ANOTHER COFFEE BREAK: THE PSALM 23 ADVENTURE, Part 40<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

This is probably going to be as\ndifferent an approach as any I\u2019ve ever taken, but the picture of the Table of\nthe Lord that He sets for us in the midst of our enemies is perhaps one of the\nleast understood and the most rewarding.\u00a0\n<\/span>This is a revelation which, if you can get a hold of, will literally\nbless your socks off!<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nwhere we\u2019ve just come from?\u00a0 <\/span>The Valley\nof the Shadow of Death.\u00a0 <\/span>The presence of\nenemies on every side.\u00a0 <\/span>Opposition that\nhas required our steadfast trust in the Lord and the comfort that comes with\nknowing that He is the One Who has led us, He is the One whose rod of\ncorrection AND rod of authority have been the ever-present source of comfort\nand satisfaction in all that He has wrought in our lives from the moment we\nmade Him our Lord and Shepherd.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

David\nrightly put it when he wrote:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Psalm 23:5:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>Thou preparest a\ntable before me in the presence of mine enemies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nlast part of that statement is critical to understanding what the Lord is doing\nwith us right now!\u00a0 <\/span>Remember: our enemies\nhave not departed.\u00a0 <\/span>They haven\u2019t left us\nalone.\u00a0 <\/span>They haven\u2019t stopped in their\nefforts to defeat us.\u00a0 <\/span>They haven\u2019t\nceased to throw darts of doubt, fear and unbelief our way in order to get us to\ngive up.\u00a0 <\/span>They haven\u2019t given up on the\nidea that they<\/i><\/b> are the ones in authority, that we are really\nlosers who have followed false claims and illogical beliefs that make no\nreasoning sense at all.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Remember\nwhat Isaiah prophesied (and this is exactly what David is referring to in his\nstatement)?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 54:17<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>No weapon that is\nformed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that<\/i> shall rise\nagainst thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is<\/i> the heritage of the\nservants of the LORD, and their righteousness is<\/i> of me, saith the LORD.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Weapons\nhave been formed against us!\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s be\nclear.\u00a0 <\/span>The Valley of the Shadow of Death\nis no picnic.\u00a0 <\/span>It isn\u2019t an easy time.\u00a0 <\/span>The Enemy absolutely does not want us to make\nit through this place.\u00a0 <\/span>He surrounds us\nwith accusers, with doubters, with folks who tell us that we\u2019ve just\nmisunderstood the Word and that what we\u2019ve hoped for and expected just isn\u2019t\ngoing to happen.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But\nthe Lord IS with us, and even though we will be attacked in the Valley\nexperience (and that\u2019s a guarantee!) we\u2019ve not been forgotten by the Lord.\u00a0 <\/span>He takes a dim view of His people being taken\nadvantage of, falsely accused, physically assaulted or shamed in some way.\u00a0 <\/span>That said, consider these promises:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 49:18-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>Lift up thine\neyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and<\/i>\ncome to thee. As<\/i> I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee\nwith them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee<\/i>, as a bride doeth<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>For thy waste and thy desolate places, and\nthe land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the\ninhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Notice\nthat the Lord is promising to bring your accusers and your attackers and\n\u201cclothe you with them\u201d in such a way that they become \u201can ornament\u201d \u2014 a sign\nand symbol to all who see you that His approval is on you \u2014 not<\/i><\/b>\non those who\u2019ve falsely attacked and accused you!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

That\u2019s\na strange way to put it \u2013 and this is a Hebrew metaphor \u2013 but what God is\nsaying is that those who\u2019ve been your greatest detractors will see the\nvindication of the Lord upon you, in you and with you, and they will yield.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, in many cases, your erstwhile\ngreatest enemies may well become your greatest friends and supporters.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now\nthat\u2019s being clothed with them \u201cas an ornament!\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 59:16-19<\/span><\/u><\/b>: <\/span>And he saw\nthat there was<\/i> no man, and wondered that there was<\/i> no\nintercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his\nrighteousness, it sustained him.\u00a0 <\/span>For he\nput on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his\nhead; and he put on the garments of vengeance for<\/i> clothing, and was clad\nwith zeal as a cloak.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

