<span class=SpellE>Huh?<\/span>&nbsp;\n<span class=SpellE>Huh?<\/span>&nbsp; Well, we've just had a marvelous <span\nclass=SpellE>week.<\/span>&nbsp; The West Coast Believers' Convention in\nAnaheim, California has got to be the best Believers' Convention <span\nclass=SpellE>yet!<\/span>&nbsp; The revelation that poured out during the week\nwas nothing short of <span class=SpellE>stupendous.<\/span>&nbsp; I took many\npages of notes, and it'll take awhile to digest it all, but ..... <span\nclass=GramE>all<\/span> I can say is, WOW!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>We're going to do this again for the week of August 6-11\nwhen Kenneth Copeland Ministries hosts the Southwest Believers' Convention from\nFort <span class=SpellE>Worth.<\/span>&nbsp; We will carry the convention live\nagain here at River Worship <span class=SpellE>Center.<\/span>&nbsp; I'll\nremind you again as we approach the <span class=SpellE>date.<\/span>&nbsp; Then\nDella and I will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Great Lakes Believers'\nConvention August 20-25.\u00c2&nbsp; We will be set up to carry it here at River\nWorship Center as well, but someone else will be responsible for setting up the\nfeed.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>If the theme of the Anaheim convention carries through the\nother conventions as well, the teaching and sharing will revolve around the\ntopics of Increase, the Abundant Life, and Unwavering <span class=SpellE>Faith.<\/span>&nbsp;\nAlthough none of the speakers at the Anaheim convention had compared notes\nbeforehand, it was clear that the Holy Spirit was orchestrating things in such\na way that each successive speaker and each successive message built upon the\nprevious <span class=SpellE>teaching.<\/span>&nbsp; Many hundreds of people\ncame to know Jesus Christ for the first time, and I've no idea how many people\nreceived physical, mental and emotional <span class=SpellE>healing.<\/span>&nbsp;\nWhat a flow of the Spirit!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Well, it's time for us to get back to our discussion on\nthe adventures in faith I lived through (and was a part of) watching my Dad and\nMom consistently and persistently obey God as churches and missions were\nfounded throughout the <\/span><st1:place><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\n font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Arctic<\/span><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'>.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>We've got some of that organic dark roasted Columbian <span\nclass=SpellE>Supremo<\/span> in the French Press <span class=SpellE>today.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; (or, as we more often referred to it back then, &quot;the\nstates.&quot;)&nbsp; We had (and still have to this day) a number of relatives\nliving in the northwest, and after spending some time with them and catching\nthem up on the vision for Barrow, we headed to Salt Lake City for a family <span\nclass=SpellE>reunion.<\/span>&nbsp; There are two major (and quite separate)\nbranches of the <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span> family in the United States.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>We refer to them as either coming from &quot;John&quot;\n(my great-great grandfather) or &quot;William&quot; (his brother).<span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; The<\/span> two brothers came to the United States in\n1836.&nbsp; Whatever provoked the disagreement back then is not really quite\nclear, but William parted ways with John and joined Brigham Young to organize\nthe westward movement of the Mormons from Nauvoo, <span class=SpellE>Illinois.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe result is that we have a large number of Mormon relatives in the U.S.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>For nearly a hundred years, the two branches of the family\nscarcely knew of the existence of each <span class=SpellE>other.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Dad's<\/span> brother, Everett, stumbled onto the Mormon\nbranch of the family during a stopover in <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Salt Lake City<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> when he was in the Air <span class=SpellE>Force.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIt led to the first major family reunion of the two branches of the family.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Finally, we headed <span class=SpellE>eastward.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; With<\/span> my brother and I needing to be in school, Mom\nand Dad decided we needed to stay put in one place while they traveled, and we\nwound up staying on a farm just outside of Hot Springs, Arkansas with a family\nwho provided temporary housing and oversight for the children of missionaries\nand folks in ministry while they &quot;itinerated.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In the late Spring of 1954, with school out for my brother\nand I, travel resumed for <span class=SpellE>us.