ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 39<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Over the past few months, we\u2019ve\nspent a great deal of time in talking about the Paths of Righteousness, and\nmore specifically, those things that occur as a part of our walking through the\nValley of the Shadow of Death.\u00a0\n<\/span>Throughout the past 30 years or so, I can\u2019t tell you how many people\nI\u2019ve run across who genuinely believe that God is some mysterious being in high\nplaces just waiting for folks to screw up so He can come down on them like ugly\non an ape.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Sadly, there are many would-be\nChristians who are stuck with that mentality as well.\u00a0 <\/span>They genuinely believe that they\u2019ve missed\nthe boat so badly that God is trying to do them in.\u00a0 <\/span>NO, HE\u2019S NOT !!!\u00a0 <\/span>At no time does God ever take us through a\nseries of events and circumstances with the purpose of doing us in.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s out to do us good!<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

The Valley of the Shadow of Death is\nnot there to kill us off.\u00a0 <\/span>We are taken\ninto it \u2013 and here\u2019s the best part \u2013 and through it to the other side<\/u>,\nso He can demonstrate in our lives what He has accomplished.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s not forget that there was a whole lot\nof adventure that preceded this time in our lives \u2013 adventures and experiences\nthat well prepared us for this time in our life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

If we paid attention to the\ndiscipline that was required when we were made to lie down in the green\npastures and eat and digest the Word, we were given that initial period of time\nin which critically important foundations needed to be laid in our lives.\u00a0 <\/span>Without those foundations, we would be like a\nreed blowing in the wind, unstable in our walk, and unstable in our trust in\nthe Lord Jesus Christ.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Without having been filled with the\nHoly Spirit and having access to the languages of Heaven, we would not have the\ninstant ability to pray in such a way that Satan cannot understand or interfere\nwith our prayers and our intercession.\u00a0\n<\/span>Those prayers are really important to us when we are in the Valley of\nthe Shadow of Death.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We were set free from the Fear of\nEvil, the Fear of Man and the Fear of Death during the period of restoration,\nand that deliverance prepared us for the walk in the Paths of\nRighteousness.\u00a0 <\/span>Without that deliverance\ntaking place first, our walk with the Lord would be compromised, and we would\ncompromise our obedience to Jesus\u2019 instructions and commands.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