According to their<\/i> deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury\nto his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay\nrecompense.\u00a0 <\/span>So shall they fear the name\nof the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the\nenemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a\nstandard against him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Do\nyou see it?\u00a0 <\/span>Do you see how the Lord\navenges you?\u00a0 <\/span>In Isaiah 59:19, the Hebrew\nis even stronger.\u00a0 <\/span>The phraseology goes\nlike this:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhen, like a flood, the enemy shall come, the Spirit\nof the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n

The\nHebrew word, <\/span>nus<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\nis the word translated in this instance as \u201cstandard.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cStandard\u201d really doesn\u2019t properly translate\nthe word, <\/span>nus<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>It means: <\/span>to flick away, as with\none\u2019s finger, to cause to disappear, to drive away hastily.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nhas a double meaning.\u00a0 <\/span>The first and most\nobvious meaning is that the enemy is caused to be driven away hastily, or to be\nmade to disappear.\u00a0 <\/span>(I\u2019ll come back to\nthis one momentarily.)\u00a0 <\/span>The second\nmeaning is that the problems caused by the Enemy are made to disappear, or to\nbe \u201cflicked away.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

This\nsecond meaning is the one we would more likely associate with, <\/span>\u201cThou\npreparest a Table before me in the presence of mine enemies.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The problems caused by our enemies are\nbrought to naught (zip, nada, nothing!) while they are still around and\nwatching what is taking place as the Lord vindicates and prospers His people in\nthe face of attack and opposition.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Now,\ntake a deeper look at the first meaning.\u00a0\n<\/span>Consider the event that unfolded when the Moabites and the Ammonites\ncame up against Judah and Jerusalem when Jehoshaphat was King.\u00a0 <\/span>A virtually innumerable army was assembled against\nJudah.\u00a0 <\/span>Jehoshaphat had absolutely no\nchance of defeating an army of such size with the relatively small contingent\nof fighting men in his army.\u00a0 <\/span>So\nJehoshaphat calls for a day of fasting (Hmmm \u2026 that\u2019s the opposite of\n\u201cfeasting,\u201d isn\u2019t it?).\u00a0 <\/span>At the end of the\nfast, a descendant of the singer\/prophet, Asaph, who was a key part of David\u2019s\ntabernacle, stood and prophesied the following:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Chronicles\n20:15-17<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\n<\/span>And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of\nJerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not\nafraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is<\/i>\nnot yours, but God\u2019s.\u00a0 <\/span>Tomorrow go ye\ndown against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz<\/span>;\nand ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Ye shall not\nneed<\/i> to fight in this battle<\/i>: set yourselves, stand ye still<\/i>,\nand see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not,\nnor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the LORD will be<\/i> with\nyou.<\/span> <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