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad and Mom had\nbeen traveling on the east coast in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and\nConnecticut, and when they picked us up, we headed back toward the west <span\nclass=SpellE>coast.<\/span>&nbsp; Enough money had been contributed towards the\nbuilding of the church in Barrow that Dad went ahead and ordered the building\nmaterials and had them delivered to the docks in <span class=SpellE>Seattle.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHoward, my brother, and I helped Dad strap and band the lumber for loading on\nthe North Star freighter -- the one ship that makes its way through the\nice-laden waters of the Arctic Ocean to Barrow with supplies, and only once a\nyear.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Howard Andersen, a Swedish evangelist who had made his\nhome in <\/span><st1:place><st1:City><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\n  Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Stamford<\/span><\/st1:City><span\n style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n color:#663300'>, <\/span><st1:State><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\n  Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>Connecticut<\/span><\/st1:State><\/st1:place><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#663300'> (and met Dad and Mom while they were itinerating there) met us\nin <span class=SpellE>Seattle.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> and <span\nclass=SpellE>Lew<\/span> Welker (a <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Houston<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> oil\ncompany executive) joined Dad for the trip to Barrow, and stayed with him\nthrough the first phase of construction of the church.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div> \n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=Section1>\n\n<p><span class=GramE>\n<span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial'>From a grainy newsmagazine photo, the foundations\nof the church in Barrow.<\/span><\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Tom Brower, who was the son of the famous whaler, Charles\nBrower, provided an old military 4x4 weapons carrier, a 1942 Dodge fitted with\ntires from a Douglas DC-3 airplane to provide flotation on the tundra and\nswampy ground, and Dad -- along with Howard Andersen and <span class=SpellE>Lew<\/span>\nWelker, and a few conscripted locals -- hauled gravel from the beach to provide\nsome fill for the swampy ground in the middle of town Dad had chosen for the\nchurch <span class=SpellE>site.<\/span>&nbsp; It required more than 200 loads\nof gravel before the ground was firm enough to support a <span class=SpellE>building.<\/span>&nbsp;\nTemperatures were already below freezing and water was poured on the ground to\nprovide a base that was like concrete.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>As the photo above shows, sinking piling in the ground\nwasn't practical, so three-foot square pads were constructed out of 2x12's with\n12x12 timbers cut to provide the support for the building's flooring <span\nclass=SpellE>structure.<\/span>&nbsp; When the building was sufficiently far\nalong in construction, siding was added around the open area under the <span\nclass=SpellE>building.<\/span>&nbsp; Enclosed, the ground would -- except under\nunusual conditions such as those that occurred when Barrow saw record high\ntemperatures in 1979 (in the 70's) -- never thaw out.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>You'll better appreciate this methodology when you realize\nthat Barrow, which is only 1100 miles from the North Pole, has an average\nsummer temperature of 39 degrees, and an annual mean temperature of about ten\nto fifteen degrees below <span class=SpellE>zero.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nHaving<\/span> an average summer temperature of 39 degrees doesn't mean you\ndon't get warm days in the 50's and 60's, but those readings only last for a\nfew hours at a time.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Meanwhile, Mom, Howard and I hit the road again for more\nitinerating and sharing the vision for Barrow with churches throughout the <span\nclass=SpellE>northwest.<\/span>&nbsp; After making the rounds of a few more\nchurches in Idaho, we headed into <span class=SpellE>Wyoming.<\/span>&nbsp; Not\nlong out of Cody on what is now U.S. Highway 14 headed towards Sheridan, the\nfront end of that old 1947 Ford came <span class=SpellE>apart.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe highway was narrow and winding through the Big Horn <span class=SpellE>Mountains.<\/span>&nbsp;\nWe were up at something like 10,000 <span class=SpellE>feet.<\/span>&nbsp; In\nthose days, there were no guardrails and the road often had little in the way\nof a <span class=SpellE>shoulder.<\/span>&nbsp; Some places there were sheer\ndrops of hundreds and even more than a thousand feet right off the roadway.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When the steering linkage came apart, Mom lost control of\nthe <span class=SpellE>car.<\/span>&nbsp; Mom, <span class=SpellE>Howie<\/span>\nand I all hollered, &quot;JESUS!!&quot; at the same <span class=SpellE>time.