span class=SpellE>building.<\/span>&nbsp;\nNightly services had resumed after a hiatus during our absence from Barrow, and\nthis was in the middle of the <span class=SpellE>week.<\/span>&nbsp; The church\nbuilding was packed beyond <span class=SpellE>capacity.<\/span>&nbsp; People\nhad been being baptized in the Holy Spirit in the midst of services and began\nto speak in tongues worshiping the Lord <span class=SpellE>spontaneously.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe heat from so many bodies packed into the place more than offset the fact\nthat the main doors were open to accommodate folks who couldn't get <span\nclass=SpellE>in.<\/span>&nbsp; They stood on the steps to the front of the\nchurch trying to see what was going on.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Those who couldn't see over the heads of people crammed\ninto the entry way decided on another <span class=SpellE>tack.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; They<\/span> took some empty 50-gallon oil drums, laid 2x12\nplanks across them and made themselves an elevated platform on both sides of\nthe church so they could stand up and see through the windows.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Alaska was not yet a state so we had a territorial police\nofficer who made alternate rounds in Barrow (and other communities scattered\nthroughout the arctic) on an exchange basis with a Canadian RCMP officer whose\nduties included <span class=SpellE>Tuktoyaktuk<\/span>, <span class=SpellE>Inuvik<\/span>,\n<span class=SpellE>Aklavik<\/span> and other villages in the western Canadian <span\nclass=SpellE>arctic.<\/span>&nbsp; On the night in question, the noise and\nexcitement was so great surrounding the church that the officer came to check\nthings <span class=SpellE>out.<\/span>&nbsp; Whether the light appeared before\nhe came, or whether it came while he was there, a great shaft of light appeared\nin the sky shining down directly over the church building.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The light was visible for miles around as a manifestation\nof what the Holy Spirit was <span class=SpellE>doing.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nStephen<\/span> <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span>, oldest son of Paul <span\nclass=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span> (go back and read from the Coffee Break archives,<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#192763'>PAUL, THE\nAPOSTLE<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>) had rebelled against the Lord,\nblaming God for the persecution his father had undergone at the hands of people\nscattered throughout the arctic including would-be &quot;<span class=SpellE>Christians.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nSteve was on a caribou hunting trip some 20 miles from Barrow when he saw the\nshaft of <span class=SpellE>light.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Despite<\/span>\nhis long-harbored anger against the Lord and everything &quot;Christian,&quot;\nthere was an instant &quot;knowing&quot; in his being that the Lord was\nbeckoning him.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>His wife, Jane, was in the service that <span\nclass=SpellE>night.<\/span>&nbsp; She had come to know Jesus Christ while her\nhusband was gone on his hunting trip and had been filled with the Holy <span\nclass=SpellE>Spirit.<\/span>&nbsp; She was praying for Stephen's <span\nclass=SpellE>salvation.<\/span>&nbsp; You probably realize this, but one does\nnot cover 20 miles on tundra through snowdrifts with a dog team as though\nthey're driving a snow machine capable of doing 50 or 60 miles an <span\nclass=SpellE>hour.<\/span>&nbsp; I'm not sure Steve ever knew how it happened,\nbut he turned his dog team towards the light and headed towards Barrow as fast\nas he could drive those dogs.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was somewhere between 9:30 and <\/span><st1:time\nHour=\"22\" Minute=\"00\"><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\n mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>10:00 PM<\/span><\/st1:time><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> when he pulled up in front of the church with his team, drove a\nclaw anchor into the ground to keep his dogs from running <span class=SpellE>away.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHe'd made the trip in 90 minutes or <span class=SpellE>thereabouts.<\/span>&nbsp;\nWith absolute determination, he plowed his way through the crowd of people,\nmade his way down to the front of the church and dropped to his knees <span\nclass=SpellE>weeping.<\/span>&nbsp; When he rose to his feet some 30 - 45\nminutes later, the anger and rebellion against God was <span class=SpellE>gone.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHis countenance was changed completely, and he glowed as though radiating inner\nlight from himself.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Stephen had two brothers, Simeon and <span class=SpellE>Billy.<\/span>&nbsp;\nBilly lived in Wainwright where his father still <span class=SpellE>lived.<\/span>&nbsp;\nSimeon lived right next door to the <span class=SpellE>church.<\/span>&nbsp; In\nfact, if you look at the picture above of the church under construction, you'll\nsee a house in the left side of the <span class=SpellE>picture.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat was Simeon's <span class=SpellE>place.<\/span>&nbsp; In fact, it belonged\nto a woman whose husband had died, and Simeon had simply taken up with her\nwithout the benefit of <span class=SpellE>marriage.<\/span>&nbsp; Simeon was a\nfull-blown alcoholic who couldn't even get out bed without first taking a swig\nfrom his bottle of whiskey.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One morning the woman's (her name was Susan) daughter,\nMary, came banging on the door of our place and crying out for <span\nclass=SpellE>help.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; She<\/span> said that Simeon\nhad an axe in hand and was trying to kill her <span class=SpellE>mother.<\/span>&nbsp;\nDad walked over to the house, and as he stepped through the door, Simeon had\nthe axe <span class=SpellE>upraised.<\/span>&nbsp; He turned to swing the axe\nagainst Dad <span class=SpellE>instead.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad stood there, raised\nhis hand toward Simeon and said, &quot;Peace, be still.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The axe dropped to the floor <span class=SpellE>harmlessly.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Simeon<\/span> followed the axe to the floor, falling on his\nknees and <span class=SpellE>crying.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad began to pray softly,\ndeclaring the name and the blood of Jesus over Simeon and over the entire <span\nclass=SpellE>household.<\/span>&nbsp; Before he left the house, Simeon and\nSusan had both received Jesus Christ as their Lord and <span class=SpellE>Saviour.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThey were married soon thereafter.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Both Steve and Simeon <span class=SpellE>Patkotak<\/span>\nbecame integral parts of the church in <span class=SpellE>Barrow.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Both<\/span> were musicians (both of them played the banjo)\nand began playing their instruments in what was quickly becoming a burgeoning\nstring band.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>There is still a lot to tell, and rather than get started\non another story of God's grace today and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit\nthat brought such change to the arctic, let's leave it here for <span\nclass=SpellE>today.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;