So\nJehoshaphat instructed the priests \u2013 in fact, that same assemblage of singers\nand musicians who were descendants of the original three families in David\u2019s\ntabernacle \u2013 to go out before their very modest military with singing and\npraising God.\u00a0 <\/span>Here\u2019s how the next part\nof this event unfolds \u2013 and watch how the Lord \u201cflicks the enemy\u201d with His\nfinger.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Chronicles\n20:20-24<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And they rose early\nin the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa<\/span>:\nand as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye\ninhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be\nestablished; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.\u00a0 <\/span>And when he had consulted with the people, he\nappointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness,\nas they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy end<\/a>ureth<\/span><\/span>\nforever.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments<\/span> against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir<\/span>, which were come against Judah; and they were\nsmitten.\u00a0 <\/span>For the children of Ammon and\nMoab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir<\/span>,\nutterly to slay and destroy them<\/i>: and when they had made an end of the\ninhabitants of Seir<\/span>, every one helped to destroy\nanother.\u00a0 <\/span>And when Judah came toward the\nwatch tower in the wilderness, they\nlooked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were<\/span> dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped<\/u><\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You\nsee it now, don\u2019t you?\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, but wait!\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s more!\u00a0\n<\/span>Remember, we are talking about the Table of the Lord and the provision\nHe makes for you in the presence of your enemies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Chronicles\n20:25-30<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And when Jehoshaphat\nand his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in\nabundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they\nstripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were\nthree days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much<\/u>.\u00a0 <\/span>And on the fourth day they assembled themselves\nin the valley of Berachah<\/span>; for there they blessed the\nLORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah<\/span>, unto this day.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and\nJehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for\nthe LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.\u00a0 <\/span>And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries\nand harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD.\u00a0 <\/span>And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms\nof those<\/i> countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the\nenemies of Israel.\u00a0 <\/span>So the realm of\nJehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Talk\nabout a demonstration!\u00a0 <\/span>The enemy\nslaughtered each other.\u00a0 <\/span>It all happened\nin the midst of praise and worship.\u00a0 <\/span>When\nIsrael came upon the site of the expected battle, their enemies were dead to\nthe last man!\u00a0 <\/span>The Table that the Lord\nset for Israel in the face of their erstwhile enemy included provisions and\nsuch wealth that it took them three days to gather it all and carry it away.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The\nend of that story is that because of the great victory that the Lord gave\nJehoshaphat and Judah over the Moabites and Ammonites, the whole of the\nsurrounding countryside \u2013 the neighboring nations \u2013 heard about it and it frightened\nthe living daylights out of them.\u00a0 <\/span>It was\na supernatural victory,\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord set the\nstage for His people against all natural \u2013 let\u2019s call it \u201chuman reasoning\u201d \u2013\nodds.\u00a0 <\/span>From that day forth, so long as\nJehoshaphat sat on the throne in Jerusalem, they had peace, and their enemies\nstayed away from them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Thus,\nwhen the Enemy attempts to overwhelm you or inundate you with negative\ncircumstances or apparent \u201cdoom and gloom\u201d events, to use an old clich\u00e9, the\nLord comes down on your enemies \u201clike ugly on an ape.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Isaiah 61:7<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>For\nyour shame ye shall have<\/i> double; and for<\/i> confusion they shall\nrejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the\ndouble: everlasting joy shall be unto them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Get\nit?\u00a0 <\/span>This is that table that has been set\nbefore you in the midst of your enemies.\u00a0\n<\/span>And that\u2019s only a fraction of what God has for us.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Take\na look at one of the most unusual tables of the Lord, set in the midst of\nIsrael\u2019s enemies.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m quoting the entire\nstory from II Kings so that you can get the context of God\u2019s intervention for\nIsrael, and the \u201cstandard\u201d He set up against them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

II Kings 6:8-23<\/span><\/u><\/b>:\u00a0\n<\/span><\/span>Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel\nwith his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be<\/i> my\ncamp.\u00a0 <\/span>And the man of God sent unto the\nking of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the\nSyrians are come down.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king of\nIsrael sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and\nsaved himself there, not once nor twice.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for\nthis thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not show me\nwhich of us is<\/i> for the king of Israel?\u00a0\n<\/span>And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the\nprophet that is<\/i> in Israel, telleth<\/span> the king of\nIsrael the words that thou speakest<\/span> in thy\nbedchamber.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he said, Go and spy where he is<\/i>, that I may send and\nfetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is<\/i> in Dothan. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/sup>Therefore sent he\nthither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and\ncompassed the city about.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone\nforth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And\nhis servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?\u00a0 <\/span>And he answered, Fear not: for they that be<\/i>\nwith us are<\/i> more than they that be<\/i> with them.\u00a0 <\/span>And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray\nthee, open his eyes, that he may see.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and,\nbehold, the mountain was<\/i> full of horses and chariots of fire round about\nElisha.\u00a0 <\/span>And when they came down to him,\nElisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with\nblindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.\u00a0 <\/span>And Elisha said unto them, This is<\/i> not\nthe way, neither is<\/i> this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to\nthe man whom ye seek.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

But he led them to Samaria.\u00a0\n<\/span>And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said,\nLORD, open the eyes of these men<\/i>, that they may see.\u00a0 <\/span>And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw;\nand, behold, they were<\/i> in the midst of Samaria.\u00a0 <\/span>And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when\nhe saw them, My father, shall I smite them<\/i>? shall I smite them<\/i>?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them<\/i>: wouldest<\/span> thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with\nthy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat\nand drink, and go to their master.\u00a0 <\/span>And\nhe prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he\nsent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no\nmore into the land of Israel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In\nthis instance, Elisha did to the King of Syria exactly what Jesus instructed in\nHis \u201cSermon on the Mount.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n