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThe car whipped around with the back tires dropping over a <span class=SpellE>ledge.<\/span>&nbsp;\nAs the centrifugal force of the car's sideways spin took it around, the tires\ncaught the ledge and flipped the <span class=SpellE>car.<\/span>&nbsp; We\nrolled over three times before landing on all fours on the opposite side of the\n<span class=SpellE>highway.<\/span>&nbsp; The car was <span class=SpellE>totaled.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHad the car somersaulted to the other side of the highway instead, we wouldn't\nbe here to talk about <span class=SpellE>it.<\/span>&nbsp; It was the\nprotection of the Lord that kept us from going off a sheer drop of many\nhundreds of feet.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Other than a lot of glass in our hair and a few minor\nscratches from the flying glass, I was the only one to suffer any broken <span\nclass=SpellE>bones.<\/span>&nbsp; My left wrist was broken in several places\nfrom the impact of hitting the dash while we were playing &quot;spin (or flip)\nthe <span class=SpellE>car.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp; We were able to kick open the\npassenger side door and get <span class=SpellE>out.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nIt<\/span> was only a few minutes before another car came <span class=SpellE>along.<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat in itself was remarkable since we hadn't seen another car on the road for\nwhat seemed <span class=SpellE>hours.<\/span>&nbsp; The couple who were driving\nthat car picked us up and took us into Sheridan (Sheridan had been our\ndestination, anyway) and to the local hospital where my wrist was put in a\ncast.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The State Police arranged for our wrecked car to be hauled\ninto Sheridan where we took out all of our personal <span class=SpellE>belongings.<\/span>&nbsp;\nFollowing our church service in Sheridan the following night, we boarded a\ntrain for Chicago, and on to Madison, Wisconsin where my grandparents had\nreturned after some time in <span class=SpellE>California.<\/span>&nbsp; Not\nhaving a car rather complicated things, so Grandpa took us to the local\nChevrolet dealer where they had a brand new (albeit a demonstrator with about\n800 miles on it) 1954 Chevrolet they were willing to sell us for $1,000.&nbsp;\nIt was a bargain price -- even in those days -- but it took much of the cash on\nhand Mom had received toward the paying for the materials for the church in\nBarrow.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>That meant we had to do some more travel -- quite a bit,\nin fact -- and we wound up traveling throughout the entire state of Wisconsin\nand then on to Michigan and Northern Michigan over a period of months, sharing\nin church after church after church after church after church, ad infinitum.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was late Spring of 1955 when we knew our travels were <span\nclass=SpellE>complete.<\/span>&nbsp; Enough money had come in to pay the bills\nfor the building supplies, a year's supply of basic foodstuffs (dried and\ncanned goods only, flour, sugar, etc.) and pay for our return to <span\nclass=SpellE>Alaska.<\/span>&nbsp; We arrived in Barrow in time for the opening\nof the church.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The first Sunday the doors were open was a considerably\ndifferent experience from the startup in <span class=SpellE>Nome.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Nome<\/span> had been tough sledding (pun intended) from the\nget-<span class=SpellE>go.<\/span>&nbsp; It had taken nine years to build a\nsolid family of believers and make a difference in <span class=SpellE>Nome.<\/span>&nbsp;\nFrom the day the doors of the church opened in Barrow, the place was packed to\ncapacity.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad had built the church auditorium to seat perhaps a\nhundred people reasonably and <span class=SpellE>comfortably.<\/span>&nbsp; <span\nclass=SpellE>Right.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;Reasonable and comfortable&quot; were\nnot terms those folks were thinking <span class=SpellE>in.<\/span>&nbsp; My\nrecollection is that Dad counted 174 people crammed into the <span\nclass=SpellE>place.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;Crammed&quot; is exactly what they <span\nclass=SpellE>were.<\/span>&nbsp; Bench seats designed to hold 10 to 12 people\nwere holding from 16 to 20.&nbsp; When every seat filled, people lined up\nstanding around the back, then around the sides, then sitting on the floor in\nthe aisles, then sitting on the floor in front right up to the altar benches.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>It was just a tad different than Dad had been <span\nclass=SpellE>expecting.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; When<\/span> he gave his\nfirst altar call for salvation, people literally had to crawl over each other\nin order to make it to the front, and wound up on the <span class=SpellE>platform.