I<\/span> trust the reading\nof this piece will be as fascinating for you as Charles Brower's book was for\nme.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Let's <span class=SpellE>see.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nWhat<\/span> do we have in the French Press <span class=SpellE>today?<\/span>&nbsp;\nOh, <span class=SpellE>yeah.<\/span>&nbsp; Double Roasted French blended with a\nbit of robust <span class=SpellE>Sulawesi.<\/span>&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Hey!<\/span>&nbsp;\nThat'll light up your <span class=SpellE>eyeballs.<\/span>&nbsp; Picked up some\nof those cinnamon rolls from Mrs. <span class=SpellE>Cinnabon's<\/span> <span\nclass=SpellE>too.<\/span>&nbsp; They're not really as good as Eileen's, but I'm\ngoing to get some of Eileen's in a couple of weeks -- I hope!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>In Part 3 of the series titled,<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>ALVIN\nCAPENER<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'>, I scanned lightly over the events\nthat followed the stupendous fishing miracle, but alluded to some phenomenal\nevents that transpired during the building of the churches and establishing of\nministries throughout the <span class=SpellE>arctic.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nWe<\/span> really need to pick up with our arrival in <\/span><st1:City><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Nome<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:City><span style='font-size:13.5pt;\nfont-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> in November,\n1944.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One detail that I erred in was that we spent the winter of\n1944 getting established in Nome -- not actually building the new church <span\nclass=SpellE>building.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; I<\/span> realized after\nI'd already published Part 3 that the Alaska Steamship's last sailing for Nome\nwould have been in September, and there simply wouldn't have been enough time\nfor Dad to have gotten the supplies on the ship to build that fall.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad did secure a piece of property on the main road that\ncame into Nome from what was then March Air Force Base, roughly a city block\nfrom the Nome Public <span class=SpellE>School.<\/span>&nbsp; The spring and\nearly summer of 1945 were spent preparing the ground for building the <span\nclass=SpellE>church.<\/span>&nbsp; Construction in the far north has always\nbeen an interesting <span class=SpellE>proposition.<\/span>&nbsp; Either you\nuse a hot steam rig to thaw the ground sufficiently to drive piling in anywhere\nfrom six to nine feet (more in some places), or -- if you are on the arctic\ncoast -- prepare a set of pads approximately three feet square laminated out of\n2 X 12's, and put your foundation posts on those pads, on top the <span\nclass=SpellE>ground.<\/span>&nbsp; (That's the way we built in Barrow,\nWainwright, Point Hope and Barter Island -- and later at <span class=SpellE>Nuiqsut<\/span>\nand <span class=SpellE>Atqasuk<\/span>.)<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>I was shy of my fourth birthday when construction of the\nchurch began in Nome, so I got to watch -- NOT swing a <span class=SpellE>hammer.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Hehehehehe<\/span><\/span>.......&nbsp;\nThe building supplies -- along with a year's supply of groceries (basic\nstaples, of course, not fresh food) -- arrived by Alaska Steamship in late July\nor early <span class=SpellE>August.<\/span>&nbsp; Dad had one or two helpers\nfrom the community who weren't really carpenters, but they were able to help\nhim swing foundation timbers into place and help get the basic flooring in\nplace.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Building a church in Nome, Alaska in the 1940's meant a\nlot of improvising and coming up with ways to keep costs down while still\ncoming up with a structure that would withstand the <span class=SpellE>elements.<\/span>&nbsp;\nDad decided to do something that -- so far as he knew -- had never been done <span\nclass=SpellE>before.<\/span>&nbsp; He'd seen brick construction, of course,\nwith the staggered bricks which provided strength and stability to <span\nclass=SpellE>walls.<\/span>&nbsp; With WWII just coming to an end, certain\nbuilding supplies were in short <span class=SpellE>supply.<\/span>&nbsp; What\nwas plentiful were 2 X 4's.&nbsp; So Dad decided on brick-like construction\nusing 2 X 4's and laminating them together as he <span class=SpellE>went.<\/span>&nbsp;\nIt provided virtually air-tight walls.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>One <span class=SpellE>problem.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nWhen<\/span> there are just two or perhaps three people working, your\nconstruction project doesn't move along at breakneck <span class=SpellE>speed.<\/span>&nbsp;\nTime was of the essence in getting the building up before the snow began to <span\nclass=SpellE>fly.<\/span>&nbsp; The roof had to be tarred to make it\nwater-proof, but you can't pour and spread tar in freezing <span class=SpellE>temperatures.<\/span>&nbsp;\nHe had a very few weeks at most to get the building up, enclosed, and the roof\ntarred.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>With the flooring in place, the month of August nearing an\nend, and snow expected by mid-September, he faced a humanly-impossible <span\nclass=SpellE>task.