the Paths of Righteousness through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I\nwill fear no evil: for Thou Art With Me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort\nme.<span class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\nstaff has traditionally been representative of guidance, but both Hebrew and\nGreek texts apply the use of the staff to represent support of every kind.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Throughout Scripture, we see the use of the\nstaff mentioned 42 times.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We see bread\nrepresented as \u201cthe staff of life.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Bread, therefore, is the sustainer \u2014 that which supports life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>In\nGenesis 38, we have the story of Judah and Tamar.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Without getting into all the specifics of\nthat story, in a secret liaison in which Judah is unaware of Tamar\u2019s identity\n(she is actually his daughter-in-law), Tamar becomes pregnant with twins.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>She is accused of playing the whore and brought\nbefore Judah for judgment.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Judah,\non the other hand, has given up his signet ring (the symbol of his authority),\nhis bracelets (the symbol of his wealth) and his staff in order to spend the\nevening with Tamar.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His staff is more\nthan just his support in a natural sense, it is his legal support, and it is\nrepresentative of the guidance of the Lord in his life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>This\nstory is one that I was given the opportunity to witness firsthand during my\njourneys back and forth through time in 1996 as directed by the Lord, and\naccompanied by an angel of the Lord.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>When\nTamar is brought before Judah for his judgment (by law, she could have been\nstoned to death had she actually been plying herself and her body for personal\ngain), Judah is incensed that his daughter-in-law is pregnant, her most recent\nhusband having been dead for some years.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>He is about to pronounce sentence on Tamar when she presents him with\nhis signet ring, his bracelets and his staff.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Judah\nhas no legal support to pronounce sentence upon Tamar, and realizes that he has\nfailed her in his role as her father-in-law.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>When Judah\u2019s first two sons had married Tamar in succession and each of\nthem died under the judgment of God because of their mistreatment of Tamar and\ntheir in-your-face rebellion against God, Judah had promised his third son to\nTamar when he became of age, but feared that the same fate would befall him.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Instead,\nat the appointed time, Judah married his third son off to someone else, leaving\nTamar a grieving widow.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>There is not\ntime or space to get into the entire story in this discussion, but I have\nwritten and documented the entire event as a first-hand witness in a book to be\npublished when the Lord so orchestrates.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>It is a phenomenal story of the grace and love of the Lord in the most\ntrying circumstances.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>What\nthis story illustrates, as far the staff is concerned, is its representation\nmetaphorically for natural support, legal support, and the future guidance of\nthe Lord for events to come in the not-too-distant future.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Sorry,\nI ought to save this for later, but I can\u2019t resist showing you how this all\nunfolds.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Tamar\ngives birth to two sons, Pharez and Zarah.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Pharez\u2019 great grandson, Amminidab, is one of the two spies that Joseph\nsends into Jericho.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He is the rescuer of\nRahab, and marries her in due time.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Rahab becomes great-grandmother to Boaz, who marries Ruth, and becomes\nthe grandfather of Jesse, the father of David, King of Israel, and progenitor\nof both Joseph and Mary through different strands of the family.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>You\njust can\u2019t make this stuff up!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Judah\u2019s\nstaff was integral to all of this unfolding.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Now, perhaps, you can see why David could see the staff as something\ncomforting to him as he followed the Lord in the Paths of Righteousness.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It was integral to his very existence, and it\nwas integral to his life as a shepherd.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>You\nwill also remember that the instruction of the Lord to Israel on Passover night\nwent like this:<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><b><u><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Exodus\n12:11<\/span><\/u><\/b><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>:<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";color:#A50021'>And thus shall ye eat\nit; <i>with<\/i> your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in\nyour hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it <i>is<\/i> the LORD\u2019S Passover.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Israel\nwas instructed to take the staff with them as they departed Egypt because they\nwere going to need it for both support (when they wearied in the long walk) and\nfor the guidance of the Lord that would go before them as they departed the\nland.<span style='color:black'><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Now,\nlet\u2019s take a look at the staff from another perspective.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Roy\nArcher was my grandfather\u2019s cousin, but we all knew him as \u201cUncle Roy.\u201d<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Uncle Roy was, in every sense of the word, a\nshepherd.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>(We\u2019ve already made the\ndistinction between a sheep rancher or sheep-herder and a shepherd.)<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In the late 1950\u2019s, my brother and I went with\nDad to visit his spread in North Dakota.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Uncle\nRoy had an old 32-volt wind generator that he had ceased to use, (with an\nadaptor, it would work for 120 volts) and when he learned that we were living\nin the arctic without electricity, he offered the generator to Dad.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We had to dismantle the tower and generator,\nof course, and haul it up the Alaska Highway, but that\u2019s another story.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>As\nI\u2019ve said, Uncle Roy was a shepherd.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He\nled his sheep to pasture.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He didn\u2019t have\na sheep dog to chase them.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The sheep\nfollowed him wherever he went, and when he stopped or sat down, they began to\nfeed in the green pastures.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>There\nwas this one sheep that went with him everywhere he went.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, the sheep walked so close to him\nthat it rubbed up against his leg.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When\nhe would come in from the fields, Uncle Roy would head into his back porch. <span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span>I laughed one day when the sheep walked into\nthe porch with him.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span leave your side, and it goes with you everywhere.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It even wants to follow you into the house\nlike a pet.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He\nlaughed and said, \u201cI have a story to tell you about this sheep.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cYears\nago,\u201d he said, \u201cwhen this sheep was a little lamb, he was always wandering off\nfrom the flock and getting himself into trouble.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Every so often, I had to retrieve him from\nplaces where he was stuck and couldn\u2019t get out.