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI do not remember how many people responded that first service, but before that\nfirst week was out, there were more than a hundred people who had accepted\nJesus Christ for the first time in their lives, and many of them were baptized\nin the Holy Spirit.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Many extraordinary &quot;Acts Chapter 2&quot; experiences\nbegan to <span class=SpellE>occur.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; For<\/span>\ntime's sake today, I'll save those stories for our next Coffee Break.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The first Monday morning after that first Sunday service,\npeople came over to ask if we could have services every <span class=SpellE>night.<\/span>&nbsp;\nNight after night, week after week, month after month, we were having <span\nclass=SpellE>services.<\/span>&nbsp; It would be inaccurate to say that every\nsingle service was packed to capacity, and the newness of &quot;another\nchurch&quot; in Barrow began to wear <span class=SpellE>off.<\/span>&nbsp;\nNevertheless, for all practical purposes the church was mostly full every\nsingle <span class=SpellE>night.<\/span>&nbsp; Construction hadn't been\nfinished on the living quarters yet, but by the time it reached the finishing,\nit was apparent that the church simply wasn't large enough to accommodate the\nincreasing numbers.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>During this period of time, the Lord brought into our\nlives a Texas preacher who would eventually become the means by which literally\nhundreds of churches throughout Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma would\nbecome involved and share the burden for the ministry that was unfolding in the\n<span class=SpellE>arctic.<\/span>&nbsp; Lonnie Mullen was the pastor of a\nchurch on the north side of <span class=SpellE>Dallas.<\/span>&nbsp; He'd heard\nabout the ministry of the <span class=SpellE>Capeners<\/span> in the north and\ndecided to take advantage of a hunting trip to Alaska to travel all the way to\nBarrow and check things out for <span class=SpellE>himself.<\/span>&nbsp; When\nhe saw what the Lord was doing, the Holy Spirit fired him up with an enthusiasm\nand an excitement to become financially <span class=SpellE>involved.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIn the years to come, he called upon numerous pastors and opened doors of\nopportunity and utterance so that Dad and Mom could share both the vision and\nthe burden of the Lord for the north country.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p>\n<span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad began working on a redesign of the building\nthat would more than double its size, increase the auditorium size by 50%, add\nrooms for Sunday School facilities and enlarge the living quarters, which were\nmeager at <span class=SpellE>best.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; By<\/span>\nthe late spring of 1957 arrangements had been made for Paul and Marguerite\nBills to fill in for us while we began traveling once again in churches\nthroughout the &quot;states&quot; to share the vision and the need for the\nexpansion of the church in Barrow.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The opportunity came along to purchase a Jeep with an\nextended rear-<span class=SpellE>end.<\/span>&nbsp; My brother and I helped Dad\nbuild a box shell on the back similar to a small camper shell so that the\nvehicle could be used to haul <span class=SpellE>things.<\/span>&nbsp; We drove\nback to North Dakota to Uncle Roy's sheep ranch (I talked about him in the\nCoffee Break titled,<\/span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#005500'>SHEPHERDS\n&amp; SHEEPHERDERS<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:\nGaramond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>) where he had a\nhundred-foot tower and a <span class=SpellE>Wincharger<\/span> wind <span\nclass=SpellE>generator.<\/span>&nbsp; We dismantled that generator and tower,\nstrapped the 10-foot tower section pieces (we had it broken down completely) to\nthe top of the box, and put the smaller pieces and generator inside the box so\nit could be hauled up the Alaska Highway and flown to Barrow.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Until such time as a highway gets constructed from\nFairbanks to Barrow (other than the temporary winter ice roads made across the\nmany lakes that dot the Arctic Slope) the only way to get anything into Barrow\nother than by the North Star ship is by <span class=SpellE>air.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Vehicles<\/span> are loaded into cargo aircraft (in those\ndays, it was a C-124) such as a Hercules and flown north.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>The wind generator would provide us with cheap electrical\npower once installed and take advantage of the winds that blow pretty regularly\nin the arctic.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>During the summer months of 1957, we traveled mostly\nthroughout Wisconsin and Michigan as a family, while Dad and Mom shared in\nnumerous churches the developments that had taken place in Barrow, and the\nmarvelous work of the Holy Spirit that was unfolding in the <span class=SpellE>arctic.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp;