<\/span>&nbsp; A transport with a half-dozen soldiers from\nMarch Air Force Base (<i>in those days, airmen were part of the U. S. Army Air\nForce: it wasn't separated from the Army and called the Air Force until 1947<\/i>)\nwere driving by one afternoon on <span class=SpellE>break.<\/span>&nbsp; They'd\nbeen to the local taverns and were feeling no <span class=SpellE>pain.<\/span>&nbsp;\nSeeing Alvin <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span> working on this church building,\nthey decided to stop and offer assistance.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Smelling the alcohol on them didn't particularly lend\ntheir offer any real credence, but Dad was <span class=SpellE>undaunted.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; &quot;<\/span>Do any of you have carpentry experience?&quot;\nhe asked.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>&quot;Sure,&quot; they <span class=SpellE>replied.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; &quot;<\/span>That's what we are doing at March Air Force <span\nclass=SpellE>Base.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Wow<span class=GramE>!<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\nJust like <span class=SpellE>that!<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;We're due back and have\nto report for duty, but we'll be here tomorrow to help,&quot; they said.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>You know how it is with people who are <span class=SpellE>alcoholics?<\/span>&nbsp;\nWhen they're inebriated, they often say things they'll promptly <span\nclass=SpellE>forget.<\/span>&nbsp; These guys were <span class=SpellE>soused.<\/span>&nbsp;\nDad had no idea if he'd see them again, but sure enough, they showed up the\nnext morning, tools in hand.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Their commanding officer, Air Force Colonel Marvin &quot;<span\nclass=SpellE>Muktuk<\/span>&quot; <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span>, was a\nlegend in his own <span class=SpellE>right.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;\nHe'd<\/span> been a miner in northern Ontario, moved to the U.S. and enlisted to\nfight in WWI.&nbsp; His record in WWI was one of distinction, but also of <span\nclass=SpellE>controversy.<\/span>&nbsp; He was known as a &quot;doer, not a\ntalker,&quot; and frequently cut corners to get things done.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>When Ernest <span class=SpellE>Gruening<\/span> became the\nTerritorial Governor of Alaska, he'd heard of <span class=SpellE>Marston's<\/span>\nexploits (though theoretically retired from the military, <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span>\nhad re-enlisted to fight in WWII, and his familiarity with arctic conditions\ncommended him to <span class=SpellE>Gruening<\/span>) and lobbied in 1939 to get\n<span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span> assigned to put together a &quot;tundra\nArmy&quot; using native <span class=SpellE>Eskimos.<\/span>&nbsp; The success\nof that &quot;Scout Battalion&quot; became <span class=SpellE>legendary.<\/span>&nbsp;\nWhen his military superiors were slow in providing them with rifles, <span\nclass=SpellE>Marston<\/span> commandeered a dog team and drove that team under\ninhuman conditions to Fort Richardson, got the rifles himself and returned --\nagain, by dog team -- through blizzard conditions to Alaska's western coast to\nsupply his men with rifles.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>This story isn't supposed to be about Marvin <span\nclass=SpellE>Marston<\/span>, but if you want some fascinating reading, go to: <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.alaskool.org\/projects\/ak_military\/men_of_tundra\/men_of_tundra.htm\"\ntarget=\"_top\">http:\/\/www.alaskool.org\/projects\/ak_military\/men_of_tundra\/men_of_tundra.htm<\/a>.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>My point is that Colonel <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span>\ncame driving past the construction site where Dad was directing these\nsoldier-carpenters a day (or perhaps a couple of days) after they'd begun <span\nclass=SpellE>helping.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;What the ____ are you doing?&quot; he\n<span class=SpellE>said.<\/span>&nbsp; (<span class=SpellE>Marston's<\/span>\nspeech was always peppered with colorful metaphors!)<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad walked over and <span class=SpellE>explained.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span><\/span> began to <span\nclass=SpellE>hee-haw.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;You're going to build this church and\nhave it enclosed by the time the snow <span class=SpellE>flies?&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;\nAlready being versed in having command of the weather, Dad made a bold\ndeclaration -- a prophecy, if you <span class=SpellE>will.<\/span>&nbsp;\n&quot;The Lord has been with us in this endeavor all the way,&quot; he said,\n&quot;and the snow will not fly until we have this building enclosed and the\nroof tarred.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>&quot;Well I'll be ___ _____, <span class=GramE>&quot; he<\/span>\n<span class=SpellE>exploded.<\/span>&nbsp; &quot;You're NEVER going to make\nthat <span class=SpellE>goal.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp; He stopped for a minute, then\n<span class=SpellE>resumed.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; &quot;<\/span>Even\nif I were to assign these men the task of helping you see this to conclusion,\nit's simply not <span class=SpellE>possible!