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cOne\nday, when I wasn\u2019t paying close attention, he got himself caught in a bush \u2014\nand it was a good thing!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Had the bush\nnot caught him and stopped him, he would have fallen over a ledge and likely\nkilled himself.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I had taken a special\nliking to this lamb and didn\u2019t want him to get killed by his wanderings away\nfrom the safety of the flock, so when the lamb was retrieved from the bush, I\ntook my staff and laid it across his front legs.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cI\nstruck his legs just hard enough to crack them so that he could no longer\nwalk.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>From that moment, I carried him\nuntil his legs healed and he could walk again on his own.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When he began walking on his own, he wouldn\u2019t\nleave my side.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>By my carrying him, he\nlearned that I loved him.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He felt my\nlove and heard my heartbeat as I carried him.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span style='font-size:13.0pt;\nfont-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cFrom\nthat time until now, he has always walked by my side.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>When we walk together to the pastures, the\nother sheep follow, and he never strays from my side.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He sets the example for all the other sheep.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>It\nwas a living example of the staff for me, and it was a living example of how\nDavid led his sheep.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I clearly saw the\npicture of \u201c<\/span><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT Condensed\",\"serif\";\ncolor:#A50021'>For Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me<\/span><span\nstyle='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201d in living\ncolor.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Roy Archer\u2019s example was a\ndemonstration of the staff of leading, the staff of support, and the staff of\ncorrection.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>It could not have been\nclearer, and that picture has stayed with me for my whole life.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>There\nis another aspect of the staff that I want to show you.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve already mentioned the staff as being a\nsymbol of leading and guidance, but within that framework, the staff is also a\npicture of the prophetic.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>We\ndon\u2019t have time to get into the whole story here, but consider Gideon\u2019s\nexperiences and what he was going through.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Israel is under bondage from the Midianites.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Gideon has been crying out to the Lord for\ndeliverance and asking God why He doesn\u2019t send a deliverer to Israel.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>So the Lord sends an angel who goes and sits\nunder a tree next to the winepress where Gideon was threshing wheat. <span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0<\/span>The winepress, of course, was not a normal\nplace to thresh wheat but it was a concealed place from the Midianites.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>The\nangel of the Lord appears to Gideon and announces to him, \u201cThe Lord is with\nyou, you mighty man of valor.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>Right!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Gideon couldn\u2019t have felt\nless like a mighty man.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>He\nagain complains to the Lord saying, \u201cIf the Lord is with us, why then has all\nof these things happened to us?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Where\u2019s\nall the miracles that took place with Moses and Joshua?<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Didn\u2019t the Lord deliver us from Egypt?<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>How come He has delivered us into the hand of\nthe Midianites?\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And\nthe angel of the Lord says to him again, \u201cGo in this your might, and you will\nsave Israel out of the hand of the Midianites; haven\u2019t I sent you to do this?\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Gideon\nconsiders himself in much the same way that Moses did when the Lord first\ncalled him to deliver Israel from Pharaoh and Egypt.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWho am I that I should be the one to do\nthis?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>We are a poor family, and I\u2019m the\nleast in my father\u2019s house.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And again\nthe angel of the Lord responds, \u201cSurely, I will be with you, and you will smite\nthe Midianites as one man.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Gideon\nis really struggling now with all of this and says, \u201cIf I have found grace in\nyour sight, then show me a sign that you\u2019ve talked with me (and this is all\nreal)!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Stay here.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t leave until I come back and bring a\npresent unto you.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>So\nGideon goes and roasts a lamb, makes some broth and bakes some cakes.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>(Wonder how long all of this took?)<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Next, he brings it out to where the angel of\nthe Lord is sitting under the oak tree and presented his gift.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Now the angel instructs him to do something\nreally strange!<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>\u201cSee\nthis rock?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Take the meat and the cakes\nand set them on this rock.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Pour the\nbroth out over it.\u201d<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>And Gideon obeys.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Now\nwe are going to see the prophetic implications of the Staff unfold in front of\nGideon.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Gideon has been told that he is\ngoing to be Israel\u2019s deliverer.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>The odds\nagainst his being chosen are astronomical.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0\n<\/span>But the Lord is going to demonstrate the supernatural.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>He is going to show Gideon in advance just\nwhat kind of empowerment he will have to defeat the Midianites and deliver\nIsrael out of their hands.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>So\nthe angel of the Lord takes the Staff and touches the soaked me and bread cakes\non the rock.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Instantly, fire comes out\nof the rock, consuming the meat and bread cakes.<span\nstyle='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>One can only imagine the look on Gideon\u2019s\nface.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>His instant reaction is, \u201cOh my\nGod!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve just seen an angel of the\nLord, face to face!\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>And\nthe Lord speaks to Gideon the same words many of us have heard at times in our\nlives, \u201cPeace be unto you!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Fear\nnot!<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re not going to die.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'>Are\nyou seeing, now, how the Staff was used as a prophetic symbol of that which was\nto come?<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Think back to David\u2019s\nexperience as he has had the Rod and the Staff with him in the Valley of the\nShadow of Death.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>\u00a0 <\/span>Where did David\u2019s\nexperience with the Lord begin?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Book Antiqua\",\"serif\"'><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:\nnormal;mso-pagination:none'><span style='font-size:13.0pt;font-family:\"Bernard MT