Now we\u2019ve seen and experienced\nfirst-hand the presence of the Lord with us as we\u2019ve traversed these\npaths.\u00a0 <\/span>When Jesus said, \u201cI will never\nleave you, nor forsake you,\u201d He wasn\u2019t kidding!\u00a0\n<\/span>Whether we\u2019ve felt His presence or not during our walk, there has been\nthat confident, rock-solid knowing in our beings that no matter what the\ncircumstance, Jesus was with us, in us and manifesting through us.\u00a0 <\/span>More than that, we have the confidence that\nwe are in Him \u2013 and that makes all the difference in the world.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve talked in the last few weeks\nabout the Rod of Correction and the Rod of authority, and the ease it brings to\nus as we walk with the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>Last week\nwe began our discussion on the Staff, its guidance and support.\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s see if we can wrap up our discussion on\nthe Staff today before we move on to the Table that the Lord has set before us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s\nwhere we left off last week.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Think\nback to David\u2019s experience as he has had the Rod and the Staff with him in the\nValley of the Shadow of Death.\u00a0 <\/span>Where did\nDavid\u2019s experience with the Lord begin?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe Lord is MY Shepherd.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>And\nwhere is this path of the Lord leading David?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAnd I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nStaff was more than David\u2019s support.\u00a0 <\/span>It\nwas more than his encouragement and comfort in places and experiences that\nappeared threatening.\u00a0 <\/span>It was more than\nhis guidance.\u00a0 <\/span>It pointed the way for\nDavid to where he was being led.\u00a0 <\/span>The\nguidance was prophetic guidance.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthe 17th chapter of I Samuel, we have the story of David and Goliath.\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone knows about David\u2019s sling and the\nfive stones that he took as he went out to meet Goliath.\u00a0 <\/span>What always gets left out of the picture is\nthe fact that David not only had his sling and the stones, he also had his\nStaff with him.\u00a0 <\/span>It was as important to\nDavid as the sling.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nII Samuel 23, we have an account of the mighty men that went everywhere with\nDavid.\u00a0 <\/span>One of them was Benaiah, the son\nof Jehoiada.\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s what we read in\nverses 20-21.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Samuel 23:20-21<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And Benaiah the son\nof Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he\nslew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst\nof a pit in time of snow: And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the\nEgyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and\nplucked the spear out of the Egyptian\u2019s hand, and slew him with his own spear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nwe see the Staff as a weapon.\u00a0 <\/span>Benaiah\nuses his staff to disarm the Egyptian, take the Egyptian\u2019s spear from him and\nkill him with that spear.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then\nwe have another example of the Staff as a prophetic symbol for healing with\nElisha and his servant, Gehazi.\u00a0 <\/span>This is\nan instance in which a Shunammite woman has had a son in response to a prophecy\nfrom Elisha.\u00a0 <\/span>The son has yet to reach\nthe age of 12 but goes out to the fields to help his father.\u00a0 <\/span>While there, he begins to complain of severe\npains in his head.\u00a0 <\/span>His father carries\nhim back to the house, lays him on his bed and the boy subsequently dies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nShunammite woman will not rest or eat or sleep until she can get to\nElisha.\u00a0 <\/span>She pleads her case with Elisha.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Kings 4:29<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Then he\n[Elisha] said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand,\nand go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee,\nanswer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/span>From Elisha\u2019s standpoint, that Staff would\nbecome what Oral Roberts liked to describe as \u201ca point of contact.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>It was intended to be the prophetic point of\ncontact in which the power of God, resident in Elisha, would be transferred\ninto the child.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nend of that story, of course, is that Gehazi was not a man of faith, and there\nwas no faith in him when he laid the Staff on the face of the child.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, Elisha had to be there in person to\nraise the child back to life.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntake a different look at the Staff.\u00a0\n<\/span>We\u2019re still dealing with the prophetic symbolism of the Staff, but this\ntime we are considering it within the framework of the execution of God\u2019s\njudgment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Consider\nIsaiah\u2019s prophecy against the \u201cking of Babylon\u201d in Isaiah 14.\u00a0 <\/span>We know, of course, that Isaiah\u2019s prophecy\nwas specifically meant for Lucifer as we see him identified in verse 12.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 14:4-6<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>That thou\nshalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the\noppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>The LORD hath broken\nthe staff of the wicked, and<\/i> the sceptre of the rulers.\u00a0 <\/span>He who smote the people in wrath with a\ncontinual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and<\/i>\nnone hindereth.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthis instance, the Staff is a staff of the wicked and a symbol of their\nrulership and authority.\u00a0 <\/span>Isaiah\nidentifies the wicked use of the staff as a means to exercise anger by beating\npeople into submission.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah\nis identifying it as Satan\u2019s staff and his misuse of it by taking what was\nmeant for support, guidance, and the authority of the Lord and twisting its use\nfor wickedness.\u00a0 <\/span>Incidentally, we have\nhere a clear picture of the definition of the word, \u201ciniquity.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Both\nHebrew and Greek words which are translated \u201ciniquity,\u201d literally mean: <\/span>to twist<\/span>, as in, <\/span>to twist the\nmeaning<\/span>, <\/span>or,\n<\/span>to\ntwist the use of<\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Satan,\nas the father of iniquity, twists the use of God\u2019s Word so as to use it as a\nweapon against us.\u00a0 <\/span>He twists the staff\nof guidance so as to lead us down the primrose path to destruction.\u00a0 <\/span>He twists prophecy for the same reason.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Let\u2019s\nwrap up our various examples of the use and picture of the staff with a command\nthat Jesus gave to His disciples as He sent them forth for ministry.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Mark 6:7-13<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And he called unto\nhim<\/i> the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them\npower over unclean spirits;\u00a0 <\/span>And\ncommanded them that they should take nothing for their<\/i> journey, save\na staff only<\/u>; no scrip, no bread, no money in their<\/i> purse:\u00a0 <\/span>But be<\/i> shod with sandals; and not put\non two coats. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he said unto them, In what place soever<\/span>\nye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.\u00a0 <\/span>And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear\nyou, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony\nagainst them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha<\/span> in the day of judgment, than for that city.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And they went out, and preached that men should repent.\u00a0 <\/span>And they cast out many devils, and anointed\nwith oil many that were sick, and healed them<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pretty\nfascinating, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t take a\npurse or pouch or wallet with you.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t\ntake any bread or food with you.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t\ntake any money or coins hidden in your pouch for emergency\u2019s sake.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t take any extra clothing.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t take a second coat (to use in the event\nof rainy weather).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\ncan wear what you have on.\u00a0 <\/span>You can wear\nyour sandals.\u00a0 <\/span>The only thing you\u2019re\npermitted to take with you is your Staff!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nessence of what Jesus was saying to them is, \u201cYou\u2019re going in my authority and\npower!\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m sending you out to call men\nand women to repentance and to heal the sick.\u00a0\n<\/span>I\u2019ve given you power and authority over all unclean and wicked\nspirits.\u00a0 <\/span>Take the staff.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019ll not need anything else.\u00a0 <\/span>[That staff will be the visible evidence to\nall who see you come into their villages and towns that you are coming with my\nguidance and authority. Everyone understands the significance of the staff and\nits associations.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>RAC added<\/span><\/i>]<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nauthority and power that went with the disciples as they moved from town to\ntown and from village to village was demonstrated daily as they preached\nrepentance, anointed the sick and healed them, AND they demonstrated the proof\nof the prophecy Isaiah had given some 700 years earlier concerning the Lord\nbreaking Lucifer\u2019s staff as they cast out demons.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019ve\nreally taken a circuitous path today in talking about all the pictures\nassociated with the Staff, and hopefully, you have a much better understanding\nof why David wrote, <\/span>\u201cThy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Does it make sense to you?\u00a0 <\/span>It should be readily apparent that it is the\nStaff of the Lord in our hands that provides the comfort.\u00a0 <\/span>It is His authority.\u00a0 <\/span>It is His power.\u00a0 <\/span>It is His presence dwelling in us and with\nus.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Next\nweek, we will pick up with the Table of the Lord, and the importance of David\u2019s\nstatement, <\/span>\u201cHe prepareth a Table before me in the presence of mine\nenemies.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There are some\nrather unusual demonstrations of this throughout the Word, and the significance\nof this statement goes way beyond any casual consideration<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