<\/span>&nbsp; There's too much to\ndo, and too little time before the snow flies.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad repeated <span class=SpellE>himself.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; &quot;<\/span>The snow will not fly until we have this\nbuilding enclosed.&quot;<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Though he never talked much about it, and I don't recall\nhis ever preaching on it, he clearly understood the authority of the <span\nclass=SpellE>believer.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> KNEW without\nquestion that when God orders something, He stands behind it 100%.&nbsp; That\nmeans that whatever you have to do, and whatever you have to say to implement\nthe authority and power of God to accomplish what He's given you, you do it!<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad frequently quoted Hebrews 10:38:<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> <\/span><b><i><span\nstyle='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\ncolor:#005500'>&quot;Now the just shall live by faith, but if any <span\nclass=GramE>man draw<\/span> back, my soul shall have no pleasure in <span\nclass=SpellE>him.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> Faith\nwasn't some mysterious, ethereal religious thing to him: it was nothing more\ncomplicated than believing whatever God says and then acting on <span\nclass=SpellE>it.<\/span>&nbsp; That's exactly how Alvin <span class=SpellE>Capener<\/span>\nlived and worked.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>&quot;Right,&quot; said <span class=SpellE>Marston.<\/span>&nbsp;\n&quot;Tell you what I'm <span class=SpellE>gonna<\/span> <span class=SpellE>do.<\/span>&nbsp;\nI'm assigning these soldiers to stay with you until the snow <span\nclass=SpellE>flies.<\/span>&nbsp; I dare you to complete this construction in\nthat <span class=SpellE>time.<\/span>&nbsp; You've only got days -- maybe two\nweeks at most before the snow flies, and more than a month's worth of work to <span\nclass=SpellE>finish.<\/span>&nbsp; That<\/span> building went together in record <span\nclass=SpellE>time.<\/span>&nbsp; Those six soldiers were there every single day\nlike clockwork, working from sunup to sundown.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div> \n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=Section1>\n\n<p>\n<o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>\u00c2&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Marston's<\/span> men, Dad &amp;\nMe in front of our temporary &quot;home.<span class=GramE>&quot;.<\/span> The\nchurch in the summer of 1946 with the siding finished.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Dad had to wait until the following summer to put siding\non the building, but the church was open and worship services were being\nconducted that winter of 1945-1946.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Our family often talked about the way that God took\nadvantage of Colonel <span class=SpellE>Marston's<\/span> <span class=SpellE>dare.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; He<\/span> had enough brass and guts to keep his word --\nnever mind if it fit within the framework his command of the forces in western <span\nclass=SpellE>Alaska.\u00c2<\/span>&nbsp; <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span> was a bold,\ndaring individual, and his lack of concern for strict military protocol often\ncrossed swords with his superior officers, but he was there strategically at a\ncritical moment in time.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Those soldiers who worked so hard with Dad took <span\nclass=SpellE>Marston's<\/span> dare as a personal challenge to them and their <span\nclass=SpellE>abilities.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp; Before<\/span> it was\nover, Dad had led most, if not all of them, to a personal commitment to Jesus <span\nclass=SpellE>Christ.<\/span>&nbsp; Two of those men maintained their contact\nwith Dad and Mom for many years thereafter, even after we had left Nome and\nheaded to Barrow.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>Despite the Colonel's often cross-wise nature with the\nmilitary command, God honored him in the years that followed, and Colonel\nMarvin &quot;<span class=SpellE>Muktuk<\/span>&quot; <span class=SpellE>Marston<\/span>\neventually became Brigadier General <span class=SpellE>Marston.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; Schools<\/span> and government facilities throughout <\/span><st1:State><st1:place><span\n  style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;\n  color:#663300'>Alaska<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:State><span style='font-size:\n13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:Arial;color:#663300'> bear his\nname to this day.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>On Wednesday, I'll share with you some of the stories of\nindividuals whose lives were changed by that first ministry that Dad &amp; Mom\npioneered -- people who went on thereafter in their own right to become\ninfluential in bringing change to Alaska's landscape and setting the stage for\na move of the Holy Spirit in the years to <span class=SpellE>follow.<\/span><span\nclass=GramE>&nbsp; That<\/span> move of the Spirit would easily rival anything\nyou'll read in the book of Acts.<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n\n<p><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Garamond;mso-bidi-font-family:\nArial;color:#663300'>We'll keep today's Coffee Break a bit shorter than <span\nclass=SpellE>some.<\/span><span class=GramE>&nbsp;
